A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ UA-cam. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of UA-cam I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on UA-cam won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This UA-cam channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different

And this was almost 40 years ago. They still haven't caught up with him.
In what way exactly?
Guitarist can cop the speed, but they can’t cop the rhythm pocket he had. The swing.
As the old adage goes, Eddie didn’t invent tap guitar, but he perfected it.
fred astaire invented tap
@@kalebvera1841 But Vera Ellen made it so much prettier
Yes, he was great on tap guitar.
Check out Ichika Nito
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a way to get back into an instagram account??
I was dumb forgot my password. I would love any tips you can offer me.
And this is why EVH was the GOAT...R.I.P Eddie
Yeah, lost another good one. :(
Right on!💔R.I.P Eddy!
You have been Van Halened. He just died a few days ago. Rip Eddie
Eddie lived by one rule in music, "There are NO rules in music."
It is one thing to view this and be impressed. It is another level when you play guitar, understand what he is doing and still are amazed at the quality and difficulty of what he is doing from a technical level. That stretch and speed he has with a five fret span using his little finger, many can never do like this.
"He 'bout to act a fool"
Son, you have *no idea* what he's about to do to that guitar. Hide the peanut butter, sh_t's about to get *weird*.
So glad you watched it! This is the EVH of my generation. We were amazed by him a TRUE guitar rock hero!!
Eddie had energy, style and serious talent! That grin of his was contagious!
We've all got to go some time, but it's very sad he went so soon and so young yet.
RIP EVH
#Legend
Dude; I started playing because of Jimmy Page - when I heard Eddie it was like the whole WORLD had exploded. This is such a loss to the world. Glad I was graced to be on the Earth at the same time Eddie was.
This is how I'm picturing Eddie in heaven. Just like this. In that patterned jumper tearing it up all over the place.
With Neil Peart playing drums right behind him! 2020 and Cancer really took a toll!
The best ever. Saw him in concert and he was amazing!! He will be missed. Rest In Peace Legend!!!
Me too. My first concert
I could watch this everyday he was so good I love the way it doesn't at times sound like one instrument. Plus he had the sweetest smile.
Heart cover Stairway to Heaven live at the Kennedy Center Honors.
wow that was like 1981 eddie van halen. truly in his prime.
One of the commenters on your last Van Halen video recommended "Ice Cream Man". I had never heard of it before so I went and listened to it. It wasn't what I expected from a Van Halen song, but damn it was catchy. I can't get it out if my head now
One of the greatest Blues songs ever recorded. I have to listen to it at least once every week. A Blues masterpiece!
And that's why, he's the greatest of all time - GOAT...
I have heard of this before, but I did not know it was on video. Amazing. And I was a teen back then.
OP’s reaction = everyone in 1978
As a guitar player I can say, Eddie changed the way rock guitar was played. There was rock guitar before Eddie and ROCK guitar after Eddie. He played Eruption different all the time. This isn’t really the best I’ve heard, incredible as it is.
There are plenty as good or better than Eddie but we wouldn't know their names if not for Eddie. His influence is matched only by Hendrix and Clapton.
And James -- back then we all knew his wife, too. They were so cute. RIP Eddie.
In no particular order, SRV, Jimmy, and Eddie. The three goat's in my humble opinion. Great reaction!!!
The Soul, the Innovator and the Passion of the guitar.
add Terry Kath to that mix
@@briann7495 I will have to check this person out.
Prince was also a very good guitarist
@@melbournedemonselite9352 Prince could shred but in my opinion not on the same level.
FYI HE WAS A CLASSIC TRAINED MUSICIAN ,he knew how to play piano as well guitar ALSO HE BUILT HIS OWN GUITAR FROM PARTS and learned how to replicate sounds on it MANUALLY
great reaction! your analysis is very on point. he's a truly guitar god and a master innovator on the instrument and beyond.
There was always this great smile on EVH's face, he really loved what he was doing. The first time I saw them was 1976, I was 16 and fake id'd my way into the Whiskey A Go Go in LA - what a night!
Dude I am jealous! 1979 for me! That club gig must have been epic!
@@MacPro8CoreMan Dude, I was 16, Epic does not do the event justice!
There is another that you may like as you can see what his hands are doing. A little better quality, too. And he makes the guitar sound like a Cello which is unique.
ua-cam.com/video/L9r-NxuYszg/v-deo.html
Tapping is a thing but Eddie was a force of nature. He couldn't read music. Someone wrote music for his guitar work but they had to invent a process for it as the sounds he made could not be written as traditional notes. Eddie joked he couldn't read that, either. 😄
Yes! That link has much better quality and a more developed Eddie!
Please react to this version.
It'll be the BEST 13 minutes of your life and your ears will thank you for it. Your subs wouldn't steer you wrong.
I predict that you'll be falling down that Van Halen rabbit hole soon. It's well worth it.
They've said it....now I'll say it. PLEASE!
Yes please
Yes... This version takes you to another place.
There is a better video where you can really see his playing.
Same name about 20 years later with Sammy giving the intro? Added a lot like 316 and really perfected the solo. Like Neil ape art, it evolved from incredible to legendary
NO BOUGHT EDDIE PLAYED BETTER HERE MORE ORIGINAL MUCH MORE FEELING HERE
@@kevinc6916 It was only about 7 or 8 years if you’re talking about '87
@@kevinc6916 - Noooo - 2015 Hollywood Bowl - Way better than Live Without a Net!
A legend! You might like Jimmy Hendricks version of the Star Spangled Banner. He played it at Woodstock!
I’ve seen Van Halen live 3 times going back to the early 80’s.... ummm Eddie is one of BEST ever! When it comes to his solo everyone goes into a trance! RIP Eddie ❤️
Your fingers have to overcome a lot of pain to get to that perfection
He practiced 6 hours a night, every night for years to become the GOAT!
EVH is an Amazing Guitar player! He is 1 of the best ever. RIP
SO wish I could relive the first time I saw this exact video in 2007. Completely floored me. I was already playing guitar for a few years prior, but only heard of the name Van Halen - never listened to anything of theirs. Even having know Steve Vai and Joe Satriani at that point, this changed everything again. Eddie was and still IS one of a kind. There won't ever be any one of his calibur.
I followed his career for 4 decades . . he was absolutely amazing!
You look suitably impressed .Good or great is not enough legendary.
RIP to the master! ❤
Yes!😥❤😭
Eddie and his brother learned to play the piano as children starting at the age of six, so Eddie knew how to play piano before he mastered the guitar. Eddie said: "I started doing all kinds of weird stuff on the guitar, which became part of my playing. I started doing harmonics and tapping on the guitar and pulling off strings and doing all this weird stuff that no one had ever done before." There will never be another guitar player like Eddie. RIP sweet Eddie. Check out "Love Walks In" and "Dreams" .
There are different versions of "Eruption", you're listening to a live version where he plays around with it a lot. To get the gist of this song and see it's original power, listen to a studio version that would have come out on the radio. It rocks.
Amen!
I told you he was freaking amazing 😆
*When Gods walked the Earth*
This is what eargasms look like
Eddy Van Halen (who just passed this month) was one of the last guitar heroes of our day! The mix of showmanship & skill!
this guy is like 25 in this video and he had fingers like foot long hot dogs! He could beat Shaq at thumb wrestling... ps noone ever even thought about playing a guitar like this, my man had to basically invent his own modified guitar to play some shit.. noone ever heard of before .. also ladies .. you know!
He called it "Frankenstein " aka "frankenstrat"
So much more than "just a guitar solo"
Not gonna lie, the intro is exactly what I need to hear right now, tough times
Tapping is why he rules the world as THE soloist guitar player MASTER.
His creativity and feel and sense of how to put all these unique crazy guitar stylings into the context of a good somgs are the things that stand out for me. The songs always came first with him.
@@understone I can't argue there. Just saying, this is what set him above the rest.
Your expressions say it all 😅😅😅
I love watching people see Eddie play for the first time. It reminds me of when I first saw it 40 years ago. He also did the solo on Michael Jackson’s Beat It. For free without credit.
R.I.P. Ed. Can’t wait to see the big gig in the sky .
It's a shame how underrated Eddie was. In my eyes he's one of the GOAT's up there with Jimi and SRV...
@Keith Nowak Yes good additions to that club.
Eddie was not, by any stretch of the imagination, underrated! The last couple of weeks since he passed away is testament to that!
@Keith Nowak Maybe so, however, the outpouring of grief from the music community over the last week would have definitely turned a lot of people on to his music if they hadn't heard him before. Like so many before him such as Prince, Bowie, etc. it sometimes takes their passing to ignite a new appreciation for their music. A lot of the time its not the fault of the new younger listeners that they haven't heard someone so iconic before, given that have the entire history of music at their fingertips in a much more accessible way than those of us who grew up in the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, and are therefore much more eclectic in their tastes than maybe previous generations were.
If EVH's passing introduces a new generation of people to his music, it ensures that his music will continue to live on.
Is that a joke or are you on something?
This is actually a compilation solo of his most popular licks and tricks wrapped up in with Eruption that he does live. He was the reason I started playing guitar and my hero and I still can't believe he's gone-RIP Eddie.
Want to see another incredible guitar performance? Watch While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Prince
Yeah that is entertaining.
I seem to recall that Eddie once said he messed this solo up about half way through, I think he was annoyed that this was the take they went with. It wasn't even a song at first, this was him warming up.
That’s exactly what it’s callled...tapping
Hang On Brother your going for a Ride !
RIP my humble friend. To say you will be missed is not enough...never enough.
So freaking awesome. Im only 28 and i could only imagine people's ears when they first heard Eddie.
I’ll tell you because I was there. It was a universal WTF is that? How is that even possible? And he Still gets that reaction today! Saw the 1984 and Fair Warning tours. ROCK PRIVILEGE!!
He's got you hooked my friend
Eddie Van Halen was unique in his style, techniques and virtuosism.
He redefined guitar totally! His playing was brilliant! He gave new perspectives of what a soloist should do! Genuis!
Love the rawness of this video.so Awesome!!we all miss you Eddie..RIP♥️🙏🏼👌👍
Absolute guitar genius - when he came on the scene in the late 70’s - people’s jaws dropped at his abilities.
Honestly Dude if you knocked on anyone's door in most of the world and you said you just saw Eddie Van Halen do all those crazy things I would say 90% of the populations would respond "Yea, it's Eddie Van Halen!! Where have you been??" Now by your own admission you haven't been around Rock except for the past few months, now there are many guitarists out there that can do incredible things. Eddie just happens to be one of those at the top.
Your facial expression is the same face I made when I tried to figure out how to play it
He was all that and a bag if chips. When people become so incredibly good at one this it. Becomes beauty the truest form of art. Listen to eruption following into little guitars ...beautiful is to lihht a word here
I'm glad I got to see them at their peak, in 1984, just a few meters from the stage. In retrospect, I've understood how dangerous it was, I could hardly breathe. Being that close to the stage wasn't always safe back then.
Your reactions are on point my friend
Eddie has always been impressive.
I grew up in San Diego.
I saw them (Van Halen) close to 100 times. From the mid 70's to mid 80's.
Every time they came to San Diego, I went to the concert.
great job - the solo is incredible and the music is just as good!
Van Halen - I'll Wait (i think is one of their best songs) studio version
(His tone isn't too good here) people always mention his 'tapping' but really tapping isn't hard, it's his composing, and his, rhythm-to-lead-back-to-rhythm-flow that was so great, and his 'volume-knob-swells' mastery to me is what was really impressive. (Listen to 'Cathedral' by EVH) it's a guitar, not an organ
So sad we lost him, Eddie Van Halen, this year 😢
Best live guitarist I ever saw.
He always did a solo at his concerts. At least the concerts I went to. Oh he comes down hanging upside down screaming his guitar. RIP Eddie. Welcome to the Rock world...
He’s a guitar 🎸 GOD RIP EDDIE 🎸❤️🦋❤️🎸
I saw them live twice. Once with their first lead singer, Diamond David Lee Roth, and once with their second, Sammy Hagar. Both were some of the best shows I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of shows. Eddie was one the people that made me want to play myself.
.R.I.P EDDIE. THE BEST THERE WAS, THE BEST THERE IS, THE BEST THERE EVER WILL BE ..THANKS EDDIE FOR THE MUSIC YOU LEFT US ..
I'm amazed every time I see it...
Best reaction to Eruption EVER!!
Early on until their 2nd album, he would typically play with his back to the crowd during his solos .... so people couldn’t steal his technique.
one of the best guitarist if not he is in top 5
He could play the piano as well as he played the guitar.
You are totally right. Playing the guitar like a piano at times with 2 hands.
Id love to hear the " motorcycle song" by Arlo Guthrie.
Eddie Van Halen is the Greatest Guitar player ever. His contribution to the music world was monumental. There has never nor will there ever be another Guitar player as great as Eddie Van Halen
He was a musical Genius a guitar god the original Guitar Hero. Eddie Van Halen is still missed very much today as when he died.
It’s great to see someone from a different musical background get what EVH was doing here. I grew up with 70s rock. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was the first album I bought. I enjoyed The Sugarhill Gang and Run DMC when they came along but didn’t get what they were doing. That came years later when I was watching 8 Mile and I got it. I got the context. I’m still a classic rock lover at heart though. I think our early teens are formative in what we first love but we can learn to appreciate other forms of music and maybe love it too.
Saw in concert with Roth, one of the best groups to see live. Yes, he does all that crazy stuff on stage, at least he did when I saw them. They all had their solos in concert that lasted a LONG time. Eddie is one of the best!!
Thanks for the reaction. Every time Eddie picked up a guitar it was special and at each concert he did a variation of this long solo which strung together some of his more famous solos. I was lucky enough to see them in concert 3 times including during the last tour in 2015. There is another version the Eruption guitar solo (the live without a net version) which has superior audio quality and superior camera work. It covers parts that you saw in this video and several other parts, but that night he was perfection, if perfection could be improved upon. If this one is a 10 out of 10, that clip is an eleventy-billion out of 10. It's pretty similar to this so I understand if you don't want to review it, but for your personal pleasure even if you don't post it, I think you will enjoy watching it.
Yup. Better quality recording, all around video and audio. Truly check that one out to. Its damn shame he's gone. His son Wolfgang Van Halen, named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, is an outstanding musician as well. His debut solo album will arrive June 11th 2021. At least 4 of the songs have been released already. Check out ^Dont Back Down'". Did I mention Wolf plays every note of every instrument on every song and soings every note as well on the entire album.. Yep bass, drums, guitar, vocals all of it. The video for the song I mentioned above has a nice way of illustrating his many talents.
I've watched every single one of your videos from the beginning of your channel, and I like how you changed up your intro a little bit. It was really nice.
Saw them 3 times live and I hate to tell you that this was mild compared to how far he would go to blow your mind!
Another convert!!! Thnx for appreciating a virtuoso!! No one better!!
You need to react to the studio version 1st album
Too bad you didn't play the song that it goes into, sounds epic!
I was 14 yrs old when the first Van Halen album dropped in 1978. I heard the entire album on our local station who premiered it on that day in the afternoon. I have been a massive VH fan ever since (only with DLR up front). I saw them in 1979, 80, 81, 82 and twice in 84. Then when David Lee Roth returned as the vocalist in 2007 I saw them twice in 2007, once in 2012, and twice in 2015... Including the last time they played in the USA at the Hollywood Bowl. That's 11 times over 36 years. So I am a FAN. Eddie had a huge problem with booze and drugs until around 2008. When he was drunk and wasted on coke he was still the greatest Rock Guitarist of all time. And yeah; he did the tapping and tricks from1978 on. But in the 2012 and 2015 concerts he was so much better. I did not think it was possible, but he was at his best in his late 50's when he was sober. As for Eddie being the only guitarist who used the two handed tapping technique... He was the first to use it this way, and in many songs. But when the first album came out in 1978 almost every Rock guitarist on earth learned (or tried to) how to do it. There were many groundbreaking techniques that Eddie introduced, and he went on to become the most influential, as well as the greatest guitarist in Rock history. Edward Lodewijk Van Halen died October 6, 2020, after a long battle with cancer.
Excellent eye in the guitar playing. Yes he is playing it like a piano, his only musical training was in classical and jazz piano, and he taught himself how to play guitar by going at it like it was a piano. Just one of the things that seperated him from all of the other guitar players out there.
This is awesome but I can see clearly how he developed as a player when compared to live without a net. Comparing his tone wouldn't be fair based on quality of this recording but I really liked his tone better there too.
His tone was awesome here. Was so raw.
When he slides his hand past the pickups, down the fretboard, he is doing harmonics. You don't fret the notes. You keep you hand lightly on the strings. The harmonic notes keep subdividing as you move your hand down the frets. Takes a lot of practice.
Now the part after that is also harmonics, only he's picking the notes with his thumb behind his right finger. Super freaking hard!
Indeed, people do not play like this anymore. And the reason why this is so amazing is because he is showing the audience that you start slow and then speed up as you get good. It's a clinic on technique.
Poundcake Eddie brings out a drill. I was not a huge fan of Sammy years but it is a killer song
Rest well Eddie.....been about 7 months now and still can’t believe he’s gone....he was a guitar God
Now if u think that’s something u need to watch David Gilmore of Pink Floyed, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Angus Young of AC/DC. I’ve seen them all perform in concert. It would be very hard to put any of the 4 at number 1 but I’ve always been partial to jimmy especially when I seen him use a violin bow on a 12 string. It was awesome. But u make the call. Eddie was great I’m going to miss him saw them 3 times. Thanks a lot for the video brought back some good memories.!!!😎🇺🇸✌️
When it comes to the top talents I think putting a number to them is foolish. My favorite has always been Angus Young...personally, but if I absolutely had to put numbers to them Eddie would be either #1 or #2 all time and Angus would be closer to #10. But then anyone can come in here and give very compelling reasons why so and so should be #2 or #3 or whatever.
I think there are probably 15 guitar players in the world that could be considered for greatest of all time and it does a huge disservice to all of them when people just have to rank them.
You can hear the influence of classical music, especially Bach, though Bach's music was much more technically demanding.
I had the pleasure of experiencing Van Halen live in 1993 with Sammy Hagar. Jaw dropping doesn't even begin to describe what it's like. They opened with an awesome song Mine All Mine and would deliver the Highest energy show I'd seen. I would love to go back to that moment and re experience it He improvised a lot. There's plenty of youtube footage for you to get a sense of what it was like. View footage from 81, 93,, and 20070or 2008. For Dave years listen to Everybody Wants Some, Hagar Years Best of Both Worlds or Poundcake
I've seen him live 3 times and I have seen this video(and another one that is as good or even better) probably 50 or 60 times and it still amazes me every time.
There’s a jazz player named Stanley Jordan who used to tap both hands on the fret board as if he were playing a piano. Also check out Roy Buchanan, who raised blues to nearly this impossible level long before Van Halen.
You should see Yngwie Malmsteen, aka "El Maestro" the true master, do "Far Beyond the Sun"
an amazing composer too, he even played with an orchestra
I saw Eddie play live, also Michael Anthony did a bass solo, and his brother Alex Van Halen did a kickass drum solo, it was a great concert, 1984 Tour.
Truthfully Malmsteen is much better than EVH. But EVH was the great innovator. But so is Malmsteen.
