Hey Josh! Im studying to become an AI developer, will a macbook pro 14 with the base chip be able to handle all of the relevant workload. Also curious on what specs you recommend. Maybe even a m1 pro be enough? Im also taking a course on the side to become a data analyst. Could the m4 handle that type of workload as well? I eagerly want to start building AI models etc but only have a phone atm. There are so many options and people give different advice, you seem to know exactly what you are talking about so please help!
I almost bought a macbook air when they announced that they will sell the base with 16gig and they don't change the price. With this update the air feels like a great bang for the buck laptop. Luckily it was not available at release in my country so had time to rethink it and realized that most of the software that I may need in the future is not supported on mac. Like I'm an MEP engineer, I may enroll and online course in the future, thinking about going back to university for masters ect... So I guess my only choice is staying with windows.
Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura seems like the best option for most students / office work. Yoga Pro 9i for professional work. And if u game a lot Zephyrus G16. Macbook Pro is obvious choice for macos lovers.
Nice list but I disagree very strongly with lumping dev laptops in with creator laptops. Most devs are a lot happier with display, keyboard, battery life, multi core, ram. GPU? just drains battery.
@@JustJoshTech To be fair you've covered that stuff pretty well recently and a lot of devs for personal laptops want to game or do some cuda stuff maybe. You're the reason I will probably be buying a slim 7i aura 15 when it is available in 32GB next week here despite it's limited multicore. Nothing but good things to say about your channel.
I want a laptop that has all of these things *and* a GPU that can be turned off so the thing lasts on battery. Then when you want to game you turn it on again
i feel like the zenbook s16 should be in the programmer section. amazing build quality with a stunning 16in oled panel and one of the lightest 16 in chassis with great multicore performance and battery.
Another drawback of the MacBook for specific people is software and gaming support. Depending on your field, you'll often find that certain software, engineering for example, aren't supported.
Yeah I was going to go M4 Pro 16" with 48GB RAM and 1TB SSD, but for $300 more I can go with the binned M4 Max chip with 36GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I feel like I might go for a little less RAM and get one with more potential GPU for future proofing. Still debating though
Some good options I have seen: - M3 Air at $1,100 with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage. Seen on Amazon USA website. - Surface Laptop 7 13.8 inch at $1,050 for 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of SSD storage. Seen on Microsoft's direct website.
The Macbook Pro M4 Pro (14c) has already been amazing for myself as a mobile (mostly Android) engineer (and Civ/Minecraft player)! I can easily see myself using it until software support is dropped, maybe even after!
Based on a few of your recent videos, I went with a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition, and haven't looked back. I ordered the 32GB version, and it's a beast. Great display, excellent keyboard, great sound, and a truly excellent battery life. I had my concerns about the Lunar Lake, but it handles every task (and light gaming sessions) that I throw at it. Thanks a ton for all of the work you do.
I love ThinkPads, but just speaking transparently, they just haven't innovated as much. Especially considering their price. We did look alot at them and did get in several. I'm not saying they are bad btw, I just would say top 20 but not top 10.
I'm about to start my thesis and my 1tb + 16gb 6800U laptop is already completely full, and frankly I can't even make do with 16gb anymore (computer architecture student). So much software I have to download is >100gb, and I need multiple sub packages and libraries to make things work. I also want to use Cuda to try and accelerate CNN training, and I would like a Zen 5 or lunar lake laptop (Vivado and Quartus require x86 to execute and compile VHDL/Verilog into RTL), and at least 32gb of ram, pref 64gb, and in a 14 inch chasis. Unfortunately right now I don't think there is a single laptop that fits this need that isn't a bulky gaming laptop! The closest would be a PX13, however I really don't want to go smaller screen for coding. It's quite dissapointing! Hopefully the G14 gets refreshed at CES with the new processors as this is a real market - i.e. the graduate and above level STEM market - that is basically exclusively in the ball of Macbooks assuming your software can run on them!
problem with 64gb is that they are rare and super expensive. What I do when I buy a laptop I don't care about preinstalled ssd or ram. It's something I just upgrade right away and then find the best deal with the other features I want. So just make sure you can upgrade but that upgradability makes them a bit thicker than soldered or course. Otherwise just get a kitted out macbook as you said ;)
@@fooboomoo I would definitely prefer a macbook, or honestly a qualcomm laptop since they are so cheap and seem very premium (Surface Laptop + Lenovo Slim 7x), however unfortunately the software used to accelerate the design process for computer architecture is only on x86 platforms. A forum post was made on Xilinx AMD (The developers of Vivado, the most popular IC and Computer Arch design software), and the official response was the algorithm to turn high level VHDL/Verilog code into RTL (Register Transfer Language) requires binaries that can only run on the x86 instruction set (downsides of RISC vs CISC architectures). So unfortunately, my hands are tied in the very expensive hands of high end hardware that doesn't feel and sound like a microwave and that doesn't die after 2 hours of use away from the wall (i.e. non gamer laptops). Also I believe Lunar Lake and Zen 5 only have soldered ram, as the RAM is now baked onto the SOC as apart of the design. Same as meteor lake. If framework can't make it work that I have low hopes for any other manufacturer. Sadge 😥
The best gaming laptop starting at $2.300 + tax is just hilarious to me. I'd imagine that most gamers are quite young and have quite limited budgets but what do I know.
I just bought a niche laptop, the Tuxedo Infinitybook 14... I don't have it yet... But it shows a lot of promise. For 1400 bucks I'm getting: a 16 : 10 1800p 120hz display with 100% sRGB, a Ryzen 7 8845HS, 32GB DDR5 RAM (upgradable), a 2TB NVMe (and an empty slot to add another one later), bespoke assembly, and options for my OS (I chose the "no OS" option). The chassis is a magnesium aluminum alloy, and I'm told that the keyboard and trackpad feel premium. Almost everything about this laptop was customizable. If all of this checks out, this has the potential to be a hard hitting laptop, and I can't wait to try it. I guess when I get it, I can report back my findings... I can compare it to the Yogabook 9i, the Surface Laptop Go 2, and the GPD Pocket 3
Great video! Just a couple things I'd like to throw out there: * You can now run Linux (fedora 41 w/ KDE plasma) pretty much perfectly on the G16/P16. All games run beautifully, RGB is configurable, and you're looking at 8-10 hours of battery life on integrated graphics. * For Macs, I think there is a real downside now, which is that they are the least compatible of all laptops right now, even snapdragon. You really feel the limitation if you want to play games, but compared to Linux or Windows, you're just not going to be able to run everything you want. If you're used to the ecosystem and you just use one or two apps for work though, they are amazing.
I’m ordering Lenovo Ideapad Pro 5 14” Gen 9. AMD Ryzen 7, 32 GB RAM, RTX 3050 6GB, 1 TB storage. Hope it will last longer with me. Thanks to the Black Friday discount.
@gabl4157 the lunar lake laptops are also quiet. I have the zenbook 14 and the fans never kick on. But that's all subjective. I care more about application compatibility
I'm starting an engineering master's soon, so I decided to upgrade from my MateBook X Pro (2018). If I wasn't worried abt compatibility, I would for sure get a macbook because I'm prioritizing portability and power efficiency over everything else. I'm probably getting the Zenbook S14. Even though I'm a little worried abt performance, It can't be worse than my six year old laptop
Please do a video on 16:10 vs 3:2 aspect ratio. I'm a big believer that 3:2 should be the standard on laptops 15 inches and smaller. For everyday tasks, vertical space matters so much more than horizontal space. Everything still feels cramped on 16:10.
Macbook Air M3 is the best. Bought one for $899 16gb/256ssd during Bestbuy sale. I have used Windows laptops for years...but this one is significantly faster and better battery life than any of those. I like Windows UI a little better, but I have adapted to Mac and I'm impressed. It can even do some light gaming. I still keep my Omen Transcend 14 nearby, which has a better keyboard and display, but Mac isn't that bad in those areas and runs circles around it with speed on battery and battery life.
12-core pro chip or 14-core pro chip? The 12 has longer battery is it worth it? Keep the laptop for 7 years, maybe I should get the 14-core pro chip instead?
Most tasks doesn't scale well over 4-6 cores, many will only use 1-2 cores. Unless you know you have a need for the extra cores just save your money or spend them on added storage. Or maybe an extra charger, a nice bag or whatever.
How does the G14 with Ryzen 9 8945HS and RTX 4070 compare to the G16 with Ryzen AI 9 HX and a 4070? Would like a smaller form factor but don’t want to compromise if the G14 is significantly worse.
The main difference is the G16 will feel much cooler to the tough in light use and is a little faster. The G14 always feels warm. The G16 is a big step up with Zen 5. If you get the G14 you need to be ok with a warm feeling laptop
Which should I buy? Microsoft Surface laptop 7 or Asus Zenbook 14 amd 7. I've checked both your reviews (which were great!) and at the moment both laptops are the same price, I am only going to do light school work on the computer and proritize portability which is why I liked these laptops. The only big problem for me is when you mentioned that the surface doesnt support some apps and I will be doing light coding on this laptop. Which would you prefer because I really dont know.
Hi Josh, I’m so glad to see your best laptops of 2024 video. I enjoyed watching each section of the video. I love every single one of your videos, especially for programming. I am currently using the 2024 Legion 7i in glacier white as my main laptop for college, programming, and gaming. I have the 3.2K display, i9-14900HX, RTX 4070, and 32GB. I love the display and the text looks great while coding. I have not played games on it yet, so I’m not sure if mine will heat up. I’m planning on playing Black Myth Wukong after finishing up this year’s semester. And, I would like to ask you, Josh, how would you optimize a Windows laptop, especially a gaming laptop for coding and college work?
I really like and respect your videos. Thank you for your work. I already mentioned it last year, but maybe you should include a "Best Linux laptop" category. I know we are a minority but so are the 2-in-1 laptop folks. 😊 All the best.
Its something as we expand we will work on. Right now my strategy for Linux coverage is to test it for laptops we think are good for programmers, and for any new Tech like when Lunar Lake came out or Snapdragon.
Something Zen 5. One of the Pro Arts, Yoga Pro 7, G16 AMD, I didn't mind the OmniBook Ultra non flip. It is quieter than the Yoga Pro 7. All are a bit different. Check our website for their Pro and Cons.
Of course this comes out the day after I settled on the Asus Vivobook S 14 OLED with Lunar Lake over the HP Pavilion Aero 13, Lmao. Though I guess you guys never reviewed that specific model anyway. Thanks for the list regardless!
I just orderd the vivobook s14 with ryzen ai 370hx 32gig ram and 1T storage. After this video I'm start to questioning my decision, but I feel like for my use case the laptop will be what I'm looking for.
@joelconolly5574 I don't really and even if I do it's either lol or HS so nothing demanding. Tho I saw the new chips have really strong integrated GPUs during the holidays I may try some games I couldn't play in the past years.
I feel like compatability issues need to be mentioned with macbooks like they are with the snapdragon laptops. I know it isnt quite as bad, but it is still a huge issue. Macbooks basically dont run any engineering software natively, and are unable to play most triple a games.
I'm just watching the vid now but your praise of MacBooks had me order a 16GB memory MacBook Air m3 for 850 USD from Amazon with $150 of Applecare plus
Hi, I am from Singapore I am curious that if I buy a laptop from US, what are the problems other than the different type of adaptor that I need to worry about? Or it's just not recommended?
@@junaidv1989 I'm planning on doing that as well. Have you used it long enough to test the battery yet? How is it? I am planning on using it as a productivity laptop to run engineering applications while also gaming on the side.
Hey Josh and team, when are we going to see benchmarks of the Core Ultra 9 288V? I saw it in a laptop in my home country (Australia), I believe it was an MSI prestige AI+ 15? Maybe 13? I don't remember. Either way, very interested in seeing the multicore performance compared to the high end Zen 5 processors we've gotten this year!
I have Msi stealth ai 16 with rtx 4080 which I bought this June and to be honest is really cool. This laptop works really well, even on the battery. The screen is amazing, is very portable and work on it is really enjoyable :) in my opinion it's on this same level as G16 2024 :)
Love the review but I think one category is missing which is budget all-around Ultrabook, basically a Jack of All trades. Your light use category winners are having power efficient but very less powerful Luner Lake Processors or Snapdragon Processors with a lot of compatibility issues. What if I want a laptop for basic daily tasks like browsing, documentation etc. but also want to do programming, big code compilation, running some local databases and SQL queries and some occasional light gaming? For a student or trainee, they can't simply afford multiple laptops for different purposes like you do. IMO, there should have been inclusion of some Ryzen AI HX 365 or 370 based UltraBooks like Asus VivoBook S 14. That laptop, with 24GB ram and HX 365, 2.8K 120Hz OLED display and 1TB SSD is available around $1000 and it can serve a lot of purposes, the light task and the demanding tasks way better than Lunar lake, has high refresh rate and high resolution P3 Color gamut display, plenty of Ram an storage for the price and pretty decent battery life.
Have you checked our website? This was the awards, so best of the best. Let me know if you find some there that suit. If not message back and we will add some
@ Will definitely check. I was actually asking to include one Category for best all rounder UltraBook, which can do it all. The categories you've in this video, I more or less agree but the ask was for a new category for all-rounder ultrabook.
Im torn between legion pro 5i(1600€),legion 7i(1800€) and yoga pro 9i(1950€).All pf them have 4070 ,what would you recommend to me?I want to play games and do programming.
I personally like the Yoga Pro 9i. Just an FYI, please check the notes online about ghosting. It uses a Miniled panel and there is an ever so slight grey to grey ghost. It occurs on all laptops with that type of panel. I personally don't find it too bad BUT you will find that ghosting is better on the 2 Legions you mentioned. That being said the Yoga Pro 9i has a sharper display which is nicer for coding
Thanks for all the help!!! For you or anyone who knows, how long will it take for the nvidia 50 series gpus to get a laptop version in the future? Is there a known trend?
Would have loved an honourable mention of the Ideapad Pro 5 14 or 16 with Ryzen 8845HS At least in Europe its the cheapest 32GB RAM Laptop with a almost current CPU and long battery life as well as high res screen. Costs 800€ for students (to compare to US prices detract 20% VAT so about 650$) Lunar Lake Aura costs 1350€ for students (60% more! than the ideapad; also ideapad has 50% better multicore but only 10% worse single core) ProArt P16 or P13 costs upwards of 2300€ Zephyrus G16 also 2300€ And yeah macbook pros well you know the prices So not really good laptops for CS students who need good CPU, 32GB ram, decen sreens but dont really have money for 2000€ machines
Putting the G16 in the Gaming Laptop category despite something like the XMG Neo 16 which is *actually* the fastest Gaming Laptop? Gamers want speed, they don't want something less paying for more.
Can someone explain what he meant with the Legion Slim 7 comments? I got this laptop because of this channel and didn’t understand if he meant it’s still good
Its still good and a winner from last year. This year it was replaced with a slightly thicker laptop "Legion 7i" i.e. without the "Slim" in the name. They put a CPU in it this year from a more powerful range that draws alot more power. Normally you'd find such a CPU in thicker gaming laptops like the "Legion Pro 7i". Because of this the Legion 7i gets very warm at all times. They should have put a Core Ultra 9 processor, which is the replacement from Intel's H series. That is the right processor for a laptop that size. Btw I have a review out on it, so just search the channel for "Just Josh Legion 7" if you are interested
I would like to buy a macbook pro but only when on sale. I am not that stupid to go to an Apple Store and buy directly from there like a lot of people tend to do 🙄
Let me jump in here as what you have commented doesn't play out like you'd think. We did a big video comparing all Snapdragon laptops. What we found was that the X Elite laptop's performance was far mode dependent on the wattage fed to the processor than the specific X Elite SKU. The Slim 7x laptop that we mentioned in this video was the best performing one that we tested even with a 78 chip vs a chip starting with an 8. Feel free to watch this video here: ua-cam.com/video/gKjlzy7nhqY/v-deo.html
Not a ton of great 14 inch options for programmers hey? I checked your website, but between older platforms with poor heat management and battery life, bulky form factors due to being gaming laptops, or lacking dedicated graphics (even a 4050 would be nice), not really a single option that doesn't have at least one pretty big compromise. That Yoga 9i looks amazing, but I have grown a little sick of the size of my 16 inch Spectre, particularly when I want to bring it to a coffee shop and the like. I really wish I could get used to MacOS. Macbooks are so nice but I am so Windows brained at this point that I just couldn't get used to the Apple-isms after a few months of using an M1 MacBook for work. At least on Linux I can just customize the DE to match whatever Windows-isms I can't get away from. Might try to find one of the smaller Lenovo gaming laptops at a BestBuy and see if I can convince myself to just deal with the form factor. I suspect the battery life will be pretty bad though.
@@JustJoshTech Oh! This looks pretty good! It's a little disappointing that the latest Gen 9 model can't be paired with dedicated graphics, but I might be able to live with that given everything else seems to fit the bill. Much to think about!
This is the awards for the very best in category. For gamers, this includes 16-inch gaming laptops. We feel they offer a more immersive gaming experience. And our winner is still very portable.
Just bought one with 155h and OLED, happy so far. Great screen, good battery life, quiet, quick and premium build. Cons are mostly the ports, I'm worried about how long the USB-C will hold up for the power cable. A bit more travel on the keys than I'm used to too, but that's just preference I guess.
Hmmmm....good video and fine that you've given the award of best laptop to MacBook, but for so many people, MacBook just isn't a viable option due to limitations with compatible software. You should have a best Windows laptop award.
What to get for on the go webdev? The only good lunar lake seems to be the upcoming x1 carbon. That one is very expensive though ... The t14s gen6 amd appears to disappoint. The t14s gen4 is quite a good deal, but just average battery. It seems that the m2 air is currently the best linux laptop :(
@megamastah Exactly what I said. It was actually just as bad with Intel because of the Broadcom Wi-Fi cards in those Macs, which literally do not have open source drivers and the propietary drivers for these cards are worse than the proprietary Nvidia GPU blobs on most Nvidia GPUs on other laptops. I'd literally consider a Chromebook and use developer mode on it to install Linux on it before I'd get a Mac and try to run Linux on that.
Josh, thanks for this video. I went straight to content creator and I will NEVER EVER will buy an Apple laptop, no thanks. May I suggest to create a chapter for WinX64 content creator category, the ProArt P16 is hidden after the apple fanfarre. You should explicitly mention there is an WinX64 winner in every category!!!!. You should also include the list of the laptops that were considered in every category.
The state of Windows laptops in 2024 is just trash. I own an Asus G733PY, the 7945HX 4090 model. I also upgraded it to 64GB RAM and 2x 2TB Samsung 990 Pro in RAID 0 configuration. None of currently announced or released Windows laptops are even close to this one in terms of performance, and all of them are a huge downgrade in lots of aspects. Funny thing is, even though G733PY is powerful, it is absolutely awful on battery, and Asus being Asus hasn't fixed TONS of bugs on this device: wake from sleep, randomly non-working keyboard, etc. As a game developer, Macs are a no-go most of the time, due to sometimes needing very specific software, and lots of stuff has to be tested on Windows for compatibility with team members machines (e.g. native code, which is usually platform-dependent, winapi stuff in general). Knowing AMD, even if they announce new hardware during CES 2025, we're waiting another half a year (or more) for their devices to drop onto the shelves. Strix Point release was a flop and I don't see any reason Strix Halo won't be. Intel, well, I don't think I even need to mention Lunar Lake 32GB RAM limit. Snapdragon devices are out of question for my usecases at all.
Just like Super Mario Bros. 2 is the true best videogame of 2024, so are second-hand ThinkPads the true best laptop in 2024. Runner-up being second-hand Dell Latitude 5xxx series.
No. XPS 13 is a nice premium device if you can handle the lack of function row. But it is just a tad over priced compared to what you get with the Slim 7x or other similar devices. XPS 14 and 16 are a different beast. They really aren't good value for money.
Anyone have experience with the, Honor Magicbook art 14 ? (which has a detachable magnetic webcam, stored into the chassis & can flip 180 degrees to make front or rear facing) looks like a promising future idea?. *_Positives_* 120ghz (3.1k) 700nits (OLED) touch Large Haptic trackpad Good ports selection (2x Type-C, 1x Type-A, HDMI, Headphone) Metal construction *_Down side_* 3120x2080 Display No SD Card reader Battery life Price around £1000
@ What would you say was the major flaw in this thinkbook? The screen (matte / 570nits) and the speakers on top of the quality build are incredible! As light and even thinner than the Zenbook S14, I just hope a version with a 258V will see the light of day!

Another drawback of the MacBook for specific people is software and gaming support. Depending on your field, you'll often find that certain software, engineering for example, aren't supported.
Macbook Pro M4 Max has been the best purchase I've made as a dev.

Glad I could help
Excellent Review - no mention of the Thinkpads?
Sadge
😥
that's a sign to just build a desktop mate
I never seen single software to occupy 20gb let alone 100gb by default
MacBook Air as budget? Maybe in the US, in Europe de basic 13" 8Gb RAM 256 Gb SSD Air costs ~ 1000 euro.
Zenbook S 14 is incredible. Super-light, super-long battery life
and dog slow
and more expensive than an M4 Macbook Pro, which is like 50% faster. Yeah, pass lmao
@@RodrigoFerreira-bs6hd The thing is some people cannot use Mac OS for personal or professional reasons.
@synen sadly I can't fully use one either. I seriously hope windows improves their arm64 app support.
The best gaming laptop starting at $2.300 + tax is just hilarious to me. I'd imagine that most gamers are quite young and have quite limited budgets but what do I know.
Why should gaming laptops be cheap?
I would say they're probably over built but at the same time I can't justify paying the amount of a used car for a laptop
It’s the “best” gaming laptop not the most “affordable”. But I agree with you in the sense that gaming laptops are overpriced. I’d never buy one 😂
@@ipkislol Because most gamers are quite young and have quite limited budgets - obviously.
Tried the Surface laptop, bought the Yoga 7x. Just felt and looked better.
I just bought a niche laptop, the Tuxedo Infinitybook 14... I don't have it yet... But it shows a lot of promise. For 1400 bucks I'm getting:
a 16 : 10 1800p 120hz display with 100% sRGB, a Ryzen 7 8845HS, 32GB DDR5 RAM (upgradable), a 2TB NVMe (and an empty slot to add another one later), bespoke assembly, and options for my OS (I chose the "no OS" option).
Got a Asus g14 in part due to recommendations from Josh, very happy with it!
Seeing those prices of the Proart P16 in Dollar made me cry. Bought mine with the 4060 and 2tb storage for 2700€ in Germany 😭
Great video! Just a couple things I'd like to throw out there:
* You can now run Linux (fedora 41 w/ KDE plasma) pretty much perfectly on the G16/P16.
If the Surface 7 came with a lunar lake variant, it would be the perfect laptop
There are the rumors and i hope they will be anounced at CES. I only fear the price.
unless lunar lake doesnt use fan either ,it wont be the same experience and Id go with the snapdragon version.
@gabl4157 Lunar Lake will probably have better battery life and application support. All snapdragon laptops use a fan
@@sydguitar99 I have a surface 7 x elite and its the most quiet laptop ever.
Can’t wait to see what ASUS will do with the AMD processor and the 50 series gfx on the G14 next year.
Pretty much all we tested were just e-waste :)) nice one!
So the 16gb m2 air is normally the same price as the 8gb at least on Amazon since the change to 16gb by Apple.
A lot of business people use thinkcell, upslide etc. Would be great Josh to see you use thinkcell as a testing metric
4 years of Apple humiliating the entire PC and laptop industry combined.
yeh, when asahi gets better I might get one
I believe it's top of line for those that work in graphic design and development but I might be mistaken
its shit for anything engineering
For gamers PC is still better
Laptops maybe, but PC? You're chugging cope by the gallon.
I really love the surface, but I'm worried that some applications might not run
I feel like Samsung Book 5 could have made it in the flip category as it has lunar lake, awesome battery life and touch screen
12-core pro chip or 14-core pro chip? The 12 has longer battery is it worth it? Keep the laptop for 7 years, maybe I should get the 14-core pro chip instead?
I'd go with 14 if you can afford it but both should be fine
Guess you have to ask yourself which is more important, gas mileage or grunt? I went grunt. I think either you're going to really enjoy.
Most tasks doesn't scale well over 4-6 cores, many will only use 1-2 cores. Unless you know you have a need for the extra cores just save your money or spend them on added storage. Or maybe an extra charger, a nice bag or whatever.
I’ve recently found this channel and it’s so perfect, very impressive. Thanks for the review guys
Thanks glad we could help. We are working so hard to level up
How does the G14 with Ryzen 9 8945HS and RTX 4070 compare to the G16 with Ryzen AI 9 HX and a 4070? Would like a smaller form factor but don’t want to compromise if the G14 is significantly worse.
Please check our website, we have detailed notes on it there
The main difference is the G16 will feel much cooler to the tough in light use and is a little faster. The G14 always feels warm. The G16 is a big step up with Zen 5. If you get the G14 you need to be ok with a warm feeling laptop
@@JustJoshTech Noted, Thanks!
If you can handle the glarry screen of the Zenbook S 14. I'd probably lean that way if you are coding
Ok, thank you!
I thought Windows laptops were finally gonna get closer to Apple with Snapdragon and Lunar Lake, but then the M4 dropped....
Different process node at TSMC.
Lenovo Legion Pro 7, ALL day!
That liquid metal on the GPU and CPU, even with the 14900hx, makes a ton of difference.
Can't stress this enough :)
Ours gets very warm
I just need the Yoga Pro 9i with the Ryzen AI 9 CPUs. That would be a god tier laptop.
@@JustJoshTech Thank you. All the best.
Ditto, linux is very important in programming world.
Great work as always! What would you say is the best overall windows laptop? Basically the runner-up to the macs
Something Zen 5. One of the Pro Arts, Yoga Pro 7, G16 AMD, I didn't mind the OmniBook Ultra non flip. It is quieter than the Yoga Pro 7. All are a bit different. Check our website for their Pro and Cons.
@@JustJoshTech Wow thanks for the quick response! No wonder you guys are killing it in the laptop review space. Love the website too!
Of course this comes out the day after I settled on the Asus Vivobook S 14 OLED with Lunar Lake over the HP Pavilion Aero 13, Lmao. Though I guess you guys never reviewed that specific model anyway. Thanks for the list regardless!
Can you make a video about what is the best affordable laptop for architecture students?
I just orderd the vivobook s14 with ryzen ai 370hx 32gig ram and 1T storage. After this video I'm start to questioning my decision, but I feel like for my use case the laptop will be what I'm looking for.
It's a good laptop. Don't feel bad!
Unless you're gaming this is perfectly fine.
That is fair, we will do more of that next year.
@JustJoshTech sounds good, love the videos btw! I'll probably be getting the zephyrus G16 as my next laptop due to your recommendations.
Best laptop for Linux users?
there is none
@@SS-KZDefinitely one of the ThinkPads: P1, P16v, T16...
my favorite this year: Asus A16. 1250€ with 4060 and a 7845HX which is a crazy fast CPU.
zephyrus on top, although i kinda wanna wait for the 5000 gpus and new redesigns before i buy the current years G16 or G14...
I'm just watching the vid now but your praise of MacBooks had me order a 16GB memory MacBook Air m3 for 850 USD from Amazon with $150 of Applecare plus

Hi, I am from Singapore
I am curious that if I buy a laptop from US, what are the problems other than the different type of adaptor that I need to worry about?
Or it's just not recommended?
I bought the ASUS Zephyrus G16 with AMD processor. It's all in one.. pretty happy with it.
What is good laptop for java/spring boot developers running multiple docker containers?
Nice ranking bro
Lenovo Legion Slim 5 didn't qualify as "cheap" gaming laptop?
Love watching your reviews. One I've acquired that I would love to see you get around to is the Acer Swift 16 AI, it is pretty good!!!
Wish you'd looked at Asus S 16 OLED with the AMD 365. It seems to be quite underrated.
@JustJoshTech thank you for the reply, seems there is much researching to do.
The $2000 Macbook Pro M4 Pro would be perfect with 32GB RAM.
Is the Pavilion aero better than the Pavilion plus 14
Thanks for all the help!!! For you or anyone who knows, how long will it take for the nvidia 50 series gpus to get a laptop version in the future? Is there a known trend?
Would have loved an honourable mention of the Ideapad Pro 5 14 or 16 with Ryzen 8845HS
At least in Europe its the cheapest 32GB RAM Laptop with a almost current CPU and long battery life as well as high res screen. Costs 800€ for students (to compare to US prices detract 20% VAT so about 650$)
Lunar Lake Aura costs 1350€ for students (60% more! than the ideapad; also ideapad has 50% better multicore but only 10% worse single core)
ProArt P16 or P13 costs upwards of 2300€
Zephyrus G16 also 2300€
And yeah macbook pros well you know the prices
So not really good laptops for CS students who need good CPU, 32GB ram, decen sreens but dont really have money for 2000€ machines
Putting the G16 in the Gaming Laptop category despite something like the XMG Neo 16 which is *actually* the fastest Gaming Laptop? Gamers want speed, they don't want something less paying for more.
Have you seen our video on the Eluktronics version of this? Its one of our recent ones
I wish the lenovo yoga pro 9i 16 was a stealthy black color instead of light grey color
I think developers would prefer linux over windows. Maybe you can cover linux options, aswell?
I will call a good one out for that in future. We do test for Linux for laptops we feel are good for software developers
Please include a Linux option in your reviews. I believe many others, like myself, would appreciate it.
You have been of great help to me!
I have to buy a laptop by the end of this month and I really like proart px13 , what do you think?
I would like to buy a macbook pro but only when on sale. I am not that stupid to go to an Apple Store and buy directly from there like a lot of people tend to do 🙄
Does MacBook support all kinds of coding and programming??
yeah
15:09 none of the qualcom laptops uses x elite 84. So the 78 and the 64 are uncomapareable

Did you check the Yoga Pro 7 that we just added. That's a fantastic option for programmers
@@JustJoshTech Oh! This looks pretty good! It's a little disappointing that the latest Gen 9 model can't be paired with dedicated graphics, but I might be able to live with that given everything else seems to fit the bill. Much to think about!
Are there any 2 in 1 that have good battery life except hp flip
josh is on a roll! Almost a nee video every dat now :)
We are smashing it. Trying to get as many of our thoughts and research out for you guys
So... the Asus TUF 14, which won the list that you posted 2 days ago, wasn't even listed today...
This is the awards for the very best in category. For gamers, this includes 16-inch gaming laptops. We feel they offer a more immersive gaming experience. And our winner is still very portable.
Is the Yoga Pro 9i 4050 worth buying?
depends on usage
Just bought one with 155h and OLED, happy so far. Great screen, good battery life, quiet, quick and premium build. Cons are mostly the ports, I'm worried about how long the USB-C will hold up for the power cable. A bit more travel on the keys than I'm used to too, but that's just preference I guess.
Hmmmm....good video and fine that you've given the award of best laptop to MacBook, but for so many people, MacBook just isn't a viable option due to limitations with compatible software. You should have a best Windows laptop award.
That is fair and we will in future
What to get for on the go webdev? The only good lunar lake seems to be the upcoming x1 carbon. That one is very expensive though ... The t14s gen6 amd appears to disappoint. The t14s gen4 is quite a good deal, but just average battery. It seems that the m2 air is currently the best linux laptop :(
It isn't great on Linux; everything had to be reverse engineered and not much works at the moment...
Macs are not great with linux. Asahi came as far as it can with Apple roadblocking everything, as is tradition.
I almost bought the mac m3 , but 8gb and just 60 hz feels like a joke
can you comment on Asus Zephyrus g16 amd with 4070 vs intel with 4080
how much difference in terms of gpu power
I want your job. Well, ok, I just want all the laptops to play with instead of buying all of them
Josh, thanks for this video.
What about best budget gaming laptop?
We did this video recently: ua-cam.com/video/Sd0Pw9O2PZ4/v-deo.html
Just like Super Mario Bros. 2 is the true best videogame of 2024, so are second-hand ThinkPads the true best laptop in 2024. Runner-up being second-hand Dell Latitude 5xxx series.
You only show like 2 budget laptop and expect they sell in every country

To me it’s hands down the 14 core cpu and 20 core gpu 14 inch macbook pro.
The proart px13 doesn't even have 120 Hz refresh rate 😢
That is true, but dedicated graphics and an AMD Zen 5 processor in such a small laptop that is actually decently cooled.... is a big win
XPS didn't make the cut?
No. XPS 13 is a nice premium device if you can handle the lack of function row. But it is just a tad over priced compared to what you get with the Slim 7x or other similar devices. XPS 14 and 16 are a different beast. They really aren't good value for money.
@JustJoshTech what is lack of function row?
@JustJoshTech I was going to go with Lenovo but heard so many bad reviews.

Where is the thinkbook 13X 185H? Still the best laptop Lenovo had made and cheap price these days
We had one this year we definitelt did like it. Very high quality build. We just didnt like it quite as much as these.
@ What would you say was the major flaw in this thinkbook? The screen (matte / 570nits) and the speakers on top of the quality build are incredible! As light and even thinner than the Zenbook S14, I just hope a version with a 258V will see the light of day!
