  • Just a quick proof of concept video for DIY style LED mini spotlight using RCA/phono connectors. The RCA/phono connectors allow for a quick color swap when needed and help to keep connections compact and low profile.
    The final version of this setup will use speaker wire, rather than in individual red and black spool wire.
    Additionally, the cost to make each mini spotlight is about $1.00 and to make a set of 8 spotlights and the power supply to run them comes it at just around $15.

    I was able to find almost all of my parts in bulk, which really helped bring the cost down.

    you know I am glad I found your channel. Its crazy I never saw it before. I can see this video was posted in 2013. I hope to learn some technique for when I make some more of my props.

    For this build, I just went to Radio Shack and Frys, since I just wanted to buy enough parts to make sure it worked. Now that I know it does, I've found everything in bulk, either on ebay or at Home Depot/Lowes. I figured you'd like the background!

    The terminal was store bought. I found them at Radio Shack. Look for "jack box". As for the power supply, it's a 12v 5a regulated power supply. I got it from Monsterguts, but I'm sure you can find them at other places as well.

    Very awesome! Love it, Great job stream lining that set up. Once one takes the time to make this its makes for a very fast speedy set up each year. Where do you purchase all your components from? Love your background! LOL!

    Nicely done.
    I keep using barrel connectors for my stuff because I have lots of them ready to be salvaged from my world of electronics. But now that I'm no longer mucking about with those particulars, I need a new source of cheap plugs. it never dawned on me to use RCA plugs. Got a bunch of those lying around too.

      @VanOaksProps  3 роки тому

      Yeah, that's the boat I was in when I started down this path. Many years later, they still work like a charm, although I'm considering switching to waterproof connectors since rust will eventually make the plugs unusable.

    This is amazing and exactly what I've been looking for to use on a project I have in mind.
    Do you have any videos detailing the power supply for something like this?
    I am a newb and the electricity part is what i don't know, and im nervous enough that its keeping from getting projects done.

    • @VanOaksProps

      I don’t currently, but the way I do mine is to take a few male rca cables, snip off one end and expose the wires, and then join the positive wires together and the negative wires together before inserting them into a female 12v plug adapter (like this one: www.amazon.com/dp/B015OCV5Y8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_aCAKFbHEQ4W3W) and then you can connect it to your 12v 9a power supply.

      This build used a 10mm LED, there are also 5mm and 3mm depending on how micro you need to go.

    I am fairly new to your channel but I have to say you have a LOT of great content. I am loving this project with the mini LED spots. My biggest problem is locating a Jack Box. Did you ever find another source for them since Radio Shack is no longer? Thanks again for all the great projects and ideas!!!!!

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  3 роки тому +1

      I haven't, but I have found that the jack box, in the end, is over engineered. You can take a few RCA cables, snap off one end and join the ends to your power supply with a female 12v adapter. I'm going to be making another lighting related video soon and I'll show you how I'm doing it now. Thanks for subscribing!

    I LOVE this. I set up mini spot lights a couple years back but set up took hours to spice and tape each one. This is so much easier. question... I can see scrap audio cable from a thrift store being usable but what do you use for longer lengths (8' and over)?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  2 роки тому

      I use speaker wire. Although you can buy super long rca cables from places like Monoprice for dirt cheap.

    I am so new to wiring, so I was hoping for some help:
    A single power supply is run and connects to a single RCA port which powers the jack box (just a collection of couplers all wired together). Is this correct? If so, how is the power supply connected? Is the jack box wired directly into the supply? Does the power supply connect to the rca cable with an adapter?
    I’ve seen the v3 with the eagle eye lights, and plan to use those, but was coming back here hoping for some clarification.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  11 місяців тому

      In my first version it was wired directly to the rca jack. In my second version I added an rca connector to the power supply. Either will work.

    How is the panel of RCA female plugs wired/connected to power supply? Thanks!

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  2 роки тому +1

      There's a few ways you could do it, but in this example I just clipped off the plug from the power supply and wired the leads directly to the first terminal in the RCA block. If you wanted to keep the original plug on the power supply, you could add a female connector that matches your power supply and then connect that to your RCA terminals with a bit of wire.

    I'm a beginner. Can you be more specific on the major materials (i.e. jack box specifically). I googled jack box and don't see one that looks like the one you used. Can you tell me the Brand, model or something?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  8 років тому

      All the specifics are listed in the video description. The jack boxes may be hard to find, since Radio Shack stopped selling them.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  8 років тому

      I just check and I have some left over, since I purchased as many as I could when Radio Shack went out of business. If you're interested, I'd be happy to sell them to you at cost. Just send me a message and we can figure out the specifics.

    Haha, let them have a stroke. I'm not asking them to subscribe to my ideas and concepts. The fact of the matter is, no one other than me will have access to it, so I don't see it being an issue. Plus, if you want to plug your audio device into my system without my knowledge of it, then you get what you had coming to you! hahaha
