I feel your pain I lost my older brother this year at 56. He took me to my first show RFK90 and he was in bad health but made it to several of these shows on their final tour and called my mom and me and talked about how great he felt, like he was cured, and how great the band was. For a little while it's been hard to go back to these shows so I haven't. But I've been revisiting the phish ad Dead shows we saw it the 90s and revisiting some pretty strong memories
John Mayer does a far greater job at filling in for Jerry than from anyone I ever thought imaginable. Then, on his own, he opens up completely differently directions. This guy HAS IT. I wish him a long and splendid career, as it seems to be headed right now!
Personally I think of Weir as less of a traditional “rhythm” player and more an accent based one. I guess that falls into the “rhythm” category, but I think his best work is when he’s adding texture and little details to the rhythm section. Its one of those things that doesn’t stand out all that much but everyone would notice if it wasn’t there
Agreed. 💯. The problem is that he’s usually buried in the mix and you can’t really hear him. I think if you want to get a real idea of how good he really is listen to ‘71. He was up in the mix a little more.
To those of you ragging on John Mayer's playing, or comparing him to Jerry and saying he can never measure up to Jerry, I saw several Dead shows where Jerry was very obviously loaded on heroin and was not, himself, measuring "up to Jerry", so there's that. Now I'm NOT criticizing Jerry for using; I wasn't in his shoes sharing his burden so I'm in NO position to judge him for using but we've got to stop worshiping Jerry as if everything he played was sunshine and lollipops. There were many times when his playing was subpar and I DO think Jerry would approve of John Mayer's playing tribute to his memory.

Uncle John's Band Grateful Dead Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more, Cause when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door. Think this through with me, let me know your mind, Wo, oh, what I want to know, is are you kind? It's a buck dancer's choice my friend; better take my advice. Come hear uncle John's band playing to the tide, Come on along, or go alone, he's come to take his children home. Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.
I loved the Dead and especially Jerry's playing back in the early days when I saw them live many times. Hard drugs ended up killing Jerry but now, as if by miracle, the astounding guitar player John Mayer has stepped in and brought this great American musical institution back to life. We should all be grateful.
This is still their absolute best UJB to date. Such a crisp and inspired performance with direction. It's so incredibly easy to get lost in the jams on this one. Man I love this band (Yes I love The Grateful Dead as well)
I’ll admit I didn’t want to like John...but once I realized they were not trying to replace JG just keep playing and playing really well...my compass was trued up. He gets it and I get him.
@@misterclaus8391 John Mayer, can you hook me up with a VIP package for the show on Friday May 26th? Money is tight, but not as tight as your skills on the guitar lol j/k. You're probably not John Mayer but it's worth a shot
Thank you for keeping the music going. Its amazing to still have the wonderful opportunity to be able to enjoy the same music from such wonderful times I such a questionable time more many
I started to listen to the Dead when I was 14 , I am 56 now and it has been a wonderful trip so far. You have a lifetime of Dead ahead of you. I really hope you enjoy the trip as much as I have 👍
My dream is to be a famous guitar player I know over 30 song that is like Black sabith I know matalika a lot of rock and if I am old enough and good enough I think they will let join their band I mean if I really want to
I have a really crunchy tape from the soundboard, from when they performed this song in Egypt during the third dynasty, B.C., on that tour. They were really hitting their stride while the pyramids were being built back in the day. Good memories, I've still got my ticket stubs...
Very nice at this slower tempo; also, I admire John Mayer for being willing to put a solo career on hold to be "just" part of a larger group -- especially given the great job he is doing here
It's not on hold. Guy released an album and toured solo in the spring last year, dead an company all summer, another solo tour in late summer through early fall, then last minute Dead and Co did a fall tour, which was only put on hold before they could finish out the last few shows because his appendix burst. They were back at it in February but he did some more solo shows in January. He's a monster and he's just making more and more music then ever.
He’s also featured in many other artists songs lately, he’s genuinely so passionate about music and playing the guitar, check out his Instagram live videos on UA-cam of him just jamming out at home
I'm sure he didn't mind putting his club gigs on hold while he plays in the highest grossing tours of each year..as they were pre-95. But these bands are apples and oranges, D&CO and TGD. The only similarities are 3 of the 6 members.
@@kgisabeast I saw the video where he saw back to the future with McFly playing Johnny B. Goode and he said I want a guitar so his parents gave him a second hand one with 4 strings. He was so good by 16 he went to Berklee School of Music.
I don't like the slower tempo, but this is Dead and Company, not the Grateful Dead. Mayer's a good guitarist and I really like the bass player but I'd like them to step it up a bit.
This is a beautiful version of UJB, perfectly paced and everyone at the top of their game. In the jam sections especially you can let your attention roam from instrument to instrument and *everyone* is doing something interesting without fighting each other for attention. That is jam perfection and the smiles from the band members tell their own story. Joyful!
Great options from this channel. The crowd at SPAC was overcrowded but really fun. Everyone was passing to everyone else- best crowd ever in my concert going history
wjlucy that was a fun show. Drove over 700 miles for that show there were probably 6 or 7 shows closer it was such a cool trip I wouldn't have done it any other way
I saw them on New Years Eve at the L.A. Forum, after taking a long break from all Dead related shows, after a bad trip at L.A. Sports Arena in 1993. Was soooooo happy to hear that John Mayer had joined!! I was diggin' him before he joined D&C. They've gone and made a man outta the pretty boy. Lol Being a former pretty boy in high school, in my younger days, 35 yrs ago, I can dig it. And boy can they play. Where does the time go?
Everyone has a favorite song or two.. Mine is Eyes and Speedway Boogie &.... 100 more... But does anyone know anyone that doesn't love UJB? UJB is the Dead. Captures the beauty, jamming and space all in one. Lyrics are it. I started in ''79 350++ Dead 200++JGB & many variations of the Dead along the way. Became friends with some of the band.. "Never had such a good time in my life before.."
Also my first Dead & Co. show. And I agree that it was magical. I also liked this venue. It's closer to home and easier to handle for this old DeadHead. I wish they'd return to this cool little out of the way place. I'd be there.
To all the Mayer haters, who else do you see filling Jerry's role? Its hard to do, yes - but you cant tell me this guy didnt commit all the way with this. He plays with the dead & then does his own concert after. He has already had praise from Clapton, and countless others. The exisiting members of the Dead seem to like it, so why cant the haters? And the Dead isnt about hate, just good vibes.
Listen really closely to what bobbys playing here, especially during the solo - no one is specially playing chords but its all spelled out between the two guitars, bass and piano.
No one can replace Jerry. Jerry is gone and he isn't coming back. But the music must live on as well as our sub culture and with the possible exception of Jimmy Herring, I can't think of a better replacement than John Mayer. Jeff Chimenti is on fire! Oteil is as good as Phil ever was and the band has evolved in a good and positive way.
This is so sweet. What a beautiful UJB. When dead and company formed I didn't even give John Mayor a chance, or anyone else. although I loved John Mayors personal solo career. I only new about 5 John Mayer songs at the time. They were all a major hits with me. My favorite at the time, maybe still, was waiting on the world to change but that was a more recent song when that one came out maybe 10 yrs ago or so. It was so motowny and then some. Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Sorta, Marvin Gaye Issac Hayes, James Brownish. You get the idea💡 I first realized John Mayer on the Chappelle Show. It was so funny, but John's Mayor guitar was Spectacular. I was in a dark place at the time. So, I kinda left everything behind, said alot of stupid things out of ignorance of the sceen between 97 to Very Very Recently, about a few years. So I been watching UA-cam and I realize how ignorant I've been. But I was in a dark place for all those years. I said some critical dumb ass shit, but I was in the darkest of places. But I had the Magic Power of the Music in me. And it saved me and perhaps another person or too. Bobs so on target with his playing. Dead and company are having their final tour this year. I hope I will be able to go to a show(s) again. I want to see dead and company at least once before the diss-band. But the beauty of the dead, is that their are always gonna be the videos as the bootlegs use to be. I'm planning on having a mini theater when I by my home. High tech every thing, and large enough to have a dance 💃 🕺 floor. I'm gonna have party's with a large silver screen, while I wait on better holographic technology, but I actually believe this technology exists already in a great form, and, you can figure out the rest. Between 97 and pretty much now I missed out on all the shows, but like I said I'm gonna party and boogie with all my friends, and then in private with my wife and My boy. Gotta alotta catching up to do. But boy am I looking forward to it. The beauty of it all is that it's all going to be so so fresh for me. The Bob Weir Wolf Pack shows, and so many other musician's too. And I can't wait. I'd like to add this, as much as I love a live terrapin, and who doesn't, but my favorite has always been the studio version if lady with a fan, and the rest of it. It's my all time favorite Grateful Dead Studio. To me it's perfectly produced, it's flawless to me. And so so sweet. You can really actually feel the spirit in this biggest way with thst album.
Jerry would be smiling, very nice & wow can Mayer strum, I did not know, he was this good! Nice to see Booby w/the big stache & Mickey w/the same old smile.
Everyone bitching about this is wrong , or this ain't Jerry..... Think about this, a younger generation gets to experience a facet of the dead at least. Bob is making sure to pass along the dead to generations. John Mayer, I don't care what you say, the cat is on point. How about going and experiencing some of what may not go on much longer and enjoy the scene and the memories
As someone who was born 3 months after Jerry died, I greatly appreciate having a great successor band to see in concert. My first concert seeing them will be this August and I'm literally sooo excited!!
Agree with you so strongly. These are Jerry's songs (and Bob, JP Barlow, and Robert's) John is helping pass them on and he's phenomenal but not Jerry. I was lucky to see Jerry 35 times but many weren't. I'm happy and hoping to see these songs as long as I can
I was enuff have seen the dead alpine valley in 88.....so my pop listened to the dead...and the stones in vitenam...the music has sprit...it also went with me in 90...
Oh YES. His pulsating rhythm playing is impeccable. He provides an incredible foundation upon which both the Dead & Dead & Company leads soar. I've been saying this for years ...to anyone who would listen.
Because for one thing the grateful dead had a guitarist who could play all types of music. Like bruce hornsby once said jerry's guitar sang. Bob dylan said we will never see or hear anybody play guitar like jerry could. When jerry was on he war a monster on guitar what sweet sounds came from his guitars. Jerry's tiger and wolf guitars were auctioned in nyc for close to 2million a piece.
Ive been going to to Dead shows from the beginning, I lost count. They were very rarely ever this tight . We liked the pandemonium, This might be a little scripted, but for better or worse...WOW.! John is doing a fantastic job. We can feel Jerry beaming down on him.
At first, we talked about the 3 joints of Jamaican weed that were sitting at home in the front pocket of the "other" shirt I had on when I rolled them. And how it was a shame that I changed shirts. Then we talked about my "conversion" into a Dead Head in my 2nd year of college by being exposed to nonstop Grateful Dead music thanks to my roommate...and how I didn't "get" the Dead until I was tripping on some shrooms and how after THAT I understood and was hooked. We also talked about the difficulty it was being a Demi-God among Dead Heads. Jerry said he couldn't really understand it. In his words "All I'm doing is playing music and spreading the love of music". I remember very stonily saying (is that a word, stonily?) "Well exactly. Music IS love". He started laughing and chanting "Music is Love" like a mantra and Earl Saunders wandered by and picked up the mantra and we were all saying "Music is Love" and then somebody put an "Ohmm" behind it and we ALL laughed hilariously. All I remember after that is saying "Ice Cream. I MUST have ice cream". In other words, a fun time was had by all, particularly by me. I was in the presence of Demi-Gods, after all. /|\

John Mayer plays multiple styles: Blues trio, pop/rock band, solo, Country. He's a brilliant singer/songwriter. I wasn't suprised that he can play Dead, but so well! I'm definitely a fan. Avoid his album "Any Given Thursday" unless you enjoy a lot of crowd noise, mostly girls screaming.
I’m baffled by criticism of John Mayers brilliant contribution to this 50 year musical movement. Appreciation is lost when comparison starts
The man is clearly a brilliant and talented musician. Jerry smiles on Dead and Company for keeping his songs alive.

Wo, oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?
I live in a silver mine and I call it beggar's tomb;
I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune,
Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?
Come hear uncle John's band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about, here beside the rising tide.
Come hear uncle John's band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone, he's come to take his children home.
Wo, oh, what I want to know, how does the song go.
Fam! So blessed! Grateful!!
I loved the Dead and especially Jerry's playing back in the early days when I saw them live many times. Hard drugs ended up killing Jerry but now, as if by miracle, the astounding guitar player John Mayer has stepped in and brought this great American musical institution back to life. We should all be grateful.
Key takeaway here is WE SHOULD BE GRATEFUL.
This is still their absolute best UJB to date. Such a crisp and inspired performance with direction. It's so incredibly easy to get lost in the jams on this one. Man I love this band (Yes I love The Grateful Dead as well)
Totally awesome! I love it!
Love you all so much!!!!
This is my favoutie song I know other Deadheads would digargeee ,but i fell in love with this song especiallly trippin!!!!!!!!
Me too
I’ll admit I didn’t want to like John...but once I realized they were not trying to replace JG just keep playing and playing really well...my compass was trued up. He gets it and I get him.
He's a tha best guitarist they EVER HAD.. I LOVE JERRY BUT HE AS FAR AS GUITARISTS ARE CONCERNED, IS NOT EVEN IN THa SAME LEAGUE AS Mayer
He's tha best guitarist there ever was to take over Garcia...
@@misterclaus8391 John Mayer, can you hook me up with a VIP package for the show on Friday May 26th? Money is tight, but not as tight as your skills on the guitar lol j/k. You're probably not John Mayer but it's worth a shot
Love you guys
Thank you for keeping the music going. Its amazing to still have the wonderful opportunity to be able to enjoy the same music from such wonderful times I such a questionable time more many
I love the greatful dead so much it is my favorite band and I am only 11 my dad got me in to it and I love 💗 it
I started to listen to the Dead when I was 14 , I am 56 now and it has been a wonderful trip so far. You have a lifetime of Dead ahead of you. I really hope you enjoy the trip as much as I have 👍
I will I am now playing the dead on my guitar 🎸 and I am a lefty I Can play ripple and Scarlet Begonias they are my favorite songs
@@soopymoopy3542 I will look forward to seeing you on stage soon🎸
Imagine if I could play with dead and company
Joyful!
My favorite dead song
God Bless John Boy, because without his contribution...
The joy in the crowd is so cool
Timeless !
I always feel a sleep at this part of the show...then they pull you back into the song..I wake up fast
Literally and figuratively, the Dead don't die they only multiply.
Yup!
Great options from this channel. The crowd at SPAC was overcrowded but really fun. Everyone was passing to everyone else- best crowd ever in my concert going history
wjlucy that was a fun show. Drove over 700 miles for that show there were probably 6 or 7 shows closer it was such a cool trip I wouldn't have done it any other way
That was my first show! Got from the lawn to the pit
Hittin up SPAC this tour, can’t wait!
Lol
Being a former pretty boy in high school, in my younger days, 35 yrs ago, I can dig it.
And boy can they play. Where does the time go?
Love this!
If I only had one GD song to listen to, it would be UJB. If I had two, it would be UJB and Eyes.
Speedway is one of my favorites too.
Its so good
This was the first show I experienced Dead & Company. Fortunate enough to attend both Shoreline shows, both beautifully magical.
Also my first Dead & Co. show. And I agree that it was magical. I also liked this venue. It's closer to home and easier to handle for this old DeadHead. I wish they'd return to this cool little out of the way place. I'd be there.
"Where does the time go?"
It´s four years now, since I first heard Dead & Co.
Nowadays I hardly listen to anything else ; )
To all the Mayer haters, who else do you see filling Jerry's role? Its hard to do, yes - but you cant tell me this guy didnt commit all the way with this. He plays with the dead & then does his own concert after. He has already had praise from Clapton, and countless others. The exisiting members of the Dead seem to like it, so why cant the haters? And the Dead isnt about hate, just good vibes.
One of the best string quartets ever on the planet.
He feels the music
Way cool. 🌸
4:00 Great rhythm riff from Weir, and Billy really going to the toms!
Thank you! 🐾⚡🌹⚡
Nicely done!
They really goin like 8 minutes in. One of the best songs i think dead and co does.
Saw these guys last year in Michigan. Decent show, but I can't go to any more. I miss Jerry too much
yea, this just don’t get it
kpaul79 NO, they don't! I'm more interested in seeing something like Railroad Earth or the like
Woody Harrelsons brother enjoying the show at 5:37
@Dead & Company please come play Wheatland again!
sounds great
This is so sweet.
Wonderful
This is the white wine Sunday version…
Not mad at it😅
John's getting it done. Not trying to take the place of Jerry. John's trying to be the best Jerry ever. Doing a damn good job at it .
Fantastic! 💚
absolutly beautiful
Wishing John was expected to Cover Jerry!
I hope John will get his own PACE & helping others. Excellent, So Far 14:35 Naomi Radtke
Good point Jerry wasn't that good at that age. Frankly, It took 15 years of playing
Miaaa I’m seeing them august too! My first concert ever.
Goddam how bob weir has been underrated as a guitar player.
Oh YES. His pulsating rhythm playing is impeccable. He provides an incredible foundation upon which both the Dead & Dead & Company leads soar. I've been saying this for years ...to anyone who would listen.
he really has a style all his own
Because for one thing the grateful dead had a guitarist who could play all types of music.
The Dead...live.✌️
Ive been going to to Dead shows from the beginning, I lost count. They were very rarely ever this tight . We liked the pandemonium, This might be a little scripted, but for better or worse...WOW.! John is doing a fantastic job. We can feel Jerry beaming down on him.
GOD DAMN so good
love your GOD DAMN. and agree
Saw them at Folsom Field this last summer. They were so damn good.
So good
I smoked weed with Jerry in 1974. It was HIS. And I haven't washed my lips since then. All true, except that last sentence.
Lucky you.
I mean smoking one...with Jerry lol
Good Shit Man
What did you guys talk about? And how good was the smoke compared to today? Lol 👍
Drums sound fucking amazing!!
Neat jam 🎸
I'm dying to know how Mayer got his guitar to sound like Wolf...
Pretty damn groovy, John.
what a good rhythm baby
Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more,
Cause when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door.
Think this through with me, let me know your mind,
Wo, oh, what I want to know, is are you kind?
It's a buck dancer's choice my friend; better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now and the fire from the ice.
Will you come with me? won't you come with me?
Wo, oh, what I want to know, will you come with me?
Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?
Their wall are built of cannonballs, their motto is "don't tread on me".
Come hear uncle John's band playing to the tide,
Come with me, or go alone, he's come to take his children home.
It's the same story the crow told me; it's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait,

Is this, legit, the only vid on here where John’s using the Super Eagle 2?
He seemed to stop using it pretty quickly.
Avoid AGT? No way Jose! One of my favorites of jm!
Still on the Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion for 50 years. Not just a band, a mental health plan.
