For anyone in the US, the 4070 Zephyrus M16 does not have the mini led display, apparently only the international variants with a 4070 have it. In the US, 4080 and up have it, but not the 4070
It was a tough choice between the 4080 models of this and legion pro 7i, with deals they cost about the same, so I went with the LP7i because I could use that CPU performance and there's always external displays to get that extra eye candy. It arrives in about 2 weeks, pretty hyped! Your reviews helped a lot, thanks man!
I just got my 4080 Lp7i two days ago and I'm really enjoying it. Previously, I've had bad experiences with cpu thermals on my last laptop (predator helios 300 with 8th gen intel and 1060) and the Lp7i has the best cooling and temps of all 40 series laptops. The throttling he describes makes me positive the Lp7i was the right choice. Plus the Vantage software is so feature rich. Everything about the laptop just feels so complete, thought out, and easy to use compared to anything I've had. And Lenovos extended warrantys are so cheap and cover everything. Only two downsides is the screen, which is by no means bad just not flagship level, and the keyboard could really benefit from a metal/firmer deck. My previous laptops had S and A tier Keyboards and this is a B, maybe B+. It has great travel and keystroke feel, but just needs something solid behind it for my heavy fingers. Though I tried all the laptops at microcenter (scar, strix, zephyrus, legion, and raider) and really wasn't impressed with any of the keyboards. All about the same.

@@RHYNOTACTICS I also have the same helios (but with 1050ti) and I'll be looking to upgrade later this year. My primary concerns are battery life and performance. Are you satisfied with the 7i's battery life?
I've been using M16 (2023) for last 3 weeks nearly, for productivity and gaming its overkill for current hardware needs. Hope that It will last 5+ years.
Last year I wasn't so interested in 3080ti reviews because the price to performance difference with the 3070ti was quite high (3080ti was not worth it for just gaming). This year the 4080 and 4090 are a lot more interesting to me so seeing so many 4070 reviews is a bit of a bummer 😢
That Legion 7 w/RX6850M XT laptop is still a beast! Sadly it doesn't get added to many reviews, still one of the best laptops that'll still last you another year or two
just wanted to state that the bestbuy link you have supplied is not the mini led version but a 500 nits IPS one, and plus the ram on it is single channel 16gb
The screws are covered with rubber stoppers because asus laptops frequently lose their screws during regular use. I don't know why but it also happened with my laptop. Thankfully the screw which fell, was found in my house. 😌
True, the 4-5 reviews I found so far are all for the 4090, and this one here for the 4070. Former is too expensive and a bit over kill, the latter is a bit too weak. 4080 is the sweat spot this year!
in turbo/manual mode it'll hover fairly close to the max advertised tgp of 145/150W, but will be atrociously loud. Performance mode reduces fan noise to normal levels and dial back the gpu to around 120W.
FYI for those in the US. The m16 that goes for $1949 is 16gb ram and ips display only, no mini led. No idea how he got this laptop, but Asus isn't selling it with those exact specs at all in the us
Thank you for mentioning the patchy lighting. Would be nice to show it up close. I have the MSI GE66 and the patchy keyboard is something that would have swayed me to another laptop if I'd known in advance how bad it is.
I'm very interested to see the performance difference between this particular model and its respective variant with a 4080/90. Could you tell me if you are planning a dedicated video about it? Thank you
Just got my hands on a Zephyrus G16(i9-13900 4060) a few days ago and with it using last year's M16 chasis(and this year's minor changes) i think its a better value for money considering I just lose out mainly on the 4070 and also mini led screen. I don't plan to have more than 32gb of RAM so with it soldered or not doesn't really bother me for me and although I haven't personally experienced the mini led screen yet but the G16's QHD 240hz screen is already pretty impressive to me. Pretty happy with my purchase so far.
@@aybaws Just finished an hour's session of Honkai Star Rail - HSR (pretty graphic intensive) at highest settings (i think?) so I can answer you on this, though its all very subjective hahahaha Didn't check the actual numbers, but its quite hot to the touch at the top part of the body (basically above the F1-F12 part), but its fine because most of the time the fingers are going to be rested on the keys itself or in between the keys, it doesn't feel hot, at most warm on the keys. For the fan noise its pretty much as loud as how Jarrod tested the M16 in this review, its a bit of a sharp kind of noise, something similar to 12.35-12.37 (47-48db) portion of the video, same kind of noise at all levels just at different loudness. It can get pretty darn loud at max fan speed (tried by maxing out in manual mode) but while i'm playing HSR under optimized mode performance mode it sounds like around 47db-48db (judging based on this review), pretty standard and acceptable kind of noise I think. For comparison, gaming on Monster Hunter Rise (the first game I tried) on Max Settings 1440p 120fps capped was nowhere as warm and loud compared to HSR, probably around 60-70% max as warm. I thought it would be quite heavy on the laptop (coming from 2060) but it just felt like no sweat at all. As for normal use out of gaming, (browsing, movie, spreadsheet etc) couldn't hear any fan noise 90% of the time, minimal at most if any, and also just slightly warm to touch at most if you touch the areas out of the keyboard. This is the part where i'm the most satisfied with the G16 because my old laptop has fan noise all the time , even just by turning it on. Just to mention, one thing that happened to me was the bottom right corner of the body (where we rest our palm to the right of the touchpad) felt very warm even on idle because I installed an old, probably low quality SSD on the second SSD slot, according to crystal disk info the temperature of the SSD went up to 70'C while the stock SSD was only around 50'C. This should be the problem of the particular SSD stick because i replaced with it with another spare one i had around and didn't have that issue anymore.

@@aybaws Glad I could help, I was in a dilemma too because there isn't many reviews yet for the 2023 Zephyrus lineups, especially for the 16 inch ones. My concern was more on battery life, for the first 2023 releases it doesn't seem like there is any AMD for the Zephyrus, and I was quite skeptical for intel's battery life, as Jarrod always reminds us of it in his battery tests. But I ended up deciding to take the leap of faith for the 4000 series' frame gen and DLSS 3. Still waiting to see Jarrod's review on the Zephyrus G16 though, to see if its any different from my experience 😛
@@adriatics.3357 It gets loud due to being so compact. I would recommend the Strix with a 4080 if you mainly want it for gaming. It is usually heavily GPU bound but I also use it for work so it's nice to be so thin. However the Zephyrus is higher material quality than the Strix
Pretty amazing machine! I only went razer blade as I wanted the extra cores to play around with VMs, but otherwise, this would have been top of my list, especially with that screen and the power to weight ratio being so favorable. Any chance you can do a review for the MSI Stealth A13V? The laptop seems to meet all of my needed specs on paper but I can find no reviews at all of the RTX 4060 model, and only one short review of the 4050 version. Alternatively, do you have a recommendation for a different lightweight gaming laptop with a minimum of 8gb vram?
Will you review the newest Lenovo Slim 9i pro? Not primarily a gaming laptop but now has some serious gaming capable specs. I trust your review above all others.
Thanks for the review Jarrod. This laptop generally looks awesome, however it's quite disappointing to learn that even with 3 fans, the temps don't appear to be as good as I expected. In terms of the thermal throttling, I suppose the best way to get around that is to undervolt the cpu and/or gpu... is that the best thing to do or is there a better way forward (I don't want my gameplay to be affected by this)?
I like this one but a 4080 is minimum I am willing to go to upgrade from my 3070 2021 Legion 7i. That said, I love how Asus are letting it run proper to throttle (and 95 is under the 100 tj max anyway and is perfectly safe) - The clock speeds are higher than bigger laptops in many cases! Very good.
@@Cenot4ph Not really, but 4090 is what I am aiming for I've decided. 4080 still has DLSS3 and FG and I can't find a game benchmark where 4080 isn't significantly better. Timespy is 17K vs 10. That's huge.
Hi there, I am considering buying this model. According to the Asus website, the model with 4070, which is shared in the Best-Buy link, doesn't have a mini-LED. I have used the Asus G14-M16 line for the past 3 years, and the quality control issues makes it really hard for me to recommend them and it does feel like they are getting worse year on year in the quality department.
@@randy89555 no, screens have been pretty solid but they have quality control issues like keyboard not working, damaged body, cooling fans clicking out of the box under load(failing ball bearings). like that. these can be avoided by checking the laptop thoroughly after buying them.
Soldering was so bad on my G14 2021 model that it shorted its own MB and the local distributor claimed that it was Liquid Metal repasting done by the user, when the 21 model didn’t even use Liquid Metal. It took 3 months of emailing between the distributor and ASUS to get have it returned under warranty. 2022 model had a really bad wifi chip and what was more insulting that an external wifi adapter would cause every other plugged device to USB ports to disconnect.
@@Ronaldo-se3ff you can easily brick your MB because ASUS still likes to use the metal battery release instead of a plastic one. I’ve already had a bad experience with disconnecting the battery off my 2021 G14 that ended up completely killing the board because of a notorious short at the battery connector. This is the sort of thing reviewers will never tell you.
I was really looking forward to this laptop and immediately ordered the 4090 model. However i ended up very disappointed. The 4090 provided equal - sometimes inferior - performance compared to my friends strix 4080 in terms of average FPS. The fans are very loud and don't expect to game on your lap as it gets very hot. I'm not sure if my product was defect, but it showed alot of issues such as excessive blooming on dark backgrounds (windows dark mode) and problems with starting the laptop while charging, more often then not requiring forced shutdowns. I read simular posts on reddit regarding poor quality control. I ultimately ended up returning the product.
Will you be reviewing the Duo 16 this year? I need a new laptop this year and I remember last years model had some setbacks in performance. Would be interesting to see if they addressed it in the new model.
I was waiting for this review! Thx:) M16 with rtx 4080 should be a good option for working with the external monitor and be usable as a powerful laptop on the road. I was thinking that batter life would be much, much worse ! Nice!:)
Might pull the trigger on this laptop. it's 1500 new on Best buy, been wanting an upgrade for my 2021 G14 Zephyrus, especially since i could use a bigger screen.
I was looking at 4080 g14, but it's a whole $1k more now the best buy is on sale. I want smaller and more power but that cost is crazy. Did you buy yet ?
Hi Jarrod! If you could get the 4070 m16 for $1500, would you get that over the 4080 g14? I would prefer the smaller g14 size and better performance but finding it hard to know if that's worth the $1000 difference.
I picked up one of the mobile RTX 4090 versions of this laptop and I'm really enjoying it. Regular power is more than enough to max out all of my games at over 90 FPS with low fan noise and heat (except PT Cyberpunk) and putting the full Turbo mode power on easily makes Cyberpunk PT smooth. The display is awesome (I wish it were glass covered and glossy though) and the brightness is fantastic. The HDR feature is a game changer for me, especially in Cyberpunk with Path Tracing since the differences between high and low brightness elements in the game is dramatically enhanced. Many neon elements in the game are so bright they actually hurt my eyes, which is amazing. The sound is very good too, especially coming from a Blade. The size is not too bad, but it's borderline too large for me. It is *just* portable enough, but my previous Blade was perfect. Battery life is not great, but I expected that with this generation's most powerful laptops, so meh.
@@uzoochogu copying from some of my other posts: I think build quality wise it's decent, it feels very solid, no loose pieces or gaps or anything, but the Blade is definitely still better. The Blade, like the MacBooks or Dell XPS just feels like a single, dense, solid unit. It's very reassuring. But going from the 14" Blade (which IMHO is the perfect form factor) to the new M16, the M16 is just on the edge of good portability to me because I can just use it on the plane and it's only about half a pound heavier than the 14" Blade. The new Blades are bigger all around, so that was another consideration I weighed. So for the same price as the Blade 4080, the Zephyrus M16 is better equipped in 2 very important areas, is otherwise thinner/lighter/slightly more portable than the new Blades, and still well built and fairly minimal in design.
@@uzoochogu the keyboard deck I'm not sure about. Supposedly the main chassis is magnesium alloy, very light and rigid. The top feels like plastic, but I've read that it's a coating to achieve that and that it was changed from the 2022 model which had a soft-touch coating. No flex, but if you push extremely hard you can get some. That would be consistent with either a thin and light metal like aluminum paneling or magnesium alloy paneling, or plastic. It feels different from the plastic bottom cover, so I'm guessing mag alloy.
Enjoying this laptop for some time now. I wish I had a 18" version of it with much better cooling. Comparing it to an actual desktop, I don't consider this a desktop replacement. But it's a great travel companion for longer trips.
Interesting. Mine has an RGB keyboard. I'm not sure if that's because it's the UK version, or because it's the 4080 version. I'm fairly sure it was also advertised has having advanced optimus too.
I recently bought this laptop from noon UAE and one random day it just stopped working. It wouldn't switch on unless connected to a charger. When I returned it to the seller, thay kept the laptop for themselves and refunded the whole amount, without any notice. But the product was smooth and high performance. A friend of mine asked asus showroom about the product and they actually asked him not to buy because it apparently has some manufacturing defect or whatever. Hi there, I need some advice on two Asus laptops. I am looking at the M16 and the Strix G18 but cannot decide which one I should go for. I am not a gamer and will be using the laptop for 3D animation and editing. The M16 has the i9 13900H cpu and the G18 has the 13980HX cpu, so the G18 is much more powerful and has the 18" screen. My biggest concern though is choosing option that is the most reliable has the best build quality as I have had endless hardware issues with my Asus Zephyrus 16 to the point where I had to return it for a refund after experiencing 4 breakdowns in only 3 months! So...I am looking for something powerful but simpler in design with less that can fail/break. I'm also not a big fan of the RGB bar lighting so a simpler design would be great, but I also don't want to sacrifice a huge jump in performance with the G18 if it justifies the higher spec. Which model can you recommend the most between Asus M16 vs Strix G18?
I bought a laptop in 2015. I got the Asus G751gy with a 980m. I never checked back on the whole tech world after that for fear of missing out (fomo). I never wanted for anything since I got it. Fast forward to now, and my beast is starting to show its age and I am in the market for a new one. However, I have no idea what would be an equivalent for the G751gy. It used to be Asus’s top of the line laptop and I am basically looking for another one. Build quality and everything. Right now, I am hovering over the RTX4080 G16 strix scar, but honestly I don’t know anything about the laptop landscape right now. Please help ❤!!!
Would there be any issue or diminishing returns adding a 32GB stick to bring the total to 48GB instead of matching the 16GB for 32GB? I don't understand the duel/quad memory, but would prefer the higher RAM for editing and casual gaming. Thank you!
You are correct. He links to the non mini-led option in the description. I'm not sure he's aware of that. I hope no one buys it mistakenly thinking that's what they're getting. I almost did. @@johnwilson7680 Agree, the 4080 M16 seems to be the perfect balance for portability and power in my opinion. All other 4080s laptops are too big or chunky. Keep an eye for the BestBuy open box. Some users do not like the halo that comes from Mini-LED.

Hopefully, next year 240W charging becomes the norm.
Hey Jarrod, I bought the M16 few days ago but you didn't mention that the laptop can actually burn you if you touch above the keyboard, it gets extremely EXTREMELY hot with fan at full speed (6700 rpm somehow capped!) but the thing is that the CPU and GPU aren't even that hot (80 CPU / 70 GPU) but the issue is like the screen blocks the air exhaust which makes the hot air remains in this area and makes the laptop insanely hot!!!
Yes you can see this at 11:56 Keyboard Temperatures Generally I don't bother mentioning that the back is hot, because that's the case for most laptops, and honestly, you don't need to touch there anyway.

I also bought a legion pro 7i (4090 model) and I'm still waiting for it to be delivered. It's sold out across the entire country (I live in China)
same here, just got the legion pro slim 7i, but not sure if I should return it and switch to the m16 or not
I just got my 4080 Lp7i two days ago and I'm really enjoying it.
Hello! I'm thermal throttling, and I'm will be your best friend if you buy this device. I will be with you in every mood: silent, balance or performance. And i will try to kill CPU and GPU as soon as possible.😊
@@RHYNOTACTICS I also have the same helios (but with 1050ti) and I'll be looking to upgrade later this year. My primary concerns are battery life and performance. Are you satisfied with the 7i's battery life?

Hi Jarrod, thanks for the review! Lots of valuable information as always.

Your reviews just make me confident for what I have chosen!
bought this laptop 5 months ago, love it! amazing graphics. feel and looks very modern plus i love it for coding!
Please tell me where can I find the 4070 version with mini led in US? 🥲
The screws are covered with rubber stoppers because asus laptops frequently lose their screws during regular use. I don't know why but it also happened with my laptop. Thankfully the screw which fell, was found in my house. 😌
The 4080 version of this laptop is what I am interested in but can't seem to find detailed performance reviews anywhere.
Another awesome review 🎉 hopefully the zephyrus g16 and slim 5i will b wcoming soon 🎉🎉🎉
I would love to see Asus Scar 18 compared to Scar 16 to see thermals and more stuff due to smaller chassis 😄

I'm very interested to see the performance difference between this particular model and its respective variant with a 4080/90.

Pretty happy with my purchase so far.
how's the thermals? does it get uncomfortably hot/loud?
@@aybaws Just finished an hour's session of Honkai Star Rail - HSR (pretty graphic intensive) at highest settings (i think?) so I can answer you on this, though its all very subjective hahahaha
Didn't check the actual numbers, but its quite hot to the touch at the top part of the body (basically above the F1-F12 part), but its fine because most of the time the fingers are going to be rested on the keys itself or in between the keys, it doesn't feel hot, at most warm on the keys.
@@hikarisenshi4996 thank you for taking time to type that all out. Really appreciate it, because I'm in a situation where I'm debating to get this year or the previous year's model.

@@aybaws Glad I could help, I was in a dilemma too because there isn't many reviews yet for the 2023 Zephyrus lineups, especially for the 16 inch ones.
The GPU seems to be fine, it’s the CPU that could be helped by a little underclock. Shouldn’t tank perf too much.
I'm pretty sure you can't undervolt the 13900h, which is unfortunate.
You can undervolt the 13900hx though.
Very good.

the Best Buy 4070 one does not have a mini-LED screen - I actually tested it myself and I didn't find it had one.
The US version of the 4070 does NOT have mini-led (or 32GB of ram). Looks like the version he used is from another region. Very confusing by ASUS.

Hi Jarrod! If you could get the 4070 m16 for $1500, would you get that over the 4080 g14? I would prefer the smaller g14 size and better performance but finding it hard to know if that's worth the $1000 difference.
How does it compare to the 4070 G16, given the latter comes in the old M16 chassis?
How's the build quality? Aside from the lid, is the keyboard deck metal too? And how sturdy is it?

Thank you!
