  • I caught up with German Alpinist Jost Kobusch, who now lives in Chamonix, France to discuss his upcoming winter, no O's, solo attempt of Everest's West Ridge. This exact style and the route had never been attempted or accomplished.
In 2019, Jost tagged his high point at 7,329-meters/23,750-feet. He said before starting the expedition, he would be pleased to tag 8,000-meters so he got close. This time he is again targeting 8,000-meters and I hope he reaches the summit.
We cover a range of topics from how he got into climbing, what he learned from his 2019 attempt, what he's doing differently this time, his style of solo, no O's, and more. I think you'll enjoy meeting this 29-year-old climber.
    Climb On!

"I got socks older than you.." that cracked me up Alan. This was such an interesting interview and getting to know more about Jost and his sprit was just time well spend.

I've used that line for as long as I've worn socks! I love Jost's spirit and hope he influences a new generation of young climbers to seek new adventures in the mountain.

His goal seams totally crazy but it's his life. The pures hardest way possible.

As to doping, living in Colorado (Nepal), Diamox, and altitude tents are doping. Is having large food deliveries doping? Food and fuel improves your chances. Technical clothes improves your odds too.

Such a polarizing topic. Not sure why it brings out such emotions, other than people view mountaineering the same as, maybe, a professional sport that has rules. Mountaineering is 100% reliant on self-policing and personal integrity, and we see the spectrum in this respect. Thanks for the comments, Linus.

I get it that first ascents and new technical routes are the way to be a “pro” high-altitude alpinist. (I kinda doubt that the “pros” are paid that well.) I just worry that Jost won’t see his 35th birthday. He should slow down and perhaps do some guiding. He reminds me of Tasker without buddies and not as accomplished at writing. You had to say that Tasker’s death was inevitable at some point. I hope that is not the case with Jost.

He seems pretty grounded to me, just passionate about his sport. That said, I agree, Linus, it's a dangerous game.

He reached 7k m via the west ridge during the winter😲 with no oxygen
This guy is tough i onlg pray he succeeds and comes back alive cause i watched a doc of the first guys that tried the west ridge, only one guy survived so i have respect 4 any1 who tries it
Ohhh hv checked his IG, i think he didn't summit he stopped at 6k metres

Yes, Jost is strong. One correction for your comment, Tom Hornbein and his partner, Willi Unsoeld summited via the West Ridge in 1963. They both survived.

    Hey Jost,
Irgendwas war da total off.

Refreshing as i have always believed that if you need a guide you don't belong there. He is someone that isn't just another sheep of the commercial hordes.
