    I just wanna thank you for making these kinds of videos the way you do, a casual and educational approach is what will probably reach most of the community. I had a fresh 110 warrior tank BRH in my group today, and he told us at the start "Hey, i havent been here before, lead the way", wich ended up in my walking ahead and immolating things on my warlock accordingly. But about halfway through he ended up realizing its not that difficult and pulled more and bigger groups :) As long as people actually try tanking they will get it right quite quickly.

      tanking in general is pretty straightforward. lots of little nuances to be sure, but pretty straightforward overall. I find the most difficult thing tanking a new dungeon, is finding the optimal path. if you come late in an expansion and it's been figured out, you'll get flamed for not using it but not taught what it is.
      something healers and tanks both share. if you do the job well enough nobody says much. do it really well on a tank and people notice quickly, do it really well on a healer and it can still go unnoticed. but the moment you make even the slightest mistake, people are on you like stink on a warthog.

    I loved the part of this video where you addressed that pulling like a twat can actually slow down your dungeon. I realize that, like anything, peoples perception of time spent is relative but I wish more people would be aware of the fact that waiting to rez someone or waiting for a healer to get mana back can actually slow things down. It's like speeding in the real world to get somewhere but then hitting a red light at every intersection.
    Anyway, great video as usual.

    It's funny, as someone who's casual tanked for years, I always want to know what the trash pulls are like. So many people have told me "if you're worried about trash, you're doing something wrong." So many dungeon guides skip trash and only show boss fights because "who dies to trash, right?" Finally someone who understands trash mechanics are important also.

    • @Nittweed
      @Nittweed 8 років тому +5

      As someone who's healed in lots of mythic+, I can tell you without a doubt that the trash packs in this expansion are far more dangerous than the bosses.

    As a tank main spec, when I do my random PUG heroic, I love, LOVE being the one in charge of the run. The first pack is alway a "test pack", to see how the DPS and healer are performing, then I adapt my pull/pace according to that.
    However, one thing that I'll have to strongly disagree with : I never, EVER, let DPS dictate how the run should go and let them pull. I know the numbers, I know my (pet) healer, I am the one to pull. A DPS that pulls ahead another pack while the current one isn't dead is a douche.
    Mistakes can happen, so if this happens once or twice, no problem, just get aggro on the new pack and carry on. On that does is consistently ? Yeah, I'm gonnal watch him die, so will my healer. That usually tends to calm them, and if not, repeat as necessary, until they stop or bitch out and leave. Most of the times, the other DPS in the run have no problem with that.
    I already see people saying that make ME the douche, but frankly, I don't care much. So far, it has worked perfectly for me !

    For all new tanks: A note on Dargrul at the end of Neltharion's Lair. The boss can be tanked anywhere in the room faced away from the group, no need to get up against the wall. The knockback can be ignored by a tank who uses their active mitigation just after the tiny knockback that he doesn't chase you during. So for Warriors- Shield Block, Bears- Ironfur, Paladins- Shield of the Righteous, Death Knights- Blood Shield from Death Strike, Monks- Ironskin Brew? Not certain on that one. Demon Hunters- Demon Spikes. PS: Note that if he places a wall inside his hitbox he needs to be moved or his next attack will break it.

    Cool tip preach. As a Brew, or a monk in general. You can interrupt with paralysis on most uninterruptible casts.
    Really helps on things like Raven dive in Black Rook Hold and other crucial abilities that need to be dodged, but you can instead skip them with Paralysis and Leg sweep.
    Makes tanking as a monk feel even better with how you can increase your skill through these little tricks.

    The not turning around part is what you really really really got teached in tbc-heroics. As I was a fury-warrior that content taught me to never ever get away from a mobs butt. Those Insta-kill-Cleaves where Nightmare. Therefore I naturally do it. Another reason I really like to do ist is to kind of see what the group is doing.

    Just something to add on your point about walls. If you havea demon hunter in your group, if possible always tank next to a wall, that way he can fel rush into the wall and not end up 5 ft away from the boss and experience a big dps loss.

    Preach, just some BrM specific tips. Those big rock guys will not do the frontal rock cone thing if you stop them when they cast it. As a BrM you can do this with Leg Sweep, but you can also use Paralyze as an interrupt, it only has a 15 sec cooldown, and I know it's hard CC, but it stops casts as well. This also works on the Scorpions at the end when they cast Frenzy, and the metamorphosis worms (and of course many other mobs in other dungeons). Also as a panda Quaking Palm works in the same way, which I don't see on your bars at all. Paralyze also good for stopping a Pelter that jumps away. Paralyze is so good, it's border line op, instant cast min long CC with a 15 second cooldown, and I rarely see people use it, not even as cc, but an interrupt.

    • @cooltv2776
      @cooltv2776 8 років тому

      im just a random casual but even I knew paralyze works as an interrupt. once had a mostly mythic geared DPS (I tank) ask what those purple lines appearing are and whos interrupting

  • @ghostfacedninja1000
    @ghostfacedninja1000 8 років тому +2

    As a tank I get annoyed if a DPS consistently tries to pull for me. Usually I am going as fast as I think is possible, and it can quite often result in messy pulls that take longer. Them pulling for me once or twice near the beginning, ok take that as a hint to go faster. But it often tends to mean you cannot do any kind of LoS pulling, which is annoying as that can be a super effective way to get nice death balls out of otherwise grim pulls.
    Saying that, as a DPS I will not hesitate to pull if the tank is being super slow... How about those tanks that stop to skin things tho :S

  • @Thomcrow
    @Thomcrow 8 років тому

    You can use monk paralysis to stop the grubs from casting meta. And it's ranged. Just another control thing. Paralysis can be used in a lot of the dungeons to help with add casting and stuff. (just be sure to have agro after cause it resets it)

    Awesome video. Can't wait until we get into raiding. That's where I'm intimidated. It's the tank swapping, marking targets, positioning, tank communication. I know I need to just jump in and do it but it's a little bigger than a five man lol. Keep it up sir.

    • @richardmathes4383
      @richardmathes4383 8 років тому

      Ziggy Holley taunt swapping isn't too hard man. Just get into Emerald Nightmare and have at it. The other tank can position the boss at the start and you can swap off from there. Also, fights like Cenarius with important add positioning, just ask to be the tank on Cenarius so you don't have to worry about moving adds and shit like that until you get comfortable.

    • @pharynx007
      @pharynx007 8 років тому +1

      i love raid tanking, easiest role to play in a raid. unless you're the raid leader, or ask for assist, you shouldn't be needing to do any marking. positioning raid bosses is the same as in dungeons. (face them away, in general). if you know the fight, tank communication can be accomplished by just setting the other tank as your focus so you can see their debuffs/stacks.
      i know preach said he doesn't like taunting, but in raiding that is the only way to do a tank swap. (hell, i typically *only* use taunt to tank swap, or the rare instances of a DPS blowing DPS CD's to try to rip threat... aka my friends are dicks.)

    another point on facing the boss away from the group that i had to get into the habit of, (first raid lead always yelled at me for doing it) but the boss isn't really *there* like, it isn't a wall. unless there is a specific reason for wanting a slow spin of the boss, just fucking run right through it. it won't hurt you any more than a slow turn would. (not much anyways, i guess there is a chance you might take a hit that you could've dodged/parried/blocked, but you get the boss in position much faster)

      people like to stack characters in one spot, this would require all the melee to run to the other side of the boss, and the ranged probably cant. its harder for almost everyone to run to the other side of the boss than it is for the tank to turn it around

    • @pharynx007
      @pharynx007 8 років тому +1

      Alex Gregory uh. what? no shit. my point was for the tank to run through the boss, instead of around it as it is faster to face the bosses ass at the melee.
      i don't know what comment you're actually replying to, but neither me or the other guy that commented said anything about **not** turning the boss around

    CONCLUSION: Be aware of your surroundings. Check in on your team, their health and damage, and what they are capable of and their damage output. Check on your healer's well being(especially mana) and their heals. Know that the tank is integral in the dungeon, they control the flow and the action of the dungeon. Understand mechanics and environmental effects, and use the environment to your benefit(or even some mechanics). The trash can get dangerous when handled recklessly, if you know their mechanic and you are sure of your own capabilities go ahead. Learn the dungeon as a whole, not just bits and pieces(e.g. learn the mobs as well, any timers). Final tip: Keep the boss's back to your team.

    Preach, what is your hate for taunt? I "grew up" in the days of TBC and Wrath, where you would need taunt for unruly DPS. I didn't tank much again til MoP, when it was very clear that taunt was mandatory for any tank-swap mechanic. I can understand it's overuse being a crutch, but used properly it is a potent tool.

    Pay attention to trash abilities. Things like shockwaves can be side step. Run to enemy casters and melee trash will follow. As a DK I don't grip caster as my initial pull, I just run to them and save my grip. Just little things and positioning make a run way more enjoyable.

    • @B4K4157
      @B4K4157 8 років тому

      See I used to do this as well, and I'd like to ask: Why do you feel that is?
      If you're worried about the DPS pulling off you, threat being what it is thesedays you can stop pressing buttons when a mob is at half HP and it'll attack you right up until it dies.
      It does increase DPS effectiveness. For the same reason we group up mobs so they can be AoE'd down, waiting until that last mob is dead is mostly just a missed opportunity for more AoE.
      It's not always the right call (Healer mana is low, Bolstering means bringing a mob with 10% HP left to a new pack means they're all 30% harder, new pack and old pack have some horrible synergy, etc) but it's definitely going to help a lot of the time.

    I've stopped tanking this expansion to switch to dps. In my raid group tanking was never the issue, in mythic+ the tank is very important but I feel like in legion the tanks just have to be able to do the very simple mechanic per boss and survivability is hardly a thought...

    • @Merlininsider
      @Merlininsider 8 років тому

      Yeah, as long as you know your class and use your mitigations correctly. Healers will tell you that two tanks of the same class with the same type of gear, can be entirely different to heal if one knows what to do and the other just spams buttons. (Ofc, if you're starting to go higher m+, you usually have some understanding on what to do.) :)

    Mythic BRH is a complete tank nightmare when you're first learning because of the bat stairs that have to be tanked at a very specific pace that depends entirely on your group.

    • @oosmexypandaoo4194
      @oosmexypandaoo4194 8 років тому

      MrStreager I find the bat stairs easy honestly, pull it in 2 stages and on the second stage I run up to mini stairs near boss, I then pop a cd and let dps nuke them down

      You can pull it all easily. The issue is they randomly drop aggro and if you pull to many or your DPS aren't cleave heavy you can just lose your healer or dps randomly.

    The problem for me is im a clicker,
    I've been playing wow for about 9 months now and I'm not really that good at the game. Also my computer has some... Graphical issues and when I try to move from a mechanic it's delayed and much slower, sometimes in dungeons I can get as low as 5fps. I don't really plan to get a new computer anytime soon, so ya. I don't know what I would do besides practicing my abilities with macros and stuff.🙂

    I wish all DPS would either tank a little or watch a few videos on tanking. It would improve everyone's experience.
    If you don't understand agro or threat it is time you learnt how to play.
    If you turn mobs around you can see if you lose a mob and pick it up again much quicker.

    Was hoping you'd mention the BS the devs did to mob movement that makes positioning mobs a goddamn nightmare now. It was so bad that I stop bothering to turn things around outside of raids.

    active mitigation negates the knockback from molten crash, and the little punt he does before molten crash doesent move boss as he is rooted in place for second or two after it, no need for walls

    • @SirStirAlot
      @SirStirAlot 8 років тому

      dargul does, "landslide(spike wave)" it punts you back slightly, you can move back to boss without moving boss, after that he always does "molten crash" that is the big knockback, but if you have active mitigation up for molten crash, you wont get knockd back

    • @richardmathes4383
      @richardmathes4383 8 років тому

      SirStirAlot don't think this is true, and if it is then I need to file a bug report. My main is a tank and I have enough haste to keep my active mitigation up 100% of the time and I still get blasted a million miles away from that crash.

      gregory weiler yeah feelsbadman. Thought tanking mythic EN made me kinda alright, but you're right. 100% uptime on my active mitigation and still get blasted through the air. Not a big issue tho since I can just charge back in immediately.

    Was just reminded of a question I had ages ago when expertise was removed. Do melee dps still get parried and dodged more often when they attack from the front? haven't done melee dps since mop so it hasn't really been on my mind.

      Was removed in WoD I believe. You will always hit your target unless there is a particular debuff.

    • @pharynx007

      i believe it is just a flat 3% chance for the mob dodging/parrying. but don't quote me on that.

    preach good sir i know ur talking about good habits to have in general as tank. but as u play prot warrior because u can hit intercept real quick how would the wall part play out in that scenario? You can just immediately charge in as soon as the knockback is hit so it kinda makes up for it? i definetly see what u mean about walls though as its just using clever game mechanics for an advantage which i always gotta respect.

    • @AwkwardSquirtles
      @AwkwardSquirtles 8 років тому +1

      If the wall's in the way you don't have to intercept. It's something less to do, there's no risk of you getting it wrong and the mob moving a bit.

    Question: Does tanking the boss backwards to the raid makes it impossible for it to block, dodge, parry?
    Question 2: does this apply to raiding? do tanks have more responsible mechanics to watch out for in raid bosses?

    • @cooltv2776
      @cooltv2776 8 років тому

      you are correct in question 1, nothing can dodge, block, or parry attacks from behind (this goes for players in pvp as well)
      and I dont know about the second question

    • @nhagan001
      @nhagan001 8 років тому

      in regards to your question, although a little late, bosses CANNOT block moves from behind, but they still keep the chance to dodge or parry, although hit chance went away, so that is only a factor for dual-wielders at most.
      in response to your second question, yes. you do have more mechanics. tanks always have their own mechanics for each and every boss to worry about.s Sometimes mechanics that hit ranged dps only hit the tank too because you have only melee. and sometimes you just have to do dps mechanics yourself.
