- Led Zeppelin’s ‘Other’ Secret Weapon! The Headley Grange Phenomenon! Led Zeppelin Decoded #7
Hey, everbody!
Is it possible for a place, say a cottage, or a house to have a personality?
What was it about the English manor Headley Grange and the English country cottage Bron-Y-Aur?
What was so special about these locations, that Led Zeppelin would turn to these two properties, in order to charge their creative juices, and even record portions of 4 of their 8 original studio albums?
What were these properties to Jimmy Page, the leader of Led Zeppelin, and the man responsible for settling the band into a temporary home for the band’s living/songwriting/recording needs?
Why did Jimmy Page insist on moving the band into Headley Grange, sequestering them away from outside influences? Why did he rent the Bron-Y-Aur cottage for him and Robert right when the band could have been touring?
Did Jimmy know what he was doing?
These and many more questions are addressed in tonight’s video!

The Bottom Line
Hi Michael! Haven’t checked in for a few days, but just wanted to drop in and say howdy! Love your work on this channel! Hopefully, you will get so many new subs that you won’t be able to do “shout outs” at the end! 😁
I love shouting out to new subscribers, Helene!
But honestly, the channel’s growth has caught me a bit left-footed!
And by the way, I have never forgotten, that it was your initial ‘Share’ with Wayne that started this whole avalanche to begin with!
He got me to my first 1,000 and that started the whole chain-reaction!
THANK YOU!❤️❤️❤️
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine aw shucks….tweren’t nothin’. 😘. My pleasure! 🤗
I still to this day appreciate all 4 members of Zep & just being so in sync with playing together. Robert even using his vocals to bend with Jimmy’s playing.
I've been toying with a ship metaphor for LZ. Bonham is the motion of the ocean, Plant is the wind in the sails, Page is captain and navigator, and Jones is the helmsman who translates the captain's commands into action, mediating the power of ocean and wind. All of them are necessary to go on the journey. Which is all very flowery, and could only apply very generally to Zeppelin's output. Their dynamic as a quartet is fascinating and enables the creative power of their live shows. They are such an interesting band to study.
I loved your comment Susan. In my imagination I “saw” Jimmy at the time he was bearded, dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow… (sorry Johnny Depp!) instead of a bottle of rum, a Jack Daniel’s 😁
Hello Michael, I came here after watching a video of Wayne's. I have been a proud member of 'The Tribe' ever since. I have been looking for a channel like this for a long time. So, I appreciate your efforts and your sharing of your unfiltered knowledge.
Michael another show that schools us Led Zeppelin lovers. Your knowledge is beyond compare. Thank you, and look forward to seeing you Sunday on Royce in the House at 6:30 p.m. Pst
Sounds good Royce, and Thanx for your continued support, brother!
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Thank you for your support Michael!
HAY MICHAEL. OUTSTANDING REVIEW OF THE PLACES OF CHANGE... AND THANX SO MUCH FOR THE IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION OF OUR FAVORITE 70'S PHENOMENA... PEACE...
Thanx, Gringo!
Congrats on all the new subscribers. Taking off like a rocket!
Thanx, Dan!
You sure did a great job on putting together your interview regarding Aska, the Rock band! Excellent!
Awesome information Michael! 100,000 subs by the end of the summer!
Well we can dream can’t we???
Keep those positive thoughts flowing, George!
Incredible video!! Enjoyed listening to your take on this and as a life long fan I totally agree with ya!! You’re a cool dude!! Awesome stuff buddy !!
Mythical location. I love the dedication bands had then. Living together, playing together, laser-focused on greatness. The scenes in It Might Get Loud of Jimmy revisiting this magical place were just beautiful to watch. What a great angle to go with for this video.
You know, Bruce I actually experienced similar experiences in the early 70s, and it was sooo magical! And you do get an artistic kick in the ass, by approaching playing and recording music this way!
Thanx, bruddah!
Congrats on the explosion of subscribers, Michael. No surprise given your extraordinary content!
Very interesting spin on the two houses Zep recorded in. Obviously, with Robert's contributions to the band expanding, it was critical that he be comfortable in the setting where he created his lyrics. And of course, Robert grew up in rural settings surrounded by nature and animals, so it would make sense that he would fit so comfortably into those locations. Zep was so comfortable in that setting that they recorded outdoors, even leaving the sound of passing airplanes in the final recording (during Physical Graffiti).
Those laid back settings were also conducive to acoustic tracks....sitting around campfires and such. And of course, from Zep 3 forward, acoustic tracks came into prominence on each of those 4 albums you referenced.
Really great info here, Michael! Ty and be well. Ernie
You know, E, you get it!
There’s an almost romantic connection especially with Headley Grange and the band!
I just wish I had expressed that aspect in the video better! Hmm____ (Now there’s a thought!)
The closest thing to magic in the world is magic for me.
And when a place with a ‘Pressence’ like Headley Grange & Bron-Y-Aur, meet a band like Led Zeppelin, don’t THEY become the REAL Houses of the Holy?
Dude I am SO glad I subscribed. You have a lot of insight in these videos!
It's almost like somebody recorded my thoughts of what I think about what
you talk about, and we're having a discussion? I don't know if that makes any
sense or not? But I REALLY dig these videos! I learn something with each one.
Like a different view, that is similar to mine? Anyway, cool stuff man!
Thanx, so much Jeff!
Maybe between your angle and mine, along with that of the Tribe, we can all come up with a ‘tribal’ consensus on just what is good music!
I really like your videos. I was a little too young to see Zep live, but I was fortunate enough to see Robert Plant solo at the Paramount theater at Madison Square Garden and Jimmy And Robert twice when they reunited in the 90s at MSG as well. That was magical and I'm grateful I was able to witness that greatness.
You know M C, those concerts are now a bit legendary on their own, so you’re blessed, truly! I want to see Plant & Krause! Fingers crossed!
As an old rock musician l have come to two conclusions 50 years later : bonzo coupled with j.p.j. Was the worlds best rock rhythm machine . With that kind of floor the rest is easy. 2. The first album was and act of genius
Amen, Edwin! I agree wholeheartedly!
Hey Michael, now we all know the fifth member was Peter Grant. Oh and Jonsey defiantly a secret weapon but its no secret that Led Zeppelin was its own weapon that slayed the world from 68-80 and beyond. I like the spin you put on this and yes absolutely Headley Grange & Bron-yr-aur cottage was used for recording a lot of music that would sprinkle over the LPs you brought up and presence on these recordings. (see what I did there) It was a perfect setting for the band to focus on the task at hand, to record songs for new albums.. Recording outside or in a stairwell foyer they captured one of the most iconic and biggest album in rock , "four symbols" "Led Zeppelin IV" or "The Runes" but forgive me I just can't call it it what you do LOL ;). I enjoyed what you had to say even though I know the story well. But always great to hear fans talk about the band. So when are you going to do a live stream on your channel? thanks for making the video. cheers !! -VK
Hey Zeppearl! Good to hear from you!
As always, your take and mine aren’t too far off! Sorry about the ‘Z’ word, chief!😉
I agree that the fifth ‘human’ member would be Peter of course! But I’ll bet he never whispered in the band’s ear quite like Bron-Y-Aur & Headley though!
You know, there is something even romantic about Zeppelin and especially Headley! You can see the emotion in Jimmy’s eyes when he revisited the place in ‘It Might Get Loud’!
Zeppelin IV not VI
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Yea Jimmy did have this look on his face in the film like the memories were coming back. I wish he was inspired to record in Headley again...COME ON Jimmy give us something !!!!

Wow I just stumbled on your channel and subscribed. A Beatle and Led Zeppelin fan from many years ago, looking forward to listening in for some great music info.
Thanx, Edward! It’s good to hear from a fan who loves both of these two amazing bands!
I think you miss the point on both bands, if you like one and don’t like the other! Between the two bands, we got the very best from the amazing 60s-70s time period!
New subscriber here. I'm really enjoying your no-nonsense attitude and straight forward personality. Especially in regards to LZ.
This probably isn't that relevant to this video here, but I think the Welsh pronounce Bron-yr-Aur in a way that sounds somewhat like, "Bron-ahh-rye-yah".
I once heard a Welshman pronounce it that way.
I would be extremely interested to know if that is actually correct.
Plant used to pronounce it "Bron-rah". You can hear him say it on the 'Led Zeppelin Live On Blueberry Hill' bootleg from '70.
I can't wait to watch the next video in this series. Very interesting history, and you have a way of telling it so well. 👍
Loving hearing our home getting called the 5th member and secret weapon and I can tell you that the acoustic in here at Bron Yr Aur are even more magical than H-Grange! There's something in the 'Stones'.
Jonesi as the band call him, was A Huge Asset to the bands sound. His keyboard sound and playing, his strings on "Going to California", just an All Around Great Musician. Truly made the band so much better.
Well said. The SONG is the star !
Amen to that, AI! ❤️👌👍😉✍️
So many great albums were written back then in strange places. Elton John, Deep Purple & Juda Priest come to mind instantly. Then you get to bands who went to exotic locations to make their masterpieces like Rush, AC/DC & Iron Maiden.
It’s amazing how good the acoustics are in Haunted Castle Kinda-Environments!
Maybe that’s why us musicians are suckers for a good ghost story, Mike!😉👌❤️
Michael you are awsome!
Thank you, champ! You’re not so bad yourself!👌❤️
Michael. I live in Cherokee County Georgia and am right at home being member of 2 tribes!😎
I love Jimmy’s stories about Hedley Grange…..including his run in with the resident specter…….which was not pleasant. It’s actually kind of amazing that a cold, dank unpleasant place like that could lead to such incredible music. That engineer was genius too!
I think that it was the ‘haunted feel’ of the place, combined with their individual energies, that provided that almost indescribable quality that Led Zeppelin had!
Their closet rivals Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, though both truly great Mount Rock Olympus Bands, couldn’t quite capture that almost mystical & mythical aura that Led Zeppelin as a foursome had, Helene!
Besides, who doesn’t like a good ghost story?
I’m in! 😉❤️👌👍✌️
Though sab made a great one in a similar setting
If I ever visit Europe, these are places that are a must see for me.
Me too, Pipe! Them and about a 100 other haunted-but-record-your-music-here venues!
Around the same time Led Zeppelin (Page and Plant) decamped to Bron-Y-Aur, Deep Purple (all 5) stayed at The Hermitage, Welcombe Bay, Cornwall. Both were at these countryside locations to be creative; Led Zep 3 and Fireball resulted - both UK #1 albums. Coincidence! Of course, Zeppelin's trip went smoothly, whereas Purple's was chaotic, and that sums up the two bands. 🙂
Led Zeppelin is the Greatest Rock Band.John Paul Jones was unbelievable on bass with John Bonhan . People in a 100 years be talking about how great they are
Mikey, well ya,......in truth it is Peter Grant. He changed the industry!Yet these this 'houses of the holy' did give LZ a lot!Carry on Brother! 🙃
I agree, Kevin! Grant was one of the, if not THE, greatest mangers a band could ever ask for!
But even he couldn’t woo them like Headley, brother!😉🤔🫢😉❤️
If I'm not mistaken, Robert Plant's family would vacation at Bron-yr-aur when he was a kid.
Thanx, Mark! I need to look that up! I appreciate the extra info, brother!
That's true.
I would say RUSH had a secret weapon too in Geddy Lee. He sang, played bass, played synth, played taurus pedals,,,, All at the same time.
You're dead on. Love the channel. Zepplins talent of course got them into the situation where they could go off to these places to absorb, be free and create. But that's a situation, pretty much no other of the thousands of musicians world wide, trying to make music get to enjoy. It's frustrating if you want to make music, and you just cant get the boys to an old mystical castle in the woods, for a few years.
Amen here, Barney!
I say we pass legislation giving every musician a haunted-yet-muse-like-mystical-castle!
I’ll take two, please! Two!!!
Good stuff. When you gonna put on that black hat in the BG?
You said there was one other band that had a place that was a secret weapon. What band and where was it?
I'd like to add Peter Grant. As John Paul Jones said, "who gave us the freedom to do what we did."
my like is the 500th one!
nice production..maybe move your cue cards / teleprompter under the camera so its not obvious your reading them..headley grange had great acoustics !!
i do enjoy your work..we are from the same generation..listened to the same bands .... rock on bro rock on
Engineer Andy Johns used just two Beyer 160 ribbon mics on when the levee breaks.
I'm sure Headley Grange had an affect on what they recorded. I lived in a haunted house from the early '60s to the mid '70s. I could write a book about it, but to make a short story long LOL... We found out a few years after we moved in that a young boy had committed suicide by jumping out a 3'rd floor window in the early '20s. We already knew things were strange. Our dog would NOT go up to the 3rd floor. You could close the door to it, rattle it to make sure it was closed, come back 5 minutes later and it would be ajar. There's a whole lot more to this, but the point is... There was more then just the band members there.
Yeah, I’ve experienced some strange things in my life as well, Dart!
My childhood home was a Victorian two story home, and had a ‘Presence’ to it! 😉❤️👌
Would love to hear your thoughts on the Grateful Dead ;-)
The second greatest jam-band in history! Most would rate them as the KINGS of jam, but Led Zeppelin did pretty much what they did, in that they wouldn’t ever play anything quite the same twice!
So in my book, Led Zeppelin #1, The GREATFUL Dead #2!
I like your style Michael. I like to write essays but your channel is growing too fast to contend with you even reading this. I will keep it short as possible. What about Robert & Jimmy's travels to like Morocco (I think) - which is another comparison to the Beatles)? Or...Jimmy living in Mr. Crowley's house on Loch Ness? Oh I would love to go on about mic placement, but I will restrain myself here. You are now in the normal rotation of what I watch on TV. Thanks man.
You know Bob, There’s an idea! Exotic locations in Rock and their influences on the great bands of that era! Hmmm! Now ya got me thinkin’! That’s exactly why it’s called ‘The Tribe’!
I thought you were going to mention John Entwistle, who was a trained French horn player.
Peter Grant set the bar for band management. He ran things with iron fist. Remember in the song remains the same he went after people selling bogus t shirts? You see these people outside of any event. The shirts look legit. Cost less. But when u wash them they usually shrink..of course it's cutting into the bands profits as well.
Yes Challenger!
And now the venues, who used to be against ‘scalping’ tickets, now ‘scalp’ their own tickets, by charging $1600 for a seat right next to a $500 seat, but extra because the $1600 seat is next to the isle!
ARGH!!!!! I’m ready to pull what’s left of my hair out!
Ya they don't make much from records, cds etc like they used. It's the digital age so they make up for for charging outrageous prices. I recently saw Sammy hagar and the circle here in Ohio. Ticket was $125. The cost of a beer was $13.75. It was a very hot night too. But that was enough to keep me sober. Even in the 90s I was paying an average of $35 a ticket. 50 or 60 dollars tops. Only concert i.paid over $100.00 for was the rolling stones. But they are the rolling stones. Didn't pay that much to see the who or page and plant. It's a shame. I have no issues buying knock off t shirts as long as they are quality. Not shrink into baby clothes after one wash.
How is it you overlook Deep Purple when you discuss Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath ? They were the other band of the ‘Filthy Three’ AKA ‘ The Unholy Trinity’ but I can’t find a single mention. Good channel though.
Deep Purple is coming, Jason! I’m a one man shop, and there is sooo much to cover!
Ritchie is in my top 5 list of favorite guitarists, outranking Tony Iommi by quite a bit, and John Lord is my favorite keyboardist bar none, so their coming!
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine Excellent !
While I love both zeppelin and the Beatles. How about doing some content on other bands. Rolling stones, the who, the doors, deep purple, black sabbath, rush even lesser known bands.
They are coming, Challenger! At least 3 of the bands you mention here are among the 13 bands on my ‘Mount Rock-Olympus’ list, and those bands are still coming, bruddah!
How do you like Zeps version on "Babe, Come On Home"?
One of my favorite tracks, Rusty!
Holy pre-Honey Drippers, Batman!
Led Zeppelin needed no secret weapon!🍻
Howdy! I speak a little Welsh, although I can't claim to be an expert, but I'll take a stab at that pronunciation. I think it's "bronn err IRE" (as in the modern music industry situation raises your ire). It means something like "the golden hill," I think.
Thank you Sharla!
I was up against the wall to shoot the video, and didn’t have additional time to check up on that!
Wonderful!!!❤️❤️👍👌
Michael, Led Zeppelin actually had three secret weapons, the other....Peter Grant 🧔....No one had a manager/excective producer like Led Zeppelin until Bad Company came along being the first band to record on the bands lable, Swan Songs. Grant like the band changed how music business was done and recorded. YEP! Three secret weapons indeed(and remember a possible fourth secret weapons in the form of The Rolling Stones' mobile recording studio)🎸🎤🎸🥁🎹🧔⛪
Genre--subgenre means nothing to me. I write and play many styles. 19 note books of songs so far. I am like the musicians and bands from then, going in many directions, reaching for the all of it..

One person who was on the same level of musical genius as Mr John Paul Jones but imo doesn’t get nearly as much credit as he deserves is John Cale from The Velvet Underground look him up my friend
Bron Yr Aur is in Wales pal its a Welsh name meaning 'breast of gold'.
What about Geddy Lee?
Geddy’s a monster, G! Seriously! never fully given his due!
I enjoy these videos about Led Zep but the comparison only with The Beatles? What about the The Rolling Stones for example, they never even get a mention?
The Rolling Stones are coming, Raf! Fabulous band! And are one of the 13 of my Mount Rock Olympus list!
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine That's great, I was beginning to think you didn't like them! 😅 👍While we're chatting, any plans for a video on Cream? They had an incredible line up including the unforgettable drumming of Ginger Baker! I'd love to hear your take on Cream.

@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I couldn't agree more with you!
I'm a massive Led Zeppelin fan, but I have Headley Grange as a mixed blessing. Live in bootlegs & on vinyl sounded awesome but the Grange tracks on CD didn't really stand up from sound quality point of view. Floyd, Purple, Sabbath and Yes simply sounded better better on CD with greater fidelity.
Bron y Aur is said like "Bron-ie-our" in English. The y means of, sorry but it's excruciating hearing the mispronunciation, my mother's family spoke Welsh and it just takes a few seconds to check pronunciation with Forvo or with Welsh ppl online
The 5th member was PETER Grant
I think that what you noticed in celebration day about John Paul Jones is that when they divsnded he changed by Gaining strength by having done solo albums and growing strong wings if his own by the successful them crooked cultures, shut him by the way deserves a coverage ,right?
Hi, Michael. Just fyi, Ihave it on good authority from a Welsh speaker, that the pronunciation is, 'Bron Errr Ire'. Cheers from here in the UK.
In his prime could Brian Jones be considered the secret weapon of The rolling Stones?
I agree, Steven! Gone too soon, and gone before he had a chance to clear his head, recover, and show us just what this genius was truly capable of!
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I recall reading somewhere that Brian Jones was a huge fan of creedence Clearwater revival. We are really enjoying your channel Michael keep up the good work and blessings from Eastern Tennessee.

Four limbs of one body.
Difference is McCartney was one of the most productive song writers, Jones’s was not in that function in LZ that much. It was primarily Jimmy and Robert. Jonesy was important live since he was responsible for playing different instruments. This was not important in the studio so much. He was a great arranger though. It is just a pity him and Jimmy did not collaborate after LZ dissolved. I would have liked to hear what they would’ve come up with
I agree, Marisa, it would have been great if JPJ had been invited on the ‘special’ that Page & Plant did!
@@MichaelNoland-TheBottomLine I would have rather seen just JPJ and Page doing things together without Plant. The three together immediately count as a LZ reunion.
