    I used to be very nervous about what other people think of me. Someone in therapy told me „You could learn to walk on water and there would still be people asking if you’re just too dumb to swim.“ and that has been in my mind ever since then. I’m still nervous sometimes, but a lot less then before I told myself that exact thing over and over again.
    Also recently I read something along the lines of „The last thing that grows on the apple tree is the apple,“ and as someone who struggles with accepting that some things just need more time than others that’s really comforting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      oh oh I've been in a similar situation, i was almost obsessed with how people saw me, but one day randomly I saw a couple of other girls talk about how others see them and then it struck me, everyone is too busy to think what others think of them to actually think of anybody! And it has changed my whole perspective.

      When I was younger I had social anxiety almost the point of phobia, people in my classes thought I was mute because I never made a sound and I was physically ill every day to the point of vomiting or migraines out of fear of what could go wrong in any social interactions I’d have to have. Around 12 I finally went to a family therapist and I remember he asked what I was afraid of happening if I had to talk to people. “I’ll say or do something wrong and they’ll think I’m stupid.” His response was “so? So what if they think you’re stupid, who are they? How does it affect you?” I had no response. I was so obsessed with other people’s thoughts but I never realized how easy it was to focus on me and just not care. I know it probably wouldn’t work for everyone, but somehow just the statement “so?” really liberated me so much. I learned to laugh at myself and slowly became confident in my own abilities. 12 year old me, even 18 year old me would be amazed to see that now I not only am able to socialize, but I now love it.

The game has a girl named Es, she changes depending on the choices you make in the game. There is 3 types of answers to each question Es asks about you: ego, super ego, and ID.
      I finished the game and reran it 3 times to get the "true" ending. Once I did, all I can say that the only reason it was worth to play was because of Es and how she transforms from an apathetic girl, into a girl who is very empathetic and appreciatetive of you.

    I was best friends with this girl for many years, but then I moved away for high school and we drifted apart. We both developed severe mental health issues, and both went into recovery all around the same time. We ran into each other a few years later and I cried because I felt so horrible for not talking to her like I used to. And she said, "It's okay, don't cry. Our friendship served its purpose."
    I had never thought of it that way. I thought that true friends would always keep in contact and meet each other often. Because she said that, I've felt more at peace with my past relationships that have dwindled. I think that just from seeing her that day and talking to each other about it, we both were encouraged. And now, we both are living much happier, without being hospitalized :-)

      I don't and honestly for some reason I'm sad. This may seem fake or stupid idk, but I just thought about this for a while and my dad's the reason why I'm like that. I mean there's other factors, but my dad kind of set up my whole life in a way. It probably had to due with the fact that I am LITERALLY the only girl in the family that's alive, but... It's saddening right now. He would always tell me how to act in public (even though I was literally doing nothing but having my arms crossed because I'm awkward in public)... He would also judge my style, whenever I wore certain clothes he would say that that doesn't look good on me. The worst thing right now though is that he criticized me on something that really changed my life... I have natural curly hair and my happy type makes my hair just frizzy normally. I don't think he ever understood this, because he would always make comments about it and to this day I am always being paranoid about it. No matter how many compliments in the day I get, I can never appreciate these things... hahaahha

      Cactus Scree I worry as well. I'm turning 20 in June and I have a chronic illness that can be quite debilitating, even though on the outside I look like a normal healthy teenager. I've learned I can't take the good days for granted. Many times when my illness is particularly bad, there's nothing that I can do other than lay around the house, and every day that goes by like that, I feel like is a complete waste of time. But there's not much I can do about that. So on days when I'm feeling stable I make sure to do something that I can't always do, even if it's just going out to lunch with a friend. But I often just lay around sick feeling absolutely useless and it sucks. I guess once you get to be our age you actually start to realize how fast time goes. A year suddenly feels so short whereas when we were kids it felt like eternity. I don't know where I'm going with this, guess I'm just somewhat venting. I'll get off my soap box now. But just know you're not alone, I think many people are in the same boat. Time is scary and so is growing up.

    Personally I've had two big realisations;
    1) The brain takes the path of least resistance. If you wanna make sure you do something, make it as easy as possible to do. Automate everything you possibly can.
    2) Two things: very little is biologically innate. We are mostly born blank slates. And everything is a skill. All skills become more proficient with practice. What you practice, you strengthen, and get better at (in scientific terms; myelineation). And when I say EVERYTHING is a skill I mean it. If I say to myself "I'm gonna skip group this week bc it's been such a busy week" I've practiced excusing myself out of skipping group, and it therefore becomes easier next time to skip group. And so on.

      Actually no. Let's say you are carrying boxes to the third floor of a building, and you could either take the stairs or the elevator. The elevator will always take 2 minutes. The first box you pick up is light. You can run up the stairs with the box in about 30 seconds. This would save more time and would not take excessive effort therefore it is much more efficient than taking the elevator. However, suppose there is also a heavy box. Walking up the stairs with the heavier box would excessive effort and take much longer than the elevator, therefore the elevator is the more efficient choice. Sometimes the easiest choice is the most efficient.

    • @Mostlyharmless1985
      @Mostlyharmless1985 5 років тому +60

      Aman Bytheway actually those are the situations where it rings the most true.
      A person falsely imprisoned can do nothing about their imprisonment. It’s not their fault. But, they can change how their situation will be for them by their attitude. They can lash out and get in worse trouble and catch a prison sentence they deserve, or they can maintain their innocence and work to improve it, and work inside the means they have to make the best of their situation.
      A disabled person can no more control their disability than they can make the sky purple, they can be miserable and feel sorry for themselves about their disability, or they can work inside the limits they have to live a happy life.
      A person who has a terminal illness has the same issue. They can be miserable for the time they have left or make the best of what they have.
      An enslaved person can accept their enslavement as something they can deserve, or fight for their freedom even if it means risking their life. They are choosing that freedom is worth more than life.
      A child who is abused can let their situation rule them, believing that their treatment is that they deserve, that they are worthless and what they have is too much, or they can understand and believe that they are a human being of worth and dignity, and that their abuse is not acceptable.
      A person who is raped can live in constant fear of their situation, being a victim that lets that horrible moment rule their entire life, or they can be a survivor, and live their life in spite of the trauma.
      If you have your house burn down, you can despair and wail at the unfairness of the entire situation, that your entire life is destroyed, or you can sift the ashes and pick up what you can and move along, building a new life.
      Your murder example is an edge case. It’s not like you can change being dead, or that a dead person can be made alive again.
      Life happens to you. Most of it you can not control, the only thing you have 100 percent control over is your attitude, and use that as a tiller to steer you in the direction you want to go.

    In my dream, I was sitting on a rock with my friends while looking at the ocean and said “look around guys. This is going to be a great memory one day”

    No one said this to me but I heard it somewhere and have never forgotten this. 'One small crack does not mean that you are broken, it means that you were put to the test and didn't fall apart', I now have it on a board in my bedroom. I have several mental scars from serious mental health issues and suffer from anxiety and depression to this day but it is getting better. I heard it at the right moment when I was in a toxic environment and my mental health and self confidence were taking a massive battering. I have left the toxic environment and am finally becoming happy again but am certainly not fully recovered but I think some of the effects will most likely be long lasting (I left nearly a year ago). I may have cracked but I am still going because I didn't let myself fall apart. Its the words I now live by

    I told myself this back when I was on my fitness journey. “If you didn’t believe you could do it, then you wouldn’t have started.” I didn’t hear it anywhere, but it came to my mind one day. Sometimes we forget our own strength and become lost, but this quote always gets me through

    This quote completely changed my life and helped me and my confidence so much...
    “If you had a friend who spoke to you the way you sometimes spoke to yourself, how long would you allow that person to be your friend?”
    It was one of the most eye opening things ever, and it taught me to be more positive, and to be happier with who I am as a person. I thought I would share it because it completely changed my point of view, and I hope it can help someone else too :)

    My mom once said this to me (it was in portuguese, im going to "translate" the best that I can). Never remind other people the good you made for them, but never forget the good they made for you.

    This reminded me of a time when my teacher had made a mistake and a student corrected her on it. And she said “thanks, i know everyone makes mistakes, but if that’s the only mistake i make today, then I’m gonna have a pretty good day.” That hit me with a sense of knowing i can always do better.
    (Edit): another thing is, from me, don’t practice until you get it right, practice until you can’t get it wrong.
