There are many stories of how they just wouldn't die when they put in the engine killer solution back during Cash For Clunkers. Every other vehicle would die after a couple minutes of idle, and be towed out the the salvage lot, but all the 300 i6's would go back there under their own power.

We are currently on our 4th Ranger. They’ve proven to be durable pickups with the exception of the 3.0 V6.
Our current Ranger is a 11 XLT super cab 4X4 with the 4.0L V6.
Before adding the K&N intake and the FlowMaster exhaust as well as a free flow exhaust manifold, I was getting 19 mpg on the freeway with the cruise set on 75mph. Now with the mods I’m consistently getting 23mpg.
We get 5-6 feet of snow every winter and our Ranger has never gotten stuck.
It’s now 12 years old but has only 35K miles on it.
I change the oil every 4K miles with Kirkland full synthetic motor oil and I change the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluids every 30K miles.
I guess this is why we get 250+K miles from all of our vehicles.
If I didn’t need the hp and torque then I would have opted for the 2.3L 4cyl naturally aspirated engine. Those 2.3L can get 500K miles easily.
Not only does our Ranger haul a yard of gravel, dirt and fire wood, but after the intake and exhaust mod’s, it now hauls ass too. 😁

The most durable engine in the Ranger was the 2.3L naturally aspirated gasoline engine.
We’ve own 2 of them with the 2.3L.
The first one we put over 500K miles on it and the second one we put almost 700K miles on it. Back then we changed the oil every 3K miles with conventional Valvoline motor oil.
We now change our oil every 6 months (which is only about 1,500 miles) with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil, even though our Ranger has only 36K original miles.
We change the oil on our Subaru’s every 5K miles with Valvoline full synthetic (high mileage) oil.
My wife’s Outback has less than 30K miles and my Forester just hit 13K miles.

The toughest most reliable workhorse truck I ever owned was a 60's 1 ton Dodge power wagon with the 383 hemi and 4 speed transmission. The one that was equal to it was an old 1 ton international with a 401 v8. I have never had anything more tough or that could take as much abuse as those trucks. We used our Internationals like tractors. In fact when we got a tractor stuck , many times we used the international to pull them out. My power wagon used to push through heavy brush and push over smaller cedar and pine trees and bust drifts. Can't do that with new trucks.

@Walt Moore you have that backwards. AMC was not producing many of their own parts. They cut deals with others to build their products for awhile.
I took a 401 out of an old international grain truck and put into a 1974 Jeep Cherokee.
I had a 1976 J10 that had a blown engine and used parts out of a Ford 360 to get it back on the road.
AMC in the 60's and 70's was struggling and using a lot of parts from other manufacturers. You could bolt Ford and International parts right in with no modifications or very few.

I always change the oil myself at 5,000 miles with Supertech 5W20 synthetic and a Toyota oil filter, never replaced transmission fluid. Replaced the drive belt once so far. Never flushed the coolant completely, but I've replaced a gallon or so a few times. I installed a new water pump a couple years ago because I heard a bearing squealing. Two sets of factory spark plugs, countless sets of front brake pads & rotors because they warp easily and the trailer I'm sure is to blame. I'll buy more old Tundras for as long as I can find them.

And they also manage to make even the pedestrian CX-5 feel like a sporty, luxury SUV for probably less money OTD than a CR-V or RAV4

We had the Ram V10 where I was stationed to tow things. We had other trucks to get around in, but one day that v10 was the only thing available for me to run tasks in. I hopped in it for the 1st time, started it up and pressed down on the gas and spun the rear tires. Like a kid who'd just found $5 in the house, I was like "ooohhhh shiiiiiet!!!' It was powerful and fast for its time, but it was heavy as a tank and when it hit bumps, you felt all of it. After driving it a few times, I felt it was best suited just to tow loads because that pickup had almost toooo much power in it when it wasnt towing extra weight. Basically a Viper engine thrown into a hooptie.

I had a 78 F250 Ranger and a 08 Ford Rager. My Ranger was a 4 cylinder and I loved it. Except for the Auto transmission which I had rebuilt two times in less than 150k mi. I've also regulary overloaded and over towed with it several times. The manual version is much more reliable and if my transmission goes out again, I'm tossing a clutch in that thing. I paid $19k for it brand new and abused the hell out of it for over 10 years and I never plan on getting rid of it. Also, it currently blue books for $7k and regularly gets 25 mpg.

Could not agree with you more - Ive got a dakota with the 4.7 in it and even after moving up several tire sizes it lost NONE of its power or throttle response. Crank shaft and cam shaft sensors were replaced and the truck is insanely reliable. Its 4x4 prowess is insane - I know I can depend on it at ANY given time. I have jumped hills and it lands like it was built for it - 75mph on Klevar 265s 75 15s on dirt roads no issue - 35 mph offroad easy - will not get you stuck in mud or sand unless its you who did it.
I loved that truck so much I bought a dodge durango - same generation with the 4.7 except this ones AWD and this impresses the heck out of me. Gave it a 2 inch life, 275 75 18s, 2 chamber muffler exhaust - also insane prowess in mud and rough terrain. Tons of room in it for taking the family literally anywhere at any given time. This also starts up every time, I should upgrade sensors while Im thinking about it - only weak spot is ball joints but I have spares.
At no point do I ever feel worried Im going to be stranded, or cant go somewhere because of weather. The transfer case output shafts must be made of tungsten or something - because you literally cant put enough force on the system to break it. Rock freaking solid. Ive owned rams, fords and chevies - I wont buy chevys anymore because of the transmissions but my trucks both have 200k on them and transmissions are shifting like they should even after everything I put them through.
Cant say enough things, I love that Im seeing more and more dakotas in my area where people are putting money and upgrades into them. I think I started a thing in my local town.

The 05 is an everyday truck and needed a transmission rebuild that costed 3k which was cheap around here for that work. I just picked up a 2014 f150 5.0 with 100k miles as my personal. Both chevy and Ford make some good vehicles. If I didn't see those chevy express vans with the Spartans box body get the absolute balls beaten off them and run 99% of the times I'd hate on chevys all day lol.

The Hilux is challenged by the Mitsubishi L200 also known as the Strada or Triton depending in region. This one is proving itself to be one hell of an off roader. There's also the Isuzu D-Max and the international Ford Ranger, a version of which is sold in the US with a gas engine. But international Ford Ranger has turbo diesels. There's also the Nissan Navarre. Along with the VW Amarok, you have a very successful genre of small pickups that are powered by turbodiesels but one that's absent in the US market. Toyota's line up of pickups doesn't end there with the Hilux. In Asia and Japan, you have the HiAce and Lite Ace cab over pickups. In some regions you have the 79 series Land Cruiser, kind of like the Land Cruiser idea of the Jeep Gladiator.

I have to say as a long time chevy truck owner from my 83 3/4 to my 2011 2500hd with many trucks in between i love them. My grandfathers both all drove chevys my uncle’s all farmers and loggers. We all snowmobiled ride trailer across the NE somtimes even go to the rockies. My father had owned many 5.3’s now with no problems that being said my 2015 Silverado 5.3 had the famous lifter failure. But i bought used first truck iv bought used in many years im 44 now so owned many Silverados. We all use them for hunting go off roading no pavement queens they get worked and dirty. Iv seen it way to many times when chevys get traction when others don’t talking stock trim here no mods. Iv taken full size chevy pickups places jeep guys wouldn’t go. Of course I could of probably taken there jeeps same places but still showed them up lol!! All trucks can break down but iv had really good luck with my GM trucks. My first car was a 79 hot rod camaro 450hp 358 with muncie 4 speed. Iv owned many camaros now my wife daily drove a Gen 5 LS 3.6 now drives a 18 RS 3.6 very fast for what it is get 23mpg average over 30 on highway. Very little trouble with the gen 5 or the 6. Sunroof stopped working thats about it. O ya had power steering leaking on the Gen 5 before we traded in. Camaro had almost 90,000 on it though can’t really complain both been great. But ya i know the horror 5.3 stories and there real but wouldn’t let that dieter me from buying another chevy. My 2011 3/4 6.0 lifted with ported heads cam long tubes exhaust and more. Had to unfortunately sell with 110,000 miles on it needed money. But i had the original breaks on that truck and spent most its life trailering something behind it. Ranger frames were real good until 1993 with the body style change, after 1992 Ford started making them very cheap. The S-10s after 1993 has problems with the door hinges and that wouldn't be much of a problem if it was a Ranger, they are easy to replace, the S-10s are welded on and it's near impossible to get them right, I had a 1995 s10 and a professional body shop gave up on trying to fix the door hinge and only charged me for the cost of the wasted parts. It was actually worse when I got the truck back.

This was at the time that S-10's were quite popular. However, it seemed that he worked on an EXTRAORDINARY number of S-10 pickups and Blazers. I once asked him if this was due to the number of them on the road, or because they were just junk. He paused briefly before giving the kind response, "Well, I don't think they made 'em as good as they could have."
