Hello Charlene [ Retro to Metro Reactions ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wembley Arena in 2015, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band and Marco Hietala, bassist and singer.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Not the usual first song to stumble across in the Nightwish playbook, but so very glad you found them nonetheless. There is a lot to discover with this band and you haven't even begun to understand Floor's lyrical and vocal control and range. It's natural to compare to Amy Lee when you first hear her, but Floor's range and abilities are superior and Amy is a great singer. Looking forward to more.

Hello Charlene - what a completely different introduction to Nightwish and the Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen - ALPENGLOW ! - a pick me up mid concert offering - nice, subtle, happy and joyous to let the band get their breath back before the closing drama of their concerts. I have subscribed and hopefully you take the challenge to watch more of the greatest vocalist I have ever heard and also some of the finest musicians to ever walk the planet. An interesting place to start. One of the nice things about Nightwish is that they will actually shoot for nice and like as a goal with in their sets and albums. Something that doesn't strain musically or emotionally.
When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turns 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

Welcome to Nightwish. Fantastic band. Fantastic composer. Beyond fantastic singer. The band does do heavier songs and Floor can bring the grit. Even growls. Floor sings every genre of music. She is the most versatile, powerful and pitch perfect singer I have every heard and I've been around for 81 years. If you're looking for a particular style for a song, just name it and Nightwish and Floor have songs that will fill the bill. 😊🤘
Oh and I like Amy Lee, Floor however is on a different level. Floor can sound operatic, rock, siren, pop, and do it on a level I've never seen. Also her stage presence if great. One of the best bands I've seen in my let's say 5 plus decades.
A NIGHTWISH set list takes you on an emotional rollercoaster. This is one of their "feel good" numbers. Hopefully you'll check out more and discover how wonderful & diverse their music is.
BTW North Americans often make the Amy Lee comparison - to the point that it's become something of a meme.

Vous venez de faire connaissance du métal symphonique et de notre reine Floor, mais vous n'avez qu'effleuré le dessus de l'iceberg et vous n'êtes qu'a l'entrée du terrier de lapin. Je vous souhaite de bons floorgasmes et continuez vos réactions nous serons toujours derrière vous pour vous soutenir pour notre groupe...... Encore plus d'écoutes s'il vous plait...... Merci. Continuez sur le festival du Wacken Open Air 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper, les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe et sont à écouter absolument. Habituellement les nouveaux réacteur commence avec le Ghost Love Score, une merveille qui montre une partie de l'étendu de la gamme de Floor. Ensuite faites le Ever Dream qui commence comme une douce ballade voix piano et sur un signe de Marko ( le bassiste ) continue d'accélérer pour finir comme un train à grande vitesse, puis essayez du plus lourd avec Ghost River pour entendre le mélange des voix de Floor avec Marko ou encore plus lourd avec Romanticide..... NW songs differ a lot. We're talking about a genre known as Symphonic Metal. They have twice covered the main theme "Phantom of the Opera", and have more aggressive songs. We'd have to know better to guide you as to where your tastes might fit what songs - they differ a lot. "Shoemaker" is a song dedicated to Eugene Shoemaker (a renowned scientist), "Elan" is an uplifting song. "Noise" is a song often misinterpreted - people think it's preachy, while in reality it speaks to the positives and cautions about the negatives. Basically, it's saying filter out the negatives and embrace the positives. "Ghost Love Score" is a song that really showcases the singer's abilities. "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a sad song, essentially a musical suicide of the composer of most of NW's music. The composer (the keyboard player) made a mistake. When the band fired the first singer after nine(?) years with the band, they handed her a letter detailing that fact and explaining why. This was fine. Something happened and they decided to publish that letter, humiliating that singer publicly in the process. The fallout was huge. Several people publicly criticized the band, friends betrayed the composer, etc. To say that there was much bitterness and anger would be an understatement. It led to a deep depression for the composer. Working through it meant doing the one thing he did best - write a song about his feelings. The song is a roller coaster of emotion and is around 15 minutes long. It's kind of rough to watch if you're a suicide survivor, yet it's also inspirational. Again, it may or may not be for you. Most NW songs do share a common theme - uplifting, positivity, inspirational, fun, or just fun. However, whether you find that to be the case might depend on your life experiences and your musical tastes. This is a very popular band with very loyal followers all over the world. A few aren't just "fans", they are full fanatics. Just like any Internet reaction, an implied slight can be poorly received by nutcases. Block those people and know that the majority of NW fans are polite - which is why you may not hear from them unless they are supplying information.

Wow, even this song makes the Amy comparison. The comparison is as wrong as it is right. Amy is a classically trained pianist and that influences her singing. Amy sings in a very European way because of the classical background. But Floor is much more versatile. In Europe there are more Amys and especially in symphonic metal. The song was almost only played live on the tour for the album, but is one of the more popular ones.
Amy Lee would kill to have Floor Jansen's voice. This is but a fraction of what she and the band can do. @@RetroToMetroReactions Definitely a bit of a unusual one to start your journey with. For instance it mentions Walden which is a reference to their song My Walden based on a book by Henry David Thoreau. He stayed in a cottage near Walden pond in Massachusetts for a couple of years to experience the peaceful rural life. My Walden is about a haven of peace. Definitely check out Ghost Love Score and then Romanticide, both from the Wacken Festival in 2013. They will give you a more rounded view but you will find no two songs are the same. Enjoy.
