Nowhere as near as good as the Ivy League, do not mess about with a classic.

I just heard both for the first time and I like this better it's more intimate, but just personal preference. The song is a smash so any version will shine imo.

Totally agree. The original Carter, Lewis and Ford version is streets ahead of this.

Also there are 3 videos of Edison Lighthouse doing 'LOVE GROWS Where My Rosemary Goes. 2 of b&w videos of them from the British show Top Of The Pops & have Tony Burrows in them with the real Edison Lighthouse. The color one features an imposter group led by an Andy Locke lipsynching to the real Edison Lighthouse. All pretty cool videos.

Thanks! I was wondering how the guy in "Love Grows" video looked nothing like the "other" Tony Burrows.
That's amazing that the guy in that not only lipsynched the song, but wasn't even the real singer. Wow!

I understand Tony was quite popular in the early 70's, but he is so underrated. I think is song writing skills were out of this world. Even though he is getting older, I hope his music will be more recognized sometime soon! Tony Burrows is such a talented man :)

There's a great video of 'Smile A Little Smile...' on UA-cam. Band leader Tony Newman wrote some of the less known tracks and I think he sang most of the hits. As for Clem on 'Love Grows...' apart from it sounds a lot like his style, there is a website that lists most of the no1 records he plays on. (Though it also says he played on Hot Love & Get It On, which doubt...)!

Wow,, I never knew that! Thanks for the info. I'd love to know who all was on the record & involved with it. The Edison Lighthouse in the TOPS videos do a nice job with Tony.

That sounds spot on to me musicexpert2. I'm also guessing that the legendary Clem Cattini played drums on the original release. I'd love to know the other musicians on it - around this time Macaulay may have used Clem on the Flying Machine singles. He was also on Jefferson's LP from the same period. If someone could shed more light.....

@Palandy33 The measure of a great song is that it can be recorded by other artists eg Yesterday , My Way etc. This is a great cover of a great song and doesnt try to copy the original.

Good point, though according to his sleevenotes on the 'Flight Recorder' CD, band member Stuart Colman states that 'Tony Newman delivered a particularly strong lead vocal...' on 'Smile.....' Not conclusive proof perhaps but Colman is also truthful about the the bands input on the tracks - especially the asides - being very minimal.

Who is the fellow next to tony playing the guitar, wearing the black hat, he also seems to be the fellow singing most of the harmony in beach baby that was from the same film.
