Not many contemporary bands/artists have the balls to cover the Dead and I think John Mayer's done a wonderful job.

You gotta love this guy. His talent is unquestionable and could have covered a ton of songs. Recently,he told the story how he discovered the Dead while recovering from a voice issue…about 3 years ago. Mayer saw in the music 3 years ago what we have seen 50 years ago….Better late than never! A great cover of a beautiful song…Jerry would be happy.

I'm also of the opinion that Mayer kills this song. I'm guessing most of the people ripping him are either trolls or didn't take the time to listen to the song. Excellent cover in my opinion and I freakin' love the dead!! Keep tearing it up Johnny boy I lover to hear mainstream musicians giving some props to the dead, as long as they can do them justice.

This comment aged like the finest wine. Mayer has given us 290 plus shows over 8 years of amazingness. He did Jerry proud. For someone who only caught the end of GD, this was amazing.

I'm a former John Mayer fan gone Grateful Dead (then later Phish) fan. I also play guitar in a band and let me just say that as someone who lost about all respect for John Mayer 10 years ago +/-.. basically after the trio.. He does this song justice, it's not an easy song to play and he rips it up. Great chops, stayed true to the song, great guitar tone, Jerry would respect it so don't be douchebags.

His music spoke to me at one point in my life and as his career path changed, so did my musical taste. I also frowned on his shenanigans in the press being a heart breaker and condoning drug use. Not that I frown on dopers, but I frown on people who publicly speak out about it when your someone with the celebrity status and reach that he has (if people wanna do recreational chemistry, do it on your terms. Not because you saw someone famous condoning it). Watch recent interviews, he even comments on how that article was a mistake and he regrets it. I had watched all these interviews about how he loved the blues, but he retired that part of his life after he stopped selling out arenas with the trio and realized his blues material didn't sell like the rest of his work. Be that as it may, I would say he turned me on to the influences I have now and I'm thankful for that, but his music no longer speaks to me. In reference to your shot at my influences that I mentioned in my comment, I think trey anastasio is twice the guitarist John Mayer is and I think John is a god damn great guitarist.. if you think my influences that I mentioned have done the same thing "for an eternity," do some research. You don't have to be a fan to respect musicianship. Trey performs with philharmonic orchestras and has orchestrated performances from a compositional point of view. Not to mention the 30 year career phish has and they're going just as strong. Phish constantly has changed, ask any of their fans- that's what half of them bitch about.. Them not playing like they use to because they're constantly changing from album to album and tour to your. I don't need to stick up for phish, I'm not that type of Phan because their ticket sales speak for themselves but to label them as the same old dog with old tricks is naive.
Ps: John Mayer will be playing with mike Gordon of phish and Phil Lesh from the dead this summer/fall. Old dog old tricks.

Fair enough. I actually was the opposite. I really despised John Mayer because I just saw his pop image. Then I heard the blues trio and totally changed my tune. I really like how he's diversified. I've even gone back to his early stuff and can actually appreciate it.
His off-stage antics are sort of whatever to me. I can't say I wouldn't have an inflated ego after attaining what he has.

Not that it's necessary to compare John Mayer and Trey... but, for what it's worth, note that JM finger picks the song, where Trey uses the traditional plectrum. This is why his version sounds more authentic... because it's simply more faithful to Jerry's original approach. Also, Mayer's bluesy voice is perfect for this kind of song... much stronger and more confident than Trey's. JM also does a wonderful job of bringing out what's special about the changes in his solos. He really takes it up a level at 5'26"... in a way that I'm pretty sure Jerry would've loved. Jerry was all about that (e.g., Morning Dew)... bringing on the passion, full bore!
The only reason I'm making any comparison at all is... we should probably expect Dead & Company to sound pretty damn good... even better than Fare Thee Well did. Phil won't be there, but Oteil Burbridge is a fantastic bassist and should kill it. If you don't know him, look him up. Some of us, undoubtedly, will avoid the project, because it isn't "core four". Actually, though, it may turn out to be some of the best presentation of the material we've heard in a long time. We won't ever have Jerry back, so we might as well celebrate the best renderings of the songs.
My only concern, if you could call it that, is that Mayer may have funky motives. I believe that he's a fan of the material. When he told that story about hearing Althea for the first time, I could totally see that... because that riff is extremely appealing to a guy like that who cut his teeth on finger picked blues. As a musician, I know how that goes... you hear that riff and you're like, "Goddamn... I never thought anything of this band but, you know what? I gotta go grab my guitar right now"... and then you immediately learn it... and, from there, you begin to fall in love. That's the beauty of music. However... I'm just suspicious that he might be trying to tap into the GD fan base. When guys' careers are slowing, they might want to look for an audience that will stick with them forever... that kind of audience Dave Matthews and Phish have, and not the John Mayer pop audience.
Bottom line... he's not the kind of musician that Deadheads normally embrace. We'll see what happens. But the music should be great, so I'll be out there, supporting it.

+badself I don't know if you ever heard or saw the band Furthur, but I'd be surprised if Dead and Co. can live up to what that band did. All this Fare thee Well nonsense and the publicity that ensued will give this project a big boost, no doubt. John Mayer brings a known name to the roster, bound to help sales, but is controversial in his being chosen. John Kadlecik has dedicated himself to playing the music of the Grateful Dead and plays/sings in a way I prefer over John Mayer or Trey. And I don't care how good Oteil is, you can't replace Phil. Phil decided to hang up touring, as is well documented, and I respect him for that (sort of), but Dead and Co. does to excite me all that much.

    • @RTKFilms
      @RTKFilms 8 років тому +7

+TheTestingGrounds I've seen Furthur 13 times and Dead & Co only twice. I love Phil and Kadelecik, but Phil's singing is horrific and Mayer outplays Kadelecik every time. The energy is amazing at these shows. I used to hate Mayer, and his voice is way different than Jerry's, but he's cleaner and he's a perfectionist. Give them another shot this tour. You won't be disappointed :)

6 years later from this comment and you can really really see how much JM has grown into the scene. at the time you wrote this i was still skeptical but i have been a JM fan for years now. john has grown into a peoples musician really similar in the way jerry was a peoples musician as well, with their own nuances of course. i believe john is a fan of the material and his passion shines bright. the pace is picked up a fair bit in this 2021 tour and you are right, this has turned into the best iteration in so many years.

Since when are Dead Heads haters? You negative people are just as douchey as you say Mayer is. He's getting into the Dead in a serious way and playing lots of their songs live and probably turning his fans onto these great tunes. There's nothing worse that judgmental Dead Heads. his music doesn't really speak to me, but he is a very good guitar player.

That said, he's been fitting this into his sets a lot this tour and if you honestly think the way he played doesn't 'hit it', then I'd have to say I'm not sure if you 'get it'. And no, I'm not even a John Mayer 'fan' per-say. I somehow stumbled onto this. Last thing, this has MUCH more soul than anything Phil/Bobby is doing w/ Furthur.

Not odd at all. One thing learned listening to the dead was their way of reinterpretation including improvisation for the multitude of songs in their repertoire - including covers. Jerry didn't sing all the verses to plenty of Dylan songs. I'm sure plenty of Dylan fans were perturbed. Why fall into the trap again catbox? The dead taught that some things just weren't critical at all times, including them remembering the lyrics.

When you cover a song you are supposed to change it to fit your style and show that you are a real musician and have the ability to do that. I have grown up listening to the Dead and John Mayer did a great job with this song by adding the blues to it because he is a blues guitarist.

Did this start out as Queen of California? Love that song.

+UglyToontown Yes - that is definitely the end of Queen of California which is a great song with a very jammable outtro.

yeah, which is impressive because QOC uses a capo.. but it made for a fuckin seamless transition

Alex Bieger actually he plays QOC in a capo acoustic then switched to the strat, Althea and QOC must’ve been in the same key that’s why i sounded “seamless” you don’t have to have your guitar capo up
