i like both, both feel different and both can be configured to suit an individual. the Filbe, as a standard ruck, is very nice, but a more compact ruck like the malice is also a very good option, what, are you gonna say a shot angled foregrip is a waste of money on a rifle because we have standard long grips issued? and what else is he "supposed" to spend his disposable income on, spend it on what you want, if you want to invest in your job, do so. stop being a pedantic ass.

I'm very pleased to have run across this channel. I am a technical squid (Electronics Tech) that has been out and retired from the sea now for a few years but something has been bothering me of late. Something doesn't seem right in this world and I have that nagging feeling that it would behoove me to understand a little bit better... All I did was direct their equipment upkeep for a time but MY GOD... the warehouse FULL of equipment like you are describing here and PILES Of additional, specialized kit just for that unit was INSANE to witness! I SO wish I had paid more attention to what all was used but it was a full time job just keeping those INSANELY expensive crypto comms bricks (MBITRs and some other much more specialized version of) they used functioning. I've never seen such super expensive items treated SO poorly and come back to us in such horrific condition... encrusted with salt residue and all manners of abuse that was a pain in the ass to keep operable. Yeah, the boys there are very hard on gear. I've seen commercial DUMPSTERS full of gear half used, barely used, in tatters and even BRAND NEW just thrown away due to either outdated or new inventory was coming in. Brand new KYDEX holsters still in the wrap... thrown away! CAMELBAK H.A.W.G hydration day packs, still with tags on them... shytcanned! Talk about fraud, waste and abuse. It was maddening!
Wow, I didn't realize how versatile the medium minimalice concept was till you pulled the PC out. That was a surprise. Definitely going to look at modding mine now.
Man, the insoles idea is *amazing*. So little size/weight relative to value. Even if you just considered it buddy-gear from a civilian preparedness perspective. You never know how well outfitted the people around you might be. Having the capacity to address a comrade’s poor footwear choices is amazing. They can always be cut down too, if you have big feet.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. This isn't very different in either load or layout from what I carried as a combat engineer thirty years ago. Some of the gear is better and/or lighter and you definitely have a better choice of pouches these days, but that pack and load out would have been right at home on our missions.
@@TheGruntPerspective as a 68W equivalent in the Army I serve. I’ve never found a field pack that can fit all my medical gear and my basic field gear. I was lucky enough and did my rifleman’s cse as a Corporal medic and had a ball. I was that guy that was constantly smiling. But I had a great section (squad). Again some good points. Just one thing. It may have been in another video but do you have a repair kit for gear and clothing?? I also keep one of the smaller jetboil systems. Our ration packs come as a 24hr (not single meals) and we don’t have the flamless ration heaters.
Cool pack, I always wanted to get an alice frame for my main pack but I’ll say my new issue was never an issue and was low key comfy however I seen them break all the fucking time within the platoon, mortars did a lot of walking. Anyways cool vid gives me ideas for my Alice pack I just bought out in the civ div
Have you considered sewing a mesh into the top flap, like on the MOLLE 2 Rucksack? I find it extremely useful for various admin bullshit, particularly small things, like a single change of socks, a map/admin pouch, extra mags, etc. Would make this ruck even better in my opinion.
I actually did something similar with a bandoleer and some velcro by strapping it on the top flap it enables me to carry extra ammo, a field dressing and some extra stuff that i may need in a hurry
I would highly recommend taking a look at beez combat systems and their le Grid chest rig. I’ve been running it about 4 years now. It has pull forward straps that make it easy and instant to get a Perfect fit over armor or without armor. Great video as always man. Your channel has been so refreshing.
Great concept, i like the way you priorityze the availability of fresh water; Except for the plate carrier i almost have the same stuff in my civilian pack but it already is around 60 lbs... won't go far...
I'd go out with 3. Issued main pack, day pack and the old eagle industries map. The Map was more like a personal preference, used of for raids and mount instead of the day pack. Depending on the op or mission.
I agree especially being an 0331 in the battalion landing teams. Now my brother is Army at Bragg and he says he carries an Eagle Yote, the ISSUED assault pack, and MOLLE 2 ruck or the Spears Ruck. The Spears Ruck weren't to good when hitting the beach head they take in to much water, good to go? He's trying to get into the special forces but he's airborne now. I don't see how them boys do it, I'm a Lava Dawgs all the way good to go?
Now that I'm a DM in the Platoon I'm not humping quite as much....maybe 130-140 rounds with the Smaw-Ds, clay ores and 4-6 mortar rounds in the ruck. Cause we're dropped by then off to the 41s when their setting up mortars. The biggest difference is I get ambushed less gold to go?
You could fit a large radio in the pack if I took the plate carrier out, with it inside I don’t think so. If you could there wouldn’t be room for anything else
In 3/3 Marines we carried 14 sandbags and i usually went in on tripod, T&E free gun mode. That always worked the best and Gunny never got on to us if we needed to set up the casualty collection point. We are geu ts this is what we do

@@KeterMalkuth the main problem with it is the frame, it tends to break. Even if you replace it with another frame, the bag itself doesn’t hold together well. Buckles constantly tear off, and the bag starts to tear where it attaches to the frame.
@@TheGruntPerspectiveAh, I understand, thanks for the insight. I'd heard the FILBE was designed by Mystery Ranch and manufactured by. . . Someone, can't remember who, so couldn't see how it'd be a bad pack. Clearly, it wasn't manufactured close to MR quality.
@@KeterMalkuthFILBE did have input from MR and is produced by the usual suspects, Eagle, Propper, etc.. Marines are hard on their gear, and for the average civvy, getting a non-CIF turn-in FILBE can be a challenge. The FILBE's main issue is it's a gigantic nylon trash bag so most people end up over-packing it. Honestly the newer frames (1606 MC) generally fine for most people, don't throw your pack off the back of trucks and don't load it up with 200lbs and it won't likely crack. I've got a Tactical Tailor V3 on one of those plastic frames and I've been very happy with it.
Good breakdown my dude. The addition of the assault pack also makes for a good E&E bag, God forbid you ever needed to use it that way. Some of these old heads don't realize just how much shit the modern Marine and Soldier has to carry nowadays.
So about those 2 qt canteens, I notice they introduce a bit of a funky plasticy flavor sometimes to the water Is there any way to mitigate that? Is there something I'm doing wrong with them, or is it maybe something that has to do with the brand I got? Or is that just kinda how they are?
How did you get the pouches on the outside of the medium Alice??? I've done all the fastex buckles and Ive even put it on a filbe frame (yes it works great) but I need to know how you fastened those MOLLE pouches on the outside of an a.l.i.c.e pack. Which has no MOLLE webbing.
I just put the malice clips that come with those pouches through the alice webbing, it’s not as tight as molle but you don’t notice it with the pack on
Plus whool socks don't get stinky as quick. It's kinda Insane. I've legit worn a wool base layer top for 7 days straight and it didn't stink. Try that with synthetic and it's gonna smell like a football locker room. Question. I do the same water method as u. As far as purifying what are some other options? I know boiling and tabs. Do u know of a filter that also purifies?
I know there are filters out there that purify, or at least claim to. But personally I’m always going to combine with tablets. They are too easy to use, light, small, and give me the peace of mind that I want.
Great video! I saw your videos on your plate carrier setups, so I was confused when you pulled out the slick PC. If you're humping that slick PC, where is your fully kitted out PC? I'm just trying to wrap my head around the use case of having a fully kitted out PC and a slick PC as well for conventional infantry work.
The USMC gen 3 pc is like the Russian nesting doll of plate carriers. That slick one I pulled out goes INSIDE of the one you see in my other videos. What I do is wear my chest rig ( which can be found on my channel) for the majority of the time. Then when contact becomes likely, the patrol stops, and dons armor from the pack. Putting the slick body armor on, and the chest rig drapes over the armor. This has been my go too when I have to carry my armor, but not necessarily wear it the whole time. An example of this would be something like a multiple day movement to contact to assault some sort of objective. During the movement the armor is less of a priority because contact is less likely, so it goes in my pack. During the assault is when I would want to wear it, so it comes out and I put it on. The setups you see in my other videos are showcasing my plate carrier configured to be worn the whole time as my primary kit! I hope that explains it, thanks for watching!
I kinda talk about it in my alice pack mods video , but in short, the plastic frames break. If you took 10 marines packs and lined them up, at least 5 of their frames would be cracked or broken clean through. The alice pack is perfect example of something that wasn’t broke being “fixed” in my opinion.
Thats actually a pretty light weight ruck hes got there. We were making surplus runs all night up to Schofield. Them Army Boys were trading us everuthing they could to include the london bridge stuff. I really liked the Large Molle 2 mainly because Its the unsung hero of beach landings. Our ILBE and FILBE rucks varely had drainage. Now the Molle is different and our gunny helped us paint everything When i became the DM and started carrinf the sass i rarried under 138-150 pounds. Its hell in the landing teams but we get it done good to go?
Any thoughts on the ILBE? I have the recon version that's bigger than the standard. The assault pack part fits all my gear for a 3 day hike better. I have some of the Corpsman dividers for it too.

I have a recon ILBE too and It's huge, 95L vs 85L on the standard ILBE. I would say the only real pitfall is that if you aren't carrying the maximum amount of volume it fits the weight will sink to the bottom right behind your ass. Pack the light stuff on the bottom and heavier stuff near the top. It's a good pack but somewhat collectible so I rarely use it
Do you ever consider allied methods of patrol order/marching order? Just want your thoughts on the british method using a bergen and daysack/assault pack prepacked inside?
Realistically - if you were using an IOTV or IBA type of full-coverage body armor, and you were using the groin/lower back protectors - do you think you would still be able to fit it slick into the ruck?
@@TheGruntPerspective Modern warfare requires you to take off your armor only in the dugout. The green zone exists only many kilometers from the line of contact. and it's important: shatterproof protection is even more important than plates
@@TheGruntPerspectivesort of an update to my question, I found an answer. I started using the dick and ass flaps from the IOTV with my body armor, and when your armor is packed into your ruck it actually basically adds 0 volume, it's not even a consideration. The flaps themselves are maybe 2-3mm thick, and they will fold up against a slick vest or plate carrier perfectly fine. There are many reasons why people choose not to use dick and ass flaps, but the ability to pack your stuff into your ruck isn't a good reason to forgo the shrapnel protection.
Have you done a video on your helmet setup? I assume it's pretty high speed, and as a National Guardsman I see a lot of dudes running around with a totally slick ACH because they don't know how to set it up.
What would your colder weather load out look like? Just curious what Marines are doing now. I was in 2/8 2006-2010. Don’t worry about what these Fudds are saying you are putting out some pretty good content.

Sounds like they are way more lenient on what they let y’all bring? I think that’s great I remember packing for the field and having a crazy amount of stuff.
What is the mission you are packed for? Do they issue you out all the MREs prior to leaving for the field? Kind of curious what the considerations are. Personally I have yet to live the light world. Deployments were out of a fob so that didn’t count too

Are you sure it's a medium alice? Not a large? I've never ever seen a plate carrier fit in a medium but I loaded mine up in my Large in the field multiple times and it was tight
Thing is in the Lava dogs, regardless of the weather, terrain or time, we marched Good to Go? Packing for the patrol is an art passed down from Marine to Marine, Generation to Generation. We started our patrols when it was time, not if the weather .permited. We took our security seriously in the Lava Dawgs. Now......When i tried to originaly enlist into the 0351s it might have been different, but i doubt It. I dont talk so smart sounding but im a darn good Marine. Good to Go?
With having the assault pack inside of the ruck, what are your thoughts on the MOLLE 2 rucksack considering you can attach the assault pack to the outside of it? I have the large Alice pack with the upgraded MOLLE shoulder straps and waist belt but also have the MOLLE 2 rucksack I just need the matching assault pack.

It’s definitely unit specific on what packs they allow you to use. And I haven’t thought about making a FILBE video. Maybe one day I will for guys who have to use it
@ I was in the reserve and I swapped my plastic fible frame for a metal Alice frame, best decision I made when I was in. I live in Wi and I swear every other guy had a cracked plastic frame. Damn things were so fucking ass, couldn’t withstand the cold weather.
@ if I could change one thing about issued equipment it would be the FILBE pack. The bag its self falls apart, the frame is awful, the shoulders and hip belt are fine I guess. Over all it’s bad. And it doesn’t help that by the time you get yours its already been used by 5 guys
What entrenching tool are you using? I keep finding very old ones that are heavy, or new cheap Chinese made stuff. Would like a quality tool if possible. Thanks.
@@KitCheck101 it works great with body armor. But the belt on the pack is designed to be worn around you body’s belt line. So if I wearing a belt with this pack I have to strap it to the top when marching

@@KitCheck101 external frames are generally better designed to be worn with armor on. Such as the standard issue FILBE frame, Alice, malice, and other frames. They are also much more durable and rigid. As far as the blanket, it’s just a section of a fish net with jute tied on it
We each got croch rot in Okinawa a few times a piece. The Hookers ar beautiful but they do have those STIs. Im still not completely healed. We did them Glory Holes but had to double time it back to the ship. Longest tools them girls ever saw. Mine and PFC Pengle. Problem was we infected Pengles wife and sister in law on liberty. Is that bad?
I’m not sure what other people think about this, but I’ve always thought a field pack was your main pack basically, carry’s all of your gear. A patrol pack is a smaller pack that is stowed in your field pack and taken out to carry essential gear on patrol away from your patrol base.
Sounds like False Honor to me. Either you barely qualified to be a marine or you're Not in the armed forces. At least be honest about it because false honor is a felony. You Can Not intelligently stretch your water use by not drinking. Your body and mind would shutdown effectively within 18-24 hours. Why aren't you using a U.S. Marine Corps Issue pack, ILBE variant? Only smart thing I've seen you do is carry that amount of water.

@@TheGruntPerspective If you ever have to drop your pack to carry out an assault and you cannot get back to your pack, you effectively have no water. Our loadout was 2 1qt canteens on our LBE and any extra in/on the pack. You always had water on you then.

@@trentsteel4421 yes I do! It’s in the field craft kit! And those MRE’s aren’t 24 hour rations they are like 1-2 MRE’s per day for me at least

Cool pack, I always wanted to get an alice frame for my main pack but I’ll say my new issue was never an issue and was low key comfy however I seen them break all the fucking time within the platoon, mortars did a lot of walking. Anyways cool vid gives me ideas for my Alice pack I just bought out in the civ div

Have you considered sewing a mesh into the top flap, like on the MOLLE 2 Rucksack? I find it extremely useful for various admin bullshit, particularly small things, like a single change of socks, a map/admin pouch, extra mags, etc. Would make this ruck even better in my opinion.

I actually did something similar with a bandoleer and some velcro by strapping it on the top flap it enables me to carry extra ammo, a field dressing and some extra stuff that i may need in a hurry

I would highly recommend taking a look at beez combat systems and their le Grid chest rig. I’ve been running it about 4 years now. It has pull forward straps that make it easy and instant to get a Perfect fit over armor or without armor.

I'd go out with 3. Issued main pack, day pack and the old eagle industries map. The Map was more like a personal preference, used of for raids and mount instead of the day pack. Depending on the op or mission.
I agree especially being an 0331 in the battalion landing teams. Now my brother is Army at Bragg and he says he carries an Eagle Yote, the ISSUED assault pack, and MOLLE 2 ruck or the Spears Ruck. The Spears Ruck weren't to good when hitting the beach head they take in to much water, good to go? He's trying to get into the special forces but he's airborne now. I don't see how them boys do it, I'm a Lava Dawgs all the way good to go?
Now that I'm a DM in the Platoon I'm not humping quite as much....maybe 130-140 rounds with the Smaw-Ds, clay ores and 4-6 mortar rounds in the ruck. Cause we're dropped by then off to the 41s when their setting up mortars. The biggest difference is I get ambushed less gold to go?

In 3/3 Marines we carried 14 sandbags and i usually went in on tripod, T&E free gun mode. That always worked the best and Gunny never got on to us if we needed to set up the casualty collection point. We are geu ts this is what we do

@@KeterMalkuth the main problem with it is the frame, it tends to break. Even if you replace it with another frame, the bag itself doesn’t hold together well. Buckles constantly tear off, and the bag starts to tear where it attaches to the frame.
@@TheGruntPerspectiveAh, I understand, thanks for the insight. I'd heard the FILBE was designed by Mystery Ranch and manufactured by. . . Someone, can't remember who, so couldn't see how it'd be a bad pack. Clearly, it wasn't manufactured close to MR quality.
@@KeterMalkuthFILBE did have input from MR and is produced by the usual suspects, Eagle, Propper, etc.. Marines are hard on their gear, and for the average civvy, getting a non-CIF turn-in FILBE can be a challenge. The FILBE's main issue is it's a gigantic nylon trash bag so most people end up over-packing it. Honestly the newer frames (1606 MC) generally fine for most people, don't throw your pack off the back of trucks and don't load it up with 200lbs and it won't likely crack. I've got a Tactical Tailor V3 on one of those plastic frames and I've been very happy with it.
Good breakdown my dude. The addition of the assault pack also makes for a good E&E bag, God forbid you ever needed to use it that way. Some of these old heads don't realize just how much shit the modern Marine and Soldier has to carry nowadays.

How did you get the pouches on the outside of the medium Alice??? I've done all the fastex buckles and Ive even put it on a filbe frame (yes it works great) but I need to know how you fastened those MOLLE pouches on the outside of an a.l.i.c.e pack. Which has no MOLLE webbing.
I just put the malice clips that come with those pouches through the alice webbing, it’s not as tight as molle but you don’t notice it with the pack on
Plus whool socks don't get stinky as quick. It's kinda Insane. I've legit worn a wool base layer top for 7 days straight and it didn't stink. Try that with synthetic and it's gonna smell like a football locker room. Question. I do the same water method as u. As far as purifying what are some other options? I know boiling and tabs. Do u know of a filter that also purifies?
I know there are filters out there that purify, or at least claim to. But personally I’m always going to combine with tablets. They are too easy to use, light, small, and give me the peace of mind that I want.

Great video! I saw your videos on your plate carrier setups, so I was confused when you pulled out the slick PC. If you're humping that slick PC, where is your fully kitted out PC? I'm just trying to wrap my head around the use case of having a fully kitted out PC and a slick PC as well for conventional infantry work.
The USMC gen 3 pc is like the Russian nesting doll of plate carriers. That slick one I pulled out goes INSIDE of the one you see in my other videos. What I do is wear my chest rig ( which can be found on my channel) for the majority of the time. Then when contact becomes likely, the patrol stops, and dons armor from the pack. Putting the slick body armor on, and the chest rig drapes over the armor. This has been my go too when I have to carry my armor, but not necessarily wear it the whole time. An example of this would be something like a multiple day movement to contact to assault some sort of objective. During the movement the armor is less of a priority because contact is less likely, so it goes in my pack. During the assault is when I would want to wear it, so it comes out and I put it on.
The setups you see in my other videos are showcasing my plate carrier configured to be worn the whole time as my primary kit!

Why not one of the newer pack designs with the plastic frame?
I kinda talk about it in my alice pack mods video , but in short, the plastic frames break. If you took 10 marines packs and lined them up, at least 5 of their frames would be cracked or broken clean through. The alice pack is perfect example of something that wasn’t broke being “fixed” in my opinion.

Thats actually a pretty light weight ruck hes got there. We were making surplus runs all night up to Schofield. Them Army Boys were trading us everuthing they could to include the london bridge stuff. I really liked the Large Molle 2 mainly because Its the unsung hero of beach landings. Our ILBE and FILBE rucks varely had drainage. Now the Molle is different and our gunny helped us paint everything When i became the DM and started carrinf the sass i rarried under 138-150 pounds. Its hell in the landing teams but we get it done good to go?
Any thoughts on the ILBE? I have the recon version that's bigger than the standard. The assault pack part fits all my gear for a 3 day hike better. I have some of the Corpsman dividers for it too.

You are right, GP. The ILBE was great for movements to contact/recon patrols, wasn't great while wearing flak and kevlar.
I have a recon ILBE too and It's huge, 95L vs 85L on the standard ILBE. I would say the only real pitfall is that if you aren't carrying the maximum amount of volume it fits the weight will sink to the bottom right behind your ass. Pack the light stuff on the bottom and heavier stuff near the top. It's a good pack but somewhat collectible so I rarely use it

Realistically - if you were using an IOTV or IBA type of full-coverage body armor, and you were using the groin/lower back protectors - do you think you would still be able to fit it slick into the ruck?
With the vests yes, but not the lower back protection and groin
@@TheGruntPerspective Modern warfare requires you to take off your armor only in the dugout. The green zone exists only many kilometers from the line of contact. and it's important: shatterproof protection is even more important than plates
@@TheGruntPerspectivesort of an update to my question, I found an answer. I started using the dick and ass flaps from the IOTV with my body armor, and when your armor is packed into your ruck it actually basically adds 0 volume, it's not even a consideration. The flaps themselves are maybe 2-3mm thick, and they will fold up against a slick vest or plate carrier perfectly fine. There are many reasons why people choose not to use dick and ass flaps, but the ability to pack your stuff into your ruck isn't a good reason to forgo the shrapnel protection.

They are either on my chest rig or my shooter belt. If I’m using a the belt I just tuck it under the flap
Have you done a video on your helmet setup? I assume it's pretty high speed, and as a National Guardsman I see a lot of dudes running around with a totally slick ACH because they don't know how to set it up.
I have not but it’s very under-whelming, just an ACH with team Wendy pads and suspension system, and some camouflage netting to break up the outline.

Are you sure it's a medium alice? Not a large? I've never ever seen a plate carrier fit in a medium but I loaded mine up in my Large in the field multiple times and it was tight

Thing is in the Lava dogs, regardless of the weather, terrain or time, we marched Good to Go? Packing for the patrol is an art passed down from Marine to Marine, Generation to Generation. We started our patrols when it was time, not if the weather .permited. We took our security seriously in the Lava Dawgs. Now......When i tried to originaly enlist into the 0351s it might have been different, but i doubt It. I dont talk so smart sounding but im a darn good Marine. Good to Go?

With having the assault pack inside of the ruck, what are your thoughts on the MOLLE 2 rucksack considering you can attach the assault pack to the outside of it? I have the large Alice pack with the upgraded MOLLE shoulder straps and waist belt but also have the MOLLE 2 rucksack I just need the matching assault pack.
I try to not attach assault packs to my ruck. Just a personal preference thing though

It’s definitely unit specific on what packs they allow you to use. And I haven’t thought about making a FILBE video. Maybe one day I will for guys who have to use it

@ I was in the reserve and I swapped my plastic fible frame for a metal Alice frame, best decision I made when I was in. I live in Wi and I swear every other guy had a cracked plastic frame. Damn things were so fucking ass, couldn’t withstand the cold weather.
@ if I could change one thing about issued equipment it would be the FILBE pack. The bag its self falls apart, the frame is awful, the shoulders and hip belt are fine I guess. Over all it’s bad. And it doesn’t help that by the time you get yours its already been used by 5 guys

hi mate, do you find this works well with belt kit and body armour on at the same time?
@@KitCheck101 it works great with body armor. But the belt on the pack is designed to be worn around you body’s belt line. So if I wearing a belt with this pack I have to strap it to the top when marching

@@KitCheck101 external frames are generally better designed to be worn with armor on. Such as the standard issue FILBE frame, Alice, malice, and other frames. They are also much more durable and rigid.
As far as the blanket, it’s just a section of a fish net with jute tied on it

We each got croch rot in Okinawa a few times a piece. The Hookers ar beautiful but they do have those STIs. Im still not completely healed. We did them Glory Holes but had to double time it back to the ship. Longest tools them girls ever saw. Mine and PFC Pengle. Problem was we infected Pengles wife and sister in law on liberty. Is that bad?

What's the difference between the philosophy of a field pack vs a patrol pack?
I’m not sure what other people think about this, but I’ve always thought a field pack was your main pack basically, carry’s all of your gear. A patrol pack is a smaller pack that is stowed in your field pack and taken out to carry essential gear on patrol away from your patrol base.

Sounds like False Honor to me. Either you barely qualified to be a marine or you're Not in the armed forces. At least be honest about it because false honor is a felony. You Can Not intelligently stretch your water use by not drinking. Your body and mind would shutdown effectively within 18-24 hours. Why aren't you using a U.S. Marine Corps Issue pack, ILBE variant? Only smart thing I've seen you do is carry that amount of water.

@@TheGruntPerspective If you ever have to drop your pack to carry out an assault and you cannot get back to your pack, you effectively have no water. Our loadout was 2 1qt canteens on our LBE and any extra in/on the pack. You always had water on you then.
