They are goldfinches…one of my favs.
I thru hiked in 89 with a wise old Native. It poured or rained steady for two straight weeks, driving me NUTS.
The wise man asked Windwalker in the last two weeks of bitching about the rain have you stopped a single raindrop from falling? No I responded.
So you wasted all that energy being pissed at something you have no control over or stop. Instead of wasting energy that way? Gain energy by dancing in the rain, thanking it for all it does.
That changed my attitude when I learned to thank the rains by dancing in them. Look at the beauty around you, rain or shine. Like you said Kelly "it's magickal".
There's nothing more therapeutic about moaning or shouting at something, even if it doesn't respond.

Love your expressions of joy and awe to the events of nature. Long periods of immersion into the natural world have a way of convincing us that true happiness is often found in the most simple things... fog clearing out and sun bursting in, a view that almost takes your breath, the amazing variety of flora and fauna. We learn that it doesn't take material "stuff" to make us happy. We learn that really what makes us happy is free and comes when we have a love for God in our heart a love of His creation, and peace in our soul.

Loved Grayson Highlands and the ponies when I was at Mt Rogers in 2017.
Kelly take zero days and recover your feet and be there for your friend Grace. A true friend is hard to come by. AT will be there, but friends n family are gold. Agree on a plan with Grace find a middleground. She may be ok in a few days and your feet and body will appreciate some rest and then push forward. Just my 2 cent thoughts...

Man those yellow flowers were awesome! I think that bird was an American goldfinch. I love to sit and watch the fog roll out. It’s total magic! What an epic section of trail today, and who doesn’t love wild ponies!!! So glad you were jammin to the band today! Huge thanks to the trail angels! Love the attitude, it is so balanced and will take you to Katahdin and beyond! Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

We use to camp in those parts all the time and you NEVER knew what kind of weather from one day to the next!! I know at home if it called for a 10 or 20 percent of rain at home it ALWAYS poured at Grindstone Campground. Which is stepping close to Grayson Highlands!!

I hope your friend is going to be OK. Being away from home it can be hard to find the right help. You take care of your feet. They is a person in my area who did hike the trail in his early 50''s. Some how he hurt his feet on the rocks in Penn. He went off trail and went home and found an doctor for his feet. He was off 6 weeks but he did make it all the way. He says to everyone to get there feet checkup before they start. Keep Strong and you will be OK

I live in the PNW and I’ve found that when you get out on the trails in the rainy winter it seems to almost always clear up enough to make it worth it.
Good girl use Epson salt when soaking feet, whenever you can elevate your feet/legs

Kelly - Congrats on your milestone. And healing thoughts to Grace. You're hiking in a stretch i've hiked in - Grayson Highlands - though ironically when we lived in North Carolina. Saw the ponies of course, but no Longhorns. We now live in Virginia, so you are getting closer, tho' still a ways 'till you're near me Although we haven't met, as you did that fellow in Hot Springs, I want to make a similar offer. In case you've forgotten (how could you, with so few followers/commenters -ha!) I'm now in a wheelchair. But i do drive. So, if you/companions are in need of assistance shuttle wise, including just a ride into town for supplies and back, anywhere within an hour or so of me, please contact me and i will help you out. I live right near Rockfish Gap. So basically anything from the James River up to Harrisonburg/Massanutten. I've given lifts to a few thru-hikers, just in passing - my grocery shopping takes me past Rockfish Gap anyway - but never 'by appt', so to speak. Anyway, hope you don't need more than routine help when passing by here, but I'd love to meet you and provide what help i can to your journey.
