  • This is my video tutorial for how to make an Axworthy Flying Ghost for Halloween. This flying Halloween prop was built using an electric motor, a variable speed controller, 2 bicycle wheels, pulleys, fishing line, plastic air tubing, steel brackets and wood. The ghost was purchased at a local Halloween decorations store. There were many test trials performed to eventually arrive at this finished product. I hope everybody enjoys my version of the Axworthy Ghost.

    It's wonderful - I especially like the "tensioner" pullies, pulling him almost around the corner of the window, as if he's sneaking out of sight once he goes into the barn! VERY well done!

    Nice ! I've done a couple . A different tack was a BBQ spit motor .... thread the inside of the square drive , add an 8" angle bracket with a bolt 1/2 way ... add flat black , light tin or cheap PVC pipe , length to your liking to swivel DIAMETER .. add 2 ghosts (on at each end , mine were 4" Styrofoam balls , cardboard "wings" loosely wrapped in an open weave tafida(sp) .
    THIS setup stood on adjustable sawhorses atop a pitched roof....a Black Light below was boxed with an open top .
    EFFECT : GHOSTS WOULD APPEAR AND DISAPPEAR AS THEY ROUNDED OVER THE BLACK LIGHT . NICE EFFECT .
    By the way , I retired from building/decorating last year !
    THANKS FOR THE FINE VIDEO !👍🏼

    That's the best flying ghost I've seen, and I've watched a lot of video's on these! I wish you provided more details about the motor, control switch and the setup, but thats a near perfect ghost and I'm now inspired to create my own. Halloween is coming, we must prepare!

    telescoping wheel up the tree, brilliant. A triangle, or multiple point turn would be a smoother transition in direction as well as allowing multiple ghosts on the line. Weaving through trees would be creepy too, more so than simply flying overhead back and forth. I think flying to the back of the barn was a waste of string length, but flying through the window was an awesome idea. Well done sir!

    Ashley, this is really nicely done! One of the best I've seen. Flying into the barn that way is truly inspired. You have a great venue for a party with that big yard and the barn. Would love to see some night time video, that's when mine always looked the best. Kudos for making it work so well, it is a really tough prop to get tuned so that it is reliable. My original AFG went all the way around my house, it had some elevation changes and tight spots to fly through. Wind and/or rain would usually cause it to fail. My plants and trees have grown so much since the last time I set it up, I don't think it would work now. Again, well done!

    Hahahahaha I did this exact same thing about 25 or 30 years ago. I got permission from the people across the street to let me attach a small pulley to the edge of their garage. I used fabric fishing line dyed black, used a heater fan from an old car as the motivator. The motor was mounted in my attic, in fact I bet it's still there, lol. Anyway the ghost I made from a sheet and a balloon inside for the head. It was manually controlled so I had to sit in the attic and wait for people to go by below. When energized it flew out the window from the attic crossed the street and flew back into the window. It was a great effect but the downrange pulley I used made a little noise so it gave it away to anyone really paying attention. The flight speed was just about perfect though.

    I love this version! I am about to build my 1st version.
    1. I have a 1/2 horse motor from the 50's. It is probably 50lbs. I've seen this made with wiper motor.
    2. I'm going to use braided fish line. Way less stretch.
    3. I'm going to use an offset hanger similar to a chairlift. This should allow for line guides at the wheels and in the middle of the run if necessary.

    Great job but try this next year. Extend ghost's (get some more and add those pullies!) arms out to Superman flying position, mount woods pulley on the end of a long galvanized pipe and strap it to tree to minimize ladder work, add a graveyard scene with some tombstones and fog machine with igloo chiller to hug ground. Your setup has endless possibilities! Halloween is AWESOME!!!!!

    I know its fishing string but how is it attached directly to the ghost without causing the ghost to spin freely?
    A special knot or directional fastner to keep it facing forward?
    Thanks!

    • @TruAnRksT
      @TruAnRksT 5 років тому +2

      The ghost loops around the bike wheels and has two lines connecting it to the main line so as it goes around the bike wheel it faces in the opposite direction. Going and coming it faces the direction of travel. Nice.

  • @TruAnRksT
    @TruAnRksT 5 років тому

    The bike wheels are a great idea, they allow the ghost to be directional and continuously going. Mine only went out and back controlled by a manual switch. The ghost wasn't directional like yours so it didn't really have a face. I suppose a long trailing piece of fabric would have turned it like the tail on a kite. Well it was just a thrown together one night thing.

    I agree with Bob Rainy. A few more details would be so helpful. We've had several failed attempts with flying ghosts that we're almost ready to give up. This video keeps the hope alive but only for a short period. Definitely need more info to keep the interest and attempt to try again.

    • @ashleydavies2113
      @ashleydavies2113  6 років тому +2

      Sure ... the most critical thing is the motor ... I experimented with several different motors and finally bought one at a 1/2 HP motor at an electric motor / repair shop ... I will look for the specs on the motor tomorrow and post them for you. Other important items are the fishing line (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071129KFN/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), and the speed controller (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BLOSG7I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The hardware for the brackets and pulleys all came from Home Depot and Lowes. The bicycle wheels came from 2 bikes that I got at Good Will. I am skipping doing this again this year as I will be out of town but next year I will make some improvements. One improvement I will make is to use a slightly larger diameter bicycle wheel for the drive assembly ... the larger wheel along with the current 1" pulley on the drive motor should enable me to slow the speed down a little more ... I did do a lot of testing ... I had a lot of failures ... but I made progress and learned something new with each test until I finally got over the hump and got that ghost to fly consistently over several hours.
