Been awhile! This has become my go-to rig. You were right about slowing down the retrieve. I caught another limit today including a 20 inch rainbow. The pond I usually fish is pretty shallow. I'm now using 4lb low vis green mono with a 4lb flouro leader, a #6 baitholder, a 1/8th oz Copper Lil Cleo, and pink/white mice tails. The pond hasn't been stocked in a while and had been heavily fished yet this rig produced again. At one point I snelled a #6 and ran it through the tail for short strikers with pretty good success. Thanks again for posting this tutorial!
You are creative for the setup. I also like using powerbait fishing trout, but never thought about this way. This is cool. Will give it a shot in future.
Used this setup again today. The brown in my profile was caught on the rig. Local pond was Stocked yesterday. The pond was crowded and the powerbait bite was pretty slow but I was getting bit cast after cast. After a few fish, the old local die-hard fisherman started walking up asking what I was using. I (reluctantly) showed them this rig. I doubt many will take the time to rig it up though. I was using a #6 baitholder and missed probably 10-1 fish. I wanted to ask if you had any tips on hook sty!e/size etc. to help increase the hook up percentage. I watched the video where you mentioned threading the hook thin to expose a little more tip but I'm thinking it's the hook itself. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!
+Josh Hagee nice catch. try to slow it down a little bit. a lot of miss usually means the retrieve is too fast. also, I've used crappie jigs/tube and it works really well too. they also slide on the hook better since they are hollow and the hook is exposed more. red/chartreuse works best for me. depending on how deep the pond is, it might be good to use a smaller spoon since it will sink slower. also, reel in and a pause for a slight moment is a good trick too. depending on how deep your pond is, you don't want to pause for too long since it will snag the bottom. I've only used bait holder hooks for this, but you can try the gold metal egg hooks too - they are lighter and will sink slower -- thus allowing you to pause longer. you can also use just one powerbait honeyworm on a #8 hook. just vary your presentation: change speed (reel, pause, twitch a little, slower is better but that can be challenging in a shallow pond), change to smaller bait so the hook is more exposed. good luck.
+PK Yi Thanks! I'm using a 1/4 oz Cleo so it falls pretty well. I was thinking maybe a longer shank so the hook comes out about mid way but the jig head sounds incredible. The fish were higher in the column so I was reeling pretty quick to keep it high. I think slower might be the trick with maybe a smaller hook for the same relative depth. Thanks for the prompt reply and keep the excellent and informative videos coming!
Could you use a small spoon like a acme phoebe, for stream fishing using the flash...I am just starting to trout fish again after about 30 yrs..going into retirement, enjoy your videos...thanks for the great tips
+John Toth thanks. the acme phoebe will work. a 1/6 oz or a 1/4 oz might work best. I find the best retrieve is done slow, then pause for a brief second, and reel in slowly again. depending on how deep the stream is, you don't want to pause for too long to lessen snagging up. good luck.
Great video PK, and I've never seen this set-up. It's always fun to see the STRIKE and you had plenty. I saw you at Detroit chasing Kokanee, but where is your link to that video? Thanks.
+CoC With Bok I remember doing that a few times, but I never stuck with it. I had a lot more success with the spoon because it wobbles a lot more and gave the bait more action. and the leader to the spoon should be short, probably about 6" max. long leader tends to dampen the action of the bait. but that would be an interesting test to try out 2 rods, one rigged with a hookless spinner and one with a spoon and see which produces more. sounds like I got a subject for a new video.
+PK Yi Yea good idea, I live in Scotland here ours seasons over and starts again in March. I normally catch with the dough powerbait but after watching your videos I'm having high hopes for the eggs and the mice tails as I have bought some already. Here people like to spin and fly fish so I'm finding it a little hard to find some spoons. All the trout I've caught are about 3-4 pounds some go just short from my knee to my foot but it never caught so many like you so I'm gonna have to steal your set up ;) thanks for the advice!
PK YI Have you ever tried to take the hooks off a straight spinner and tying a leader on the spinner? Trout love spinners. I think I will try that. Anyway great vids keep up the good work.
PK, I tried your rig at 4 of the Mammoth Lakes and I was very disappointed. Compared to the Thomas Buoyant, your rig does not do it. I had absolutely no action at all.
Thanks for sharing. Will put this technique to use

nice catch on the 20" rainbow!
PK your videos are great, the best I think on the Internet. Appreciate your effort................see you in Oregon this summer.
Thank you, I appreciate that. Hope to see you soon.
Used this rig today...slayed em. Awsome rig and video.
+Josh Hagee nice. thanks.
I'm gonna try this rig..never seen one like this in 40 years...but seems to work great.
You are creative for the setup. I also like using powerbait fishing trout, but never thought about this way. This is cool. Will give it a shot in future.
thanks. this setup works best in deep water
You've got a believer in the method you used... hope I remember to try it sometime as I'm a bank fisherman mainly... Tight lines and good fishing

What size hook you recommend if we are keeping the trout ?
Just depends on what bait. For PB eggs, I use a #6 or #8. For dough, I'd go a #12 treble hook.
Wondering where I can find spoons without the hook. Any help?
mine was a blue fox that has a hook on it - so I just removed the hook.
What's up boss I'm here in bend oregon and love trout fishing awesome set up will have to try it
wow.... dude if i break my record with that rig i swear i send you a bottle of wive from here in France !
Hello! Great video! will be trying this set up soon! Wanted to know what kind of multi tool (blue) you are using? Thanks!
+Angel Castruita it's just a normal fishing pliers. search "fishing pliers" on amazon and you will get a ton.
Nice setup, wonder if this kinda rig will work on rivers. always nice to set the hook on the lip, nice video.
Can you use a whacky rig on this set up?
sure, I don't see why not.
I will try it and let you know how it works out.
Gonna have to steal your setup, thanks.
cool, foster seems to be a good spot right now
great video what size line are you using?
+Gustavo Rincon this was 20# braid.
Just curious, did you use flourocarbon for your leader and what pound? Or does it even matter?
+John Toth I only use mono for leaders for all my fishing. personally, I don't think it matters.
Great video PK, and I've never seen this set-up. It's always fun to see the STRIKE and you had plenty. I saw you at Detroit chasing Kokanee, but where is your link to that video? Thanks.
What rod and reel were you using
+RB. Guide Service cabelas XML 6'6" with a stradic FK 4000XG
Great video, I'll have to try this out at my local trout pond. What brand and size spoon did you use here?
+Jeff Cachero it was a little cleo, size 2/5 oz. any silver spoon will work though
Nice work!
Hey Pk, what kind of Rod and Reel?
cabela's xml 6'6" MH, and stradic FK 4000
Hey PK I took a spinner and took the hook of it, will that work as a spoon?
+CoC With Bok I remember doing that a few times, but I never stuck with it. But I've never caught so many like you*
+CoC With Bok the stocked trout here in oregon are pretty easy to catch, they will hit just about anything.
+PK Yi Can you tell me where you get your spoons? Do you get them online cause it's quite hard to find them here.
Doppeee set up #AnyFishCanGetIt 🎣
I've heard...you should wet your hand before holding ...Is this a fish tale
PK YI Have you ever tried to take the hooks off a straight spinner and tying a leader on the spinner? Trout love spinners. I think I will try that. Anyway great vids keep up the good work.
I have thought about it many times but never did it. Will have to try that, it just sounds like it will work great.
Hey u should make a video at EE Wilson it opens on the first of February
+hudson adams that's a good idea. that's definitely on my to-do list for next month.
what do you use to record your vids?
hero3+ black edition.
how many pounds is your leader line
leader is 6# mono or 8#, I can't remember. I'll be sure to add it to the description next time.
PK Yi thanks I'm going to try this rig out I usually use the Carolina rig to catch trout but this time it did not work for me
have you never thought to use barbless or squash the barbless? you seem to have à problem with yours easy hook out
If u need direction and anything I know the place pretty well
Need a good lake for this there a lake next to me in the high sieara they stick once a year it's a joke.
PK, I tried your rig at 4 of the Mammoth Lakes and I was very disappointed. Compared to the Thomas Buoyant, your rig does not do it. I had absolutely no action at all.
