- On September 15, 2023 the Patriotic Duty offshore race team broke a 35 year old offshore powerboat world record by running their 47' Outerlimits GTX offshore powerboat from San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge to Marina del Rey in Southern California, breaking the old record by over an hour. This race, produced by @OceanCup was one of a series of endurance races hosted by the powerboat organization who aims to put the ocean back into Offshore Racing.
As a member of the Ocean Cup team, I was invited to participate in this historical race by filming and photographing the team from the chase helicopter as we followed them down the coast. This didn't go completely as planned, but that story is yet to come on a future, full-story video.
2023 was full of great photo adventures, but this event takes credit for being the coolest one I did this year. Thank you to team Patriotic Duty and Ocean Cup for inviting me to be a part of offshore racing history.

Inspiring Story and Great video, thanks!
Congrats Gentlemen... Two decisive victories that likely will stand for quite some time! LOVE he boat / team name!!!
My backside hurts just thinking about 5 hours on the ocean at near 100 knots. This is really incredible.
Luckily, they built the seats to include Fox Shock absorbers, just like on a dirt bike.
Dirt bikes don't have shocks on the seats
@@Michael-ry4bi 🤦🏻♂️
impressive performance. that the time is beaten with an hour tells. about a boat that is 100% set up and a crew that is very practiced and focused. salute from here
I believe in speed and power! Well done!
Yes! Thank you!
Great video! The audio is awesome and complements the great footage 👍🏼
Thanks Scott!
BAD TO THE BONE AWSOME KILLER JOB AND BOAT TAKE CARE,, ENJOY 2024 HAVE FUN,,
Fantastic video Erick. And amazing job by the team. Hey, you should’ve stopped in for a beer in Oxnard. 😂
Haha! Hey Tank! Nice to hear from you! Thanks for watching! Hope to see you for the Catalina Fun Run this year!
Great Run!
Alot of things could have gone wrong, thats a long way offshore Great Effort!
Congratulations form a Ex Venice Ca MDR guy
400 miles Hahahaha you are joking I hope
those are some well built motors to stay together that long with that much power. awesome work all around with the rigging!
Should have used gas turbines, no worries about them staying together at those speeds.
@@dundonrl im pretty sure the 5x more expense for no better performance makes no sense. the acceleration sucks in turbine boats vs. equal power in a combustion motor, and i would think the fuel mileage would also kill that idea at cruise.
@@dundonrl this one stayed together just fine thats my whole point. whooosh
@@ct1762 When at power, a gas turbine is more efficient than a traditional 4 stroke piston engine. It's at idle when the piston engine is far superior for fuel economy. (that's why the Army is/has installed a single cylinder APU on the M1 Abrams for use while parked so they don't use the gas turbine at an idle).
@@dundonrlwell, if they thought it was better they would have done it
Wow. Hats off to these three guys!!!
Beautiful job and a beautiful boat!
Hell, yeah
Simply stupendous guys. And such a proud fitting name...with great respect from a combat vet!
Superb watch and achievement obviously well planned. Bit of a dream thing to do for the team to do love it
You had the nice fall weather and calm waters coming out under the gate and heading south 👍. great video and congratulations new record!!
Congratulations and God bless boys.
Great job. Needing to know how choppy it can get must be crucial to planing the day of the attempt. I guess at that speed the swell height is just as important to know.
Excellent Work !!!
Perfect weather.
Well done lads . From Australia . Cheers.
Fabulous! Incredible experience, even watching it!
Thanks for watching!
Great crew and a Badass boat.
Worthy!
When I was a teenager I needed a ride back fromPut In Bay to. Cleveland I knew some guys on a cigarette and they both worked at Cleveland Propeller for a guy who was more used to sailboats it was one heck of a ride it was just the three of us and we were strapped in tight they told me they took it easy so they didn’t bust anything this was back in 1974
How epic! I didn’t even know this was a thing and I live in Palos Verdes.. makes me want to break these records some day
Well done lads. Also a testament to those engines running hard for hours and hours at high revs like that.
Yes, it really is. Nobody builds em like Mercury.
Mercury magic!
Bro they SMASHED those records!!!! Nicely done team! And great footage as always Erick 🤘🔥
Appreciate it!!
Well done, and bad ass boat!!!!
AWESOME . GREAT JOB.
Incredible 😆😆😆😆
Super cool for a trio of old F'rs !!!
I hope that would have smashed those records based on that boat (tech) that wasn’t around back then. Beautiful boat!
Crave the wave. This never gets old..
Where can I watch it without the music?
That was an incredible feat !
A trained monkey could do that, or a cat…or wait….my goldfish.
They got to Long Beach faster than the old record to MDR
I love the documentation by @FastLoudPhotography of these two very epic California endurance offshore World Records. The soundtrack with the tune 'Right of Passage' is as fitting as it's excellent. Thank You for always covering events like this and the #CatalinaFunRun for example. You guys rock!
Thank you for the kind words, and thanks for watching!!
Can someone clarify for me...twin 1350's... in what looks like a pretty standard offshore powerboat... only 140mph...?? Most offshore racing boats, with that setup, will comfortably run at 160mph. Is this de-tuned for some reason...? TIA.
I'm no expert, but the speeds you're talking about are typically achieved with catamaran hulls, where they pack air beneath the boat for additional lift. This allows a lighter ride for more efficient use of power. But also, this boat was loaded with more than double the amount of fuel it was originally designed for - over 700 gallons. Thats a lot of extra weight. Thanks for your question and sorry for my delayed reply. I was kind of hoping one of these guys would chime in.
Just curious if anyone has any knowledge on what the role/task of the 2 onboard not piloting? They certainly are doing something important. My guess is copilot is navigating and the guy in the back is there to be able to make on the move repairs?
I included their roles in the test of the video. The left front is the throttle man (and the guy who built the boat). The right front is the driver (and the owner of the boat). And the back seat is the Navigator (and team manager).
Outerlimits breaks another world record. Sorry Reggie.
great job!
Man I would love to ski behind that beast!!
Awesome
Frickin awesome
Great race & coverage guy's
Thank you!
Hope to
Make it with the new boat brother! 😁👍
Is there a version without the music? Or at least toned down? Great vid but I love some roaring engine sounds
Sorry, we were doing 100 mph in the helicopter, 100 ft off the water.
All there is is roaring wind sounds and helicopter rotors. I did include the engine sounds from the GoPro’s on board the boat, but they were doing 100mph, too. Mostly wind.
That is just SO American. Congratulation to the entire team, and the fantastic boat with its twin racing engines. Doctor George Whitehead
very nice job.
a lot lot of pretty pictures but no analysis 😞
what was the average speed?
what were the challenges? (other than the fog bank mentioned).
..... it's like a fairy tale with no evil witch
Wow, nice Video. Which Camera and which Stabilizer or Gimbal did you use ?
Thank you! I used a combination of my Canon R6 with the built-in stabilization and GoPro Hero 9. We couldn’t fly with the doors off lol I normally do, so there wasn’t enough room to operate my gimbal through the little window.
@@FastLoudPhotography
Sorry, but i would know, what you use on the Boat.
@@kaptnblaubar6262 two GoPro hero 12’s

Thank you !!!
Very cool. I’m not sure if I wanted to be Driving, Throttle, or navigating..
10 tons thats heavy!
Well done 😀
I miss them powerboat races in Atlantic as a kid! I use to hear the thunder noise of engine and choppers and go sprinting off to the beach! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Doing our best to keep the sport alive! Thanks for watching!
Living just down the bay from where they do trial runs of Outerlimits is always a thrill, not just seeing them but hearing them also.
Ugh, wish I didn’t miss seeing this thing flying across the Bay.
Call out someone with a 47’ Apache to run it back and let’s see how long this record lasts
Sounds good. Let it be known… This is the official call.
What's the record to San Diego?
Good question. I’m not sure there is one.
the Boat Leaving a Dock at Loch Lomond in San Rafael,California….I Knew it Immediately after seeing the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge😉,I grew up in San Rafael for a Decade…there was a Boat called the Arneson from SR ,it had a Turbine Jet Engine in it & used to Depart at that Same Dock in Loch Lomond💥💥
That’s freaking awesome
Congratulations 🎉
You should have been trying to set the record for how fast you could escape CA.
lol. Thats actually funny. 😁
That place used to be great now. It sucks......Well you can imagine.
awesome
Each engine was 1350hp???
Yes. 1350 x 2
Cool video but it's NO APACHE running all out from Florida to Cuba. Just saying.
MERCURY powered !
That's no joke. Their poor spines. They hit anything in that water and that can be catastrophic.
Yes, for sure! Luckily they built their seats to float on Fox Shocks, just like from a motorcycle, so it helped with a lot of the continuous impacts. Thanks for watching!
Old timers, kickin butt.
Yessir. Great group of guys.
Where does a guy take a leak?
“Depends”
‘World’ record?
Those 1350 mercurys and #8 drives are my dream!
I want one.
“That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little boat ride.”
oh ffs...
Congrads
Which boat would beat their record?
A friend of mine used to race one of these with his dad. They named their boat The Bearded Clam.
😂😂😂
Great video. But how can it be a World Record when its between to places in the USA? You can't break it anywhere else in the World!
Lol. Someone from another part of the world is welcome to come and break it. That’s what they do in Cowes-Torquay.
@@FastLoudPhotography yeah I'm from Melbourne and have never heard the record described as a "world record".
And how is buying a really expensive boat "patriotic duty"? Cringe all over the place. Get over yourselves.
@@milesbaker7499 Our patriotic duty is only to the USA - non Australia. No need to get your feelings hurt. If you read the captions in the video, the name is intended to honor our military service members and veterans. None of this team, including myself, could care less if you are from Melbourne and how the name or record triggered you.
@@FastLoudPhotography lol classic. "Our patriotic duty is to spend millions buying a flashy wanker boat and make a youtube video of it... to honor the vets". Don't forget to play the anthem while you take a dump.. to honor the vets. I'm sure they feel so honored. We got our limbs blown off but it was OK, because this guy painted his fancy boat up in our names. That makes it all better.
It's your DUTY to buy a speed boat. The country DEPENDS on it.
I'm not "triggered". I'm laughing at the lot of you. You're a bunch of pathetic rich old men waving a flag every time you do anything. Gotta do it.. for the troops.
@@milesbaker7499 Soooooo... I guess it's safe to assume you won't be subscribing to my channel or visiting the US any time soon? What a relief. Have fun down under, mate. Cheers!
Awesome Video 😎🚤💯
Thanks 💯
Way to burn up all that fuel boys!
Can you post without the music?
I'd love to do a run like this (even without attempting to break a record) but at my age, I'd have to stop and piss about every hour! 😳🤣🤣
😂
In Dead calm water . Big challenge ?
Going fast in a boat terrifies me.....I am a chicken
With enough money , you can break all these records .
Those Mercury engines are bulletproof.
Thats true and they set a course record.
and the cost of the fuel was $25,000,230.
Lol. Actually, just under $5k
Exactly what record was broken?
thats an expensive boat ride.
Faster than the I-5 for sure... Fact
Great video, not sure how you claim it as “ world record “ when it’s a event held in USA but that’s America for ya. I’d say it’s more a event record or stage record hey
Doesn't matter where it's held, it's open to anyone in the world to try to break. that's the point. There ARE other counties that have people that hold "world records" even though they are done in that country, I guess us Americans are actually smart enough to realize that, unlike you. Let me guess, you're British or Australian?
But you know they are EXTREMELY tired
Also, ihr habt einen Rekord gebrochen, der aus 1988 ist, und das mit einem Hightech-Boot, das viel moderner ist? Glückwunsch?
Yes. Sorry, our Time Machine was broken that week. 🙄
👊😎

Who’s kid is that?
Rip Bamse
you cant compare two boats which are almost 40 years apart.
True. We’ll just jump in our Time Machine and head back to try again.
Course record, yes and very well done. World record no. Using that logic every course record would be a world record.
Base er doed
They must have gone to the bathroom in their pants...
