Gingerbread brings a comprehensive NFC reader/writer API, and some modest but surprisingly powerful P2P support. Come hear why you should care about NFC technology, what kinds of applications are possible right now, and best practices for deployment.
@SnoweyMan111 No, sorry - "Googlers" is a term typically used to refer to those who work at Google, not users of Google products (which is basically everyone on the internet in some sense)
"Why NFC?" starts 5:00.
Nice work with this extensive technical demo of NFC on Android. I'm looking forward to a proliferation of devices supporting this technology.
LINUX (on PC) and UNIX (on Mac) are "sister" programming languages with superb security already built in. Android is a LINUX based operating system. iOS (iPhone OS) is a UNIX based operating system.

7 years has been passed after you guys said that NFC emulation might be added in AVD(Android Virtual Device)/emulators, and you guys are working on it, but until now, Google never implemented support for NFC in the AVD.
Q&A was quite good.
"What can you tell us about other devices in the near future that support NFC other than Nexus S" Answer: OEMs 44:26
~"What are the missing pieces to offer a compelling proposition for NFC payments"
Answer: Industry needs to move to NDEF / P2P 46:45
~"Is google going to partner with anyone to bring nfc payments mobile" 49:46
Answer: "For mobile payments, nothing to announce."
This could be awesome for keeping track of hardware in a server room or office environment. Perfect for phones.
to be honest, these functionalities have been available since 2007-2008. The problem is finding a standardization and improving adoption, since so far apart from the Nexus S there are maybe a couple of Nokia phones with NFC support.
@wrathallll NFC don't need to work non-stop or distribute card data all the time, this can be easily secured make user turn on the app and hold something to transmit data.
Actully Darwin kernel that powers both OS X and iOS is fork of FreeBSD, which is kernel that only acts like Unix... which in matter of fact Linux is also kernel that acts like Unix. Also they are not programing langueges,there are just core of the system, in fact as they are Unix-like kernels they can exact same tools. Also fun fact, Android can run normal Linux applications (but only in console level,since android don't use X11), Android is actully custom Java environment running on Linux(cont)
@Joshloft chromium os is basicly a browser. I don't think a browser can pull off what an OS can do
@ShadowriverUB hmmm, maybe so.... but there will definitely some security issues. EVERYTHING that involves money, crime follows, everything that utilises technology....gets hacked..EVERYTHING
@BigLejf I'd guess more than 50% of Googlers user Mac, and most run OS X on them as well. This goes for the majority of west coast tech companies I think (though I haven't visited enough to really know).
It's only a matter of time until some advertising company decides it's a good idea to use high-power NFC transmitters and spam Ad URLs to everyone who walks by a booth or store.
There was an incident similar to this except it was spam over bluetooth.
*Cough* = "Ow!"
On a serious note, this was really interesting, thanks for posting!
Where can we get NFC tags?
Didn't WebOS show this feature back in February?
(cont)bah, Ubuntu devs actully made made Unity running on exact same kernel that runs Android in same time. Simplicity of Ubuntu might make people think it's seperate system, everything that uses Linux will run any Linux application if you provide required envriament (GNU, x11 etc.), Linux is actual platfrom, Android is virtual platfrom running on top of it ;] Same thing with iOS and OS X, Since it running on same kernel it can run same software, but require recompiling to ARM, look on JB scene
Also what happens if you hug somebody and your phone touches?
Plenty of people at Google use Macs. I actually can't think of a single Google presentation I've seen that hasn't used a Mac to display the slides.
@erzzzz not really. apple laptops != ipad or iphone
look like a great tech :) hopefully Apple and other popular manufactures will jump in to it too
Do somebody knows if it is possible to block any attempt to write on an NFC tag?
Hi can we put this technology on my galaxy note
Como puedo usar esta tecnologia nfc entre un galaxi note 2 y un galaxii s3
ironically, the functionality that is available now in the API is less than this. You can only PUSH one message from one phone to the other. The transfer is one-way only!
That cough at 24:43 scared the sh%t out of me... woah!!!
Go to nfc.android.com as in 43:29 if you want to learn about the documentation, sample code, and sample application for writing NFC tag
Wow...it's a shame that Google never have the presentation abilities of Apple. It would just make everything seem so much better.
it is supported i use it well im on custom rom never checked it it worked stock
@haresh2094
Sure some cool features but im not worried about Apple and i dont think you should be either
pretty cool imagine seeing like hundreds of tags anywhere you go
@mykothopea Oh, didn't know that. The grammar confused me "50% of googlers user mac".. yeah.
But I think most tend to take Mac's for slideshows, as it's supposedly simple. But I have no experience with mac in a talk really. Don't know why. But I doubt they use them normally.
were do we get NFC sticker!!!
10 years have passed already )
@mykothopea 50% of all google users use Mac? Is that what you're saying. Because Mac doesn't have that kind of market share yet. It's pretty much impossible, unless you're counting number of searches and Mac users google alot, though I don't think there's a big difference there. Your guess seems unlikely.
There probably are very good uses of this but all i can think of is the trolling potential
They lost the slides at the beginning because they are using a Mac.
Are these features out yet?
Has don't work on UA-cam
is that a MBP? What about chromium os?
I tried so hard to get into this session!
@erzzzz whats so interesting about that?
@4pattygalata4 what? in the address bar? what does this do?
Developers know quality hardware when they see it.
Is NFC water proof?
in what Frq works?
Jeff's a robot, 'sticker...on...shoulder, Jeff don't like"
theres nothign wrong about customs roms if you trying to make them sound bad? just a way to debloat all those carriers apps or run jelly bean and such
where is the link to the code as mentioned in the video ?
nfc.android.com/StickyNotes.zip
@xBuzz996 Google use WIndows would be better how?
google using apple computers?
@nahsirah i imagine a group of little kids on a trip and the teacher scans every children with her phone
@juliandeal93 So? It isn't microsoft.
Chrome book..?
wat office ? is there any contact info
They did exactly what they told indeed but no one is using it unfortunately.
GREAT Concept, But Kind Of Concerns Me...
MACS? why? just why??
Damn he's wearing my robots shirt! D:
@colornine84 lol thought wrong XD mixed google with microsoft XD
@hahftmxpknvuu but there is going to be a way to enable and disable it
@hahftmxpknvuu : privacy concerns at 39:28
watch before, comments after
i give it a year until hackers put some booster on their phones and they can just steal money off you as they walk past you.
@juliandeal93
jup osx and linux they´ve been doing that for ages.
@TheSpeedyos because at least it's Unix based :p
@zilifilm so...?
why are they using MAC's When ITS ALL ABOUT ANDROID? :D
Google encourages their employees to work with Linux or Mac.. Security related..
@BigLejf Apple win? After theese new features Apple need all support they can have :)
@wrathallll and yet we use online banking on trojan fest that windows is :p
@KOLTON545 no it doesnt
Interesting, they are using apple.
@wrathallll fact
cool
Nerds of android planet
Carmen MACKLES
I just wanna say something in higschool we all were all didn't love nerds we always make em da losers but the real thing y'all nerds how control our life in us the popular ones we grow up 2 c the things that amaiz us in technology witch from the nerds we monked
@fortysixfish
they could use ubuntu! or maybe even some punk ass version of linux they made by themselves!? lol...im over reacting ;P
Why aren't these guys on TED?
such fucking possibilties for advertising...this is going to make bank
your comparison between QR codes and NFC is a joke. QR codes are faster but you should install a better qr reader and have a default browser set.
The future is now.
The future is a concept - it doesn't exist. Time is always now.
@KOLTON545 cool story bro
@TheOverheardNerd Id rather have something harder to steal for my house. Iris scan.
maybe he's running Linux on it.
I like the technology but this was an amatuer presentation...
WTF ?! Macbook ?
0:24:43 scared mee
There looking verry nervous :s
@hahftmxpknvuu can you imagine how hard that would be?
@henry10201020 Maybe some people simply takes Android vs iPhone war too much seriously. In reality they really don't mind each other
Ha!! Macbook :D
> #NOKIA IS FIRST WITH #NFC #TECHNOLOGY!
So what! Windows is not a google/android product. So, it really doesn't matter if its apple or windows. And, linux is not cool for i/o! ;)
Apple patended NFC if used as a ticket.
Nokia invented it and Apple patended it what fools
What's up with that apple computer prabably wasn't a good idea to bring his MacBook to his job @ google if he hasn't noticed they're kindof enemies... TRAITOR
@18randomly WOW! OH MY GOD! I WAS LIKE...WOW! OH MY GOD! (just kidding, it's Google.)
andriod is using APPLE !!!!
U mean Apple sheep marketing? ya but then i wouldn't know what the heck the technology is and what i could do with it.. i would just THINK it was better then everything else that's out there and it would lay dormant on my device cuz all the knowledge i got was from a couple words from Apple LOL
@hahftmxpknvuu Yeah and then the government will control our minds. Get real and quit panicking (and learn to spell the word "people"). As the speaker explains in the first 3 minutes of the session, the maximum range is 10cm.
