Great review. Does the laptop slow down after extended use? I think another reviewer indicated HP is conservative with managing processor temperature and as a result clock speeds are reduced. Two points that would prevent me from seriously considering this laptop: 1) the lack of a 32GB memory option and 2) USB 4. At this point in time USB 4/TB 4 should be the standard for USB-C. And memory can be a huge bottleneck - 16GB may not be sufficient in a couple of years. 32GBs gives you the piece of mind to avoid memory bottlenecks and know the laptop will be relevant in a couple of years.
Complete agree with the memory limitation being the biggest shortcoming for this package. Integrated graphics that don’t suck can soak up a ton of memory, which bottlenecks your nice 7840

This price is fantastic. Unfortunately the new one isn't available in my country. And Zenbooks are much more expensive here in Europe. Which one would you choose when you look for the quietest 14 inch laptop? Pavilion Plus, Zenbook 14 or Yoga Slim Pro 7?
Hi Josh, great review. I have a question. I don't have an issue at all using my phone that has an OLED screen. How similar are the screens between laptop and phone OLEDs? I shouldn't have an issue with the flickering of the OLED screen of the Pavilion Plus 14 right?
I dunno if I can resolve your query but they have similar OLED display like we have on our phone. You won't notice any flickering at all. It shows flickering whenever you see the screen through camera. Pwm dimming is a good feature which maintains colour accuracy.
Hi Josh. What are your thoughts about "ASUS - Zenbook 14" 120Hz OLED Touch Laptop - EVO Intel 13 Gen Core i9 with 32GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForece RTX 3050 - 1TB"? Is it worth it?
HP website now says this model is having DC dimming , which is complete opposite of PWM ... Which should have zero flickering. Can you check and let us know?

It's a great machine. I love mine and it's the best productivity laptop I've ever bought. It genuinely feels like using a MacBook 🎉at times. Battery life for all tasks is crazy good. No battery anxiety? And on a windows 11 machine?? I think you'll enjoy it
@jeevejavari8461 i concur! got it two evenings ago, not even 48 hours with it yet but so far i like everything about it. it was also on sale $300 off so that's nice too! i only wish the ports were on the left side. i come from a macbok and a lenovo from work so im always trying to plug it it on the wrong side lol. ill get used to it. and yeah, the feeling is to mac similar, especially since i have one and im switching between both the time i transfer my files in the hp right now. i regret buying the mac, it was twice the price for equal performance and i slowly got locked into the apple ecosystem. i'm tired of being stuck there, i'm selling everything i have from Apple, even to ill lose some money, and going back to windows/android! still i'm happy i tried it for a a year tho lol 😅 but i hope this Pavilion will last me for at least 6 years. the specs are way above what i need for now.

Plus at the same sale I got my partner a (customised) HP Pavilion 15 with the 13th Gen Intel i-5U, Intel’s Iris Xe graphics, 16GB of pretty decent DDR4 RAM, 512GB SSD, B&O sound and a quite decent 15.6” 250 nit display + a cute HP mouse for $509 with free shipping. Backlit keyboards on both machines, and both are silver coloured. We’ve both used Dell laptops for the last decade and I’ve had a couple of IBM Lenovos, IBM Thinkpads and an Acer. All good laptops, but what HP has offered its customers these last few weeks is unbelievably good - so we made the switch!
Anyone facing build quality issues on this one? I bought one in Prime day sales last week for dollar equivalent of $690. It had a Sep '23 manufacture date and came with a completely depleted battery. That aside I'm facing below issues 1. The bottom of the case is ever so slightly curved outward ls and it makes the rubber feet not touch at the ends. This leads to wobble when I rest my palms on the keyboard and type. 2. The fan has a high pitch whine when it is running. It's an odd frequency that's a bit grating. 3. Touchpad is a bit springy and rattles on tap. This gives a slight inaccurate feeling on clicks. I use a Macbook pro from work, so I'm not sure I'm coming off as spoilt, but I i certainly didn't have similar issues in my past laptop purchases including an HP one.

I'm coming off a Surface Book 2 and I wanted to find a good working laptop that was in my price range, and actually found this laptop today on HP's website for a one day sale of $499.00! Hello there, Josh! I found an HP Pavilion Plus 14 with almost the exact same specs as the one in the video on eBay, but the one on eBay has 1TB of storage. Get this: the laptop costs no more than $600 where I'm from. So, should I buy it? (Excellent video by the way)
I love this one, but should i go with the i7-1355U for $1600 AUD, rather than the Ryzen 7 7840U at $2200 AUD (all specs the same)? What would i be missing out on
The AMD variant has more performance per watt, meaning that it will be performant and have better battery life and cooler thermals. Also, the integrated GPU (Radeon 780M) is comparable with some old dedicated GPUs such as the 1650. Intel Iris Xe is just in need of a dire upgrade at this moment.
Would it make sense to buy the basic configuration with Ryzen 5 and IPS display? I use the laptop only at home so 300 nits should be enough. And the PWM flickering will be gone right?
It can. I use a portable folding dual monitor setup and one cable powers both screens and video works just fine. Great laptop all around. Sucks not usb 4 but still not bad

Hi, firstly thanks for watching. I wanted to keep this video short and to the point. Here are the pros, here are the cons. As no laptop in this price range and form factor are different when it comes to upgradeability I didn't think it worth spending time discussing. All Windows laptops at this price point and form factor have soldered RAM and upgradeable storage. Hope that helps!

Yes I know that use case well.... we are React here btw for our development. For the price it is an excellent option. If you are to compare it to a more premium laptop like HP's Spectre 14, you will get a little more fan noise on this one (still not bad though), and it doesn't feel as premium. Please make sure to get the AMD version
thank you for mentioning the PWM, almost nobody does this in their reviews, special not on Notebooks. PWM is a issue most people dont even know about, but wondering why they always got eye straing, headache etc by using their oled Devices.
When you click the link, upgrade to the Ryzen 7 78740U version. That has the larger battery. You can confirm this by looking on the right side where they list out the parts. - Hope that helps!
If we consider two AMD processors 7730 and 7530, that is, 8 cores and 6 cores, which of them will work longer when playing a movie from Netflix, all other things being equal? In theory, when there are more cores, less energy is wasted because the processor is more powerful. But intuition suggests the opposite.
So from your video "Best Laptop for Programming in 2023 ULTIMATE GUIDE" would this fill in the check marks? Software Development, Data Science, or Data Analyst?
Think this one with the better display is better, and slightly cheaper now. Also you can upgrade to 32gb of ram for $150 more, which i think is worth it
Zenbook feels better built and HS processor can give a bit more raw performance. U series is a bit restrained, but you do get less heating in a slim chassis due to that. Also 780M on this is not the fastest due to HP reducing power delivery. Screen in HP is of course better, do check in Asus if you're sensitive to screendoor effect on touch OLEDs, especially on lower res ones. There should be a new Pavilion Plus with 8845HS, probably would be best of both worlds(?) See Josh's recommended laptops list for a link.
@@ZupE891 This review was for last gen 7840U model. Likely identical to the one you're referring to except for the processor and should have dual fans now.
Hello, appreciate the video! I have been eying this laptop for some time, but two things has made me tip toe before actually making the purchase... If anyone can help me answering some of my questions, I'll shower them with gold. First dilema is the screen, every review talks exclusively about the OLED display and dismisses the other options, specifically the IPS display. My problem is, that I expect to use this display pretty much exclusively for VS Code (for many hours every day), no gaming or watching content. I'm worried about the OLED burn-in, and I know that the new screens are better in preventing that, but from my understanding, it is still a factor and an issue from the long term point of view. My question is, won't the bigger resolution IPS display be better for my use case? I don't know if this laptop would still be considered "good buy" even with the IPS display. Like I said, I don't care about the colors or the blacks, when all I'll be looking at is the VS Code. Second question would be in regard to the connectivity. Since this is AMD laptop, it doesn't have Thunderbolt (nor USB4, as someone in the comments said). Is it realistic to have a USB C hub, which would support two external Full HD 60hz monitors plus ethernet connector? Or is it physically impossible, or maybe the USB C speeds are not enough for that? I could get away with connecting one monitor throught the HDMI, but since i have to have a cable internet connection, I'm missing one port. I need to have a power connection, two external monitors, and a ethernet connection. HP is selling one USB C hub, which would work just fine with it's connectivity, but I don't know, if the USB C ports can handle all the "traffic", for the lack of the better word. I apologize for bothering anybody with this, but I have failed at using Google, so I don't have a better alternative then to start asking people. I'll be extremely grateful to anyone who can direct me anywhere close to getting my answers. Cheers and I hope you have a nice day!
bought this laptop with a 1335u 16gb ram and 2k res for 640€. Best one cos no need for a second power supply. can use my phone charger also for the laptop. biggest advantage.
By the way have you ever considered doing shorts to shout out great deals on laptops. Sometimes they pop up quickly and then they are gone within a week. For example, Lenovo had some fantastic deals on some of their laptops. A quick YT short about a sale would be a nice high value add on for your viewers...especially around the holidays and drive more views. Production value wouldn't need to be high at all...could be done via your phone. Just an idea I thought I'd share.
Hi Jet, we've talked about this extensively here actually. Do you think people would prefer this or a regular live stream before key sales periods Black Friday, Christmas, Back to School?
@@JustJoshTech I think both would be useful...here is why...many of these sales just popup and don't last terribly long so timing is critical. If you wait to release a video that's meant to incorporate seasonal sales you'll likely miss out on many short term incredible one time sales. For example, I recently purchase the Lenovo 11th Gen X1 Carbon for with 32GB ram for ~$1,200. That sale was out of cycle with the normal seasonal sales (early October) but it was a fantastic sale. Occasionally I happen to stumble on these deals by chance and I'm sure there are many that I just don't see. It would be nice if someone was watching for these "pop-up" sales and letting us know with just a quick short (15 seconds). This could be just another value your channel could provide. Also It would be awesome if someone kept a spreadsheet with the best known sales prices so that you could "qualify the sale" and let us know whether the sale is truly a great sale compared to other sales prices throughout the year...sort if like camelcamelcamel but focused on laptops. Just my thoughts.

I'm planning to buy it but there are no reviews about it yet.
Wow, seems like a great deal! Thanks for filling us on on these - I had no idea about the ZenBook 14X, and now this!
Thanks Josh. Great video as usual. You are right...This is an amazing deal for this price range. Glad to see HP pushing the price to value envelope. Definitely a buy.
It's $729 because it will break just outside of warranty and it's impossible to repair, that's part of their business model
For me the dedicated page keys especially home and end are a must. Just bought a new lenovo laptop and its going back because I constantly hit the metal rim
Awesome review as always Josh!!! I got one of these from the Costco deal.
You have mentioned about PWM flickering, hence I wanted to know how I can test my laptop for sure to see if it has the issue & how do I know if it will affect me?
FYI: I haven't used an OLED screen for computers/laptops before.
I got it from costco too, do u think Asus 14x is better or this hpp+? Asus doesn't have GPU but has Dolby Atmos and Thunderbolt
Josh's review of this laptop is spot on. I also compared this to the Asus Zenbook 14x & found that Asus has better fell & built quality. The speakers and touchpad on Asus are better. I did not do any stress test or played games, but the HP seems to run cool & quiet compared to the intel chips of Asus.@@oceans11seagate
16 def aint bad though which is why apple charges a fortune for that upgrade
Complete agree with the memory limitation being the biggest shortcoming for this package. Integrated graphics that don’t suck can soak up a ton of memory, which bottlenecks your nice 7840
@@chuboasshippo218116gb is great, right up till it isn’t and then your computers performance is cut in half of what I could be. You have a point but let’s not let manufacturers shove this early end of life BS down our throats. Apple leads the way on marketing this garbage limitation on product life in order to force upgrades
That thick bar on the top is bothering me
Agreed. Sharpie the top lid 😁
Same, plus the bottom bar.
This is HP Design
@@musaioso it's shitty and outdated.
If you don't have much money it really doesn't matter 2 years ago I had a dell laptop refurbished from 2014 and it ran fortnite everything low on 25 fps so this is good for most people
Thanks, Josh 😊💻👌🏽 I'm tempted to purchase this, but I'm wanting a larger screen size, plus the 10 key. What are your thoughts on the HP Pavilion Plus 16 inch? I also work from home, so I'm needing something that would be great for running multiple programs.
You didn't mention it has no touch screen. That's a big deal to me after having used one for so long.
Are you referring to the OLED screen? There are several options for it
@@JustJoshTech yes the OLED one, it mentions DC dimming
@@JustJoshTech search for dimming in the link
I'm going to reach out to them. Thanks for the note @@KRISHANU01
I am always learning from you guys, so i'll check
I love that home pgup, pgdn end column. Used them all the time, and happy that HP maybe the only one that still including them
I’m late but what do you think about getting this laptop at a similar price but with an Intel i5 13500H processor instead along with a 51 Wh battery and Intel Iris Xe Graphics? Is it worth it?
That AMD processor is absolutely nuts.
glad to see oled going down in ranges. ive been wanting to replace my laptop but i find windows laptops to have either horrible screens or having to pay a fortune for professional laptops with niche features i dont need. i just wanna watch videos and check emails, but i dont want to fatigue my eyes. i dont need a killer gaming laptop, i want something average but with a gorgeous screen i can look at for 10 hours. it's already in the mail, let's hope it's the one ive been looking for!
Recommend it?
In India it's going for about 1129usd (converted from inr). IMO that's way above the price of zenbooks with similar specs
Yeah absolutely doesn't make sense for us. The Zenbooks are priced really well
A little late to the party, but do you have any suggestions for a laptop with the same/similar specs, but a more premium build?
Got the HP Pavilion Plus 16 with the 13th Gen Intel i-7H, Intel’s Iris Xe graphics, 16GB of blazing DDR5 RAM (soldered), 512GB SSD, B&O sound and an awesome 16” 400 nit display just before christmas during a 12-hour online blitz sale from HP USA - for $770 with free shipping.
Which is better bet. The 2 sir ?
The base configuration of this laptop is a good option for less than 550$? Is basically the only one I found with good battery life and a zen 4 cpu
Anyone facing build quality issues on this one? I bought one in Prime day sales last week for dollar equivalent of $690. It had a Sep '23 manufacture date and came with a completely depleted battery. That aside I'm facing below issues
Thank you for this video! I'm coming off a Surface Book 2 and I wanted to find a good working laptop that was in my price range, and actually found this laptop today on HP's website for a one day sale of $499.00! I went with this, and its my third "work/school laptop," first one being the Dell Inspiron. Think it will be a great upgrade. You're very informative and make researching laptops easy! Subscibed!
Hello there, Josh! I found an HP Pavilion Plus 14 with almost the exact same specs as the one in the video on eBay, but the one on eBay has 1TB of storage. Get this: the laptop costs no more than $600 where I'm from. So, should I buy it? (Excellent video by the way)
Thanks Josh. What are your thoughts on the Lenovo Yoga Slim (Pro) 7 or 7i compared to this laptop?
Next couple of videos should answer that or I can cover it in the live stream today
@sirsean what did you end up getting? I hope the 7840, it crushes the 1355
You can now order it for $1,379 AUD from HP
The 48Hz mode sounds like it's made for watching movies which are typically shot at 24 fps.
Thanks! Nice Review.
Would it make sense to buy the basic configuration with Ryzen 5 and IPS display? I use the laptop only at home so 300 nits should be enough. And the PWM flickering will be gone right?
no way. OLED and the ryzen 7's GPU performance are much better
Josh .do a review of the new pavilion 16 plus if you can get it, please
Thanks Josh - you do an awesome job with this vids👌👌

Does anyone know if the USB C port can support a portable monitor with power and video over a single USB C cable? Or does that take thunderbolt/usb 4?
It can. I use a portable folding dual monitor setup and one cable powers both screens and video works just fine. Great laptop all around. Sucks not usb 4 but still not bad
@@jeevejavari8461 perfect thank you! I think my use case it would be great. Wish it were a bit lighter, thinner and had usb4, but that this price it's tough to beat

If that Zenbook 14X only has an AMD chip, it would be perfect. I find myself charging too often with the i7-13700H.
GPU it needs, most people don't know what it is.

Good for gaming, coding and editing?
Why is the frameworks 7840u so much more powerful than the HPs? Feeding it more power? Memory speed?
Likely wattage fed to it
Is this exact model available in the UK?
It apears the oled screen is only available with the Ryzen 7
Great video Josh. Did you ever get around to considering a review for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11? It's been released for some time but I recall a Gen 9 review and you spoke quite highly of it.
Yes, I have it and I like it. This year's is actually much improved. Keyboard feels noticeably better than prior years. Trackpad also improved. .... but i'm waiting for my 2nd one to come in before doing the review. I have the FHD+ U series one. But i want to try the OLED model with P series first. I think i should have it out in about 2 weeks.
@@JustJoshTech Sounds good thanks!
Great review, Josh! I am checking the link now to check it out before I buy; however it is not working…?
Nothing about upgradability? Ram and storage?
Hi, firstly thanks for watching. I wanted to keep this video short and to the point. Here are the pros, here are the cons. As no laptop in this price range and form factor are different when it comes to upgradeability I didn't think it worth spending time discussing. All Windows laptops at this price point and form factor have soldered RAM and upgradeable storage. Hope that helps!
I will appreciate if you would be able to recommend similar laptop or the same but with discrete graphics card which is required by software used daily by me. Great video!
Can you please tell me if I should buy this or the Canadian available version of zenbook 14x. I got the zenbook 14x earlier but I had overheating issues and some bugs so I had to return it. Do you think I should get it again or?
Btw I need the laptop for programming and the available version that looks the us one has a p processor

Is this laptop good for programming? I'm a software developer from India who works in web development, micro services, docker, React UI. Please suggest unlike in us in India this laptop is 91k INR.
There's also lenovo thinkbook 14+, which is basically the same hardware-wise, but with a bit worse battery and display, but better build quality.
I will wait for the Zenbook 14X to come out with Ryzen 7 7840U cpu, probably next year. That will be the best of every worlds for me.
That would be the best thing since sliced bread!
do you have an idea which month Asus releases their laptops like the Zenbook 14X?
thank you for mentioning the PWM, almost nobody does this in their reviews, special not on Notebooks. PWM is a issue most people dont even know about, but wondering why they always got eye straing, headache etc by using their oled Devices.
Will you review some laptops with Intel 13th series? Like e.g. 1335U?
there is option to choose the bigger battery at the page link you provided in the description

Software Development, Data Science, or Data Analyst?
Seems like this one is the same price as the ASUS Zenbook 14 inch OLED WUXGA Touch Laptop AMD Ryzen 7-8840HS. Which is better?
Think this one with the better display is better, and slightly cheaper now. Also you can upgrade to 32gb of ram for $150 more, which i think is worth it
Zenbook feels better built and HS processor can give a bit more raw performance. U series is a bit restrained, but you do get less heating in a slim chassis due to that. Also 780M on this is not the fastest due to HP reducing power delivery. Screen in HP is of course better, do check in Asus if you're sensitive to screendoor effect on touch OLEDs, especially on lower res ones. There should be a new Pavilion Plus with 8845HS, probably would be best of both worlds(?)
See Josh's recommended laptops list for a link.

AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS. 45 rather than 40. So it's actually slightly better than the zenbook

@lowcartographer yeah they must of upgraded it. So it should be better than the zenbook other than the cool looking case
Is the base config also good value if you don't care about display? $529
Very
its quite good but i would consider the lenovo slim 5 as its keyboard is black color...
