Maitland Recycling (SCRAP System)

  • For this machine, I'll use the exact same words I used for the Blue Mountains truck... it's massive, has a great sound to the engine and looks awesome! On Tuesday 16th, December 2008 I took a bus and three trains to the Hunter Valley, found 160km (100 mile) way up north of Sydney. I jumped off at a suburb called Thornton, which is found under Maitland City Council.
    A company called Hunter Resource Recovery (HRR) manages the recycling service within a particular area of the Hunter Region, comprising of Lake Macquarie, Cessnock and Maitland councils. Each council has the same recycling system, involving a fortnightly collected, east-west split 240L which has been in operation since 1997. The contractor for the region's recycling collection is Solo Resource Recovery, another Richards company.
    The type of truck that collects the bins in the three councils is known as the SCRAP (Simultaneous Collection of Recyclables & Paper) System, one of Solo's three unique split collection trucks. The 5-week-old truck in this video reflects Solo's 4th split-body design, adding to the 3 previous models. These three councils are the only ones that use the SCRAP System in Australia.
    This type of truck's operation is pretty straight-forward: the bin sits on the teeth of the lifter, a jet stream of water flips the lid open, then the bin is raised where the truck and bin dividers meet perfectly. The bottles fall into the street-side compartment (back section of bin) and the papers into the kerbside compartment (front section of bin). With the new bodies, a large specially designed paddle packer clears both compartments.
    I really hope you guys enjoy the footage of this rare truck and collection system - I certainly did being the first time I got to see this in person. All ratings and comments would be fantastic! Then of course a big thanks goes to the driver, a very friendly and helpful bloke.
    Body Make: Jaysolo Compactor (Solo RR Model)
    Model: SCRAP System
    Chassis: Iveco Acco
    Council: Maitland City
    Contractor: Solo Resource Recovery
    Collection Type: Bottles & Paper Recycling

    Mad truck, like it when it sprays the lids open

    It's amazing how efficient ASL's have become. Recycling is a perfect application for this technology. Where I live, the men have to stoop down and manually lift 2 bins, which are only about 18" tall. It's lousy for the homeowner also. In my case, about half of the waste stream is recycled (more if measuring by weight). For refuse, I get a 90 gal wheelie that I usually never fill up. The little bins are dinosaurs of the past(no pun intended). These ASLs solve that problem, and look at that SPEED!

    thats a pretty nice truck, it even sprays the lid opens. you did a good job finding this truck in action. thanks ;) 5/5

    - body is made by Solo Resource Recovery (a cousin to JJR, so have their similarities in design)
    - body has a vertical divider and yep, one paddle does both compartments
    - contamination seems to occur when the bottles don't have a smooth discharge out of the bin, then when he shakes, the bottles fall into the paper compartment.
    - that hissing is the water jet building up pressure to flip open the lid
    - thanks for the words :D

    A jet spray of water is shot through the bin lip and flips the lid open.

    You got Cessnock too, three councils part of HRR. Solo just started a split bin service with Kyogle not too long ago... think that's the last of it otherwise.

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  15 років тому

    Oh and sorry, the water is needed to open the lid because if the lid's closed, it gets in the way of the divider and the materials don't discharge properly.

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  15 років тому

    Glad you liked it :D
    That 'flap' is also there to stop the bin falling to it's death, is a pretty cool thing for a side loader. The garbage in this council is serviced by an MJ Refuse, I was lucky to get a MkV model =]

  • @AussieGarbo

    There's a jet-stream of water that flies up through a whole in the lip of the bin, which hits the lid and flips it open.

    Didn't look at who the bin manufacturer actually was, but taking a look I think it's either Otto or Nylex... pretty old bins.

    Yep, this body is pretty much identical to the SPARRC - Solo RR uses this same design for all the new split trucks by the looks of it.
    If you look inside a SPARRC and this SCRAP, they'll be the exact same - vertically split. There's no conveyor system on this one, everything's done by a paddle. Don't know if you noticed, but it looks like they've put the SPARRC & SCRAP/SCORR design into one - go to 3:55 and watch until 4:07, you'll see how the divider panel moves, just like in the SPARRC.

    Very close! Came out of Farnsworth, passed me on Railway, then crossed Eurimbla into Edwards.

    Well air wouldn't probably have as much of a strong impact than that of water - light gas vs heavy liquid. I'm sure if air could work they would've used it, so guess there's an inefficiency.
    Yes I'm pretty sure the STARR Systems are still available, but none have been sold down here.

    My ex brother inlaw lost his leg on that intersection before the roundabout was there a bloke in a 4X4 with an extra plate welded on the bottom of the bullbar came through the give way sign eating a burger and hit him even though the bike had it's lights on permanently, luckily 2 nurses lived on the corner and rushed out to stop him bleeding to death on his birthday 28 December.

    If the lid isn't opened the materials won't fall into the right compartments.

    the dividers fall out pretty easily, at my aunties it fell out and they gave her a whole new bin.. im moving to this oncil next week :D

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  15 років тому

    Yep, these trucks are probably much better than the older trucks: better tailgate design, packing system and body size. Though I have a feeling glass breakage may be increased with the taller fall height, right to the bottom of the hopper, compared to the others which had about only half the fall.
    I'm not totally sure if there'll be some in Lake Macquarie - guess it depends if Cessnock's getting any, but there may be 1 or 2 replacing some oldies in Lake Mac.

    nice truck and vid! Did you know that the city of charles sturt in SA is contracted by Solo and each seprate truck has a blue signage for the garbage, a yellow signage for the recycling and a green signage for the green waste?

    im not really sure about other areas but my recycling week is next week and i live in beresfield which is 1 train station before thornton. There is so many different bins in newcastle council but mainly there is really old otto bins for garbage and some sulo ones but the newest garbage bins are totally black with a red lid nearly all of the recycle bins are sulo 2 series but the newer ones are the newer sulo bins.i think maybe next year we will be changing to the three bin system but im not sure

    Awesome vid Mitch! But i just find it hard to understand why the recycling bins have dividers in them. It's like what's the point of that? It's all the same material right?
    Anyway, great upload, Mitch and look forward to seeing more truck footage! :)

    • @AussieGarbo
      @AussieGarbo  9 років тому +2

      Matty Fitch Back when recycling was first introduced paper and bottles had to be separated, as the technology used today to sort comingled recycling wasn't around back then. So it was common practice to have individual bins for paper and cardboard or divided bins like these to keep the two waste streams separate. Now these divided bins aren't necessary as paper and bottles are collected in one bin all mixed together.

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  15 років тому

    I could've followed it for hours if I had the time... first time I ever got to see the system in action! It would be pretty cool to operate, except the times where you drive those few extra critical millimetres and miss the bin :D Not totally sure, but there may be an air version, can't say I've seen it myself. When the lids didn't open on those two bins, I'm guessing it's because the water didn't get pumped as well or there wasn't enough pressure for the blast??

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  14 років тому +1

    Yep they still sort everything at the moment; don't see why they'd still be using divided trucks if they mix it up in the end. I remember when I took these videos that there were some bins without dividers, stupid residents.

    Not the case with JJ Richards, JR Richards and Solo Resource Recovery :D

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  15 років тому

    Would work well for commercial bins where you don't need to give out split 240's to everyone, wonder if that's the reason?
    I wonder how the larger paddle delivers less force than the typical one? Would be cool to know... maybe if it's lighter weight or something?

  • @AussieGarbo

    JJ Richards doesn't operate in Port Stephens, maybe that someone was referring to JR Richards which still doesn't operate there, but does nearby.

    Yer I noticed a lot of new Sulo garbage bins when I was up there, recycle seemed to look a lot the same.

    i just moved to maitland council.... when we moved in the bin had no divider.... rang solo and we got a new sulo bin... it is way different now the divider is really thin and is held in with pop rivets.... pretty weird.

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  11 років тому

    I'm thinking air might not be suitable due to it possibly "dispersing" once blasted out, as it will be gas mixing with gas. I guess a valid comparison would be pouring water into water - I imagine you'd lose a lot of the force propelling the liquid. Another reason may be that water is heavier and denser than air, so there's more power when it hits the lid, providing a better result. These are my thoughts anyway =]

  • @tylerrathbun5388
    @tylerrathbun5388 11 років тому +1

    Hi, Mitch do you know why they use water for the spray and not air?

  • @AussieGarbo
    @AussieGarbo  15 років тому

    Lack of pressure is probably due to the idea of "modern technology" :D I know the rocker on the joystick controls the diverter flap in the hopper, so I'd assume it'd be on the joystick too... not like it'd be under the driver's seat or something! lol

      Non-active Account, DONT BOTHER SUBSCRIBING!!! No. In sa prospect had split bins and were surviced by solo. Then in came the three bin system which cleanaway hadthen east waste got it last year. Cleanaway had split binsystem in tea tree gully and east waste had burnside split bins. A fewother sa councils had it but these were split for garbage and recycle

    from someone who wroks on these buckets, JJR build crap, go MJ. JJR lifter arms fall apart in a matter of weeks. And as for the picking up of bins, STOP SHAKING THEM, this causes more headaches for the mechanics than its worth
