It’s my favourite animation in the whole game. Whenever I eat chicken pieces, I strip the meat off clean from the bone and then consume it. The voodoo animation on the butcher reminds me of it and also plays into the black humour of this game as a whole. Symbolic of how killing all of these terrible beasts with these horrible weapons is just like eating a meal for the undead gunslinger.

2 fun facts about the Voodoo doll: 1. The Alternate Fire mode that uses up all the ammo count on the voodoo doll applies to ALL targets in your visual range. As a fun test, Go back to the Carnival level, use cheats to give yourself all weapons, then head into the Jojo Exibit with the snake pit, look at the crowd of cultists, use the Voodoo Dolls Alt fire, and laugh hysterically as it wipes them all out! 2. The Voodoo Doll is one of the most sinister weapons in death match. Not only does using it against your opponents leave no evidence of where the damage is coming from, where the doll is struck has different effects on your opponent: chest does normal damage, Eyes darkens their screen briefly, Arm makes them actually drop their current weapon, and Groin does 50 damage + temporarily blinds them with a red screen and slows them from running to walking speed.
Fun fact: the butcher's ranged cleaver attack deals spirit damage for some reason, which means that zombies killed by it will have the same death animation as if killed by a voodoo doll.
Blood has a good deal of particular damage types going on, it's pretty neat. For example; fire armor absorbs explosive damage; stone gargoyles, hellhounds, and Cerburus are all impervious to fire; primary fire flares do a pinch of physical damage on hit, phantasms only take damage from physical attacks (like melee & lead), and stone gargoyles have invincible frames while their eyes are lit up from shooting eye beams.
Yeah i noticed that. Also in the original game, which i only had i didnt even know post mortem existed until youtube, the voodoo doll had a glitch where if you used the special attack, with the codes on, you couldnt use it anymore.

Range is one way to go about it, and different damage types with affiliated weaknesses and resistances is another cool way to go about it as Blood demonstrated. With that in mind, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on another way to go about it: having defences that are dealt with based on a weapon's rate of fire. I've seen it done before in games like FTL and Ironcast, both concerning their respective versions of energy shields. In FTL, Shields block a single hit from blasters, no matter how much damage they would otherwise have dealt, which is effective against heavy hitter projectiles (except for missiles), but can be worn down by a high rate of fire. Meanwhile, in Ironcast, Shields subtract damage from individual hits, which is more effective against weapons that inflict multiple hits but have low damage per hit (Light Cannons, Shotcannons, Pulse Repeaters, etc), but at the same time it can be punched through by a good old-fashioned heavy hitter. (Heavy Cannons, Energy Lances, Missile Launchers, etc) I'd personally be game to see those kinds of defences in a shooter, since it'd help increase the variety of unique enemies you could do, which would in turn allow for ever more varied enemy encounters. Especially on top of having range, damage types, and splash resistance to play around with. Though of course, it'd be wise to not pile too many kinds of defences onto non-boss enemies. And even wiser would be having enemies allude to their resistances and vulnerabilities through their design, since it's not only clever to allude to how best to handle your enemies, but it's also important to be able to know, on the fly, what kind of weapon is right for the job.
Fun fact: scuba gear existed as early as the late 1800s. However, it was sorta clunky up until some french guys invented modern scuba gear during WWII.
I'm pretty sure the Italians came up with their own system as well during WWII - look up Flottiglia Decima MAS - those guys were fucking insane. They had drivable torpedoes they would use to performs raids on British ports.
Yeah, though they're still easy to deal with if you got a Tesla cannon or Voodoo doll. Civvie using the Vodoo doll's alternate fire is a waste since it takes all the ammo and deals less than spamming the primary fire.

Cool little unintended workaround for the water suit: if you "use" it while underwater, it will be turned off before restarting after a short delay - doing this continuously will make its lifespan at least twice as long
I was about to comment this, only a year too late. I bound mine to mouse 3 so I always can press it to remove it, I get like four, five, even six times the use as long as I'm not in combat.

lol like how Robert Rodriguez goes from making movies full of guns, violence blood, ect, ect. Then goes and makes spy kids and shark boy and lava girl with his kid. Or George Miller Directs mad max and some twilight zone stuff, goes on to do the Happy Feet and Babe movies before returning to Mad Max. There are a few actor or directors that have very broad range of work. I imagine in some cases though it's probably more because it pays they bills than it's simply a project they believe in. @Tw1st3dG4m3r Claw's pretty fukken' badass for his world, tho. Not every cat can platform like he does, make a repeater out of a flintlock or send out Hadokens through half the map. Plus, he and Caleb have one thing in common: both know VERY well how to handle bundles of TNT (and in a way that feels intuitive to the player too).
Some things I learned playing this game on lightly broiled; Go slowly and take your time. There is a time to be an unstoppable death machine and their is a time to be a careful assassin. You can usually edge around corners and see the enemy sitting still at his spawn point. If you rush, you’ll alert them and the enemies you can’t see. They will all fire at you together and you’ll feel like John Marston at the end of RDR. the shotgun alt fire (he fires both barrels at once) can put the flesh gargoyles into a pain state, letting you get in a few more shots before he flys away like he’s high on meth. Speaking of gargoyles, they can’t hit you while you are crouched. Not even Cheog. The flare gun’s primary fire deals damage on impact with the target and also deals trickle damage while the flare is stuck in them. A single flare round can kill axe zombies and cultists thanks to that extra burning damage. Quick save often. Preferably after large encounters that you’ve finished with an acceptable amount of health. Caleb tosses dynamite in an arc like a cornhole bag as opposed to pitching it like a baseball. If you toss dynamite with a full charge while aiming right at the intended target you will either hit the ceiling of the room your in and kill yourself, or you’ll fling it right over their heads. Aim below the feet of your target, with the vertical crosshair notches parallel with your future victim. Then release and fling that TNT bundle at them. On the subject of TNT, unaware enemies do not react to anything until they’ve been damaged or they’ve spotted you. You can toss a live bundle of TNT at them with the alt fire, eyeball a primary fire toss, or just plain shoot at them. They will not move a muscle until they’ve been hit. Use it to your advantage. Lastly, dynamite slides like its on ice when thrown with the alt fire. Keep that in mind. Oh, and if you alt fire dynamite and then alt fire again, you’ll drop it right where you stand. Aaand doors don’t push dynamite out of the way when opened. Allowing you to drop a live bundle in front of a door, open it from the side so the enemy doesn’t see you, then get out the way to watch the explosion gib enemies standing at the threshold waiting to kill you.
I always felt the reason Opehelia, Ishmial and especially Gabriel/Gabriella looked different in the sequel is because they were given new human bodies, probably took over other people's bodies. Their original bodies were burnt, ripped open and all that. Also explains why Gabriel becomes a Cajun woman. I mean technically their design in B1's cutscene is just bald Caleb clones in different clothes for the artist to save resources.
@@TheBreakingBenny It is interesting that only Blood 2's model got it right, which was just Ash from Evil Dead style hair. The model and even death match sprite when you decap Caleb in B1 is a bald head. And in all of the B2 promo art is is long hair. The actual B2 model has short hair, though.
I learned about this game from Civvie. Never heard about it before then. Bought the remaster on Steam two years ago after watching these videos and gave it a shot. I'm not a fan of horror movies, but I can appreciate them for their artistic value, so seeing all the references to all those classic horror movies even made me smile. The hedge maze and hotel is probably my favorite level in this game. It's kind of amazing how this game is even better than Civvie made it sound.
Even when I played that game as a kid I adored sound design of levels. Wind in my earphones, sound of stops , screams of enemies - everything is on top level.
I wasn't able to play this game as a kid because of the phantasms and their sounds. I was taken completely by surprise by them in the Dark Carnival level, and I remember needing to look away from the screen because I couldn't handle how their face looks up close, and that terrifying sound. Ughh.
The final cutscene of this chapter is one of the greatest (despite its low resolution and questionable 3D models) scenes in all videogames: the tone, the music, the coldness in Caleb's voice as he has to do what he has to do to go on...plus, citing the Bible as he rummages Gabriel's entrails, tearing, ripping what is probably a mummified remnant of a person he calls "friend" as he desacrates his mortal remains: perfection. A notch too high and it would have been edgy, a notch too low and it would have been cheesy. But instead: balance of dark humor, irriverence and real terror, especially as the camera pans back and you can still see Shial, already trampled by Caleb's boots, squirming in agony as her blood and live stream out of the chitinous shell.
Should let everyone know that gargoyles are insanely weak to the voodoo doll. Just with the regular fire, too. Like three or four stabs on lightly broiled.

I absolutely adore Episode 2 of Blood. I enjoy arctic/snowy environments in FPS games in general, but in Blood it fits so perfectly, and the atmosphere is so spot-on that if we think of games as novels, that Episode 2 is a freakin' book of poetry!

I got stuck on the overlooked hotel my first time playing and it resulted in me doing like 10 circles around the whole place looking for a door or key I missed.
When played on Extra Crispy, the finale of Episode 1 features not one, but TWO gargoyles, each rocking 8,192 health. Beating the game on that skill(once or twice) becomes a much more feasible prospect once the napalm launcher and tesla gun are in play, but the only possible way to defeat them early game is to either pitchfork yourself some cheese by aggressively crouching at them, or to do so after unloading your entire arsenal on them, to maintain your honor. It is a game best played like Shadow Warrior and the Dooms.
I don't really get the voodoo doll's secondary fire. In my experience it barely does any damage to Cheogh at all, let alone enough to justify using all of your ammo in a single attack. On the other hand, if you just bounce around and spam the primary fire, you can down Cheogh (Well Done) in like 30 shots.
While playing this episode i found out that butchers are straight up unable to hit you with their puke projectile while you're crouching, doesn't stop them from spamming it though. Also, in The Haunting two normal gargoyles took a dive in a tiny pool and died instantly from going underwater. And the fight against Shial was just weird, she goes idle if she loses line of sight on you. That together with her being super tanky for a gangly spider which gets bounced around by your shots made me wonder if the game was working right. I didn't even think she was the boss since there were two of her.
“The one (hand) in Evil Dead 2 never really talked” It does. When he knocks out Ash with the bottle in the kitchen and begins dragging him toward weapon crank up the volume. You’ll hear it grunting in exertion and then go “get up!”
I bought the game and beat this episode today after watching this. Great overview and great game. p.s. Civvie you have a great narrator voice for games, keep it up!
I only played through this game once, a few months ago, and the enemy sounds are still burned into my brain- which is a good thing- goddamn the sound design is kickass.
If you crouch/circle strafe underneath Cheogh while spamming the primary fire of the voodoo doll, you can easily cheese any encounter with him. It will actually save ammo for the voodoo doll if you do this too, as apposed to using up all of the ammunition with the secondary fire.
Seeing your Blood videos got me interested in playing this game again. I went to my Steam Library to reinstall it and then found a nice news article at the bottom. Apparently Blood is getting remastered. Hope this turns out good.
I got this game after seeing this gameplay series. I had always heard of blood growing up and never got to play. I later heard it was one of the last Doom engine games, but really it is the last Build engine game, which is the Duke Nukem 3D engine. Anyway, I figured I'd play on the second hardest difficulty, after all, I am a PRO at old school games. But no, I got my ass kicked and it wasn't fun. I didn't know the weapons, enemies or map layouts at all, but after playing on "lightly broiled" for the first episode, I decided to play on "well done" and now that I am familiar with the game, it is much more playable and fun! This game is a serious challenge, and I REALLY love this game! Too bad I never played it as a kid. But I'm glad to at least be playing it now.

Episode two really lets you get an idea of how perfect the movement is. Few games since have let you be as fast yet precise. Also on the subject of Lovecraft, this was well before he made his way into the mainstream consciousness. The devs were absolute chads to have been fans and reference his works in-game.

Hey Civvie, I'm guessing someone here's mentioned it already, but in case they haven't: The Blood DeathWish mod is fantastic in both the original engine and in BloodGDX, and I consider it to be better in almost every way than the original game (vanilla assets used more creatively, things like the Reflect Orb and Jump Boots being more common and more usable, more interesting and rewarding secrets, etc.) I haven't seen anyone else on UA-cam do the mod a proper justice. And no amount of videogame perfection can scrub Blood 2 from the collective brainmatter of the world.
I'm so glad i found this channel, I've owned the gog release of blood for a while but just started to fully appreciate it with BLOOD GDX. Your videos are hilarious please keep making them.
I also found it strange that Blood had to have multiples of Cheogh and Shial at the end of Episodes 1 and 2. I think that's a borrowing from Heretic. Heretic tended to have multiple versions of the Iron Lich and of the Maulotaurs. I sometimes think having multiples of an episode's final boss takes away from the uniqueness of the bosses. If Blood had Cheogh and Shial to be much bigger, and the regular sized Cheoghs and Shials being the original bosses' reinforcements, then I think it would've worked better. The fight with Shial is not as emotionally dramatic as the one with Cheogh, but at least it had you see Gabriel bound in web. Episode 3 doesn't allow you to see the remains of Ishmael. Even though Caleb drinking from Gabriel's heart is a dirt move, I liked the way he said "Forgive me, old friend." before removing his (or her) heart. It's seems that Caleb shows rare moments of genuine feeling whenever he's around his fallen comrades. I too think that Blood 2 should've had Gabriel confront Caleb for eating her heart after she came back to life. It would've provided a lot of humorous dialogue at Caleb's expense.
It's just a thing in older games. I like it. Makes you feel stronger, like you're improving. Has an epic feel to it. I understand your perspective though.
Well, these can be thought of as mother spiders and stone gargoyles, respectively. Not specific named characters, but rather others of the same (or slightly less) power and appearance.
idk the maulotaur fight in heretic is a lot more intimidating when there's 3 of the fuckers coming to smash your fucking skull in, it just depends if its like a named specific character or just some big fucker they use as like an ultimate guardian
One of my all time favorites. Fyi the best weapon against stone gargoyles is the voodoo doll, it's best to save it for them. The primary fire btw it only takes about 50-60 doll ammo to kill em.

Cool little unintended workaround for the water suit: if you "use" it while underwater, it will be turned off before restarting after a short delay - doing this continuously will make its lifespan at least twice as long
I was about to comment this, only a year too late.
I bound mine to mouse 3 so I always can press it to remove it, I get like four, five, even six times the use as long as I'm not in combat.

There are a few actor or directors that have very broad range of work. I imagine in some cases though it's probably more because it pays they bills than it's simply a project they believe in. Claw's pretty fukken' badass for his world, tho. Not every cat can platform like he does, make a repeater out of a flintlock or send out Hadokens through half the map.
Plus, he and Caleb have one thing in common: both know VERY well how to handle bundles of TNT (and in a way that feels intuitive to the player too).
Honestly Jim Cummings as the Terror Mask is my favorite performance by him.

Phantasms have to be one of the scariest enemies in any game. That scream is so well designed that it still makes me shiver to this day.
Some things I learned playing this game on lightly broiled; Go slowly and take your time. There is a time to be an unstoppable death machine and their is a time to be a careful assassin. You can usually edge around corners and see the enemy sitting still at his spawn point. If you rush, you’ll alert them and the enemies you can’t see. They will all fire at you together and you’ll feel like John Marston at the end of RDR.
the shotgun alt fire (he fires both barrels at once) can put the flesh gargoyles into a pain state, letting you get in a few more shots before he flys away like he’s high on meth.
Speaking of gargoyles, they can’t hit you while you are crouched. Not even Cheog.
The flare gun’s primary fire deals damage on impact with the target and also deals trickle damage while the flare is stuck in them. A single flare round can kill axe zombies and cultists thanks to that extra burning damage.
Quick save often. Preferably after large encounters that you’ve finished with an acceptable amount of health.
Caleb tosses dynamite in an arc like a cornhole bag as opposed to pitching it like a baseball. If you toss dynamite with a full charge while aiming right at the intended target you will either hit the ceiling of the room your in and kill yourself, or you’ll fling it right over their heads. Aim below the feet of your target, with the vertical crosshair notches parallel with your future victim. Then release and fling that TNT bundle at them.
On the subject of TNT, unaware enemies do not react to anything until they’ve been damaged or they’ve spotted you. You can toss a live bundle of TNT at them with the alt fire, eyeball a primary fire toss, or just plain shoot at them. They will not move a muscle until they’ve been hit. Use it to your advantage.
Lastly, dynamite slides like its on ice when thrown with the alt fire. Keep that in mind. Oh, and if you alt fire dynamite and then alt fire again, you’ll drop it right where you stand. Aaand doors don’t push dynamite out of the way when opened. Allowing you to drop a live bundle in front of a door, open it from the side so the enemy doesn’t see you, then get out the way to watch the explosion gib enemies standing at the threshold waiting to kill you.
I always felt the reason Opehelia, Ishmial and especially Gabriel/Gabriella looked different in the sequel is because they were given new human bodies, probably took over other people's bodies. Their original bodies were burnt, ripped open and all that. Also explains why Gabriel becomes a Cajun woman. I mean technically their design in B1's cutscene is just bald Caleb clones in different clothes for the artist to save resources.
The people who made these FMVs also were of average talent, and never got informed that Caleb isn't bald.
@@TheBreakingBenny It is interesting that only Blood 2's model got it right, which was just Ash from Evil Dead style hair. The model and even death match sprite when you decap Caleb in B1 is a bald head. And in all of the B2 promo art is is long hair. The actual B2 model has short hair, though.

I learned about this game from Civvie. Never heard about it before then. Bought the remaster on Steam two years ago after watching these videos and gave it a shot.
I'm not a fan of horror movies, but I can appreciate them for their artistic value, so seeing all the references to all those classic horror movies even made me smile. The hedge maze and hotel is probably my favorite level in this game. It's kind of amazing how this game is even better than Civvie made it sound.

Even when I played that game as a kid I adored sound design of levels. Wind in my earphones, sound of stops , screams of enemies - everything is on top level.

I wasn't able to play this game as a kid because of the phantasms and their sounds. I was taken completely by surprise by them in the Dark Carnival level, and I remember needing to look away from the screen because I couldn't handle how their face looks up close, and that terrifying sound. Ughh.
Except for all the Homer Simpson screams.

The final cutscene of this chapter is one of the greatest (despite its low resolution and questionable 3D models) scenes in all videogames: the tone, the music, the coldness in Caleb's voice as he has to do what he has to do to go on...plus, citing the Bible as he rummages Gabriel's entrails, tearing, ripping what is probably a mummified remnant of a person he calls "friend" as he desacrates his mortal remains: perfection. A notch too high and it would have been edgy, a notch too low and it would have been cheesy. But instead: balance of dark humor, irriverence and real terror, especially as the camera pans back and you can still see Shial, already trampled by Caleb's boots, squirming in agony as her blood and live stream out of the chitinous shell.

Reminds me of C&C FMV cutscenes. Dated, but the charm and passion of the moments sure outweigh the flaws.

I absolutely adore Episode 2 of Blood. I enjoy arctic/snowy environments in FPS games in general, but in Blood it fits so perfectly, and the atmosphere is so spot-on that if we think of games as novels, that Episode 2 is a freakin' book of poetry!

I got stuck on the overlooked hotel my first time playing and it resulted in me doing like 10 circles around the whole place looking for a door or key I missed.
That fucking Duke Nukem Overlook hotel map looked super terrifying
When played on Extra Crispy, the finale of Episode 1 features not one, but TWO gargoyles, each rocking 8,192 health. Beating the game on that skill(once or twice) becomes a much more feasible prospect once the napalm launcher and tesla gun are in play, but the only possible way to defeat them early game is to either pitchfork yourself some cheese by aggressively crouching at them, or to do so after unloading your entire arsenal on them, to maintain your honor. It is a game best played like Shadow Warrior and the Dooms.
Can we also appreciate the amazing music in this episode/game? Eerie and atmospheric as hell.
I don't really get the voodoo doll's secondary fire. In my experience it barely does any damage to Cheogh at all, let alone enough to justify using all of your ammo in a single attack. On the other hand, if you just bounce around and spam the primary fire, you can down Cheogh (Well Done) in like 30 shots.
While playing this episode i found out that butchers are straight up unable to hit you with their puke projectile while you're crouching, doesn't stop them from spamming it though. Also, in The Haunting two normal gargoyles took a dive in a tiny pool and died instantly from going underwater. And the fight against Shial was just weird, she goes idle if she loses line of sight on you. That together with her being super tanky for a gangly spider which gets bounced around by your shots made me wonder if the game was working right. I didn't even think she was the boss since there were two of her.

I believe when me and a friend watched a full playthrough of the game, we called the butcher enemies Mr. Potsdan, a reference to Harvester.
The Spray Can is actually the answer for all the small crawling enemies.
I only played through this game once, a few months ago, and the enemy sounds are still burned into my brain- which is a good thing- goddamn the sound design is kickass.

If you crouch/circle strafe underneath Cheogh while spamming the primary fire of the voodoo doll, you can easily cheese any encounter with him. It will actually save ammo for the voodoo doll if you do this too, as apposed to using up all of the ammunition with the secondary fire.
Seeing your Blood videos got me interested in playing this game again. I went to my Steam Library to reinstall it and then found a nice news article at the bottom.
Apparently Blood is getting remastered. Hope this turns out good.

I got this game after seeing this gameplay series. I had always heard of blood growing up and never got to play. I later heard it was one of the last Doom engine games, but really it is the last Build engine game, which is the Duke Nukem 3D engine. Anyway, I figured I'd play on the second hardest difficulty, after all, I am a PRO at old school games. But no, I got my ass kicked and it wasn't fun. I didn't know the weapons, enemies or map layouts at all, but after playing on "lightly broiled" for the first episode, I decided to play on "well done" and now that I am familiar with the game, it is much more playable and fun! This game is a serious challenge, and I REALLY love this game! Too bad I never played it as a kid. But I'm glad to at least be playing it now.

I bought this game before Pro Blood. But this video showed me unique secrets that really helped.
Episode two really lets you get an idea of how perfect the movement is. Few games since have let you be as fast yet precise.
Also on the subject of Lovecraft, this was well before he made his way into the mainstream consciousness. The devs were absolute chads to have been fans and reference his works in-game.

Hey Civvie, I'm guessing someone here's mentioned it already, but in case they haven't:
The Blood DeathWish mod is fantastic in both the original engine and in BloodGDX, and I consider it to be better in almost every way than the original game (vanilla assets used more creatively, things like the Reflect Orb and Jump Boots being more common and more usable, more interesting and rewarding secrets, etc.)
I haven't seen anyone else on UA-cam do the mod a proper justice.
And no amount of videogame perfection can scrub Blood 2 from the collective brainmatter of the world.
I'm glad your episodes are now over half an hour so nothing is lost.
Always loved how 'Invisibility' gives you invisibility in this game compared to others where you are seen as soon as you shoot.

At 6:13 it sounds like Sean from Jimmy Nuetron saying "Cooool!" After seeing his friend slammed into the wall. I love this game so damn much.
I also found it strange that Blood had to have multiples of Cheogh and Shial at the end of Episodes 1 and 2. I think that's a borrowing from Heretic. Heretic tended to have multiple versions of the Iron Lich and of the Maulotaurs. I sometimes think having multiples of an episode's final boss takes away from the uniqueness of the bosses. If Blood had Cheogh and Shial to be much bigger, and the regular sized Cheoghs and Shials being the original bosses' reinforcements, then I think it would've worked better. The fight with Shial is not as emotionally dramatic as the one with Cheogh, but at least it had you see Gabriel bound in web. Episode 3 doesn't allow you to see the remains of Ishmael. Even though Caleb drinking from Gabriel's heart is a dirt move, I liked the way he said "Forgive me, old friend." before removing his (or her) heart. It's seems that Caleb shows rare moments of genuine feeling whenever he's around his fallen comrades. I too think that Blood 2 should've had Gabriel confront Caleb for eating her heart after she came back to life. It would've provided a lot of humorous dialogue at Caleb's expense.
Wizardry 7 did the same, on harder difficulty it spawned even two of the final boss.
It's just a thing in older games. I like it. Makes you feel stronger, like you're improving. Has an epic feel to it. I understand your perspective though.

idk the maulotaur fight in heretic is a lot more intimidating when there's 3 of the fuckers coming to smash your fucking skull in, it just depends if its like a named specific character or just some big fucker they use as like an ultimate guardian
