  • BMW R1250GS features the new ShiftCam technology that brings more mid-range torque power: 143 NM and 136 HP (compared to the 125 NM, 125 HP figures for the R1200GS). But is it enough to beat the thrill-seeker KTM 1290 Super Adventure S (160 hp)? We took both of them to the race-track to find out. Place your bets!

    Very nice guys, congrats, you are often providing very interesting content (and i am one who criticized you when you did not😊) I believe the hp difference on a race track makes a lot of difference way more than it would in the road so this proves something but possibly just half of the story. Great compare guys - really nice ride and drone footage - would be fun to compare these again this time with the same track day tires and push them a bit - I often group ride with my RR rider brothers and have been able to keep them in site with my R1200GSA with Metzeler's Karoo Streets (very sticky & precise - though very short-lived rear) - always amazed at how well the GS handles with good tires! Currently testing Michelin's new Anakee Adventures (very sticky though less precise, handles rocks better off-road though) Again, thanks so much for all you do!

      Why? If you want a adventure bike capable of on and off road, why would you not want the best of both worlds? This review helped me in my adventure bike purchase decision a lot! The KTM is a master at both I feel, and unlike most adventure bikes, this has everything i am looking for, sports bike performance, and dirt bike rugged aggression for off road!

    • @wileym
      @wileym 4 роки тому +24

      On road? Yes.
      Off Road? Yes.
      Race track? Non.
      Why do you care what the top end on a track is when it's unlikely you'll ever go there?
      Adventure bikes need decent road manners, decent mileage and range and good off road manners.
      How fast you can hang a knee seems irrelevant.
      I'd rather have the 790.
      I'll bet the BMW gets better miles per repair too.
      The S1000XR would blow both of them off the track and still manage some trail riding.

    • @bewaretheclaw
      @bewaretheclaw 4 роки тому +11

      @@wileym Well sir, to be honest I want to know the full capabilities of anything, if your searching for a vehicle that is supposed to be top performance on road and top performance off, wouldn't you want to know the limits and have full understanding of what your driving? I'm a huge motorcycle and vehicle enthusiast and also a mechanic, I love to hear the engine roar and see it pushed to its limits that way I KNOW what I have! We all have our preferences sir, that's just me. If you have a gaming laptop you want to know how much you can crank up the graphics settings, same with good sounding home theater system, goes for anything.

    • @wileym
      @wileym 4 роки тому +1

      @@bewaretheclaw Not so much.
      The only bikes I have wound out to the maximum were Harleys I had modified to go faster. And a couple of small bikes.
      Most other bikes are already capable of going far faster than I have any wish to go and handle way better than I can use so, no, I only need to know that they will do what I personally want them to do.
      I know my home theatre will blow my eardrums out. I don't need to actually play it that loud to prove the point.
      As for gaming, that's the equivalent of a dedicated track bike. You can do a track day on a moped. It doesn't really belong there any more than an adventure bike.

    I have rode both bikes and the BMW is fast in the sense that number change quite fast on the speedometer but KTM is fast in the sense you are constantly popping front wheel and spinning the rear tire :D And KTM has even more "usable" power since it vibrates so much that you have to always keep over 3000 rpm on the clock so you end up riding one gear smaller than on the bmw, and the top end is also just as usable power as anything else, the gearbox is there for a reason :D

    This is why real adventure riders are going more and more for middle and lightweight bikes with more agility and less power.
    Adventure bikes belong in the wilderness, not on a track and the more track ready they become, the less off road capable they become at the same time.
    They become more work and less fun except on dry, well surfaced roads.
    BMW is selling more and more of their middleweight bikes and now with the G310GS people are going to start working with that platform. Rally Raid already makes a full off-road conversion kit for it. Get it a larger tank and it could go around the world.
    I wouldn't be surprised to bee BMW bump that to the mid 400s and sell a ton of them.
    This high power race is so totally counter what adventure riding is all about.

      You are somehow right on the off road capabilities and adequacy for RTW trips, a lighter weight bike will save you much trouble and make your life much easier. However, this "arms race" between the big trail bikes, IMO, started in earnest with the 2010 Ducati multistrada, who dared put a superbike engine in a trail bike, and the ms is such a magnificent bike, it would be a crying shame if it hadn't existed. I tell you, I have a multistrada, (my 5th big bike after my 1st ever, a 125cc Casal), I just can't put words to how much fun this bike is.
      But yes, if I ever do a RTW trip, (an old dream of mine), I will take a 450 to 650 trail bike, then it's all left to the tyre choice.

    I’m surprised the BMW wheels survived, that’s been a huge problem lately

    Thanks for the video guys. Strange but good to see these bikes compared this way. Would be interesting to see the GS perform with chain drive as the paralever has some efficiency loss. I do like not having to deal with the chain.

    I think this is a fun comparison if only for the reason that both bikes are bloody amazing allrounders. I also love all the brand banta in the comments, boys will be boys hehe. I just upgraded my 1190 Adventure to a 1290SAS and waiting for it to arrive; would have happily gone with the GS if the deal wasn't so good with KTM!

    I love the Beemer for it's outstanding touring comfort and all around credentials... it really is good at almost everything (it's what I rent when I'm in the Germany and the weather is good enough for riding)... but it's not fast like the KTM is fast. The Beemer runs out of breath too early - right when my Multistrada is just getting into the power the Beemer is going flat and asking you to shift, (and the KTM is very close to the 1260 Multi... bit stronger in the midrange where the Multi is strong off idle and at the top end). The Beemer is actually right with them at the low and into the start of the midrange... but after that it's goodbye GS.

    I had a gs in the montains of france for a while, if you want to test a motorbike on a circuit with long curves use a racing motorbike. If you want to test a motorbike on small mountain roads balancing from one side to the other in second then take the gs. This bike is a dream , amazing torque , gravity center so low that you just need your knees to drive it, incredible suspensions securing your path over bad asphalt. No sport bike will challenge you there, believe me, I talk from experience.

    Interesting comparison, however being ADVENTURE (not racing) monster bikes, I'd be more interested to know how they both perform on a NORMAL on-road and off-road ride.
    And not really interested to know how much maximum power a bike may give you at 9K RPM, but rather how much and HOW IT'S BEING DELIVERED that power at a normal usage RPM (up to 4-5K).
    Anyways, thanks for sharing this video.

      I can give you a good answer🙂
      Michelin Road 5 Trail.
      It was launched in the end of 2018, and is specially developed for these bikes (they used the ktm as the test bike).
      Michelin say it is pretty much an all tarmac tire, and the grip is just unbelievable😀
      My favourite tarmac tire prior to this one was the Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2, but the Road 5 Trail is better.

      KTM's are a bit more unstable at high speeds. Longer suspension travel and conventional forks/shocks (compared to para/telelever) are more setting-sensitive than BMW's setup. Had both types (990R vs 1200GS).

    I love your content but I don't think these two bikes are meant for spirited riding or racing. We already have so many segments of bikes that are made just to do that, super-naked's, hyper-naked's, super bikes, hyper bikes, track only bikes like the HP4 and so on. Most people buy the GS, Tiger, SAR or Multistrada for crossing continents. Still if you wanted you could have brought the BMW S1000XR, which competes directly with the 1290. Just my two cents, not hating in any way. Keep up the great work!

      Amrit Swain i dont agree. I have seen a lot of people on these that ride fast and shoot past guys on full race bikes on the street. Even though they are going fast as well. Talking to a lot of riders on these, they are former or still circuit racers but their body just cant handle the driving position on those anymore. That is why they got one of those. So they like it that they still can go fast on these bikes.

    This was not really a suprice to me, the KTM is a BEAST.. How ever this kind of bikes is made for long distance touring with some adventure riding and preferably with as good comfort as possible and thats when the "Bimmer" shines.. And the tourqe i just right for road use on the BMW, you almost dont need to change gears :) .. I just traded my KTM 1290 for an R1250 GSA mostly for better comfort but also for alot better quality over all and even though i miss the KTM sometimes it feels like i made the right choice.. If i wanna go on a track i'll go on a ZX10-R.

    • @MrEunuch

      Agree.
      Funny, just traded my 1290 SAS after almost 2 years back to the 1250 GS (been a long time GS fan too) because of buffeting on the KT/general comfort/height on the GS. Will I miss the KTM at times? Yes. It's an awesome bike and anyone who owns either of these won't be disappointed. More a case of whats your favourite flavour

  • @762N8O

    I own a KTM adventure and agree about track times or even off road prowess. The GS wins in the resale and comfort.
    I love my Adventure but you can't ride it easy and kick back. It is a high maintenance beast that hates going slow.
