Written/Produced by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern*=(*Writ but didn't co-produce) * Fonda and Hopper play two bikers who travel through the American Southwest and South, carrying the proceeds from a cocaine deal. The success of Easy Rider helped spark the New Hollywood era of filmmaking during the early 1970s. * A landmark counterculture film, and a "touchstone for a generation" that "captured the national imagination," Easy Rider explores the societal landscape, issues, and tensions towards adolescents in the United States during the 1960s, such as the rise of the hippie movement, drug use, and communal lifestyle.
I love Speed! Its been a while since I watched it, but it was one of my favorites from the 90s as well. So much stunts and action you don't see in movies today like you were saying at the end of this video. Dennis Hopper is definitely my favorite in this movie as well and he was an actor who sadly didn't get as much recognition as other stars. Dennis Hopper also happen to play King Koopa in the chessy Super Mario Bros. The Movie along with Bob Hoskins playing Mario and John Leguizamo playing Luigi. If your looking for any action movies Chuck Norris in Invasion U.S.A has that Golan Globus style going. Anything with Chuck Norris back then is a win-win when it comes to action. If your not familiar Golan Globus studios they did all kinds of action pack movies in the 80s. 😃 ( They also did the live action Master Of the Universe Movie then as well with Dolph Lundgren ) Although technically an action film I recommend is the Dish Wish movies staring Charles Bronson are awesome for there time. The first three are really good and the last two are okay. ( Not that recent Bruce Willis remake. No disrespect to Mr. Willis. I just prefer the old school ones. The remake was okay, but it wasn't the same.) Another 90s movie that does have some action but more of a thriller per say is: Falling Down staring Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall Its a movie of what happens when someone has had a very very bad day and blames the everyone but himself with his personal problems. Hope you put these movies on your list and get to check em out sometime. Thanks as always for your time! Keep up the awesome work!
Hi @@McCool117 thanks for the recommendation. The Jackal huh with Bruce Willis and Richard Gere. I really liked both of there acting styles I'll definitely check it out sometime. Thanks again.
I love that the characters on the bus actually have distinct personalities. A lesser script would have just brushed over them completely, but if we don't care about these people then we don't care if they get blown up or not. Speed really is a perfect movie for what it is.
Point Break is another great Keanu action flick from the 90s. The Mythbusters actually managed to jump a city bus 50 feet to test this scene out, though they had to set up a ramp (which is sorta implied in the movie with the stack of wood, even though it's not there in the approaching shot). Needless to say, the bus got jacked up and wouldn't have been able to run for much longer after. Also, the company of the plane that the bus crashes into "Pacific Courier Freight" is the same company as the van the villains used to get into Nakatomi in Die Hard. So both movies are in the same universe!
This is definitely a movie where you have to suspend your knowledge of physics :). A lot of the driving stuff is doable in real life but would bleed off too much speed and cause the bus to explode. You cannot maintain that kind of speed while you are hitting stationary objects.
Personally, I 100% credit this film with Keanu's career as an action star. John Wick did wonders, but Speed really got his foot in the door when it comes to that specific genre of film.

Great reaction and commentary.
Agree. I was so stoked when I saw this movie with my friends at the show. We went to eat afterwards and OJ Simpson was in a live action chase in his white bronco. That was a crazy day!
I don't think it was a "sleeper" at all, it made $350mil on a $30mil budget, and was a blockbuster success that won awards. IMO, the 'sleeper' was "Blown Away" with Jeff Bridges, Forrest Whittaker, and Tommy Lee Jones. It came out that same year; released a month later; and it barely made it's money back. Rumor is that they rushed Speed into theaters because they wanted to beat Blown Away to release. I guess people didn't like TLJ as a ranting and raving Irish terrorist and singing along with U2 music playing in the background, but I thought the acting and plot were 10x more interesting.

James Caan is the Misery actor. He's great. As I understand it, one of Caan's favorite roles is in the movie Thief (1981) dir. Michael Mann. Thief is an excellent film and Michael Mann's first.
“I saw this movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called ''The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.” - Homer Simpson
Dennis Hopper was the guy in Blue Velvet, he was also the guy in Apocalypse Now that you watched on the channel. He was Colonel Kurtz right hand man with the camera at the compound. James Caan was in Misery. R.I.P to both men
Yes, I am HERE for this one, it brings back truly warm memories for me. My family came together for movies like this, nevermind that I was a nine year old girl when this came out. Also True Lies, the Indiana Jones movies, Armageddon, Shawshank Redemption, and one of my personal favorites, The Rock (which I think you should watch. It's Michael Bay, we know what we're getting into with that one).
"I love how this is shot" This is the directorial debut of Jan DeBont, who was cinematographer on Die Hard, Black Rain, Hunt for Red October, Basic Instinct and Lethal Weapon 3.
This is why we say Die Hard was revolutionary for those early 90's action films the same way Jurrassic Park was for dinosaurs. The only difference was they made some gems from the Die Hard copies.
Dennis Hopper always makes a great villain. Blue velvet, this movie, waterworld, ... and I'm drawing a blank on what else. But yea he was good in those lol
The golden age of action movies is disputed but I've heard a lot of people say that it is 1984-1994 starting with The Terminator and ending with this movie, Speed. I tend to lean toward 1985 with Commando to 1995 with Die Hard with a Vengeance. Regardless, what an awesome time for action cinema across the world. Between Hollywood's output of hardcore classics to the emergence of Hong Kong's Heroic Bloodshed genre, just a great and innovative time for action movies.
SPEED, was the perfect name for this film, as once it got going, your on the edge of your seat the entire time. I saw this 3 times when it was first released, and I almost never see a movie more than once, let alone 3 times during an original run. But this movie was like your favorite roller coaster, because even though you know were all the dips and dives are, you still never get tired of the thrill, and that was "Speed".
"I have to stop this madman from getting his 3 million dollars!" Proceeds to do 10 million dollars in damage, including blowing up a plane lol! Ahh, the 90s!
100% practical effects, all the cars and the plane destroyed for real, insane action. Speed is out there on top, with Die Hard and Terminator 2. Just one of the best action movies in history of cinema.
I’m completely addicted to your reaction vids. I only took one semester of film class but it’s all coming back to me when I hear you breaking down specifics. Outstanding work.
If you ever feel so inclined, I would recomend old Danny Kaye movies (co-starred alongside Bing Crosby in White Christmas). Even though they are mostly from the fifties and forties, I always enjoyed watching them as a kid and even as an adult.
Bro when I tell you this film, along with 3 other films were my childhood…..man. I’ve always thought that when jack hears the news of Harry’s death and how angry and hurt he gets was brilliant. One of Keanu’s best acting moment’s.
Dennis Hopper is a rare example of an actor who, once he becomes well known, doesn't care at all about being liked by the audience. Most movie stars want to play sympathetic characters, or at least to defuse villainy with humor or with a relatable excuse for their behavior. But Hopper will just be straight-up despicable, as with Speed and Blue Velvet.
.....and yet he can play sympathetic and lovable, like "True Romance".....or, even better, sympathetic, lovable AND crazy, like in "The River's Edge" (Keanu's first movie!)
.....but yeah, totally agree. He's so great. I think if he hadn't been sitting out most of the 70s, he'd be regarded right up there with Nicholson, De Niro, Pacino, Hackman, Hoffman and Duvall. Not only did he have the chops, he predated them all, going back to the early 50s and the James Dean films.
Reeves and Bullock were great in this. One of my favorite movies you should react to is The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz.
Hey! Another one i saw in theater! I discovered Keanu with this movie, and that movie was part of the biginning of a new era of action movie (Die Hard, Lethal Weapons, Independence Day and so much more!!)!!
I don't understand why this one isn't up there in the "perfect movie" category with Back to the Future. The pacing is top notch, great acting/chemistry between the leads, awesome soundtrack, nothing can be added or taken away to improve the product. 9.5/10
The problem with the movie is the silliness of the bus doing things it could not possibly do and obviously not driving nearly as fast as it was supposed to be going. Still a fun movie
@Dan_and_Pip lol, it's regularly used by fans, critics, and filmmakers, as an example of a perfect film for a reason. Most cases, loving a film or not is subjective, but in this case you are just objectively wrong.
@@FinalBossWTMNIncorrect. All art is always subjective, period. There is no such thing as objectivity when it comes to subjects that include opinion. If a single human on Earth has EVER considered B2TF as an imperfect movie, it was, to them. They aren't wrong, you are.
I love this movie! Saw in the theater back in the day. The only thing I don't like, even though it's done practical, is the ridiculous bridge gap jump. It probably won't surprise you that everyone laughed at the part in my showing instead of gasping in suspense. And Sandra Bullock in this and Demolition Man ... just😍
Dennis Hopper, the actor who played the mad bomber in this, made his screen debut in "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955). His carreer included roles in some stand out movies including "Giant" (1956), "The Sons of Katie Elder" (1965), "Cool Hand Luke" (1967), "Hang 'Em High" (1968), "Easy Rider" (1969), "True Grit" (1969), "Apocalypse Now" (1979), "Rumble Fish" (1983), "River's Edge" (1986), "Blue Velvet" (1986), "Hoosiers" (1986), and "True Romance" (1993). Keanu Reeves also features in "River's Edge", a 1986 American crime drama in which a group of confused teenagers confront the reality of murder.
Awesome movie. Fun fact; according to Keanu, Fox Studios used to actively try to keep Keanu Reeves out of acting projects he was interested in bc he didn't want to do Speed 2
@@ITSAHARDNUGLIFE it was an interview on one of the talk shows and he said he was really interested in doing a Broadway(?) play. I might be remembering the venue wrong, but he said he wanted to do this cool play. But you're not wrong 30 years later he's STILL one of the greatest action stars, so you're right he made a good choice.
This movie is a great example of taking a simple premise and executing it so well that the movie becomes special. It's a rare Action/Thriller film. Also, while I don't know if it was the case for this movie, but Keanu is known for doing his own stunts when possible.
12 buses were used to portray 1 picture bus. Some for inside shots, stunts, explosions, the bus jump & a processed bus used for the scenes underneath. The intro & scenes with the elevator shaft & the subway car passing through the Hollywood Station construction site & going up unto Hollywood Blvd were all miniature setups to make it look as real as possible
I remember hearing that at one point the script was that Jack's partner Harry was the one that put the bomb on the bus. He was forced to retire from the LAPD due to the gunshot wound that Jack gave him dealing the elevator bomber at the beginning. It was after the cast of Jeff Daniels as Harry that script was changed because the producers thought that Jeff Daniels was "too likeable" and therefore wouldn't be taken seriously as the villain.
One of the great 90s flicks. This one was a childhood favorite. Also...I know this is kind of cheating because I'm not part of the poll...but you need to check out a movie with Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones called Blown Away. Great flick! Another 90s classic.
Saw this in the theater and it was so much fun. The bus jump was just crazy to see. And yes, Dennis Hopper was in BLUE Velvet. Funny you mention Die Hard because the director of photography on Die Hard directed Speed.
"This Summer, Get Ready For Rush Hour." Before Keanu Reeves was cast as the hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas, Alec Baldwin, Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson,Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, and Tom Hanks were considered. Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, and Halle Berry were considered for Annie. Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and Robert DeNiro were almost cast as the villain. The film was a box office and critical success making, $350 million dollars against a $30 million dollar budget. It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Fucking awesome summer film, it was so much fun to see in the theater. Some people shit on action movies as being trash cinema, it is not. There is a art in making a compelling action movie but still have good character development, cinematography. See Black Rain (Ridley Scott)
SPEED: one of the best action movies of the 90s in fact and you still need to react to the other best action movies of the 90s like: THE ROCK (1996), FACE OFF (1997) and CLIFFHANGER (1993).
I reckon you should watch all the best movies of 1999...if you google films released that year (including international films), it is insane how many great ones came out in that one year.
Jan de Bont is a cinematographer and this was his directoral debut (but he didn't direct many movies). He also lensed Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October among others. The reason action flicks in the 90's were so high concept/high budget was because these were sort of the blockbusters of the time. In that role they basically got replaced by superhero/big sfx movies and action became smaller like in Taken or John Wick. In very very broad strokes of course, the 90's also had their sfx spectaculars like Independence Day and Jurassic Park and we still have big action franchises like Mission Impossible and Fast & Furious.
DITTO! High five! I like good movies, whatever the genre, and this one definitely fits the bill. Well done. And, just like you, I found most 80s and 90s "action" movies completely boring and lame; all I can say is thank God for David Lynch, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, The Coen Brothers, Jonathan Demme, Terry Gilliam and a bunch of others who got me and my friends through the lame 80s. Each year it seemed the mainstream got lamer and lamer and lamer until one day I woke up to discover movies were now "franchises", like Dunkin' Donuts, or Micky D's! :D
This movie is a Die Hard-ception. Director Jan De Bont was the cinematographer for the first Die Hard, and this one is literally Die Hard on a bus. Also, there was a clever CGI moment in the film. The unfinished highway ramp was actually just fine, the gap was VFX, wich I didn't realize until this year.
The bus jump is a combination of practical effects and CGI. The moment you get the shot from the bottom of the flying bus and the other shot the bus landing when it barely makes it, they are both CGI. Otherwise the bus going on a ramp is real. When you look carefully on the shot after the bus lands on the ground and it is jumping and trying to correct the direction you can see it is empty and there is a stuntman driving it. The stuntman actually broke 4 his ribs doing this. In real life the bus would never jump such a long distance. It just goes straight down as it's too heavy so they had to edit the hell out of it to make it look like it is in the movie. This info is all from behind the scenes and i don't know why i still remember this 🙂 Glad you liked the movie 👍
This is a pure action popcorn movie...plain and simple! Just a fun watch that gives you exactly what you expect from an action movie from this decade and genre.

Michael Bay has a bad rep but I remember The Rock being pretty good. I was younger and less discerning though 😅
Now THIS is what I call a MOVIE! 🍿
"I love how this is shot"
This is the directorial debut of Jan DeBont, who was cinematographer on Die Hard, Black Rain, Hunt for Red October, Basic Instinct and Lethal Weapon 3.
So happy to see Speed getting so much love 😆❤
This is why we say Die Hard was revolutionary for those early 90's action films the same way Jurrassic Park was for dinosaurs. The only difference was they made some gems from the Die Hard copies.
Dennis Hopper always makes a great villain. Blue velvet, this movie, waterworld, ... and I'm drawing a blank on what else. But yea he was good in those lol
I worked at Blockbuster video when this took over the New Release wall! It was such a big deal.
90's villains are freaking hilarious. I remember watching Speed with my mom whenever it was on tv haha.
Outstanding work.
saying he's taller was the joke.
he's now at least a head taller.
My favourite movie. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride! 😁
Dude... MAD MAX FURY ROAD. they brought the 80s-2000 stunts back and then cranked it up to 15. And it works! Oh damn does it work
From what I remember, when the movie was coming out all of the marketing was on the premise and the highway jump. This movie was a big hit.
So there's 0.5 worth of things that could be added 🤔
The bus jump scene alone. That's about it honestly.
This is one of my favorite movies man, so glad you are checking it out!
SPEED is an underrated CLASSIC action film!
I love this movie! Saw in the theater back in the day. The only thing I don't like, even though it's done practical, is the ridiculous bridge gap jump. It probably won't surprise you that everyone laughed at the part in my showing instead of gasping in suspense. And Sandra Bullock in this and Demolition Man ... just😍
I was lucky enough to get to see this one in the theater, and yes, it was as EPIC as you can imagine it would be. Such a good action film.
Blood Sport (1988) Kickboxer (1989)
Idk why but this movie hit so good when it came out, still say "Don't get ded" : P also where metal gear 2 i think ripped its music from : D
I saw this film at the cinema, enjoyed it so much !!! On the edge of my seat the entire movie,I never get tired of watching this film.
Fun fact, both Keanu and Sandra later admitted to having crushes on one another during filming. But both remained professional.
Yeah...we dont talk about the bus jump
Fun fact: both Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock had a secret crush on each other while filming the movie , so their chemistry is legit
Dennis Hopper (rip) is such a good villain. Frank Booth especially is such a scary, convincing bad guy character. He's terrifying.
Awesome movie. Fun fact; according to Keanu, Fox Studios used to actively try to keep Keanu Reeves out of acting projects he was interested in bc he didn't want to do Speed 2
Well he had to choose, Devil's Advocate or Speed 2? I think he made the right choice
@@ITSAHARDNUGLIFE it was an interview on one of the talk shows and he said he was really interested in doing a Broadway(?) play. I might be remembering the venue wrong, but he said he wanted to do this cool play. But you're not wrong 30 years later he's STILL one of the greatest action stars, so you're right he made a good choice.
what a shitty thing to do
Good info, never knew this, childish attitude by Fox Studios.
Glad he didn't, as Speed 2 was a waste of
film finances. Plus, maybe Keanu expected
a "sophomore jinx", and wanted to avoid it. :-0
I remember seeing this movie in theatres when I was only nine years old! still love it to this day, great reaction James😊
That was a good call.
Was Dennis Hopper the crazy guy in….. yes, yes he was.
90s action flicks, for sure.
One of the great 90s flicks. This one was a childhood favorite. Also...I know this is kind of cheating because I'm not part of the poll...but you need to check out a movie with Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones called Blown Away. Great flick! Another 90s classic.
Universal Soldier (1992) and Universal Soldier - Regeneration (2009)
Saw this in the theater and it was so much fun. The bus jump was just crazy to see. And yes, Dennis Hopper was in BLUE Velvet. Funny you mention Die Hard because the director of photography on Die Hard directed Speed.
“Well I’m taller” is one of my favorite post-kill one-liners ever
I appreciate your in depth analysis of one of my favorite movie of all time
This is one of my favorite action movies! It’s exciting no matter how many times you watch it and the chemistry between characters is on point.
"This Summer, Get Ready For Rush Hour."
Before Keanu Reeves was cast as the hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, Michael Douglas, Alec Baldwin, Bruce Willis, Richard Gere, Mel Gibson,Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, and Tom Hanks were considered.
I watched this movie to death! and alll the bruce willis, vann damme, nicolas cage, arnold movies I loved the 90`s- The Rock and Conair is soooo good!
SPEED: one of the best action movies of the 90s in fact and you still need to react to the other best action movies of the 90s like: THE ROCK (1996), FACE OFF (1997) and CLIFFHANGER (1993).
JAmes, thank you for this awesome reaction! I love this movie and I haven't watched it in a long time, i'm so glad I "watched" it with you!
Anytime brotha!!
wish we still got these concept action films. take a simple premise and throw everything at it is the pinnacle of the late 90s early 2000s!!
Thing that always bugged me is the red dot marking 55mph on the speedometer, I always find myself looking at it as if it marked 50mph.
I hate action flicks, but I always loved Speed..
DITTO!
The birds to can see in the 'gap' are also CGI.
Glad it made you happy! I saw it in the cinema in 1994, an unforgettable adrenaline rush. My favorite action along with Aliens, Mad Max
This is a pure action popcorn movie...plain and simple! Just a fun watch that gives you exactly what you expect from an action movie from this decade and genre.
Btw on that bridge jump scene there is a famous movie error
You can see the shadow of a full bridge even tho its not complete
:3
Blue velvet!! Lol first flick I ever watched on this channel!!
First film where I saw Dennis Hopper, was Easy Rider. Been fan of him ever since. Thank you very much for this reaction James!
Keanu is those pants should be in The Smithsonian.
This movie rules, glad you got to watch it! Blessings brother.
