people usually get the idea when the ship called “IMMINENT COLLISION” is heading towards then with no sign of slowing
Named mine sharkbait. I have bad (or good if you look at it right) luck with megs. On one hand, enemy ship deterrent. On the other, meg.
@@LostLich No shit used to play on an NAL team called sharkbait
@@LostLichNamed mine Ol' Moe Lester, instills fear in its enemies souls
@@cuckholdsimulator1176 Wtf I couldn't name my cat "Lester"
I always knew charging my sloop straight into the galleon was the best plan
Lol
Some random galleon crew just sailing and all of a sudden they see a little sloop sailing straight for them and hear 'This is the greatest plaaaaaaan!'
You can but then you might have 4 guys on your ship lol
@@zytha2890 happened to me lmao it was a accidental ram on my part I solo sloop and am still learning (most of my friends don't really play) and I was looking at the map and didn't see the gall next thing I know I crash and 3 or 4 guys are on me and I die and they alliance me after seeing I wasn't even a threat in the slightest
This will definitely help me out when I sail my sloop named "The Ram Strat."
Element of surprise
’RAM STRAT BEST STRAT!’
Ram Rat
@@jonathonredacted3396 No I dont think ram strat is good and I dont use it often but (RAM STRAT BEST STRAT) thats something my friend says all the time
I hop the is not in the name otherwise you say it as the “the ram strat”
I have a very fun ship called "beep beep". It's a galleon with the keg cosmetics. We go around gathering kegs until we find someone and store them all in the very front of our boat on all decks.
Then, we ram someone (usually harpoon them during ram for good measure) and set them off.
Somehow, we never sink but the enemy always does. Probably because it's not exactly something you expect.
"Kaboom?"
Yes Rico, Kaboom.
I love this.
This is what I love about games like _Sea of Thieves:_ Every once in a while, you stumble upon a mechanic or interaction that is worth taking the time to investigate, and after doing so, you've reduced it to a science and are able to add it to your repertoire. Who knew that ramming was actually viable in the right context? Good find, Phuzzy!
This is correct. Two sloop going at similar speeds that barely bump into each other can also cause 3 hole to one of the sloop and one small one to the other. This is important because the hit box isn't always consistent and when your at speed and bump into another sloop you may get 3 holes. Even if it doesn't seem justified.
@𝕋𝕖𝕩𝕥 𝕄𝕖 𝕆𝕟 𝕋𝕖𝕝𝕖𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕞 @PhuzzyBond1 This is phoney right?
@@allenmayo718yes don’t fall for it!!!
I love how Phuzzy is so inquisitive and how he always optimizes game mechanics use in combat
There's also a technique I call slide ramming, where you ram head on and then proceed to scrape the side of your ship against theirs. It's specifically for sloop vs galleon, you both get your sides completely filled with holes, but it takes longer for them to get back in the fight because they have more holes than you.
That's a nice idea! Risky but sounds fun
@@PhuzzyBond I'm the sort of person who loads my boat full of kegs to ram lol risky but fun is my whole thing.
@@IsfetSolariswhat an absolute mad lad. Kamikaze sloop

This is why this guy is one of the most skilled players in SoT. It's because he is so technical and strategic with every little detail, like a master chess player. He takes the time to analyze anything and everything for the sake of knowledge and becoming better at the game. I didn't even know ship holes had tiers to them! It's thanks to his thorough investigation into the games mechanics that average players like myself are able to learn so much more about the depths of this game! Great stuff, Phuzzy.
Correct, but most people have lives outside of gaming and aren't going to put that much effort into a hobby that has no real impact on life. It's pretty easy to be "one of the most skilled players" when most people don't put much effort into trying. No hate on Phuzzy tho
@@simpletora7313 Yeesh you must be fun at parties.
This is actually quite interesting.
One thing I've noticed is that the bowsprit (the big stick on the front of the ship where you shout movie lines from) doesn't seem to always transfer damage. Much of the time, slamming the bowsprit into another ship will centralize all the damage into one spot - the very front of the ship - rather than it damaging significant portions of the hull. This applies best to the sloop and brigantine, which only have space for one hole in the front, as although they are upper deck holes the galleon will often sustain two - although it's also rather difficult to intentionally get the galleon's bowsprit into the target, due to the height of the ship. This can even apply to islands, although I couldn't tell you exactly how since usually my island impact damage just doesn't get applied regardless of speed, and I've no clue how.
So nice to see a video on this, the other day i lost a 1v1 pvp and at first it seemed bs, the guy rammed me 4 times, each time he boarded, got killed by me and that gave me time to put some extra cannonballs on his ship, aswell as a couple shots i always hit before he rammed into my side, he never sunk, 1 time he managed 1 blundie me after the usual ram and before i could respawn i had already sunken, the wierdest thing is how cannons only put holes in ships, but ramming seems to instantly add a quarter of the water the moment the holes are made, once youre rammed you can go check and theres at least a couple buckets worth of water already on the ship
Now my buddy feels validated ramming the enemy ships… thanks phuzzy 😢 this has become the “main strat”
Thanks. phuzzy! I figured the same out today too in 1v1 sloop combat.
I boarded their ship, killed the guy but he had no holes. Luckily both ships were turning and mine hit the other sloop in the side. Gave 3 holes and sank fast. I thought my ship was gonna have the same faith, but when I returned to my ship, all it had was 1 tier 1 hole in the front.
Thank you for your time to research this!
My crew once didn't have enough cannon balls for a skelly fleet we resorted to raming and boarding exclusively. It worked.
Fun fact:
Ramming was historically the best method to sink ships until canons were a common weapon on ships.
*shudders in Carthage when the Roman's figured out how to do it better*
@@The_Dork_Lord Romans didn't ram better.
They just thought "hey, we're kinda shit in these sea battles... let's put a bridge on our ships and make them land battles instead!" xD
Pretty sure Carthage rammed better prove me wrong tho I'm not sure
As a solo slooper, ramming is my favorite strategy. Usually, other players do not expect it. It's boring - it takes almost no talent. But it's highly effective when your opponent is better than you on cannons. Ram them to the bottom of the sea!
If they are good on canons, they really should be able to light up the incoming ship while taking no punishment until the ram happens
@@MDMDMDMDMDMDMDMDMD Yeah.... sometimes it works, indeed. And I can tell you that sometimes, it doesn't.
I have to imagine the only real counter someone could do if you're already lined up for the TBone is to either drop the anchor immediately to maybe dodge or aim a chainshot for the mast of the rammer
@@Bobalini1 you just shoot them. They can't shoot you, you can shoot them
@@Bobalini1 Yeah that would work lol
well there we have it, from the man himself - ram strat best strat
thanks for this video, this is a detail I never thought about, but now that I know its just one more tool in the playbook ^^
You know the saying of "Ram Strat, Best Strat"? Well here, Phuzzy has helped to perfect the strat to make it as effective as possible for players.
Thanks for crunching the numbers and sharing
I do believe that ramstrats at the begining of attrition is really recommended, but not to leave it for the scarce of cannonballs, make use of the holes you made through the fight, get the ram done and try to board, then finish it though cannoning along a minimal of 20-40 cannonballs. Don't give broad that much though cause you'll get demasted pretty fast, and ofc this is only valid for the sloop, brigs and galleons are out of the equation, pretty vulnerable on ramstrat.
Highly educative video for pvp rooks to intermediates, cheers.
Thank you for doing Sea of Science.
Its nice to see how all of your experiments play out.

Truly a man of science
Great job, thank you!
Very nice, this has always been a gambling game for me. Thank you! :)
Last encounter with a brig as solo sloop I rammed into the back of it from the side, glanced off and continued sailing against the wind. Still got sunk though because of cliffs and a damn storm
thanks mate i use ram strat a lot !!
Ill say it again “RAM STRAT IS THE BEST STRAT”
Would be insane if Rare added a purchasable ram for your ship like in AC Black Flag. Could be a game changer for those of us who play with clueless randoms. My randoms often have 0 xp with cannons so being able to damage a ship as the captain, to make up for my shit teammates would make me so happy
You forgot to include the sloop that's full of kegs that'll kamikaze the other ship.
No other factors involved; some ships are grown from all-natural black powder and remain volatile throughout their exceptionally short lives.
Hey Phuzzy, can you make a guide on how to effectively use the harpoon in combat? It seems underutilized, even when it can often win people naval battles.
I'll do my best ☺️
@@PhuzzyBond Good enough for me!
plz, don't do this new players because against a good crew, they will put holes in almost every part of your ship and you will sink with a chain and a spiral, just a heads up from an old player. I am not saying that you should never do this, but more often than not i don't recommend. But that is just my oppinion
Thanks fuzzy, now everyone tries to ram me :D
Love using my ship as a battering ram!
This helped me fight 2 skeleton galeons for the fight of the seas but suffered extreme bombardment to my sloop and sank both
One question remains, to ram or not to ram, surely ramming isn't always the best strat? Can we have a follow up advising in which situation is it a viable option maybe compile previous recordings where you chose to and explain why you did...
Ramming is almost never the best strat, don't get me wrong its fun asf but if you're ever in a position where ramming is your best option you're probably screwed anyway
@@thealmightyuntensil2368 Agreed, ramming either positions you in an unfavorable position, or a neutral position as far as cannons are concerned. The holes created by a ram aren't really that damaging compared to what cannons can do. Ramming is fun, but not optimal.
Not that I will start ramming more often but it was good to know.
Merci ❤ Phuzzy !!!!
Ram firebomb is my favourite combo
Ramming can be a powerful and effective way to show people that you don't know what you're doing.
how me and my buddies play sea of thieves: RAMMING SPEEEEEDDD!!!!
one thing I want to do eventually is make a three-ship alliance with two galleons and a sloop and just have the two galleon crews clowncar on the sloop lmao
This explains everyhing why skeleton ships likes to RAM a Lot. RAMMING SPEED!! XD
Been doing this since the game started thought everyone knew about it
Time to practice The Ram Strat
This will help me with taking out galleons who wanna ruin my tall tales
i could say my last burning blade aquisition was via a Ram of faith.
Bros fighting fire with fire
I'm going to need a ram figurehead for the ram strat please Rare.
Love a good ram!
What about self damage? Is ramming someone equally hurtfull or the rammer receives less damage?
For the initial ram, yes. Anything after that depends on how you scrape against the other ship. I wouldn't image you'd take more damage though. The reasoning I am using, is because the initial ram will likely cause the most damage, and the front of the ship is the strongest.
Start of the video. You take 1 hole at the front
Self damage is less, but getting hit with cannons during the ram is the main problem. If they smack you with cannons, you're taking more holes. Also, if you ram then board, they can still bucket or repair on respawn, which will keep them alive longer. This is assuming they are focused on repairs and not killing you. You job boarding is not to kill them necessarily, but to keep them from bilging or doing anything other than fighting you. You're a distraction.
new meta discovered
. Now I know why hourglass has had more ramming
Man doing big brain. teaching the community to ram so he can get easy wins when he battles ppl following his advise
hehehehehehehehehehehehehe
I'm going to try some keg based shenanigans using this information
I love the scientific method
Ram strag best strag!!!!
Ramm attack is the best attack
Unfortunately for me, this information comes too late, as another sloop rammed the side of my sloop yesterday, and I sunk much faster than expected, despite having hit him with many more cannons.
Imagine if sea of thieves added rams that you could buy and put on your ship
Every single time I ram a brig or a galeon with my sloop 2-3 ppl board me. Never regret it once. Might call my ship the Sloopiest Sadist.
Not kidding I was in PvP two days ago vs a runner, when a 2nr reaper showed up to help him. I kill them both n get my patched up then the 2nd reaper rammed me and gave me FIVE LOWER HOLES!! A couple were tier 2/3s also and even though they were awful fake sweats and couldn't hit a shot I sank while killing the boarders. I'm still livid bc they were so cocky and I woulda won that 11/10 times. HOW DO I GET HOLES ON MY LEFT WHEN HE RAMS MY RIGHT LADDER?!?! k I'm done I just had to get that out thx
Once used this in a skeleton sloop fight cause we where out of cannon balls
Has it occurred to you why this happens? It’s not that the boats stronger, the other ships have relatively way more holes locations and typically more players on board to repair those holes.
What hulk is he using in the video?
I was sloop vs sloop last night and got rammed on the right side, I had no idea how damaging ramming another ship could be. I thought he rammed into my ship out of frustration because he was missing his shots.
Ramming is risky, but if done right can really be a game changer, people usually under estimate the damage if not aware of it's physics
@@PhuzzyBond I’m still new to the game. But I had to look up ramming info because I was shocked at how much damage it did. Thanks for this video, though.
Most welcome 😊
Can you ram with a rowboat? Would be a good strat like using it like a manned Torpedo.
The rowboat itself, no. However, if you manage to get a rowboat will kegs and detonate them next to the enemy ship, that could cause damage, but that'd be really difficult to pull off. Best way to use row boat is cannon rowboat on duo sloop or brig to give and extra cannon on one side.
happy ramming hehe
What is the name of the white hull with purple trim?
The data was a little hard to follow, maybe a little chart would help

Best strategy when you are running out of supplies
How did you play 2 ships in one lobby?
Do you get peoples ships to test it on or do you join each others servers, if so how do you do this?

00:30 It this just my screen or should you've using VSync?
Yes I don't use it because it delays the input. However sometimes I forget to enable it during footage due to back and forth changes from streams to guides
@@PhuzzyBond ah thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, I keep realizing how susceptible I am to this effect :D
ALWAYS RAM.
The try hards never expect it and the "Pros" that think board and anchor is top tier always let it happen and board without patching.
Being chased? Let me grapple , anchor turn your front into them and let em RAM through.
You're a sloop? they're a galleon? RAM em .
So what you're saying is that I should master this and name my sloop Bonk
Me and my friends wanted to name our galleon Ram Ranch but Rare beat us to it
Can u please use v-sync while recording? It's just so bad to look at the video while the content is very interessting at the same time :D
My bad I forgot it off this time from the stream 😊
can't wait to take my skills to the next level in hour glass pvp by ramming the enemy sloop😋
This video is scary.
One of my favorite parts about ramming is that it makes ppl so mad
If it wasnt an intended strat then why would there be so much depth to how it works
Im excited when someone rams me, free sink
Wait, how about skelly ships?
I didn't test on skeleton ships , but usually a ram is not recommended since they have aimbot on and can straight to your pirate head if approaching broadside, and they also turn too fast in an unpredictable way if you approach from the front or back.
It's easier to send a boarder to prevent repairs, even if only one hole is present
“If you want to take your naval combat skills to the next level...” ....proceeds to give in depth tutorial about the most meme strategy in the game LOL naaahhh, people watch phuzzy pvp vids just for memes by now right? Surely.
Sinking to a meme is more offensive, it's the true pirate way, one day you'll learn.
Funnily enough me and my friend had great success doing the season 8 pvp with just ramming. You don't need to spend half an hour gathering supplies, and you aren't risking a half hour long battle just to sink and lose that time, you're either gonna win quick or lose quick. And with us being decent at hand to hand combat we are usually able to secure the enemy ship for long enough to sink it or at least ram it into some rocks to waste even more of their supplies.
@@crusader8102 Don't forget season 8 matchmaking goes with ELO. So if your ELO is bad because you lost numerous times... Then sure it's efficient to ram. Lol. Trust me with high ELOs, we see someone trying to ram, we pop your mast and circle you're done in 2 mins.
@@vziiixgaming2849 well, when we could see the opponents were more experienced we wouldn't instantly go for the ram but instead we would wait for an opportunity to show itself, and trust me the absolute sweatlords never expect a ram
@@PhuzzyBond bruh..... the only one sinking to that is someone who's newer to the game and very unexperienced in pvp. So if you like offending noobs then that says enough about you...
