  • Polymorphous light eruption and other forms of sun allergy are certainly not fun - if you suffer from them they tend to ruin any outdoor fun. But what actually causes them? And how can you treat or, even better, prevent PMLE and sun acne?
We are going to talk about that today.

Prednisone is the only thing that helps, I love the sun, when the rash starts I take 20 mg, for the next couple days I take 10 then 5 mg and then I’m good for the rest of the summer I don’t get it anymore and I have a beautiful nice tan 😁

@@Ssosophisticated I would never! Advise anyone to take prednisone or another corticosteroid without consulting a doctor and Boeing under medical guidance! Prednison orally can have a huge impact on your hormonal symptom and is easy to cause long-term effects as well as withdrawal symptoms that could lead to hospital admission when not used correctly (Addison crisis i.e.). I really hope you are under medical guidance and I would kindly ask you to NOT promote taking corticosteroids without that - it is irresponsible.

About five years ago, I went on a vacation and my body was covered with hives after going to the beach . Now whenever I’m exposed to the sun, whatever part of my body is exposed I start developing hives. Within about 30 minutes. I don’t know what triggered it. I was in my mid-40s but nothing else has changed. I’ve always worn high SPF sunblock. Now I take an allergy pill when I know I’m going to be out in the sun and that seems to help reduce it some, I still use SPF and sunshirts and preventative clothing to cover up. I take a vitamin D supplement along with general supplements for health. I am brown skinned so I and I never had this happen when I was younger. I just started talking Astaxanthin as a supplement and I’m hoping it will help. Have you heard of this supplement? I’m trying anything.

I suddenly got sun allergy about 10 years ago for the first time. My skin got very (very!) itchy and little bumps formed a couple of hours after I exposed it to the sun during spring-early summer. I mainly got it on my decolleté, my upper arms and the legs. I also think that the sunscreen that I used then triggered the sun allergy ever more, so on the next year I gradually exposed parts of my body when spring arrived (keeping long sleeves on my arms then medium sleeves, short sleeves.... same with the legs: longs pants, then 3/4 pants...etc) and it helped! In prevention I also took some beta-carotene supplements, usually meant to maximize the tanning but in my case, it just helped my body not to react too strongly to the first sun exposures during spring-early summer. One last word: in my case the allergy was very strong on the first year, then was weaker and weaker every next year, until I haven't had any more issues since 4 or 5 years. Thank you some much for talking about this matter, Doctor Anne!

Mine has completely disappeared now that I am in my 40s, one of the benefits of aging in this case I guess.

Mine started off exactly this way, very itchy small bumps(I thought maybe bites from a little red spider if you know what I mean) and swelling on my face even. Just shortly after my first couple responses like this now I only have non-itchy but immediate small dry pinkish patches everywhere that look like eczema mostly on areas when the sun touched but will pop up under the clothes too and all are most noticeable after showering. There is no discomfort though. What could this be?

Around 10 years ago I was on my way home from a sun vacation, covered in extreme rashes and miserable. I picked up an in flight magazine and read an article about a newish product that helps with sun sensitivity/allergy called polymorphous light eruption. First, I was ecstatic that I had a name to describe this annoying (and sometimes painful) condition. In the past my doctors just told me to avoid the sun. 🙄 This article was talking about a sunscreen with “mexoryl” in it. The brand it was talking about was Laroche Posay. Not joking, I went straight to the drug store and bought it on the way home from the airport. IT WORKS. Like a miracle. Try it! It’s expensive but now other companies have mexoryl in their sunscreens such as Ombrelle (a little cheaper). When I go on vacation it’s a hassle ensuring I have enough sunscreen for the whole trip but it’s worth it. Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the video! Helped a lot. My first severe case was curious.. it eas in November 2008, exactly 13 years after a dinner eating crab and that same night, I ended up at the hospital. I had such a severe allergy that I ended up at the Hospital and had an injection and was hospitalized for one night. 3 days later, once recovered, I wen out in the sun once for the first time after the crab allergy and I have exactly the same allergic reaction I had with the crab.... since then, until today... I can't sunbathe. After just 5 minutes I get a lot of itching, bumps, all over the body that has been exposed. even in the shade, if it's too hot or if the rays reflect, I get allergic. I've already been diagnosed, and it's solar urticaria. But we can't see good treatment here. It's horrible to live like this, it's depressing. Not even sun allergy sunscreens help. I don't know what will help me, I've already thought about food, but I need more advice and tips.
I cannot go to the beach, play outside with my daughter, drive, anything that is outsíde wth the sun is horrible. Even indoors, if I sit next to a Sofa next to thr window, I need to move. Its horrible

I am somewhat convinced it has something to do with inflammation in the body and is a symptom not a root cause. Especially when we see hi ige or h2.
I will be doing a few gut test to see if there is a overgrowth( sibo) or parasites that might be causing inflammation. I will also look into the liver and mitochondria to see if there is an D3 issue or any issues around that.
I don’t accept that solar Urticaria just comes out of know where. Nothing just randomly happens.
I will also start emotional counseling
Mine came up after very emotional stressful times.
Also look into local environmental toxins.
Getting my drainage pathways going and eating clean and in a way that reduces inflammation. I am expecting to see better gut health in general and over all health. I expect there to be change. ( though slightly discouraged cause mine has gradually gotten more sensitive. I will still press on. What else do I have to do?

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  3 роки тому +2

While all of this might make you feel better (and if it does, keep on doing it), from my knowledge there is no proven link with nutrition or a parasite overgrowth.

I have found 3 people that have cured themselves:
      One did counseling
      One lost weight
One did a skin bio oil treatment ( cause the city water stripped her skin bio down )
I’m sure that you also feel like skin issues have nothing to do with diet as well. Like most traditional medicine.
Traditional medicine separates the body into different sections and pretends that we are not one organism. They disregard environmental toxins, mold, parasites, and if you say it could be emotional then your laught at.
I have the same respect for traditional doctors as I have for burnt out bartenders that get kickbacks from jack Daniels for selling more jack. ( they don’t care about the roots and have lost all the will and energy to really care )
Things don’t happen for no reason. And for doctors to say that or elude to that sounds ignorant and lazy.
      I have sibo
Sibo was once a laughed at thing but traditional medicine and is now starting to become a recognized issue.
Sibo is connected to many manifestations: one being acne and hives. Solar urticaria is ..... hives.
I appreciate you willingness to share your experience and which is you basically saying manage your expectations..because your finite experience has not had success. Thank you.
Even if it isn’t cured when I fix sibo. I will at least be getting my whole being back in order. And that is always good. Reducing inflation and antibody production in my body so to sibo. ( but Ofcourse that has nothing to do with a inflamed face or a body that over reacts and gets hives.... being sarcastic )

As someone who always loved summer, the heat, being outside, always on cruises/vacations, I noticed my PLE once last summer and then in this yr June, started breaking out in hives every time I stepped outside . Somethings definitely not right in our body’s if this just randomly happens. Our body won’t react unless there’s something causing it to. I've had PMLE for about five years now, It first occurred when I moved to a different city. I also had a highly stressful job at a time. At first I was misdiagnosed with food allergies and regular acne, sadly it took me some time to realize that the only time my rash would appear was after a direct sun exposure. The rash always develops on the next day and after tormenting me for about 3 days it starts to go away on its own. It really helps to avoid sun between 10am and 3pm, and always apply sunscreen before I go outside(spf50). I do wear a hat (with a sun filter) during especially sunny and hot days. As per my doctor's recommendation I take vitamin D supplements from time to time. I prefer fish oil. And my whole skincare routine for combination skin is very gentle and extremely basic, for the night time:
    1. hydrating cleanser or double cleanse (depends on how much makeup and sunscreen is on my face throughout the day)
    2. moisturiser
    3. a course of prescription Differin (never use if the rash is on, but on a regular day it highly improves the appearance of my skin)
    and in the morning:
    1. lukewarm water
    2. moisturiser
(right after I was diagnosed with PMLE this is when I would use a course of topical azelaic acid cream, it helped me to fade out any scars. but I no longer need to use it)
    3. I tend to apply sunscreen 10 mins before I go out to get the most out of it
I also do not get a rash from a light exposure indoors hence no sunscreen at home.
Prevention works for me the best and I haven't had a rash for about a year by now, very happy with the results.

Unfortunately I live in the desert where the dry heat hits over 100 degrees F in the summer, I switched birth control methods as my dr thought that could be the cause, also switched soaps, deodorants, lotions, opting for fragrance free when possible (everything but deodorant basically) and nothing has helped. I basically just avoid the sun when possible, I usually use a sun umbrella or long sleeves and pants when out, and the only thing that keeps it from being itchy (I will still turn red) is taking an antihistamine pill before going outside.

I recently got the only real sunburn I have ever had in my life like over a couple weeks ago now, after years of living in the dreary NW Washington State I moved to Central Washington and was so excited to be somewhere with hot and sunny weather. Well, to my surprise, I got burned and then started peeling a week later and suddenly got itchy pimples on my chest and shoulders. It's been over 2 weeks and now I'm noticing that these bumps will show up on any part of my body that's been directly in the sun (like even my arm if it's outside the window of the car) ... I just don't see why I've randomly had this happen to me. Could it just be from not getting a lot of UV rays for years? Anyways, I just need to see a doctor about it. This video explained PMLE very well and thank you so much.

I'm still not diagnosed, but mine allergy looks like PLME. I even have scars of my skin after the past years of frequent reactions after sun exposure. And it's getting worst if I use sunscreen. Even antiallergic sunscreens. My eyebrows are falling out and my skin is so itchy on my ears and knees. Sounds strange, but 🙄😁 I'm really tired of this and my skin is so damaged that I can't stand it.

Okay so its only once in awhile but its sither mt legs, arms or feet. Usually the one more exposed that get these rashes. I believe it may either be heat rashes or caused by the sun. It looks just like all the pictures but there aren't any of the bumps and just being out in the sun for a few seconds would cause it. Its also itchy. I talked about it to a doctor but he dismissed it saying it was an allergy to pollen because I mentioned how my worse one was when I was in the grass. Yet when I'm under a patio and my foot is out in the sun it turns red and starts itching. Is this a sign of having an allergic reaction to the sun/heat?

Can certain sunscreens set off the PMLE? I’m just curious bc I have never had PMLE until about 4 months ago and I had never used a sunscreen that you spray on. I bought it and the first time I ever used it I broke out with the rash on neck, arms, legs. After about a week it goes away. I’m just very curious bc I went to the dermatologist and they glanced at it and sent me home w a steroid cream and said it was PMLE. And they also said it wouldn’t happen but probably another time to two before summer was over bc my skin would basically get used to the sun again. I’m just confused bc I truly feel that the sunscreen is somehow triggering it or making it worse. I also feel like it isn’t protecting me at all from getting a rash. I can only be outside for 15-20 mins and I’ll break out in a rash and this has just never happened before so I feel so lost. Thank you 😊

    • @DoctorAnne
      @DoctorAnne  4 роки тому +2

Yes, different ingredients in sun screens can cause PMLE, but that should usually go away when using a different product. For me using a broadspectrum sunscreen makes a huge difference, as I seem to react to the UVA. May I ask how old you are?

Doctor Anne hey! Thanks for replying! I am 26... this is probably the 5th or 6th rash I’ve had this summer. I bought the spray on sunscreen at the beginning of the summer and every since then I’ve been getting a rash. And every time I have used this spray on sunscreen. I just feel it has something to do with it and I’ve said that all along but I thought that couldn’t be true.... for whatever reason. I just know I was out in the sun before and was completely fine. Have always been fine. And then I went to the golf course one day and knew I was going to be out for awhile so bought the spray on sunscreen at target and then out of nowhere I got the rash. And then again about 3 weeks later, got it again and so on and eventually went to the dermatologist and that’s when they told me that’s exactly what it was. The whole thing is just very strange to me... I’ll be watching for your response. I’m so curious now what else you have to say! Haha.
