      Yes, but sometimes the alternate adage applies: "Travel light, freeze at night.". It helps to know the terrain/climate of one's travel route. Sub-freezing weather with little or no wood for a fire makes for a very dreary night.

    you can find a plastic 2 qt. gov issue and cover with Alice clips you can clip to the side. Having used Alice when I was in in 80-84 there were also H straps to fix your sleep system on the bottom and your pad would probably tie down tighter if you close your top and bring the slack in your main straps to the top and run your pad thru the loops created by the straps then tighten your 2 main straps. just a suggestion from an old soldier

    Best pack ever conceived. Yes.
    All you ever need.
    Carried all my 782 gear in my car/truck/jeep for decades after I got out of the Corps.
    Now, they call it “survival” gear, bug-out-Bag, or some such.
    But it’s really just your basic necessities.
    Good video.

    The webbing on the sides of an ALICE pack fit some MOLLE pouches by sheer coincidence. The large ALICE can haul more than you want. The Medium is a good three day pack.

      I know all to well how much extra you can carry by adding more pockets on the outside of the pack. It’s nice for gear you need to get to quickly or regularly.

    Camping, bush crafting, survival, bugout, getting home on foot..... There's all kinds of ways and reasons to keep a kitted out ruck handy. In the civilian world its fully up to yourself to figure out what you want in your ruck. You can go for function over form or lean toward comfort of over function it up tp you!
    Just remember ONCES = POUNDS and POUNDS = PAIN. No ones going to carry it for you!

    Im from the UK and just bought a Large Alice Pack (with aluminium frame). I think its the best rucksack purchase I ever made. I dont think it does any one specific thing brilliantly, but it can do everything fairly well. Its just an amazing versatile pack. You can even strip off the pack, store that, and take the frame and straps out to collect firewood. I can understand why it pisses some people off, but as an all-round versatile back pack, you can turn it to any situation. Thanks for the video. Happy Thanks Giving.

    LC-1 and LC-2 are definitely tried and true. I use both for overnight to 5 day rucks. Helikon Tex Matilda is nice too and fairly reasonable for a new aftermarket ALICE. Recently I acquired an ILBE and I dont have anything bad to say about it. Thinking of trying out a medium MOLLE II. The large ruck is ridiculous 😄. For used surplus keep checking on EBAY. Also try looking into the DD frontline hammock. Can be used as a hammock or ground tent. Has a hooped bugnet. Big plus and light. A field cover, some bungee and a DD covers most bases. 👍👍

    I have seen some street medics use those vests as easily accessible med supply storage, the magazine and grenade pouches are great for holding often used items. I have a military style canteen and I bought a canteen pouch that has 2 side pockets for it, it has 2 molle hangers. I can fit my canteen cup and lid in that, hope to get the matching stove since I do not have any kind of portable stove at this time

    I suppose everyone will have their own idea of how to pack a ruck, unless it was issued to you; in which case, you'll pack it the way you're told!!! LOL!!! Back in the day, we called those medium rucks you mention as "baby rucks".......... simply because we never used anything but the large rucks in our units; which are nearly twice the size............which means, unfortunately, you carry twice the weight. LOL!!! When you're doing it, it sucks like nobody's business; but now that we're considered old men, I guess it's a good laugh to reminisce. Either one, which ever you use though, will be a reliable piece of gear. There was nothing high-tech about them; just basic, strong & durable, and lightweight when it was empty. My last eight or so years, the army was pushing hard for a replacement, trying the hi-tech route, and we were forced to use all the crazy ideas from folks that never had to carry it full of gear; but absolutely nothing was worth a damn compared to the ALICE pack, which I could carry over 120 lbs worth of equipment in (when I was young). Couldn't tell ya what the boys are carrying now, or if the stuff is any good, but I do know the stuff is godawful expensive. I retired just before the GWOT started, so I no longer get gear for free. Save a heap of cash and get yourself one of these if you can find them, either the smaller one here, or the large, and make sure you have the frame. I still have my two large ALICE packs I was issued, both are over twenty years old now, and still holding up with no deficiencies. Us old guys can't do much anymore, but our words are still pretty strong. I'm sixty-three, and I haven't found a pack that can do the job for less than 50 bucks yet. I love the Alice pack! I have the large one I have had since I was like 8. Now I have a medium one that I have a mmss carrier underneath the pack on the frame. Also I took the molle shoulder straps off a newer style molle pack and replaced the older shoulder straps. The last thing I am going to do is replace the old waist belt with one of the molle ones. Great looking load out!!! I did a video on my pack if you wanted to check it out. The pack rides like a dream now!

      The Dog House Outdoors like I said this is my go to pack, I love it. I'll have to look into the new shoulder straps. I personally don't ever use the waistband, it's on there if I need it, but with my military background I've always had other gear on my waist so I couldn't use it. Now it's just habit that I don't. There are a few thing I'd like to add but I'm set up pretty well for just about any trip I want to take. I'll check out your video, thanks for the heads up on it.

    Nice job on the video brother I like how you are very descriptive of all of your gear and of this pack itself. I am planning on buying one of these packs in the future. My question for you is what are your thoughts of using a heavy contractor grade garbage bag as a waterproof pack liner have you ever tried this? All of the military waterproof bags I ever find are just no good, and a trash bag if ruined could just be used for that and cheaply replaced. Also what about tying it or using the pack for flotation in an emergency.

    • @OTROutdoors
      @OTROutdoors  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. Yes I have used the heavy duty bags to water proof gear and it is a great low cost way to keep your gear dry. I have a few medium to high end dry bags that I use instead, simply because of durability, they do cost you some money up front but they last a long time and can be used as just a bag. Both are good options. Both the trash bag and the dry bag option can be sealed or tried off and placed inside the bag and then used as an emergency floatation device. Even used simple to get you and your gear across a body of water that is not passable any other way but by swimming.

    • @OTROutdoors
      @OTROutdoors  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching the video. The large Alice pack can be used for a week long trip, if you pack correctly. By putting your sleep system on the bottom of the bag and add a pouch or two on the sides you gain a ton of space in the main bucket. If you are looking for a larger pack and want to keep with a military style, you may want to look into the ILBE gen 2 ruck. It’s taller and has more space for adding external pouches, it also has a daypack as part of the pack that can be taken off and used independently.

    If you're going to get through thick bush, leave the small ax, folding saw and bow saw at home. Get yourself a good quality and light machete, easy to sharpen and a sharpening stone. It will replace all of that tools. Forget carrying a chair. Leave that for beer camping with buddies. Use a light hammock, it will do the same and it's much lighter. I grew up in the mountains in Venezuela, and I could say you may don't need so many tools.

    • @OTROutdoors
      @OTROutdoors  4 роки тому +1

    The alice pack you have there is a large, not medium.. medium does not have the 3 pockets on the top center..

      Thank you for taking the time to watch my video. Yes, it is the large, I clearly say that it is a large. I also say that I own a medium and have used a medium. I also discussed the differences between the large and medium Alice pack.

    Your sleep system goes on the out side of your Alice pack. Not the inside. I keep seeing people put their tent and or tarp on the inside when it was originally designed to be placed on the outside. This made room for clothing and ammunition and food. But your load out looks ok. People keep using the pack wrong. Makes me question.

      The medium ALICE is meant to be set up with or without the frame. The large ALICE is meant to be used with frame only. I set my large ALICE up with a DEI 1606 AC (ALICE Compatible) frame. Better than the GI aluminum frame.

    Its Hard to go against the ALICE pack. I have the Medium one and like yourself I may Like you move on to the Large one.
    I have owned different Higher priced bags which have indeed served their purposes and its hard to tell they aren't new as they are in FANTASTIC Shape.
    ( Just use a wet sponge on them and BANG, New car smell ) But I have seen some Alice Packs over 40 years old and Have seen combat that can say the same.
    Like you I am a Tarp rather than a tent person as it just gives you more options, I also have seen many go the way of the Poncho and never have problems or regrets. I do carry a North Face Wasatch 40°F bag that with a few small additions can take my to Well Below 0°F. You sound Like you have a Lot of What I like to call " Head Equipment " and it will serve you well.
    I'm not sure if you mentioned where you live and if For nothing more than OPSEC sake I understand. I myself Live in the Appalachian Mountains area so Knowing not only the terrain but other things that can kill you other than Mistakes or Accidents or Fate known but to God, Other Than Humans The Biggest Wildlife threat would be the Black Bear but to be
    Honest if you spend anytime in the woods more than likely you have been less that 5 to 10 feet away from a Black Bear and Never Noticed.
    The reason is because He or She were on their knees praying " Dear God, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE Let this 2 legged thing not see me and keep on walking, I've tried to be a good Bear and I won't even snatch a picnic basket again if you get me out of this one AMEN."
    I was just wondering ( As I too will be carrying a 10/22 and a Ruger Mark IV ) Will You be carrying another type of Handgun that Can protect you against the 2 and 4 legged Predators ?
    I will only carry one of 3
    1) .357 Magnum
    2) .45 ACP or
    3) 10mm all with FMJ Deep Penetrating rounds.
    Again, Great Video and I have Subscribed to your Channel and Please forgive me for being Long winded. Sounds like you may be a Veteran ?.If so Thank you for your Service, God Bless you and Your Family with Long Life, Health, and Prosperity.

    If you need need more weight why not add a file for re-profiling your axe blade just in case its needed. I bought a file when I bought the sharpening puck. It just seemed like a really great idea...
    Its a good video you put together for a lot though. I'm looking at buying a Large ALICE myself as well to replace my Large ACU ruck.

      Yeah I'm looking on eBay. I'm always looking for the best deal. I bought the Large Molle 2 ACU ruck and really hate it. Too much weight even just empty. In my days of the Army Molle wasn't even heard of I don't think. That was nearly 20 yrs ago. Lol. But I do want the Large ALICE. I did buy the MMSS for $85 (+$32 shipping). It had only been used once the guy said. He had bought 5 for him and his family. It is practically Brand New. Apparently God truly blessed me with a really good system. It was the woodland Bivy. I looked for a deal I couldn't refuse for months. And it was $95 but the guy couldn't find the compression bag so he knocked off $10 and then it got here and I pulled out the Bivy and there was the compression bag and I offered to send the $10 back and he said no need. He said he looked EVERYWHERE but in the box... Lol

      @@OTROutdoors yeah I figured the MMSS would be a great addition to a BOB. I have my mother and daughter packs ready as well just to get the Hell outof dodge just in case Russia does hit us with EMP and I have a couple Walkies, headlamps, and extra solar radios stored in a Faraday Cage as well. Can never have too much equipment when it comes to survival and a crap load stored for first aid, antibiotics, and natural pain reliever from like processed wild lettuce...

    All the people who show videos on packs and gear make the same mistakes. They do not include their sheath knives, pocket knives, compass in your shirt pocket, matches in your pockets. These items and more do not go into the pack weight. They do not include water weight, usually go light on food weight. TP is often left out, more a bulk issue no a weight issue. No extra glasses if you wear glasses, no medication. Weight is weight whether it is in your pocket, on your belt you get to carry it. .

    • @OTROutdoors

      Richard Provost that can be true, but it can also help people who are new to the outdoors and need a starting point or want some new ideas of what they can care. For me personally, I just like sharing what I use in hopes that it will inspire and help other people to learn and get outside and spend time in the woods too.
