I have suffered for 15 years and never met anyone else with this condition. Nothing works except staying out of the sun. Sitting next to a window is also a problem. I live in Alabama so summers are impossible. I pray for a cure or a treatment that works!

I have had a sun allergy for over fifty years. My family has seen what I go through when I have had sun exposure and they truly understand how it effects me. They protect me at all times with shade locations. Many acquaintances don’t understand how difficult it can be. I use an 50 or 60 spf sunblock when I must go out and this works. I have been a shade seeker all my life. I know no other way. I live in Canada and the summer is the most difficult for me.

Hi! i just became aware that after 36 years i am now also dealing with hives after 4 min in the sun. I feel like stress is what caused the change. I know that people get relief from pepcid ( an acid reducer here in the states ) . it inhibits h2 histamines that are from the gut. its interesting that it could be a gut based issue. i am set on figuring it all out. I will share my discoveries. :) godbless

I was diagnosed when I was 34. I've lived with this for 14 years.
Sun through a window can cause a reaction. Sunscreen and antihistamine is useless. I can react despite clothing. I can have milder reactions with florescent lights.
I get hives. My eyes can feel like they are on fire. (Similar to flash burn. When this happens I spend a day or two in the dark.) All it takes is about fifteen minutes of sun exposure to get things started. It always starts with a burning sensation. I have reactions even on cloudy days.
I need more specialized sunglasses. Regular sunglasses are useless.
I always fall asleep and typically feel unwell.

I too have SU. I have had it for over 10 years but was diagnosed last year when I was diagnosed with Lupus. I have never met anyone who gets that rash from the sun. My most recent rash was my sisters BBQ last week. I insisted that I wanted to sit inside and she said its not even that sunny. I paid for it before I even went home with at red itchy rash round my neck and a splitting headache all the next day. Factor 50 sunscreen did nothing. Its hard for other people to understand. I have hyperpigmentation too. My dermatologist has given me antihistamines. Good luck with yours :-)

It sucks really bad but I remember that I have a family and that I’m not the only one and that there is other people suffering worse than I am. I wish there was a cure too. I feel your pain. I didn’t grow up like this but I developed it somehow. Thank you for creating a video like this.

Well..I have been having this issue for the past 3 years...and I live in Jamaica! Thanks God I work in office during the sun hours and if I have to go outside I drive instead of walking. Just a couple of minutes can get the skin exposed very itchy..red and swallen, sometimes the sun is not completely out and I still get it. I have experienced the synthoms in my face twice, which is very uncomfortable. Hopefully I will find a solution to this soon!

Has anyone else had this come on during/after pregnancy? 3 years ago when I was 25 this started and it has gotten severe. Antihistamines work a good bit, but tend to make me so insular and withdrawn. Sunscreen prior to exposure used to help but does not anymore 😢
Today (February, in the eastern US which is usually chilly) was so nice out at around 60 degrees and my son and I played outside on and off all day in mostly overcast weather and tonight I’m having one of the worst flare ups I’ve ever experienced. It didn’t even occur to me. I thought I was experiencing a stress response - then it dawned on me I was OUTSIDE today 😭😭😭 luckily I wore leggings so it’s only half of my body. I did an internet deep dive on relief and landed here.
Any special tips for management are greatly appreciated

Hello! I know this video was posted 4 years ago but I have a boyfriend who has had sun allergy for all of his life and I want to give a little tip:
It is possible to get vitamin D from the sun even if you’re just in the shadow outside, it just takes longer. That’s cause the needed radiation reflects on the walls etc, but not in a harmful amount. What doesn’t work though with this is being behind a window since the needed radiation is filtered out by the window.
It can also be possible to get a very slight sunburn from being only in the shadow :) (not that that’s very important haha but it’s a fun fact)
    Hope this helps! Good luck!

KALMES! Sorry to shout but I too was allergic to the sun!!! Holy crap people just don't understand how bad it is. Just out of the blue all it would take was 5 minutes and my face would be red raw, swollen and burning hot! Sometimes the pain is so bad it made me cry and FFS even the tears on my skin burnt! Then I spotted an article about "Kalmes" which is marketed for Rosacea but actually, it's for all sorts of skin reactions. I used it not expecting anything but within minutes my skin was calmed down and not only that since then I've been able to go out in the sun. I've not had to use it for years but I still buy a new tube each year because I can sometimes feel the "sting" which is the warning sign that I'm about to suffer. I've gone from someone with a face swollen and red raw sore to someone who can walk in the sun.

@@candicecoombs9586 www.skinshop.co.uk/kalme You don't need a prescription. I know that it says it's for rosacea but it works on any inflamation. The Daily Mail keep on doing articles about it which is how I first heard of it and at that time I would have smeared anything on my face I was just struggling so much with the redness/swelling etc. Not had to use it for years now but I alway have a tube of it just in case as it's just a horrible condition to live with and I hope you find some relief by using it.

I have the same condition; my doctor told me, "Turns out, you are a special snowflake" (ha ha). I treat summer like others treat winter: stay inside and stay covered. I get really anxious when I get hot because of the hives I experience on my feet, legs and arms, and like you I also can't tolerate most sunscreens. I have found decent luck with TULA sunscreen for the face, but so far that's been it. I know exactly how you feel!!!

Moved as fast as I could today but as I was putting last item of clothing on the line I could my skin burning I had only been exposed for 5 mins it's a nightmare people don't understand my family call me the vampire it's really not funny tho being covered up in this heat is not fun while everyone is wearing cute little summer tops and shorts and I look like a weirdo trying to escape the sunlight hopping into the shade or keeping the curtains closed in the house roll on winter for me it's a bit of normality and I can actually go out during the day without getting burnt or having my eyes burn water and itch 😭

There's a thing I found last year that helps me out in the summer heat. (I also have SU) The fabric is called "ice silk," and what's helped me are the "cooling sleeves." I've found them at Walmart for both arms and legs. The fabric isn't just UV blocking -- it also cools you down. It seems to be a recent invention, though, as it can be a little hard to find. (If it says "moisture wicking" or "absorbent" - that's *probably* NOT it.)

Hey I recently got diagnosed with solar urticaria so was looking up other’s experiences with it being diagnosed by the doctor. My symptoms started when I was 8 and there would be hives on my face with just a horrible itchy swollen red that wouldn’t go away for 5-10 days no matter what ointment/cream/aloe I put on my face. The symptoms get worse when I visit a humid and hot place like hawaii but for some reason my face manages to swell only in humidity as well(probably from the dryness). I’ve only suffered 8 years though 😅.
