    Ok, Hot Take (not really one at all but IDC), but brightly colored historical clothes people actually wore are so much cooler than anything fantasy has come up with

    • @myopinionbetter4287
      @myopinionbetter4287 2 роки тому +8

      Cause most fantasy have atleast some grimdark elements to them usually based on the so called "dark ages" where the common man was presumed to have a miserable life while the nobles had good lives but we're disgusting and unhygienic individuals.
      Again you could just based your fantasy faction off a classical faction but even then there will be a certain 'drabness' to the rank and file troops most of the time because these fantasy settings usually have a more adult audience where being a bit dark and bleak and serious is more preferred.
      Like imagine Tolkien with brightly coloured orc uniforms. They may look nice but I imagine alot of the fanbase will get upset because the "great evil" seems cheerfully coloured and have time for aesthetics over pure mass produced grey drone look.

      it would be cool to see bright colours in fantasy, and more historical elements. at the end of the day the general public get their medieval image by watching fantasy anyway so presenting another perspective could be ironically original, compared to most fantasy settings which are "dark and edgy"
      I'm planning a fantasy setting where the armors take inspiration from animals (sea, earth and sky animals) and armor painting is encouraged so you could recognize the characters by their armor or helmet, so no more helmetless main characters. for example moon worshipers usually use black armor whith whitebedges, or whith white stars or night related symbols. the only thing I struggle whith is finding out how all colours are made and which ones are more common. and if a colour is less common in our world, how can I change my world to make it easier to find in nature.
      so yeah, anything that breaks the "edgy grey" asthetic is welcome in my eyes

    The Frankish warrior was my favorite. You can clearly see the Late Roman influence mixed in with the Germanic roots, even down to the term "Paladin" for the King's guards, after "Palatina". I am pretty sure that the scale armor is meant to be similar to the Roman type of scale used in the later legionaries, which wasn't too much less protective than maille, but was lighter and easier to produce, making it more suitable for a declined Roman economy and its Germanic successors.

    • @ConstantineJoseph
      @ConstantineJoseph 2 роки тому +3

      Actually scale armor is not exactly the preferred armor of the Romans by any sense. Known as the Lorica Squamata, they tended to be used from the 3rd century onwards.
      However the bulk of armor used during the late antiquity was the Lorica Hamata or the chainmail hauberk. The reason being was that Lorica Hamata was easier to produce than the segmented and scale armor. Secondly, the Roman military wanted to spend less. Thirdly, the on field maintenance of the Chainmail was far less than plate or scale as those need constant oiling and polishing to prevent rust. Whilst the Chainmail meant that constant motion of moving troops kind of helped with the de rusting process.
      Also the longevity of the chainmail resulted in families passing on the armor from Father to Son and to grandson. The Franks generally used Chainmail to follow the tradition of the late Romans. And as shown above their native throwing axe the francisca was their native weapon although the Spatha was also prevalent in Merovingian armies

      @pavelthefabulous5675 2 роки тому +1

      @@ConstantineJoseph That's interesting! I always figured scale was less labor-intensive, but it probably takes way longer to forge a scale than a ring. Maybe scale was the flashier, more expensive armor back then. But then, why did steppe nomads prefer lamellar over maille?

    • @ConstantineJoseph
      @ConstantineJoseph 2 роки тому +4

      @@pavelthefabulous5675 You pointed out that the eastern armies including the steppe peoples prefer the Lamellar armor which is all down to the structure of their militaries. You can say that the usage of Lamellar stretches from the Byzantines to the Chinese.
      In large central authority run empires or khanates, they could muster all the black smithing resources to fixate on making some really good armor. The Byzantine Lamellar was considered superior to mail armor and was studied by an Australian University.
      For the Nomads, they are after all a society that requires martial fortitude in all of the populace. Therefore, blacksmithing would be a common trade.
      The Romans as well used Lorica Segmentata which was segmented plate armor, a highly superior armor to chainmail during the height of imperium.
      However the usage of Chainmail doesn't mean armor had deteriorated by any sense.
      Due to the rising need to increase troop strength of the empire to defend both East and western empires, the Constantinian reforms ensured a 400,000 strong praesantalis armies in the field, excluding Limitanei border troops.
      Instead of expensive scale armor or segmentata, the Hamata was therefore the main issue. Only the Scola are given the better armor of the scale armor and the Clibinarii, the full scale, cataphract styled armor for men and horse.
      In the end the Chainmail would become the true mainstay for Europe for almost a millennia as with under armor padding, the chainmail is a formidable armor and will provide significant slashing protection against swords. That is why maces and two handed axes were used later on by Normans and vikings to batter through Chainmail but of course at a cost of using such unique weapons.

    Loved the video! One thing I will say though is the Prince of Persia soundtrack is a bit too Arab-sounding (ironically enough) to quite fit when you draw your Persian warriors. Consider using this instead: ua-cam.com/video/98_Zv3jYVjw/v-deo.html

    If he holds the spear like that, he won't be able to stab too far.
