What's interesting is how the driver fits into the equation. Just because fuel injection and ECUs are better doesn't mean they will always win a race. Chassis tuning, driver ability and weather all play a role in the over all tuning picture as well as individual knowledge of conditions and the race track itself. It's fascinating to see how one single part of a race car can become an entire industry where companies like Haltech spend millions of dollars to push the envelop and further what's possible. Pretty cool. Great video that is easy to understand without being watered down.
You guys really hit the market with the ease of install and functionality of your ECU's. I have never wanted to tinker with engine management in all my life due to being afraid, now I can't wait to save up enough for an Elite 750 for my '92 vg30.
I remember replacing my battary once. When I restarted the car, the dashboard flashed 'BASE'. It turned out the ECU and car other computers was reset to base figuires, and the instructions required about 200 km for the ECU to relearn the engine operating figuires for my style of driving and habit.
i know Im asking the wrong place but does any of you know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the account password. I love any help you can offer me
@Jalen Conor thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
This isn’t a new release but the information shared together with its delivery was spot on, why would you not want an electronic engine management system! It’s great when manufacturers take the time to relate to the wide consumer market. This shows a wealth of commitment matched only by a passion to achieve the best possible end user experience. Thanks again Scott and thank you kindly to Haltech for their dedication!
Outstanding. You know I was just watching with volume down because my daughter is trying to sleep but what I saw with you drawing was fantastic it would be cool to have you drawing everything I just seen in video lol I learned so much
Scott, thanks for the video...it really condensed the concept of how an ECU vs. a carb works. My only question is: if I'm not obsessed with performance (and not an electrical engineer), and I just want to keep my bike running steadily and reliably, where is a good place to start learning how to interpret engine trouble codes and how to diagnose electrical problems instead of having to go to the dealer every time I get a bad code? Having said that, am I better off sticking with my carbs and throttle cables :D ? Thanks and cheers!!
yep, I think what I'm learning is that any tuning I tried to do would end up with the engine running worse or not at all. I think, ( but I'm not sure) that you MUST do the tuning with the car on a dyno. So, either buy a dyno(kidding) or get access to one. But, then of course it'll be the techs and not you that does the tuning I expect.
I'm an auto electrician by trade and would like to learn more about fault-finding and repairing ECUs and modules in general. Can you please advise on an university or trade related courses to learn the in-depth information on how ECUs are constructed how to test their components and what components they consist of. I have A fair understanding from my own research and fault finding throughout my career but am wanting to take it to the next level. Please keep the content coming
Nice video very imformative meaning to say we need to do some adjustments on our ECU if we are considering of changing our exhaust system thanks for sharinh the knowledge.
Please forgive my ignorant question, but @ 4:58 and there abouts, you draw red wires going INTO the 'out' side of the ECU. I would have expected that the 'out' side would show wires pointing OUTward, figuring that the signals have been corrected, and the 'revised' signalling is then being sent OUT (to the various sensors I guess) to make the necessary adjustments for efficiency. If that's not how it works, well then I guess I sure missed something. I really enjoyed your presentation.
Hello haltech. Currently I am imagining to convert my old 2 stroke engine (Yamaha V80) using the TBI system.I'm curious about this, can the TPS sensor cable be split into two? One to the injector and the other to the oil pump (like the KTM electric oil pump). If you know the answer, I would be very grateful
Hey ! My question is a bit out of way but I'm pursuing mechanical engineering and I want to work in automobile industry. Can you help me out giving some tips on that ? It would be a kind gesture of yours. Thank you
Hi Karan, All we can suggest is that you be active in the auto community in your area. Get to as many events as you can, and meet as many people as you can. :)
Hi can you help me , how do i know if the ecu ore modules are good or not ... Because i made a short on the CANBUS wires 🤦😩 car cranks but dont start sometimes starts fore 1 second... And it has no communications with the OBD . PLEASE HELP 🤕
I have a customer range rover car that crank but wouldn't start. There is no spark, injector pulse and very important no control feed current to the ECU when the ignition key is switched on? What causes no feed current with key ON?
Does the ecu control the AFR, so a tuner can only input a certain AFR while tuning, instead of fine tuning fuel injector timing for a certain manifold pressure and throttle position? For example you just input an AFR of 14.7 at rpm below 3k, and a little rich mixture for higher RPM range, just an example. Thank you so much in advance!
A good place to start are online courses like EFI 101 or HP Academy. Once you've got a basic understanding of EFI and tuning, we run regular training seminars teaching you how to tune with Haltech.
You are doing a great job. Your way of telling is great. I don't understand English at all, but what you are saying I understand a little too much. I am very fond of learning ecm. can you help me...??? How can i learn it ... My native language is Urdu. I'm talking to a source of translate
That's really informative and I want to know one thing,is that possible to made some extra connections on that?.I want to know the full thing about it.
Hello mate great video.. Just a couple of question mate.. Its a great idea if i connect the aftearket tacho to the ECU?and where do i connect in OUTput or input of the ECU..and how can i locate which one of the 2 pin connection is OUT Or IN..i saw on your drawing the right side is in and left side is OUtput..pls help..i want to add tach on my ecosport.pls advice ..thanks
The situatiom im having with my 03 3.5 nissan altima is..i was told if the timing chain is out of time which i guess mine was 64 degrees out of time amd thats why im not getting spark and fuel injection...could this be a factor? This cars ignition is controlled by the ecm..whats ur opinion..i personally figured if the cam and crank is out of time and the cam and crank are both turning u should still get spark right?
Help I just bought this which had its ecu swapped with a new engine the imoblizer is disabling communications with the ecu whats an alternative way off communicating with the ecu
Hi. I remove my catalytic converter to modify my muffler. My question is, does modifying a muffler requires ecu remapping? Any thoughts about this and what are the effects after? By the way im a motorcycle rider. Thank you :)
Yeah I got a car computer that is not pulsating the injectors and I have no communication from the computer with a scan tool is that maybe one of the inputs??
Great. But my question is, is MAP really cruicial to the calculation? My bike has nothing resembling MAP sensor, only IAT, CTS, TPS, O2 sensor and that's about it. Wondering how I could connect programmable ECU to my bike when this sensor is missing. The ECU it has now is hardly programmable, reverse engineering is a way to go, but with rather blurry future.
Hi, thank you for this video. It is very informative. However, one question though. Is the ECU mainly focuses on the FI process and is it standard for all bikes? I am planning to customize the dashboard of my motorcycle (Yamaha NVX 155). I wish to create a custom-made display screen, which I will replace the existing digital dashboard display. I wish to make the new display screen more intelligent and has many more added function such as GPS-direction app. Is doing this does not require alteration or change in the ECU? My goal is to make my dashboard (digital display) a bit smart and does not only dispaly, RPM, Speed, Time, Trip and Odometer as what the original display does. Can you please shed me light on this, I don't wanna mess with the ECU, is it possible to make this project with the said restriction?
ecu monitor sensor signal ,when sensor stop working ecu show a fault code read by scanner, solenoids like fuel injector or oil control valve dont send signals to ecu so how ecu know solenoid stop working to show fault codes related to solenois?
If my cooling fan is not running at all, with or without the A/C on, is there a chance it could be the ECU? I replaced the cooling fan, and it refuses to run at all.
I still didn't get what is the difference between an ECU and an EMS. Show me the parts ? Is it like the difference between an ALU and a CPU ? As, in the CPU does everything the ALU can and more ?
Hi, Have you had any experience in updating the antiquated ECU from a 74 Model Mercedes 450sl/slc with a Haltech unit? This is the electronic version. Its called the Bosch D Jetronic injection. Hope to hear from you soon. Paul
So does this mean the ECU is the same as what we Dutch call a boardcomputer? The thing that handles all the canbus imputs and enige error codes or dashboard light etc?
What's interesting is how the driver fits into the equation. Just because fuel injection and ECUs are better doesn't mean they will always win a race. Wow after so many questions about ECU it's the first time I actually heard about the basics.
Lol me tooooo

Outstanding. You know I was just watching with volume down because my daughter is trying to sleep but what I saw with you drawing was fantastic it would be cool to have you drawing everything I just seen in video lol I learned so much
Glad someone does videos, that don't assume you already know the basics.
7 years later, still a great video

Dear Scott
Basics of ECU very well informed & executed, keep it up👍👍
Very educational I''ve unstood everything you were talking about .,Thank you so much sir
Great explanation and breakdown, Scott. Still a lot of confusion out there about how ECUs and tunes do.

It really helped me to understand the ecu system thank you 🙏
Thank Sir !!!
I have presentation to do tomorrow and this really helped me a lot !!
OMG !!! how much detailed science and technology humanity have reached !!! i can safely say : i know nothing ...... nothing at all !!!!
Am surprised too with this intelligence

thanks dude! I'm definitely gonna be a automotive mechanic and tuner!
Keep your hopes up!
Great explanation I was crazy about how ecu works, then this give me the idea. Thanks guys

Explain an Injector/Ignition Driver circuit!
Yes please do.
I would like to know how i can keep my injectors open longer
Well, explained.
Thank you. I understand the visual of ECU car programming.
Don't forget the Crankshaft Position Sensor (& Camshaft Position Sensor as cars so equipped).
I'm a fan of the whiteboard illustrations
I agree, written explanation with diagram is quite often better than a mere verbal explanation.

This helped me so much
Very good info

Good video. Although, you don't "need" IAT to run an engine, but I'm nit-picking. In the end, the more sensors the better, really.
Ty scott
Thanks for the great info

Does the stock ecu adopt to an after market air filter??
