  • This is a review of a 2020 RAM 3500 Laramie Longbed single rear wheel with the Night Edition. I wanted to make this a follow up to the previous 2020 RAM 3500 Dually I reviewed to give a fair comparison of the tow numbers on a 2020 Montana High Country 377FL. #WeightWatchersTruckEdition

    Nice video. Having towed the same small 5th wheel with a 3500 SRW and a nearly identical dually, as long as I have a 5th wheel or camper, I’ll always run a dually. The SRW towed fine, but with the dually and towing up uneven, curvy mountain roads I’d arrive less fatigued. The dually is just more planted and subtly more relaxing to drive.

    New to your channel JB, great and useful information! I'm about 6 years in towing a camper and looking to upgrade to a 5th wheel. My tow vehicle is a 2018 F350 and the spreadsheet you pointed out is very useful in getting a complete picture of all the important numbers. Thanks and keep it up.

    Im anxious to see if RAM will get a 10spd to compete with Ford/Chevy. The reviews I've been watching shows a lot better shifting, less hunting for gears, smoother acceleration etc. Aisin makes great transmissions, hopefully RAM will get with the competition and go 10spd. Definitely helps with the gas mileage.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  4 роки тому +1

      I reviewed the Ford 10 speed and noted that the transmission was very smooth and you don’t feel the shifts at all. I’m sure the next drivetrain will see at the very least a 8 spd

      The rumor is that Ram, maybe later in 2021, will get either the newest 9 speed Allison built especially for working with the Cummins or the ZF8 power line (power something, I can’t remember) transmission. I’m hoping for the Allison but the ZF will be stellar and they have a contract with ZF for some of their other vehicles.

    Another good review!
    This setup is almost exactly what we are running. Our 5th wheel is just over 12k dry and GVW just under 15K. Pin weight is 2200 pounds. I thought the numbers for gear / passengers the truck payload is still light for how most I know travel - my hitch in the bed is only a 20K rated 5th wheel and it weighs about 150 pounds by itself. I have tool box in the bed full of small stuff / tools. Two adults and a medium sized dog in the cab and assorted luggage.....maybe 800 / 900....until we put another 250 pounds outdoor toys on the roof for certain trips. I'm good with single wheel standard Cummins / 68RFE, but I wouldn't go any heavier unless we trade up the truck .

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for sharing. I may be light because we are light travelers. Anything I can put inside the fifth wheel goes there. As you know I have a Goosebox and all my tools stay inside my RV. I’m probably about 800#’s over my advertised pin weight they show on line. I think it’s 1980#’s pin online and I’m around 2700#’s pin.

We are looking at that Montana...nice trailer. There is a TSB out now to help smooth the shifting on the Aisin trans in the 2019 truck. Going in next week to have mine done.

    Good stuff... I vote for the DRW Ram 3500. We stated out with a 2500 Ram. All the numbers said it would work with even a bigger 5er then we had. It Towed our 5er really well using a Demco auto slide. We bought a new 5er, 200 pound more pin weight. The new bighorn was now causing the warning light for the over weight for the air bags. We bought a lighter hitch, still over weight for the air bag and had trailer sway really bad. So, we had an issue, Ram replaced the air bags and the sensors, didn’t help. I just said screw it, and we bought a new 3500 Ram DRW Limited Mega cab. 5400# payload and 32,500 towing. Problems solved for sure. Very stable and tows like a champ. Biggest problem was the money I lost from the 2500, 70,000 dollar purchase to 87,000 purchase for the 3500. Would have saved a bunch of money if I would have got the 3500 in the first place. I will always vote for ver kill on buying a truck for towing.

    I would say dually. The other way to know if you have the Aisin is of you have HO, you don't have HO you don't have Aisin, because those two go hand in hand.
    However, it is possible to have HO without Aisin, so the way you mention is a good point.
    Definitely a dually when hauling the big boys.

    So I know this is 6 months late but I believe the payload includes full of fluids and a 150 lb driver.
    Also just some food for thought, my Cedar Creek dry is 12800lbs and right about 16,200lbs GVWR round numbers but the pin weight is 2200 lbs. Yours is 265lbs more starting out. Doesn’t sound like much but it is! 265x5=1325lbs of weight in the camper that contributes to pin weight! Heck that is about all I carry for cargo capacity.
    So the Creek with the traditional bed/closet in the front, if I loaded up to GVWR of the camper, The most I could get on the pin would be 2900lbs.
    So w my wife and me (above 150) is 275, plus 250 for my B&W hitch plus 350 for my extra fuel tank, plus my generator 100 lbs, tonneau hard cover 100lbs, at GVWR I’m at 3900lbs Maybe 4000 lbs for misc junk in the truck and the payload is 4165 lbs but that is at GVWR and I really run at 14,500 lbs on the camper.
    Point is with a front living for front kitchen or front massive bathroom, there’s a lot more weight on the pin starting out and almost all those types of trailer need a dually for two axles.
    But on the traditional trailer your can go to a 16,000 lb GVWR and if you just carry what you need, I run about 1500 lbs of cargo in the camper which puts me well under my payload even with all the additions to the truck.
    Also those Firestone AT tires won’t hold up towing. The HT tires will but I went to 295/70R18 tires which gives 4080 lbs per tire or 880 lbs improved weight capability and 2 inches wider fir better wear. Theoretically, with those tires which I call super singles could have over 5000 lbs payload. Just kidding. But you do get better wear and safety with that size.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  3 роки тому

      Great explanation. Now I’m under the impression that the 150# person is used for advertisements, not the door sticker. I agree that floor plans will make a huge difference on which truck to buy but sometimes loading something in the basement or under the pinbox can drastically change the pin weight on the truck.
      Some manufactures use low unloaded “hitch weight” numbers (17%-19%) but they could have potentially 3000#’s+ of cargo carrying capacity which could make an advertised hitch weight go from 17% up to 22%. This is why I prefer 16k or more to strongly consider a stripped down SRW or DRW. Thanks for sharing 👍🏾

    JB, where does the 21% calculation come from? I was thinking unloaded weight of trailer divided by the mfg. supplied hitch weight, which would give you about 19% for that Montana HC example.

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  4 роки тому +3

      Really good question, anytime you look online the numbers are assumed to be “dry” hitch weights, and some manufactures will say “average” hitch weight. Once you start adding gear to the trailer and depending on the options you pick, the 19% you’re observing is before you go camping/options. I will mention that this trailer has rear storage and the front storage is small but you can still add a generator to this rig, and the front storage is big enough to add heavy equipment. It’s better to go worst case so you don’t end up over on the payload. My trailer from the factory had a 1980# pin weight but when I got it weighed with nothing in it, it was 2200#’s and the only option that would have effected it is the front AC.

      @D.Wilson2 4 роки тому +1

    • @JB_WhoWork
      @JB_WhoWork  4 роки тому +3

      Just be careful with what hitch you get and if you can, skip the generator. Most people aren’t going to come close the GVWR and as you saw, this truck will work up to 15000#’s. I have the Reese Goosebox which will help keep the weight down since it replaces the old pinbox and you don’t need a hitch.

    I say always go with a dually. I'm a guy who believes in everything having a function. If you ever need to tow more you are going to need those duallys.
    The only real issue I see is that your truck is wider and you can't be really driving full time in a congested city. Get yourself a work van if you will be working in the city.
    The other reason is looks. It's a stupid reason imo unless you got the money to spend and don't care about hauling heavy and you don't like the dually look for whatever reason.

The second has 47K miles, with the 4.10 axle ratio. The difference in price between the trucks is $2K exactly. What truck would you pick? Hey Mike, glad the channel has been a good resource to you! What is the towing capacity for the 3.42 dually? If I remember correctly, some of those trucks had towing capacities less that 16000#’s so be sure that’s not the case with yours. I would definitely consider the 4.10 if you plan on climbing grades because the 3.42 does feel sluggish when accelerating 👍🏾

    Great informative video, JB. As for buying a 3500 for just cruising around, I'd get the 2500 with softer rear coil suspension. The 3500 is a towing vehicle especially when opting for the H/O Cummins and Aisin, as I did. I don't mind the tougher shifting Aisin, after all this is a piece of purposed HD equipment, not a cruiser. I would have opted for the dually for extra capacity, but it is a bitch to park where I am in southern California. I got mine with Ram Boxes, because I am now older and they are super convenient for access to tools, etc. I also got a 2018 Montana and love it. Happy trails, my friend.
