- There are a lot of very hard to find manga out there, and I'm here to open up about all of the avenues that I use to hunt for and collect these rare books while still staying within a budget! In this video I specifically show how I tracked down every volume of three series; Gin Tama, Dragon Drive, and Strawberry 100%.

Currently in Sweden, finding a copy of the 3-in-1 edition of Junji Ito's Uzumaki has been proving impossible.
It's not available anywhere, except if you're willing to pay obscene amounts of shipping to have it sent from abroad.
I recently found just about the only store in Sweden that stocked it, they had one copy left.
The joy is immeasurable and my faith in life has been restored.

I don’t even own any manga and it’s hard to find what I want. I wanted to start with manga that didn’t have an anime adaptation, (mainly action and everything along those lines, but no romance stuff lol). Vagabond is hard to find and I can never find volumes 1-2 of Blue Giant (I’m a musician so it peaked my interest) in-store. Chainsaw Man might be my start.
@@wilfredogomez5505 Chainsaw Man is good, and relatively easy to find compared to Vagabond. You might like Tomodachi x Monster. Its only 3 volumes and I found it pretty interesting. Have fun building a collection.

I was fortunate when I collected gintama I got almost all the volumes at retail price or a little under retail all at once from a comic shop brand new volumes. The hardest for me was number 4 so good luck with your search!

I think the biggest mistake new collectors make, and I also did this when I started collecting is trying to get everything at once. Don't buy manga in order so you can read them as you go.
This is a huge tip. Don’t actively be reading a series you are trying to collect for. It’s best to collect something while you’re reading something else so you can take the best prices as they come to you. You will undoubtedly have less patience and spend more $ if you are after vol 6 of something because you’re about to finish reading vol 5. I made this mistake with ajin/ prince of tennis/ Monster. Now I just read a DC or Marvel Omnibus until I finish collecting my next Manga run.

Strawberry 100 is so hard to collect. I bought the first 3 volumes before they were discontinued, but never got the rest. I somehow managed to find volumes 4 to 14 for $3 each at a second hand bookstore. I'm trying to collect eyeshield 21 now so thank you for this.

I am close to having all of Gintama, only 20 and 21 have eluded me! I thought I finally had them but I had the exact same thing with Amazon for both volumes so I'm still on the hunt for both! Congrats on getting all of Gintama!! I got volumes 1-18 in a lot for about 120$ and didnt know I saw sitting on some really rare manga until now!! Great video, you gave lots of good tips for hunting!

I appreciate and feel this video as I just attempted to complete Yowamushi Pedal. It’s my first dip into rarer manga including Slam Dunk too.
It has three vol. considered rare and I was able to get two of them for under retail at instock. Vol. 3 however I gave in to a 90$ listing which isn’t the greatest but really good considering it’s being listed at 200$. I had negotiated some of those to 150$ but it was still a lot for me. I bit on this one after going down to 90 from 120. It was more of a 7/10 condition instead of 9/10 like most of the 200 listings , which even as a stickler for condition I didn’t mind! It’s fun hunting but these OOP vols were a new beast. All in all the vols. retail for 25 and including the oop ones my average with the current 18 vols. Is 19.95. Nice to hear about your ventures too and I’ve noticed your Yowamushi Pedal collection as well which initially got my attention.

One thing to note, is to probably not buy the volumes that are available on retail sites cause most likely they will be in a lot will other volumes that you need cause they are probably super common
Geez Dragon Drive......that takes me waaaay back. I remember picking up the debut volume when it came out when I was like 14 or 15 from my local Borders, back when they existed lol

I got really lucky with Strawberry 100%, getting the full 14 volumes for £10 ($14 us) a few years ago. But I have many others that I can't find like Kimagure Orange Road Omnibus #1.

I'm sorry this is kind of unrelated to the video. You mentioned being a Books a Million employee though. I've never been to a BAM but there is one by me... kinda, it's a 50 minute drive. But so is the Barnes and Noble (The BAM and B&N are 5 minutes from each other where I am). I was thinking of getting the BAM membership if they have a good in store selection of manga, I'm going up there next week to see if they do. The B&N's selection was okay, but it was on the smaller side so I'm hoping BAM's will be better.
Cause it's a 50 minute drive, I wouldn't go up there too often, is the membership worth it in that case? I've heard BAM's membership is better than B&N's cause they send a ton of coupons. But that's the problem, are they able to be used online or are they in store only? Cause from what I know, the 10% off is in store only which is a bummer as I would mostly order online.
Again, sorry for asking, I'm trying to decide between BAM, B&N, or Rightstuf's membership and right now, it's between Rightstuf or BAM.
@@shadowstar2194 MOST things on our oline store are already cheaper than in store. You can 100% use the coupons online and they never expire. Also, free shipping on every single online order as long as you are a member.
BAM gives in-store & online coupons, BAM members get automatic 10% discounts for in-store (including in the coffee shop) purchases & free shipping for online purchases.
Oh, BAM also does manga sales like buy 2 get one free or buy 3 get one free.

FYI Baki isn’t available in English aside from some Malaysian copies of the second series. Gutsoon, who published it previously in English, never released collections, it was just featured in the Raijin Comics magazine.

Volumes 7, 8, and 11 of Magical Girl Apocalypse are so hard to find
Thanks so much for the advice I'm a new manga collector and have been wanting to collect some out of print series but I didn't really know where to begin as some individual volume prices were very intimidating
I had both Bleach box sets, Are you Alice, Hellsing, Pandora Hearts, Black Butler, Cat Paradise, Alice in the Country of Hearts. I then sold them all off, apart from Pandora Hearts, AitCoH and Black Butler, seeing them now they're starting to yellow maybe cause I stored my PH ready to sell, but thankfully I kept them back. I've tried to read them, but find them hard to hold, so I was happy to see I'd started to rebuy them on Kindle, makes it easier to carry them all around and easy on my twig arms 😂 may even finish Black Butler through Kindle, not too keen on it after 14.

For me, the lack of attention to a series makes it hard to find, I don't even remember a time when Dragon Drive was readily available, I think I only ever managed to get about 4 volumes or so... let me check, nope. Only got volumes 1, 2 and 3.
Ah... watching this video just reminds me of the volumes I'm missing...
Since I started collecting, I became obsessed with Mineko Ohkami's Dragon Knights ( printed by the old Tokyopop from around 2002 to 2007 I believe, the non-reversed releases ) and I managed to pick-up various used copies at local stores but couldn't find volumes 23, 25 and 26 of the 26 volume series... I know that 23 should be an easy pick-up online but the prices for 25 and 26 are totally insane! If you can find them then 26 goes for around $100, while 25 can easily go for $200 or more..! That's seriously over my budget, I only spend about $40 a month on used and new releases, sometimes as little as $20 a month. I've about given up on tracking them down at a reasonable price, it just wasn't meant to be. It always seems like the last volumes should be bought at release... I'm going to have to order Getter Robo Devolution volume 5 because for some odd reason the local stores didn't order it? Despite having 1 through 4..?
So, for me, I tend to just play it as I go on. I tend to buy what I can find, when I can find it... but, I haven't been having as much fun lately. There's a lot of smaller series I tend to drop for no reason other than, this other print is starting to become harder to find so, I should buy it now instead of this shorter series. But about 2 or 3 years ago I remember finding the second volume of Fall in Love Like a Comic ( Shojo Beat ) which I hadn't seen in ages... but the copy had huge coffee stains on it and they were still asking for about $10 for it. I went back later and it was gone! It's unbelievable, a total rip-off because the stains were on the actual pages!! I do want to fill out my series but I don't like the store layouts, they design them for children ( as in which series are available tend to be popular titles and kodomo-muke series, maybe it's just the area I live in ) and are either too large ( as in they have self space but use it to hold 5 to 10 of the same volumes ) or don't carry the more interesting releases, often times I'm asked to pay full price or more for a "new" but damaged print and if I refuse... it still sells. Maybe it's just early nostalgia hit, I did start collecting back in 2007 or so. It feels like I have to switch to online fully but part of the fun was not knowing what you'd find at the store and walking away happy with even just a single volume. But just recently I bought several manga and a single "new" volume came in damaged because of how they packed it, it's frustrating.
Used most of these strategies to collect Air Gear and somehow fell ass backwards into great luck. Now the only OOP series I'm trying to complete is Ultimate Muscle and I've been able to get pretty good prices on 90% of it but these last few volumes feel impossible. Just got to keep doing the daily rounds, here's hoping!
I dont buy old English manga, so this isnt super useful to me (altho it did give me some more sites to keep in mind, since even modern English manga can be hard to find in these overbooked printer times), but it was still really interesting, and it was also extremely similar to what I have to do when hunting for hard-to-find Japanese manga/figures/anime. Very relatable!

This comment probably won’t be of much help depending on where you live but my boyfriend and I managed to get a decent amount of My monsters secrets from Books A million in there discount manga section. I really hope you find them, it’s such a pain when a manga goes out of print.

Collecting english manga in Brasil is pretty much a death wish, specially rare ones lmao. I’ve been trying to collect yowamushi pedal bc its one of my absolute faves but… it’s been tough considering shipping and out of stock volumes….

That's pretty messed up that store decided to up their price.
I would be careful with adding things to eBay watch list/basket if you aren’t 100% ready to buy. I added 2 rare volumes of an unpopular but out of print manga to my basket and after they doubled in price. Luckily I managed to find them for the original prices from the exact same sellers on other websites they were selling on. Sellers can also send you offers even if you just view the items so I’d say if you want to watch the price of something on eBay just keep the tab open but don’t add to watch list or basket unless you’re willing to pay. Also always make use of the best offer button. If the manga I’m buying is already less than what I was willing to pay I’ll just pay for it upright since people gotta eat but usually if it’s a bit over because of delivery I will make an offer that takes away the cost of shipping and usually it works.
Yeah, everything is out of stock right now... I guess we'll just have to wait for restock. Good thing most of the series I like are popular enough to not go out of print. Plus I can also buy in French, so more option.
Nooo don't tell people about Nan's, that's supposed to be my hidden gem! when you mentioned "stores with superheroes painted on the windows" in your starting a collection video, Nan's is the first place that came to mind for me :)
Re: the Gintama 21 thing; I find it so sad that reselling culture has brought us to a point that true and devoted collectors like yourself can’t even get excited about the thrill of the find anymore without fearing these bait and switch tactics. As a business, why would you want to create such negative, extortionate experiences with potential customers? I bet you’d be hesitant to shop there again, which is literally the OPPOSITE reaction a successful shop should want.

A few years ago I was trying to clean up my bookshelf and like a complete idiot sold all my volumes of Eyeshield, Claymore, Shaman King.... I hate myself 💔😭
I was looking for a pretty rare manga based on the ps3 and xbox game called Asura's Wrath. I looked on every manga online store and they didn't have it, but then I saw the set being sold for 150$ on ebay in good condition (has some yellowing). Now it's being sold on manga republic for 340$ USD each book (ripoff I'd say).

i've been trying to find volume 0 of jujutsu kaisen and volumes 2&3 of spy x family for like a whole year since they were out of print. i hope i can find and meet people who do such nice gestures like the one who did that for you. i was able to find the spy x family at a somewhat good price because people sell some volumes and ridiculous prices.
My advice for manga that is new/ongoing/still being printed but very out of stock is to just wait it out and check everyday. There is not much point paying over retail price for something that is sure to be available at some point unless you are dying to read it but yeah. I’ve also been waiting for spy family vol 1 and 2 but I’m positive it will come back in stock since it’s so popular so I’m just buying different manga in the meantime and trying to be patient.
jujutsu kaisen vol 0 got reprinted so should be able to find that on the cheap now i see them all over ebay
Searching for Bokurano Volume 3 is like looking for a strand of hair within a mountain of needles lmao.
None of the volumes I want ever get as cheap as cover price, like not in lots or anything. I’m hoping reprinting or rereleasing of Out of Print series gets better.
I did a similar thing for rave master. Got a 27 volume lot for $250 shipped including the final omni. Ended up buying another 28 volume $300 lot for just three volume to resell the rest since late volumes go for 75-$100+. I overpaid for a couple volumes but way under aftermarket price for the set

I had this with the 2nd volume of Vagabond here in the UK at one point the cheapest eBay copy was £100 one popped up on Amazon for £50 snapped it up. After that the next copy on Amazon was over £200 😂
I really want to collect Toriko and for the most part the volumes are easy to find with about 39/43 or them being original or below original price. 2 more are about 50-70 or so which is already a lot but it’s still inside the budget, however the last 4 or so volumes sell consistently for around 100+$. I really am committed to collecting this series but I don’t have the money to but those volumes and even if I did that’s way too much for 1 volume. I’m really stuck on what to do, do you have any advice. Most of them are also out of print
Hope you saw the whole video because he stated various times what to do. Just wait and keep looking. If you ever get hit up with an offer, just negotiate until you feel comfortable with a price. Go to stores. Use ebay, Amazon. Maketplace from Facebook. Wish you the best on the hunt!

The rug pull feeling absolutely sucks. I managed to find a copy of Basara volume 6 for 50$, which is expensive yes but, since that volume is impossible to find, I bought it. Got an email 3 hours later saying that the place didn't actually have the book in stock. So now I'm waiting for my refund to get credited. If it isn't by the end of the week, I get the pleasure of filing claims.

Yeah some shops have "treasures". Last year I found 8 copies manga (only vagabond volume 36, in my country so rare). I resell it with price 9x the prices I bought them

thrift books has it on back order for 18$ ish, might take a little bit of time to get to you but definitely better than paying the 80-100$ on ebay for it
Would you recommend buying from an alternate publisher if you cant find those remaining volumes? I was looking for a specific volume at ebay but only to find out that the publisher is different.

Do you know if there was English releases of Guyver? I was told Viz done one's a long time ago. I'd love to own physical copies of Guyver. It was a huge thing for me growing up.
There is, but it’s incomplete. They released four, maybe five volumes
