In 2011, Mahler's "First," "Third," "Fourth," "Fifth", and "Tenth Symphonies" were among the works performed whole or in part by New England Conservatory's orchestras, during the "Mahler Unleashed" festival that marked the centennial of the composer's death.
Here, conductor Hugh Wolff returns to Mahler with this performance of the "Ninth Symphony" by the NEC Philharmonia. Wolff selected Mahler's final completed work to close out the 2014/2015 season as NEC's Calderwood Director of Orchestras. A profound contemplation of the splendors of life composed just a year before his death, the "Ninth" found Mahler at the peak of his artistry and embracing existence with all his heart.
