    I've watched probably a dozen reactions to this video and you're the first one who recognized that Eddie was turning the volume knob during that one segment. That's how he makes it sound like it is bowed like a violin. He turns the volume down, plays the note and then quickly turns the volume up. By doing that, it hides the "attack" of the note but then fades into the note, making it sound like it is played with a bow.

    • @Prozak63
      @Prozak63 2 роки тому +3

      Exactly. And speaking of bow instruments check out anything by "2Cellos". Mindblowing.

      Not sure if it the volume or the gain he is using...

    • @mikemiller3069
      @mikemiller3069 Рік тому +3

      @@shamelessbastardgames9158 It's the volume knob on the guitar. I've done that technique (I'm not as good at it as Eddie but it's a cool effect). All instruments have what they call an "envelope" which can be mapped out showing the attack, sustain and decay of the instrument. By starting with the volume down and then fading it in quickly, it hides the normally quick attack of a guitar pick. It makes it sound more like a bowed instrument like a violin.

    • @shamelessbastardgames9158

      @@mikemiller3069 I am a drummer not a guitarists so i will take your word for it ..

    • @mikemiller3069
      @mikemiller3069 Рік тому

      @@shamelessbastardgames9158 The most similar thing related to drums that I can think of is when they "gate" the drums. It is done in the sound system whether recording or live when, sometimes the drums might ring on a little too long and not sound as clean as you want. The sound person uses a noise gate which shortens the ring by fading it out quicker, thereby cleaning up the mix. But the gate is used on the decay part of the drum's envelope whereas the technique Eddie was using is on the attack. It's hard to explain other than that but I hope it made sense.

    I've watched this a hundred times at the least. And his life story. It's amazing he came to America and had to learn English. He was a piano and drum player and never learned to read music. Built his own guitars because he couldn't afford to buy the good stuff. Listen to Michael Jacksons...beat it. That's him. He did it free of charge

    102 seconds, is how long it took a young guitar player from Pasadena to change rock guitar forever. The finger-tapping technique Eddie Van Halen deployed on “Eruption,” the guitar solo from Van Halen's 1978 debut album was not new, musicians had been tapping fretboards of instruments for generations. But the speed, dexterity & rich tone he brought to it was so unprecedented it sent a generation of guitarists scurrying back to the woodshed, trying to figure out how Eddie made his trademark sound. Though thousands (millions?) of metal & hard-rock guitarists have mimicked his technique & tone since, none has equaled the virtuosity of “Eruption.” There's only one "Eddie Van Halen" period!

      guitar soloing like this is waay harder than it looks.
      Ed was a master guitarist, a master innovator, a master performer and master showman.
      You can have great chops, lots of technique and speed, but that doesn't mean you're a guitar god. If you cannot interest and engage your audience, you're wasting everyone's time, and Ed would be the first person to say just that.
      Following in the path of an icebreaker is a lot easier than being the icebreaker.
