OH YAY!!! my mom in law loves these breads, and all the other older ones as well!!!! Going to make them and send some to them!!! THEY WILL APPRECIATE THEM!!! THANKS!
@1mokie I got it at a large American supermarket. Here in Madison, I bought it at Woodmans. Vietnamese and Thai supermarkets also carry Vanilla Sugar. It may come in a different packaging. If you cannot find vanilla sugar anywhere, you may use vanilla extract. The vanilla sugar adds a really nice smell to the bread. Good luck!
update: I made this recipe 2 years ago, didn't turn out good. The bread was hard when it cools down and it was not fluffy. I made it again last week, follow the exactly direction and turns out really good. The bread stay fluffy the next day. Today I just made again and this time way better. However I modified it a little bit. Instead of adding water and yeast/sugar all together, i measure same amount of warm water into a separate bowl, add the yeast/sugar into that separate bowl. this helps dissolve the yeast much better. Then combine them to the rest of the liquid ingredient together once the yeast have melted. Also I sifted my bread flour. Instead of heating in oven @ 100 degree for an hour, I just cover it and leave in oven for an hour, with oven being off. I find that the dough get very sticky when the oven is heated. Without the heat, the dough still rise too but less sticky and more easy to shape. after shaping and filling the inside, i let it stand in the oven for 20 minutes before turning on the oven to bake it. This takes time but it's worth it if you want fluffy bread. I bake mine at 300 degree for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. This way my bread is super fluffy and yummy and stays fluffy for days. Thank you so much Annie for this recipe. I can't thank you enough.
Thanks for the tips. Only thing i would do differently is separating the wet and dry ingredients, and like you said sift the flour and then combine the two. But i guess i wont know until i make it according to the video. Trial and error.
Made this today. It turned out delicious. My family loved it. We adjusted the ingredients a bit by adding the whole can of condense milk and adding only 1 cup vs. 1 1/2 cup of water. Next time, we're going to add more sugar to make the bread sweeter. For our filling, we used coconut flakes and it was a perfect combination. Thanks for sharing the recipe.
mmmmmm....guess what? my mom in minnesota made it before i did and she said "Thank you so much Annie". it taste so soft and yummy. thanks again Annie.
@1mokie I found the vanilla sugar by the baking isle with all the sugar (at the american store). At the asian store, it might be located where they have the baking powder section and the fragrant oils for nab vam.
I got it at an asian grocery store in Madison WI. It sells indian food. The food coloring brand is called SWAD and it is indian.
I tried this last week n the bread didn't rise much, plus after warming in the oven, the dough is still very sticky, so hard to shape it. I had to use lots of flours to shape it. However I love the results, taste very good. I used the green pandan custard and vanilla custard, it was superdicious, I just wish that I would rise more. Thank you, thank you, I can't thank you enough for sharing your recipes.
Thanks again for sharing, i gave it another try today n it turned out good, delicious! I have a sis n law who knows how to make these kind of breads too and i asked her a couple of time for the recipe but she never gave me it, so glad to have found ur cooking videos.....they're so helpful.
@maivxis28 You're welcome! I'm glad you were able to try it. Makes me happy.
@jaerinax You can use any custard filling. Usually I buy the Thai custard and just add hot water. You can buy this from any asian grocery store.
@hmongyanggirl I bought them at Woodmans. If you can't find vanilla sugar, use 1 tsp of vanilla extract.
@Deveus2000 I got the vanilla sugar from a store here called Woodmans. If you can't find it, you can try 1 tsp of vanilla extract instead.
Yes, the oven helps it rise faster. Or you can leave it overnight on your counter. You can also leave it for a few hours on your counter too.
@hmongyanggirl Yes the batter will be very sticky and it will be extremely elastic. When shaping it into a mold, I sprinkle some flour onto the dough and then shape it. I baked mine at 350 degrees in the middle of the oven for about 5-10 minutes. The time just depends on how many I have on the thin aluminum sheet. I remove when it starts to turn brown. Making it too brown makes it hard.
@1kashia2 I would suggest using less flour if your batter is too thick. Also, all your ingredients should be at room temperature including all the liquids and eggs.
thank you for sharing this recipe sister. i love eating this bread when i was still in minnesota. i will make it and share with my mom who has been looking for this recipe for a long time. thank you so much again.
@hmongfood
yes, but it worked now. thank you so much to you. you are such a nice person to share your wonderful hmong recipes. i think our hmong people should be more like you. ^_^ once again, thank you so much. i'm looking forward to see more of your great recipes. :)
@touandsoua Good luck with trying the recipe! Do come back and tell me if it works out for you! I felt bad for not using up the cans of evaporated skim milk and the sweet condensed milk so I usually make this size batch and freeze the cooked loaves to eat later on.
@lem0907 You can buy it at most asian grocery stores. Or if you have a Woodman's near you, they have it too.
Thanks for the recipe. I made some today and they turned out perfect. I couldn't find any vanilla sugar, so I substituted it with 5 tsp of vanilla extract (read online somewhere that each of those packets is a tsp of vanilla) cause it was a pretty big batter.
Imma try it give it to the OGs to taste it. They know what Long Cheng Bread taste like.
Use a good premium bread flour brand. For this recipe I used Dakota Mills bread flour.
OMG kuv pab hlub koj thiab os...you should recruit someone to videotape while you cook. I live in Madison too...I'll volunteer myself! lol. =) Thanks for all your videos. They're so helpful and I look forward to more delicious recipes from you!
Annie, thanks for sharing this delicious bread recipe.
I baked it last weekend and it turned out soft and hmmm... so very delish..
Hi want to try this delicious bread but I dont know that it will work for me but i love this so much
thank you for posting here...:)
@hmongfood
yes, she used bread flour, not all purpose flour. she also mentioned that the batter is very sticky, it's hard to make them into a dough. she did exactly as your recipe was written. i guess next time we'll try to add more water, see if it turns out soft. she told me that she only baked it for like 5 to 7 mins. but, how long did you bake yours?
@hLuBmeNoOg For softer bread, don't cook the dough all the way brown. Remove it when it turns slightly brown on top. It continues to cook even after you remove it from the oven. Hope that helps. Also, you can microwave it.
@PajTawgZoo I bought the custard at the asian store. They have a few different flavors! :-) Good luck.
thanks you so much...your'e very nice person for sharing this recipe ...i will try this recipe....
@maivxis28 When cooking your bread, take it out when it is slightly turning brown. It should be soft but not raw.
Thanks for the suggestion
@hmongyanggirl The bread is supposed to be soft. I would suggest to take it out of the oven when it turns to turn slightly brown. It may not look cooked, but as it cools, the top does get more brown. Also, is she using bread flour? I do know that all purpose flour will not work for this because it makes it into more of a cookie than bread. I would also suggest next time, use a little bit less flour or add more water. Good luck!
great job..you should make more video of other thing that we like these day...thank so much....
@SheLovesMakeupp It is Pandan coconut filling. I'll try to post a picture of it on my blog soon. When rolling the dough into a shape, I put it in the middle and then fold the dough on top of it. Think, stuffed doughnut.
made this recipie, and I think what she meant was add THREE lbs of flour to the mixture, and save 2 for dusting for a total of 5 lbs.
I added the WHOLE 5 pounds of flour and the batter was DRY....
You are very welcome!
@6urlnl3lue Hehe yeah, this is a sweet dessert so it calls for a lot of sugar. I hope me pouring it out from the bag doesn't look misleading. I only had 1 pound of sugar left in the 4 pound bag of sugar. :-)
This looks so good!! I havent had these in so long!! Deff. Have to make some after im done recovering from my wisdom tooth extraction. ):
Have you tried letting the dough rise a second time after shaping it? I'm curious if that is something that will help it to be softer. This is done for many American breads which help it to be lighter/more airy.
@tshavntujtwg I think there are several variations of this recipe surfacing on the internet. This recipe was given to me by my sister in law and I adapted her recipe to the one shown in this video. Everyone adds a different spin to the foods they make. I don't take offense in what you have stated. I understand your point and hope that your business flourishes.
ntxim qab kawg cia kuv mam li try ua seb puas qab os.
Kuv kuj ua ib hom txawv ho no thiab.
Hi Annie, thanks for sharing ur recipe. I made some last wk and when i took it out of the oven it was fine til the next day they became hard and even tho i tried to warm it in the microwave.....it's still hard. Is there any way how i can prevent it from hardening?
@hmongfood
i'm sorry to bother you again...did it matter what kinda of baking power we are using? i think my sister used the single acting baking power at the asian store which is the ALSA brand...you know the red small packages kind. anyway, i want to say thank you to you for replying back on my comments.
@hmongfood: thanks a lot. i will check at woodman, see if they still carry the vanilla sugar. does it taste sweet like sugar? what's the purpose of the vanilla sugar? is it just for favor?
@hmongyanggirl The purpose of the vanilla sugar is for taste and smell. If you can't find vanilla sugar, vanilla extract will work just fine as a replacement. I hope you try the recipe and enjoy it.
@menacebird Yes, you can add any filling that you like. Experiment and tell us what you like! You can try vanilla custard, Nutella, or something you like.
I haven't tried making the taro filling from scratch. I think you'll need to prepare the raw taro first and cook it, then mash it with probably some sugar.
thank you...cannot wait to try this!
@cattilicious Great! I hope you try it and share with your loved ones! Food is best when it is shared :-)
Where do you buy your powder food color !! I live in Fresno and check the Hmong store but they don't carry it!! The powder color turn out better then the liquid ones that I use..
@tyang76 How did it turn out?
Yum!!!!!! Thanks for the tutorial for the bread! Gonna have to try it!
I'm going to try it again today with maybe just 1 cup of water...maybe? Maybe that would be less sticky n better shape it? Will see how that goes. Thanks again :)
@hmongfood
thanks. i'll try it out myself soon...and i will let you how it turns out. :)
Awesome
hi my mom wants to know what type of flour you use ?
@MindyMLis Just add all the ingredients together and stir. The outcome is good!

@hmongfood thanks for the info.
yeah i actually made it the other day was a success :) thx !
hey, my sister tried out your recipe today, she said that the bread turn out hard...it's not soft like regular bread. so, is it suppose to have a hard texture or did she do something wrong? i told her to do exactly like you show here. plus, she said that she tried to steamed it, but it still hard..just that it's a little bit softer than the bake one. so i just want to get back to you, and see if that's how the bread should be or not. thank you! :)
