@@unsenorllamadoukko5795 I believe, he even did that when the band already existed and he's even asked from time to time to compose classical stuff for events or whatever...
At 08:30 you paused during the most surprising part of the song:D So just in case you missed it. That rhythm-change gets me every time:D And if you liked his style of playing you definitely have to check out Kenny Grohowski of Imperial Triumphant, never saw something like his style of playing:D
My old band used to open for his old band Martyr. Pat is honest to goodness a super amazing guy. Very chill and always wanting to talk drums. Still one of my favorite drummers of all time. Check out his old band Martyr if you get a chance. Still very heavy but a little more tech death metal progressive kinda thing.
Would highly reccommend you check out Mike Heller with his group Malignancy. Its a huge psa for any metal drummers wondering why rudiments are important. Watching him is a lot like watching a jazz drummer. Just relaxed precision with lots of dynamic headroom.
Truly an amazing choice. The amount of incredible bands this guy has been in is astonishing. Obviously Gorguts but also Martyr and Cephalic Carnage. Technical marvels all. That being said you need to listen to Gorguts beyond the drumming. Pat deserves all the credit he gets for this video but a lot of people call Luc Lemay a musical genius and I wouldn't fight them. Miles beyond most metal
I love this album. I was only just starting to get into progressive extreme metal from ProgArchives highly rated albums and found Obscura by them, which was so meticulously dissonant throughout that I had to look up the band to see what they were up to. Turns out they hadn't released an album in 12 years. So I looked up Luc Lemay and... he was working on an album with a few other musicians that I'd come to enjoy. Colored Sands was definitely worth it.
he was the Drummer for a Tech Death band called MARTYR in Quebec ! he was the go to drummer to replace all the irreplaceable drummers. I Replaced the drummer from Despised Icon, Cephalic Carnage, Quo vadis Blood runs black Etc ..... he's a true BEAST !!!
to answer your question, yes, a huge part of Canada is in the arctic, and there’s a little bit of the arctic for the Americans (Alaska), and yes, Canada does have territories, and provinces
Ouch! I'm going to put Dark side of the moon on to give my speakers a rest! I'm so old, but again I have nothing but respect for these drummers who are totally out of my comprehension. ✌️❤️🤗
Gorguts basically invented* technical death metal and Pat is one of the most technical and accomplished drummers I've ever seen. The Obscura live video in Germany I think, legendary.
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Actually a lot of extreme metal drummers have done those drumtalk interviews. You can totally make a new series where you watch some of those interviews so you can get into the minds of these guys 🤔.
I'm not a fan of metal but I can certainly appreciate Pat's drumming. I noticed your Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters and the That's What She Said sign. Nice touch. Thanks Andrew.
There’s a song called “jack hammer” by an 80’s band called “anvil” that’s awesome and the drums go absolutely insane also, as you would hope by the name
Fantastic....you checked out patrice hes awesome and a great human being ive been fortunate to see him every night for 2 weeks while we opened for them canada has alot of great drummers... flo mounier???????next???hmmmm thanks andrew
ok, Pat actually not only switches to traditional grip, I think for some performances he even had two different bass drums, maybe even pedals, to get different tones and feels for the metal versus the more laid back styles in the songs... that is somewhat very over the top and unnecessary but shows the dedication to the music. probably same reason here: to have different dynamics and feel. Really necessary? No, but if that helps him somewhat in acheving what he wants to achieve musically, all the more power to him.
For something else extreme (but very different), here is Dennis Ritchie of the band Macabre. He is about as old school as it gets, but his chops and stamina are quite impressive. This particular song, “Hitchhiker,” features some intense transitions. ua-cam.com/video/jXUW2AFZvzY/v-deo.html
It’s easier to play. If in the process of learning we get to use “traditional”styles we would naturally apply it in the process of writing. Feels convenient and makes it more fun to play on any style. Gorguts are Epic.
Regarding triggers. A lot of the bands do use triggers mainly on their bass drum. You could do a deep dive at some point with them. Triggers are to me like guitar pedals....just a way of changing the sound. They won't change when the beat happens. Quantizing, during editing is what would fix the off time hits that people get angry about.
This is all very true EXCEPT that while the faster you get the softer you'll hit. There are drummers who do use triggers as a shortcut to getting louder sounding hits live when they actually haven't trained their legs to do most of the work in producing hard velocities. Not all of course but some do take the path of least resistance. On the other hand there are drummers who have worked hard but need the longevity when touring for long runs and to preserve their ability.
Shout out to John Longstreth for originally composing and recording this for the album. I do much prefer Pat's feel when playing ESPECIALLY the way he mixes his drums.

"Pat Hamelin" sounds like an actor to me. Of course, anything French tends to be pretentious beyond belief. I love his strokes (THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID) My drum teacher taught me that left hand traditional grip some 50 plus years ago. Anymore I can do either grip, but I like you don't generally see the need for it. But some great ones use it such as Neil Peart. Good drummer but the music is god-awful. IMO. Funny you have a karate kid shirt on, just a minute ago, I watched a Japanese Karate sensei reviewing the first Karate Kid.
Gorguts are awesome! Their main songwriter Luc Lemay is classically trained, btw. He studied classical composition, if I'm not mistaken...
