Thanks to Xavier and Tor for demonstrating this. It is a very fact intensive topic and the developer will have to put down some effort grasping things. But the video format is great for replaying stuff.
Great to hear that the emulator is being fixed. Whilst it's cool that 5000 Android developers got a brand spanking new Samsung 10.1 to code on, the rest of us won't have enough willpower to continue development with the emulator in its current state.
I always thought all the XML was just hardcoded piece of.. that couldn't have any use on anything visual, this video has proven me wrong. Thanks Google!
Almost everything shown in the video is available in ADT version 11, which has been released (you can find it at developer.android.com/sdk/eclipse-adt.html ). The new relative layout support is in ADT 12, which has not yet been released, but a milestone build is available. See tools.android.com/recent/ and tools.android.com/download/ .
@theverylittleone I'm glad you've demonstrated that you know absolutely nothing about technology and the problems associated with making the emulator high performance.
The new emulator might even be too good. Imagine people playing games on the emulator :). They might have to open up the market so that people can buy and use our apps without a phone :)
@somegoodboy That feature requires *both* ADT version 11 *and* the new layout library, which has not yet been officially released, but you can download and install preview versions from tools.android.com/download/
i tried to download from tools.android.com/download/ and followed the steps but it says a new version is already installed and let me guess the new version is just nothing like the one running in the video above ? Can anyone help me out ?
@MrJoso101 selection of a personal laptop is a matter of taste. notice that Xavier uses Linux on a ThinkPad. Does it matter whether Tor has a Mac? I really don't think so. Besides, many good developers have multiple notebooks, so there's nothing wrong with getting a Mac and using it to develop Android. Google competes with Microsoft too, so what, they can't use Windows anymore?
the irony is you are watching this on youtube owned by google. another irony is that mac os x is unix just like android which is built on linux. only difference - android is fully open source and free.
@jehcrazyjehcmy Only 4GB for my e-mail/browsing computer. Checked Task Manager and Opera uses around only 1GB with 20+ tabs open. lol, right now I have about 50 actually. Nothing a modern computer can't handle really.
Please, Google, introduce Qt Libraries in Android... A lot of apps will be ported and let's be sincere, Qt Framework is a lot more better. Android might receive some very good UI love with QtQuick/QML... Qt Lighthouse only needs the libraries on the Android, the rest of the job it will do himself...
@einc70 no shit :-) The accent itself doesn't bother me as much, but it's the way he talks and moves...very irritating to look at and listen too... he should take a course on "Effective Presentations" (IBM used to have such a course...it was brilliant...videotaped you while presenting...damn confronting, but teaches you how to present something without irritating your audience :-) )
When will Android get an interface builder comprable to the iOS the one that comes with Eclipse is utter !@!@#... That is the biggest thing holding back android. When it takes an hour to layout something as simple to do in 5 minutes on iOS you know its horribly broken..
Okay, I love Android, am impressed with Google, but please, give your staff some training on effective presentations!!! This presentation irritates the hell out of me: first of all, the speaker can't stand still AT ALL...secondly, he has to work on his pronunciation and tempo ... with such an accent, you should speak slower. Apart from that, good stuff

Hiring Tor was such a boon for Android developers... this new UI builder is just wonderful.
I can't really describe how excited I am about the new tools that are being developed for Android
Awesome work..one of the best: Layouts to next level.. Relative Layout..

Just saw the new UI tools... OMG
The most frustrating part of Android development solved -- even made enjoyable? It's so beautiful....
Great Work guys!

Great vid! Thx!
Great stuff

I am a complete newbie and want to start developing apps. Any leads to where I can start?
includes feature is kinda cool
Nice, but it seems that for apps that uses Google API the tool is not working, there's no theme availables on the tool.
Does this work with Eclipse for windows? Can't see anything similar to the demo.
Tor has an awesome shirt.... i want it.
i tried to download from tools.android.com/download/ and followed the steps but it says a new version is already installed and let me guess the new version is just nothing like the one running in the video above ? Can anyone help me out ?

@MrFreemiel i can see how ineffective this can be....

If it's open source it's free already.
We've just posted a preview build of ADT 11 at tools.android.com/download/

too fast speaking, not funny explanation. this is not the worst lesson i have ever heard.

I'm late to the party.
Wish I could understand the french dude... very frustrating...
The presenter is very difficult to understand....
