    After finding a potentially great deal, we will be attempting to rescue this 1998 Chaparral Signature 260 cuddy cabin boat that has been sitting for YEARS! We’ll be checking out everything on this cruiser, up on the deck, down in the cabin, and then we’ll pop open the engine compartment and see if we can get it to fire up after not being ran for a very long time! Did we get a good deal or is that boat going to be a huge mistake? Find out in this episode!

    I like ALL the content. As a boat owner, I have a few suggestions. ALWAYS lower the drive when you run it (the driveshaft u joints will thank you) and never run the thing without water and muffs on the drive. The sea water pump wont last 5 seconds running dry. You can put a new impeller in it, but if you torch it, you will be replacing the whole thing. At the very least, slip the drive belt off and just run it for a minute before it overheats. Good luck!

    • @jcbecker2800

      Also, if you are new like I was and you see the lower drive 'bucking' as the seller is cranking it over that's a clue the joints are bad/seized.

  • @michaelasmar5925

    When you run MercCruiser engines with outdrives, you should always lower the drive unit to reduce stress on the universal joint, especially when you test the gears. Good luck.

      Main reason so many are allowed to sit and rot away is because the owners are greedy asking for outrageous prices and would rather let them sit and rot instead of selling to someone who will take care and use them at reasonable prices.

    • @Youngberg1000
      @Youngberg1000 Місяць тому

      @@MsKinnara Give me a break. Many people fall on hard times, and trying to recover, their boat or plane sits. Before long your assets sit in ruin and the owner has lost all ambition to fix them even though they are sentimental and attached to them. So tired of this "greed" argument.

  • @adis7952
    @adis7952 Місяць тому +5

    Just so you know for future, never run boat when the outdrive is totally trimmed up, never run in without water because impeller gets instantly burnt.
    Also what i suggest you to do because boat has been sitting for very long time to reolace or rebuild starter and alternator, replace central bearing which is in transom, bellow for u joints and hose which supplies outdrive with oil so you won't get water inside the boat or outdrive. That was heck of a deal, only outdrive and trailer already cover price of the whole boat, im pretty much sure when you get it all cleaned up and polished that it could be worth 20k+

  • @RRRIBEYE
    @RRRIBEYE Місяць тому +11

    That's not a "Chevy" 350. It's called a *MercCruiser* and with the dual prop outdrive - that is called the *BRAVO III* with counter-rotating props. That was never used on the 5.7 Merc - What you have there is the 7.4 MercCruiser (454). Additionally, you never switch out one of these motors with one that's say from a road vehicle. Marine blocks have double the size water cooling jackets within the engine, because basically, when compared to on the road - this sucker would be operating in 'passing gear' all day.

    • @MotorboatToo
      @MotorboatToo Місяць тому +3

      You may want to look again... the engine in this boat is a GM Vortec style 350 (small block) engine. The valve covers give it away.. also known as... Mercury 5.7L 350 Mag Bravo III

    • @RRRIBEYE
      @RRRIBEYE Місяць тому

      @@MotorboatToo The 7.4 Multi Port Injection with the Bravo 3 outdrive was common on the Chap 260, however, the 5.7 260HP EFI w/ Bravo 3 was also available. I 'semi' stand corrected, lol.

    • @MotorboatToo
      @MotorboatToo Місяць тому +1

      @@RRRIBEYE yes... lol. the Merc 350ci w/alpha drive was standard/base. But Bravo III was an upgrade, however, It also had an increase of power advertised up to 300hp when the bravo III was mated to the Merc small block, supposedly with different camshaft and cylinder heads.. But I don't believe they were ever able to prove that number, so they called it 260hp. They used "Volvo" 7.4 with the bravo III as a base package when the big block option was used. It was still a GM platform even though they called it Volvo. I believe Chaparral had 8 or 9 eng/drive packages in that era for the various models. Competition with other manufacturers drove the charge for performance/efficiency and cruise speed ratings. Most of the manufacturers experimented with different combos to take the claim as.. "better than the rest"... Either way... it's going to cost these guys a bunch of money to get this boat reliable. Can't wait to see how far they take it and the cost involved.

Instead they rely on the use of correct components (flame arrestors on intake/starter/alternator/distributor, USCG rated fuel line, etc.) and the use of a bilge blower 4 minutes before starting and when at idle. if a rotary type electric fuel pump is stuck you can sometimes bring it back by reversing and forwarding current really fast many times over. Put some chemtool and mystery oil mixed down into the rotor if you can.

    Injector - my convertible developed a no start - it could be a 2 minute sit or an hour or more. Repairs shops were really outstanding they put the computer recorder in and one place said they did a ton but got nowhere so they did not charge. A blog told me some cars a little circuit that controls the starting process can fail - and the test was that on this car the fuel system and servos should start BEFORE it tries to turn over - so I just recalled those sounds. Repair shop doing oil said worth a try at like $28 for the part - and after like 4 years it fixed the issue.

    I remember there were hundreds (thousands) of those warehouse businesses all over Ft. Lauderdale back then. My first job ('70) was as a mechanic in one, working on heavy trucks and equipment. A speed shop in the one next door and a boat builder across the alley and three doors down. Typical rent/month in '70 for 30 x 40 w/12' overhead door was ~$35-$40/mo. - whole unit, not per s/f (concrete block & stucco - 'CBS', steel rafter ceiling.) 100 x 30 w/16'H door & 18-20' pre-stressed concrete roof (hurricane proof) was around $120-$140. I live in Louisville now and there is only one similar place like it (that I can find) and I've been on the waiting list there since 2015. Everything else is huge and/or over $4k/mo. It's tough for start-ups these days.

    The plastic through hole fittings are most likely brittle and may break off. Do yourself a favor and replace those. Make sure the bilge pump works before you get in the water. I can’t wait to see you water test it. That front engine mount looks rough.

    Just a small tip, you should never run the engine with the leg trimmed up, it is bad for the driveshaft uni's.
    Also don't rev them up on the hose, the water supply from the hose isn't sufficient to keep them cool.
    Otherwise great video as a fellow boat owner.👌👍

    I'm half through this vid - there isn't enough oil in the lower unit reservoir. That will cause a lock out / no start with an alarm. I have a Crownline - which is essentially same as Chaparral and it does that.
