Lake Macquarie Recycling

  • A couple of weeks ago I jumped on the freeway and headed north after work one morning. The idea of the daytrip was to visit some councils in the Hunter area, and although I wasn't as successful as I hoped I'd be, I was lucky enough to get 2 of the old recycling trucks on the job in Lake Macquarie.
    I'd been through the service area in the morning, but all I found was empty garbage bins, full recycling bins and no trucks. I returned early in the afternoon, circling a number of areas for a 3rd time and I happily found the big former Concord truck nearing the end of the run. After videoing that one, I crossed into the neighbouring area and turned up at the same time as one of the single-axles. The truck in this video is #9113, seen here working towards the end of a Wednesday shift in the suburb of Fassifern. A big thanks to the driver, I hope he enjoys the footage along with everyone else.
    For those of you unaware, there are three councils involved in a regional recycling contract known as HRR (Hunter Resource Recovery). The contract has been going since 1997 and is due to renew in July next year, with Singleton becoming the fourth member council and Solo Resource Recovery continuing to handle the job. The original service involved a split bin to seperate the paper from bottles, but things went co-mingled just recently. When I was there I spotted a team of 3 removing a certain part from all the yellow-lidded 240Ls, which is why you may notice some bins in the video have the divider and others don't.
    All of these old trucks are still found working in Lake Macquarie, however there are four newer machines which were put into operation a few years ago to work under Cessnock and Maitland. I have a video titled "Maitland Recycling (SCRAP System)" which gives you a look at one of these newer trucks collecting the split bins with the water jet in proper use. Other than that, I am yet to upload two more videos featuring current HRR trucks and may return for another of these old single-axles before the contract ends. Otherwise I should be back there for the new fleet in 2013.

    Very nice Mitch. This truck has a very nice sound to it and it will be sad to see it go. It was cool how the driver sprayed the water jet has he went past a few times. This would have to be some of your best work. Like/fav as all ways.

    Bad ass truck 😃 you won't get 'em anymore which is a shame.. even though it can flip lids all the recycling still falls into place without flipping the lids off I suppose.. Great vid all up!

      There is 1 more of these left that services Kyogle Council, it's just a much newer model and on a 6x4 ACCO. The only reason this truck wasn't flipping lids is because at this time the recycling service had become fully commingled, therefore everything fell into the same place together. If it was still in use as a proper split bin truck, the lid flipping would be essential for the system to be effective.

    Well done! Great video. It's awesome to see the water jet. Reminds me of the Fairfield trucks many years ago

    I hope they're getting that truck service soon as that black smoke doesn't make them look good.
    As far as the fully co-mingled is concerned, it should still be bottles and and paper collected in either a split bin(weekly) or 2 240Ltr bins(fortnightly) But the MRF that receives the recycling should be fully co-mingled capable, so that then said recycling is of the highest quality possible, and therefore worth more at market.

    hahaha I knew you'd spot that tripod shot, was waiting for it to be noted in a comment :P I had a crack at a similar angle with the Clarence truck (which failed), but after seeing yours I found it looked cooler with the camera sitting at ground level. Thanks mate!

    Thanks mate, yeh I'm starting to throw a few more tripod shots in now, tidier action and less effort on my behalf =] I presume the new trucks will look like what's being used in Tweed and Ballina with the big bodies; might've redesigned their equipment by then though. Yep this driver was a top bloke.

    Fantastic video buddy, check out this replica body and chassis that used to collect in Holroyd haha but the only difference was the arm, more of the Maitland SCRAP design! Man this sounds awesome but terrible at the same time, that diesil l soot is shocking and needs to be addressed. Can't have that happening till the new trucks arrive. Nice shots you threw in and 11:45 reminded me of a camera angle I used in my recent video which you liked in particular haha!! Cheers Mitchell :D

    haha Yeh just goes to show what the raw exhaust output from the engine can look like, sorta looks cool =] The Concord truck is like this, just older and it has an extra axle on the back... these 4x2s have always been in the Hunter.

    Hi Mitch. 9113 was listed for sale on gumtree yesterday. I am hoping the body is still around. Solo have finished up in port Stephens now also (as of last month) rather boring now with all the old solo stock gone.

    Yep considering these trucks are around 15 years old, they're still going very well, looks like the company is keeping them maintained. With what I've been told there are 4 permanents between Maitland/Cessnock along with an older one which seems to be an extra for the big days. As for Lake Mac I forgot exactly how many, but at least 5 are on the job, might've been 7 though? Gonna miss the comb lifters, really one of a kind, doubt they'll be reintroduced with the benefits of a grabber too.

    Nice video mate, I remember when she was still quite young many years ago and not so independent in cul-de-sacs!! Anyway awesome driver, spraying the jet for you, I believe euro5 are coming into town next June ! Shame you could not get back to newy to try and get the international:( Ciuld you please send me a pic of this truck and the garbage truck?

    Can't spell diesel, haha corrected it! Yeh I like the camera angle, something a little out of the ordinary! I tried it and I had to use part of a drive way where it dips down or the gutter would block half the view, it didn't come to mind until I remembered I wanted to try this angle but I wish there were more bins in the shot. Reason also is I wasn't bothered running down the street haha!! Cheers buddy, once again good work :-) I'm always looking for new angles.

    Awesome video mitch. Bloody great to this old girl still going strong and doesn't look like it does a bad job. Is there any chance you know how many trucks they've got for for these three councils. Hey you should put the clarence truck up next to compare to this one as they have almost the same bodies. It will be a shame for all the comb lifters go I hope somewhere along the track the solo engineers will re-introduce the comb again but I don't think it will happen.

    I'm sure they'll get it fixed up, wouldn't be good to keep it like that for the next 7 or so months. Sorta looks cool but =] I agree with you about keeping paper and bottles seperated at point of collection, but as I understand it, the whole idea about co-mingled is making it simpler for the residents... at least for those who think glass is a form of paper. I don't think streamed recycling is going to be around for too much longer.

      Imo seperate paper cardboard and a seperate glas service would be smarter
      Maybe all as 140ltr bins

    Y'know in April 30th 2013 they're geting new green waste trucks? They may even get new garbage trucks. (I don't think this includes Cessnock of Maitland Councils.)

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  11 років тому +1

    Nope... all the ACCOs I've videoed feature a muffler. They'd sound pretty wicked with a straight pipe but.

    Wow Mitch! That truck sounds awesome and terrible at the same time! Are there any Iveco ACCOS without the muffler? Do you have any footage of one without the muffler, with a straight pipe in its place?

    Hi Mitch I live in Lake Macquarie, I really miss these old trucks they were one of a kind! Do u know if they still have an of the old ones? And btw why didn't lake mac pick sulo for the green waste bins? They picked mastec??? Why

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  7 років тому

      Nope all these older ones are long gone to my knowledge, I understand the only ones they kept were the newer 08 models which did Cessnock and Maitland. I'm pretty sure back when they did tendering for the green-waste contract there was something related to bin supply and delivery, so it might be worth browsing through the council website, might come across the tenders review and that'll probably answer why they chose Mastec.

      The smoke comeing out of the exhaust pipe is just the Engine smoke.
