Superb video with great commentary. I have an early Eastman B3 but it was built with a leather seam down the right hand side zip instead of tape. I spoke with Gary Eastman and he said they made them that way because they thought the customer would prefer it. They must have had a change of heart and produced the now perfectly accurate versions that you have I also have an Eastman RAF Irvin type complete with the strap on the rear of the collar.
I love the 50 cal. I’ve got a Timeworn A-2 and would always get that option if available in Eastmans now. Nice broken in feel but not too much. Just feels way less stiff. I’m not crazy about the Crown as well. The Talon 42 is nice and smooth. My Eastman D-1 has a crown which is fine but definitely not as smooth. Thanks for the great video. I’m looking at getting a Flyweight Irvin next.
Eastman B3 cal 50 beautiful piece of jkt.. Horshide map pocket & arm/shoulder reinforcement on the vaunarable parts.. I have an Aviation Leathercraft 'Thruxton' Irvine RAF crew jacket only comes into its own -5°C or colder. Stunning jkt..
Very cool ,just ordered a repo B3 ,I was told the reason for more panels on the back was because they could use smaller off cuts to make the jackets ? ,great collection you have very envious 👍
How do you clean the fur? It was said that 1 pocket was there because the army didn’t want the pilots putting their hands in the pocket which I guess that look didn’t please the military.
Those are some beautiful jackets. Could I have one?😂 Just joking, but I have been looking around for a B-3 recently, and if I had the cash, I'd definitely buy an Eastman based off these videos.👍🏻
Hey Ted, thank you for checking in on those videos, I am glad they are informative enough. These jackets are expensive, however, the quality is simply unmatched. Please feel free to PM me with any questions you may have on flight jackets. Thanks again and spread the word about the videos if you don’t mind.
@@boshayb2671 That's what I've heard, haha. Everyone praises the high quality of Eastman. I've been looking into getting a Schott B-3, but I'm not sure how it'd stack up.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also, have you noticed any significant shedding in the wool over the years, or not much?
Hello,First The Best Jackets from Eastman Leather ,Thank so much for this Video,Excellently Jackets for zhe Winter. I Have a question ,i will buy in Janaury my first B-3 the Regular for 1350pound,I am 181cm and weight 87kg do you say 42 or 44 ? Thank You
Hello and Good Morning- Great question, to this point I have used a leather conditioner only once on my jackets, I reside in a climate that is not dry and the B-3 is only worn at the deepest cold days. Otherwise I store them on the floor in my closet. Thank you.
What's the most high-end shearling that Eastman uses? I myself am looking for either a B-3 or Irvin shearling jackets and i am considering Eastman. But i'd like to know whether or not it's higher quality than, say, Cirrus. Thanks!
Hello - Yes, great question, as far as I know and can only speak to the Eastman sourcing of the Devon shearling, which is of very high quality and only comes from sheep in I believe a Northern part of Scotland, this shearling is used in the B-3 .50 Cal versions. These particular offerings have a slighter more off white colour than other shearlings used. I had an Eastman ( not a .50 Cal ) that had a much whiter shearling. As far as Cirrus jackets I have no idea what they source.
@@wadsworth2351 It would only be a suggestion because that’s what I have experience with… I have never owned a Cirrus garment. I am quite happy with Eastman however.
@@wadsworth2351 Additionally, living in MN and using Eastmans on a daily basis. I can speak to there dependability and warmth as well. Thank you for the question! Always feel free to contact me.
Which fits better 46 or 44 I bought a size 44 battle of Britten jacket and I think it’s tight in waste was thinking I need a 46 the sleeves fit good jus want a longer coat and before I buy a b3 what size would you recommend me to get 44 or 46
Would you say that this model is tbe best jacket from eastman leather co? Or is there a beeter model that fits btter and is as warm as or even more warm than b3? I wonder how their b6 and the other jacket with a huge collar that can be wide opened be like.... Also did u purchase the jacket from the online webiste? Thank you!
First, Thank you for the questions. No, I did not purchase these from Eastman, it all started with the Originsl B-3 my Granddad was issued in WW2, then I had toyed with the idea of trying to make a reproduction of that jacket. ( way beyond my scope of know how ), I have tried the B-6, it is definitely very warm, Not quite as bulky as the B-3. You have to remember what the original intent was for these jackets, typically a B-6 was issued to aircraft mechanics. For the most part they stayed on the ground, however they needed warmth as well. The B-6 is great but IMHO won’t have the absolute shut out cold ability as the B-3. I have an original M-69 Transport coat that belonged to my Great Uncle. These were issued to Naval Aviators who flew cargo ( pre COD ) across the oceans. Basically, it is a long jacket lined with Al Paca. These were so well made, I believe to be warmer than the B-3, with pockets, big collars etc. I might pull that one out for this afternoon, our high will be -11 F.. I hope this helps.
@@boshayb2671 Thank you so much for a very detailed reply, I was wondering if you could possibly post a video that talks about your own leather jacket or military jacket collection and discussion on each jakclets histroy and characteristic, feeling when wearing and warmth etc(functionality). @@boshayb2671 Thank you for a great video sir! I wish you could also come up with a bideo that maybe explains or recommenda deceny modern day brands for flight jackets or leather jackets - like aeroleather, venson, eastman, and schotte, etc. Im trying to get a jacekt with a great silhouette that is made by modern brands (brand new) abd customize it, so your recommendation would be very helpful! Wish i can wear them sometimes in fall but mostly during the winter.
Synthetic solvent free leather conditioner .It has to be solvent/alcohol free because the outside is not leather it is leather suede coated with a nitro cellulose lacker .If you have a solvent in the conditioner than you will remove/impair the coating. That's why some people have the topcoat flacking of.Condition it before the season and you are good to go.Don't use saddle soap because it will completely destroy the topcoat
I use Renapaur Jojoba & natural bees wax balm...this feeds & nurishes the leather.. Brings back to life dry & faded hides..I personally swear by it for all leather handbags brief cases belts etc..
Hey, I can’t speak personally for you, however, I would definitely size up to a 46 if you are going to attempt to wear anything thicker than at-shirt under the jacket
Keep in mind, a 46 with the side belts pulled tight will trap air between you and the coat and that will warm up nicely as well with just a t-shirt. That works for me . I wear a size 46, slightly bigger at 6’-1” 185. The 44 might be a bit short in the arms with certain manufacturers, just be alert for that.
I sized up because of arm length, the size 44 was doable, but just a bit short in the arms, The size 46 also when cinched at the bottom of the jacket with the buckles on either side allows air to get trapped and warm up between you and the jacket. That’s one of the reasons I can wear just a t-shirt underneath this jacket even at -30 degrees, which we are close to right now. These were not bought from a dealer in the states.
As always, Thank you very much for the comments and questions, keep them coming, I will do my best to reply in a timely manner. Full disclosure, I have sold the size 44.
Thank you for the question. It would be helpful to know chest size as well, don’t want to hazard a guess until knowing that. B-3’s IMO, should NOT be worn with more than a t-shirt underneath, that will affect sizing.
