The bridge scene was shot in the Florida keys on the old seven mile bridge, the explosion was a miniature set though. Also that jet can actually take off straight upwards; they're called VTOL (vertical take off - landing) jets. One of my favorite old school action movies alongside Commando and the Rambo series!
There used to be a magazine that covered how movies were made and the issue for True Lies was huge (sorry I can't remember the name of the magazine). For example, the jet was a prop with an attachment to the top of the tail so they actually filmed the sequences on location but you never see the tail when Arnold's in the shot. The takeoff, the scenes on the building - yes they actually had that prop hanging off of a Miami high rise.. Very high budget. Good review job.
Ralphie, over at the UA-cam-channel Cenemassacre is absolutely right when he says that True Lies is the peek of Mount Schwarzenegger. It never got any bigger or as good. 👍
Arnold and Jamie's arms were wired together, but she actually did that swing from the falling car to the helicopter. Thats a real scream of terror; the wire wasn't enough to make her feel safe dangling up in the air like that. Go Jamie Lee Curtis!
ok there are 2 stories here though. the isometric shot of the limo splashing down as they pull her from the car is both jamie's stunt double and arnold's stunt double. the top-down shot from "inside" the helicopter is actually jamie lee curtis. they are 2 completely different takes just to help make the movie more magical, so when you see people say "JLC actually did that stunt" it's a little like... meh. the stuntwoman did the actual stunt where the car went off the bridge. JLC did the stunt where they needed to see her face for the trailer hype.
He was phenomenal in it, the perfect comedic foil to Arnie. And you can't deny the chemistry they had together. I totally believe they we're best friends. This movie just rules on all levels
Sometimes movies spiral out of control. In others there's a scene that's just too much and breaks it. Cameron went into this knowing he would crank it all the way to 11 and decided to have fun with the concept.
"Over the top, but I'm here for it!" - Best summary of everyone's love affair with this movie. It's a straightforward action blockbuster with all of the trappings that make for a true re-watch classic. Really fun reaction bro, keep up the great work!
Cameron's knack for inserting comedy into action is close to perfect in this movie. Guards closing in? Let's tango! Gunfight with terrorists? Put it in a bathroom! Chase scene? Arnold's on a horse! Brutal interrogation imminent? "My handcuffs? I picked them..." Amazing use of trope subversion and raising the stakes throughout. He never gets this close to pure comedy again, but that's fine with me. It's a gem among his amazing filmography.
The Hawker Harrier "Jump Jet" can indeed hover mid-air and take off and land vertically. A British plane that the US Marines use as well. Not sci-fi but good old 60's tech. ;)
I was about to correct you saying 'Hawker' because I've never heard it called that but I realised it's the manufacturer (Hawker Siddeley). It was also the first operational VTOL jet aircraft.
just a little FYI about the Harrier, when it is in vertical flight, the engine will overheat because not enough air flow is going through the engine to cool it, so the harrier has about 45 seconds worth of water that it sprays in to help cool it's engine during that time. And the F-35, which can also do vertical flight does not have the same problem, so it can fly as long as it wants in vertical mode.
So the legend goes that on the set Curtis referred to Schwarzenegger as 'The Body' on account of his size and muscle, and Schwarzenegger referred to Curtis as 'The Body' on account of... well refer to the dance scene...
As a Brit, I remember watching this for the first time and thinking; Screw you JB, THAT'S how you make a tongue-in-cheek spy movie. Tom Arnold: " Yeah, I remember the first time I got shot out of a canon." Laughed my beer up through my nose.
I know you thought the movie got off track at the beginning, but here's the thing. The character development & family storyline is what made it more appealing to both men AND women. If it was just action stuff all the way through, many women would have possibly tuned out. As a woman myself I can't speak for all, but if a movie doesn't do something to make me care about the people in it, then I could care less if they go over the cliff, just saying! And the humor here is just the icing on the cake. Cameron knew how to entertain EVERYONE with this one - great fun for all!
She not only did the stunt for real. She recreated the stunt for that year's Oscar Awards Show. It was one of the hilighted movies at that year's event. And she did it to being dropped to the stage in front of the entire audience. It was so cool.
Love this movie. I wish they still made them like this. Real stunts, practical effects, miniatures and less CGI. One of Arnold's best of all time, for sure.
This movie is so iconic! The scene when Arnold has been given the Sodium Pentothal and then Jamie Lee Curtis asks him how long he has been a spy. That scene will always have a special place in my heart! When i was in the military, during my Advanced Individual Training, i had the misfortune of going to school from Midnight to 8am, M-F. No matter how much sleep you would get, your body just never gets used to being up all night. Almost every class, you could look around and see someone's head starting to sway and their eyes getting heavy as they were starting to fall asleep. It just became the funniest joke ever, to look into the person's barely opened eyes and say with an extremely slow, drugged up sounding voice "How long have you been a spy, Harry????" Very cool choice of movie James! As always, keep up the amazing work! You're one of the best on You Tube!
Also, search HBO Movie Magic. Most of the series on on UA-cam, a 90's behind the scenes show detailing classic practical effects from a time when CGI was a last resort instead of the whole movie.
Another action comedy from a different JC (John Carpenter this time) is Big Trouble in Little China. Kurt Russel and James Hong. You will not believe how good it is.
If I had to describe that movie, it would be “one of my favourite movies that I always forget is one of my favourite movies” I had so much fun re-watching it for the first time through your eyes.
funny note: Scene where Jamie Lee is dancing and slips from the pole was real, Arnold's reaction is real, her recovery was real, so they decided to keep it in as it played out perfectly.
It's amazing how they made her look so ordinary and kind of unattractive in the early parts of the film and she looks sexy as hell from this scene on, lol.
@Every Single Average Day I didn't actually say that a lot of people at this time were starting to believe or heard about the whole bullshit "Hermaphrodite" rumor/conspiracy about her, If you know what I'm talking about. Trust me, I remember Trading Places very well for her topless scenes when I saw it as a 13 year old, lol. Good times.
@Every Single Average Day It was a pretty old conspiracy/rumor also based around how she was named when she was born and the fact that she never had children and other stupid shit. To be fair, it doesn't make any sense and I know it's bullshit on par with the whole Richard Gere Gerbil thing. People come up with weird fucking rumors about Hollywood and celebrities. But you can google the rumor, the idea has been floating around since the 90's, I think.
As others have mentioned, the plane used in this movie is a Harrier jump jet, which does indeed have VTOL (Vertical Take Off & Landing) capability. It's been around since the late 60's and was created in England .The newer F-35 also has this ability. As a side notes, Nukes of any kind are *incredibly* hard to get to detonate accidentally, even by shooting them. Generally nukes are plutonium (or other suitable material) surrounded by explosives. In order to achieve the actual nuclear explosion, the explosives are all detonated at the same time, which compresses the plutonium until is reaches critical mass. The key is the insane timing needed to get this to work. The explosives all have to go off within 1 microsecond (1 millionth of a second) of each other. The odds of this happening due to an outside force are pretty much non-existent.
The behind the scenes for this movie are insane. Jamie Lee is a boss for going all in for the stunts! The harrier jet and crane bit work was and is jaw dropping. I still think True Lies is the best action/comedy to date.
Cameron got some big money from the military to feature the Harrier so heavily, much like Top Gun and the F-14 and Transformers and the AC-130. Getting into action movies is great for recruiting.
Yep, this jet was originally designed for the British armed forces and then McD got the contract to licence produce in the US for the Marine Corps who liked the fact it was versatile and could operate from rough airstrips as well as ships - making them a little more independent from the Navy for close air support. McD further improved the Harrier (I think known as the AV8B) and I believe it's outlasted the British versions in service.
There is a movie about two spies working for competing agencies who don't know it about each other. Mrs and Mr Smith. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Don't know if you seen it or not, but it's a dope action movie. *Well correction. Assassins I mean*
@@JamesVSCinema I don't know how your polling works, but throw that in there one day and see if your patreon folks want you to check it out. Mr and Mrs Smith is a lot of fun just like this movie
The unsung absolute legendary heroes of this movie are the compositors who had to hand composite an INSANE number of effects shots. And they did it so well you can barely see it. The stuff on the jet at the end, the build the rig on top of a building so they could shoot it "in the air" for real. Lot of green screens that had to be comped out manually for top down shots, etc. Oh the stuff the pulled out of their hats to make this film happen is legitimately insane. The bridge is known as Old 7 Mile Bridge. They created an 80 foot model for the destruction stuff. There's a 15 min B-roll footage on UA-cam that shows a lot of the stuff they did. It's crazy.
By the time this movie came out I was a huge James Cameron fan and if his name was on the poster I’d go buy a ticket. That Arnold was in it was the cherry on top
One of the reasons this movie has stuck in my mind over the years is the awesome ability for it to tell one story then have a full sub story within that main story so seamlessly and bring it all together in the end.
Harriers are called jump jets because of that capability. Developed in England in the '60s, they were also adopted by the U.S.M.C. they are being replaced now by the F-35B. They more often operated with short take off and vertical landing after fuel and weapon use have lightened them.
"You're fired!" Arnold dropping 1 liners like he does bodies! I've always been big on movies my whole life and it's always refreshing to see someone else enjoy the same movies that just take you on an adventure.
This film is so great because it came out during the third stage of 80/90s action films. The first stage is innovation, then imitation, then parody. The over the top elements in the film are a self-aware parody of all the action films which came out before. Last Action Hero is another film in the same vein
Great reaction! Sometimes we forget how good movies were, but then someone like you comes along just relishing all the best parts and we can’t help but smile.😊
This is one of the *very* few American remakes of French movies that is as good (or in this case even better) than the original ("La Totale!" from 1991)
YO, THIS IS ACTUALLY THE *ONE* MOVIE I'VE BEEN HOPING SOMEBODY WOULD RECOMMEND YOU BEFORE I HAD TO DO IT MYSELF, THIS IS MY FAVORITE 90S MOVIE, HELL YEAH JAMES, HELL YEAH
At the time it was released, True Lies was the most expensive movie ever made. Not counting for inflation of course. Cameron had back to back most expensive movies, Terminator 2 and True Lies.
I actually stayed at the hotel where they drove the motorcycle off the roof. I picked it at random and realized where I was while I was checking in. It's called the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles. Here are some facts: 1. Jamie Lee actually did the helicopter stunt. 2. Jamie Lee accidentally fell while dancing in the hotel room (it was not a joke). But they left it in the film as it was too funny. 3. Yes the Harrier jet actually does take off and land vertically. This goes down as one of my all time favorite films. Thanks for the reaction.
Cameron was talking to Curtis on the phone when he added Schwarzenegger on the line and asked if it was okay if Curtis could also be above the title. Schwarzenegger said absolutely. And yes, Curtis did that stunt herself.
Your right that the bridge was a 'miniature'... but it was a 300 foot long miniature. They went as big as they could with the miniature as possible to make it look as real as possible.
When this came out in 94 (I saw it at the cinema), there hadn't been a James Bond film for about 5 years and James Cameron had said he wanted to make the ultimate Bond film. He absolutely did. Still one of my favourite films, it's just sooo much fun
Yes and the scene when Tom says " what kind of a sick B... takes the ice cube tray out of the freezer " did happen with Roseanne and he was telling that story to Cameron and he thought it was so funny that they use it in the film !
Nearly as good as the second unit work he did on Galaxy of Terror for Roger Corman...

That plane is a Harrier Jump Jet, a very famous vertical takeoff plane in the 90s. Is designed to be able to take off easily from aircraft carriers or any other limited space situation. I never understand why this movie didn't get enough love. It was one of my favourites from my childhood. It has a very good comedy and a better action. I'm glad you discovered it. :)
now you're gonna have to do Jingle All the Way when christmas time comes around. Arnold and Sinbad make it hilarious!! Also if you haven't seen it you should watch Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, its one of my favs and it's trippy as heck, and i'd like to see your take on the style of that movie
as you were getting so pumped on the action and effects, all I could think was 'just wait for the jet!' XD such a great fun action movie, I hope they put it out on blu ray soon
At the time James Cameron was down to direct his version of the spiderman movie. Whilst negotiations were going on he took on True lies . The rumour at the time was , that he rewrote the final scenes in order to incorporate some aerial shots as a rehearsal for spiderman. As we know , his version of spiderman was never made but , watching this makes you wonder at what could have been.
Man I love this film. Does an awesome job of being tongue in cheek about action films while simultaneously being a great action film. Loved your laugh channeling Edward G. Robinson at 13.45 😂 Reminded me of the laugh from the old gangster film he's watching in Home Alone! PS RIP Bill Paxton. He was a standout performance in this film. Sorely missed 😔
Man I had a blast seeing this in theaters back in the day. SUCH a great ride. Funny, action packed, great comments/writing from the cast. I love it. lol
I love how he’s a nice guy and keeps apologizing to people caught in the middle. I think this is my absolute favorite movie of his. I was especially amazed at how well the Mach up of Arnold and Jamie worked for me. I do adore Jamie though… perhaps biased. And this movie marks the first time I realized Arnold was really cute.
This is one of the few films worth finding a pirated HD rip with a high-res audio track. It was just Cameron making a rollicking, fun and explosively satisfying action spy adventure. It is a historical crime that this film along with The Abyss hasn’t gotten a proper restoration at all.
24:18 Yes, VTOL Vertical Take-Off and Landing. This is a Harrier on loan from the Air Force, it is only shown hanging from a crane. Also the windows of the "prop" plane are plexiglass because the actual windows are a nearly unbreakable carbon/quartz crystal glass.
I love this film. The jet is an AV-8B Harrier which has VTOL or vertical take off and landing. Was designed for warzones where runways could have potentially been damaged and they could still operate.
23:24 - Yes Jamie Lee Curtis did that stunt. No green screen or CGI action. And regarding the bridge destruction, they constructed an 80-foot replica which is what was destroyed by the maverick missiles but the helicopter chase scene was done on the real Seven Mile Bridge. 24:11 - Yes jets do that. This one is called the AV-8B Harrier. It's a British VTOL fighter (Vertical Takeoff & Landing) and it's been used by the USMC. This VTOL concept was applied to the modern JSF program (aka F-35 Lightning II) so you'll eventually see F-35's vertically taking off from Navy ships.

It's crazy.
Always loved Arnold Schwarzenegger's work! This is one of the classics. So many great movies I know you will come across eventually! Keep it up!
He’s a treasure!
By the time this movie came out I was a huge James Cameron fan and if his name was on the poster I’d go buy a ticket. That Arnold was in it was the cherry on top
"I'm amazed at how well the action is done here"
I mean, it's James f'n Cameron, so...yeah :-p
One of the reasons this movie has stuck in my mind over the years is the awesome ability for it to tell one story then have a full sub story within that main story so seamlessly and bring it all together in the end.
Harriers are called jump jets because of that capability. Developed in England in the '60s, they were also adopted by the U.S.M.C. they are being replaced now by the F-35B. They more often operated with short take off and vertical landing after fuel and weapon use have lightened them.
James Cameron owned the 90s.
And yes, Harrier jets have vertical takeoff. And yes, Jamie Lee Curtis did that shit.
Lol, "ive never seen anything like this" dude THIS is 90s action 😄
I dig it!
12:53 pause.... pause..... pause..... "AAH HA HA. AHH HA HA." GOD i love how that part was edited
The Harrier jet that Arnold flies was the same jet the Hulk slams into when he's hit by Thor in Avengers.
"You're fired!" Arnold dropping 1 liners like he does bodies! I've always been big on movies my whole life and it's always refreshing to see someone else enjoy the same movies that just take you on an adventure.
Arnold at his best. An amazing comedic action adventure this one, a great piece of entertainment! True Classic!!! :)
He’s a legend haha
@@JamesVSCinema As close as we'll ever get to Arnold as James Bond. :)
For a moment I thought you meant Tom Arnold, because that's true too. Efficiently vague!
@@moonsammy42 Lol
I watch this movie once a year pretty much. So good.
Can’t blame ya!
25yrs later - still no sign of an Blu-Ray release. Glares in James Cameron's direction.
😂
Seriously.
@@ariadnepyanfar1048 yeah it's insane. I don't think there is a Blu ray version of Abyss either I may be mistaken though
As well as The Abyss
The camera low battery gag is pretty hilarious.
Yeah, this is easily in my top 5 action films of all-time. It's so good. Absolutely blew me away when I watched it as a kid.
It’s epic as all hell!
@@JamesVSCinema It is like a recent Mission Impossible prequel if that series had some comedic writing .
This film is so great because it came out during the third stage of 80/90s action films. The first stage is innovation, then imitation, then parody. The over the top elements in the film are a self-aware parody of all the action films which came out before. Last Action Hero is another film in the same vein
I think this is what they refer to as "a popcorn flick", and a good one.
Man, Arnold movies were my whole childhood. Nobody did action movies like the guy. Making me wish Arnold was a young guy again making these movies.
Um... Small funny fact - this is a James Cameron's movie. That explains everything.
Lmfaoooo
Great reaction! Sometimes we forget how good movies were, but then someone like you comes along just relishing all the best parts and we can’t help but smile.😊
This is one of the *very* few American remakes of French movies that is as good (or in this case even better) than the original ("La Totale!" from 1991)
I agree, it's one of the rare case where the remake of a French movie is better than the original.
YO, THIS IS ACTUALLY THE *ONE* MOVIE I'VE BEEN HOPING SOMEBODY WOULD RECOMMEND YOU BEFORE I HAD TO DO IT MYSELF, THIS IS MY FAVORITE 90S MOVIE, HELL YEAH JAMES, HELL YEAH
This movie is Legendary. Thats it.
At the time it was released, True Lies was the most expensive movie ever made. Not counting for inflation of course. Cameron had back to back most expensive movies, Terminator 2 and True Lies.
That particular jet is a Harrier Jump Jet..and yes they can take off vertically.
I actually stayed at the hotel where they drove the motorcycle off the roof. I picked it at random and realized where I was while I was checking in. It's called the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles. Here are some facts:
This is a cracking film. Bill Paxton is superb, as he always was.
Cameron was talking to Curtis on the phone when he added Schwarzenegger on the line and asked if it was okay if Curtis could also be above the title. Schwarzenegger said absolutely. And yes, Curtis did that stunt herself.
James Cameron must be the best director in history because he made Tom Arnold likable.😂😂😂
13:41 gotta love the halloween-esk music. Not only is it a great easter egg but the score works wonders for the scene
I have seen this 1000 times but never out that together.... great call
Tia Carrere, James Cameron and good ole Arnie being ballsy with his stogies. Where can you go wrong?
Your right that the bridge was a 'miniature'... but it was a 300 foot long miniature. They went as big as they could with the miniature as possible to make it look as real as possible.
This is a better James Bond film, than 80% of actual James Bond films
facts
When this came out in 94 (I saw it at the cinema), there hadn't been a James Bond film for about 5 years and James Cameron had said he wanted to make the ultimate Bond film. He absolutely did. Still one of my favourite films, it's just sooo much fun
"I married Rambo" .... no girl, you married the Terminator! 😂
I still love this movie after all these years and so many viewings
I always wondered if Tom Arnold was referring to Roseanne after his first divorce because I think this movie came out around the time that they split.
Yes and the scene when Tom says " what kind of a sick B... takes the ice cube tray out of the freezer " did happen with Roseanne and he was telling that story to Cameron and he thought it was so funny that they use it in the film !
It's James Cameron, how can you be surprised that the action is good 😁?
Filmmaker is SHOCKED, amazed and surprised that James Cameron can make good action movies.
I think this Cameron kid's got a bright future ahead of him!
Hahaha definitely looking forward to that!
I was just thinking this lol
as you were getting so pumped on the action and effects, all I could think was 'just wait for the jet!' XD such a great fun action movie, I hope they put it out on blu ray soon
Please check out A Long Kiss Goodnight with Gena Davis and Samuel L Jackson.
If you want to see more of Arnold playing a secret agent type role, I recommend Eraser (1996). Not as funny but certainly very entertaining.
Don't mess with the union!
I've seen this movie as a child so many times, but seeing it again now, holy sht the action/set pieces/effects are incredible.
When Arnold wants to make a James Bond movie.
"You're fired" at the end of the movie is never not funny. The one liners in this...just epic.
This is James freakin Cameron, one of the greatest action directors of all time !!
This is one of my favorite Arnold movies
Can’t blame ya!
Man I had a blast seeing this in theaters back in the day. SUCH a great ride. Funny, action packed, great comments/writing from the cast. I love it. lol
God I can’t wait for you to do Last ActionHero. It’s top tier Arnold.
Tom Arnold was hilarious in this. His one liners made the movie
Come on, it’s James Cameron. I like his Avatar films but I miss his action days
Definitely can’t wait to see more hopefully
@@JamesVSCinema oh and Curtis did the helicopter stunt. Cameron hung out the chopper and filmed it. Ah those were the days!
This is one of the few films worth finding a pirated HD rip with a high-res audio track. It was just Cameron making a rollicking, fun and explosively satisfying action spy adventure. It is a historical crime that this film along with The Abyss hasn’t gotten a proper restoration at all.
Nukes can't go boom if they're shot. Plus it's inside an armored casing.
13:46 Arnie's eyes in that shot always gets me every single time 😂😂
24:18 Yes, VTOL Vertical Take-Off and Landing.
Yep she performed the helicopter stunt. On her 35th birthday in fact. Jaw dropping visuals in this movie. Glad you liked
