  • A key component of power and lift in your golf shots is making sure that your trail elbow doesn't get pinned to your rib cage in the backswing... If your depth is too great, you will jeopardize your chances of creating more loft and greater distance. Follow a few simple steps and we'll have you lowering scores and creating more accuracy... #LetsDoThis #TransformationalTip #TransformYourGame

    ricky fowler swing
Some people can play pinned (Hogan, Flowler, etc) and some people have really bad issues when pinned.
Issues like lack of power, sucking the club to the inside on the way back, shanking, left shoulder and back pain, etc.
Also - this pinned position requires a LOT more flexibility to pull off, so older golfers can forget it.

Glad I found Michael's personal channel. I used to watch him all the time on the Golf Channel. I'm impressed with the way he can spot very subtle flaws in a golfer's swing and then recommend the needed corrections.

Michael, this is the best drill I've ever seen to fix what has been ailing my golf swing. I kept getting stuck and couldn't figure out why I was throwing my arm out on the downswing. Thanks for the tip! Ed Kirsteins Deerfield, NY

Incredible! I love this guy! I just looked at my down the line video and I do that big time. I'm too inside and and my arm gets pinned. I think this also leads me hitting it off the hosel as well.

I wonder what Mr. Hogan would think of this advice since his elbow did exactly what Michael here is saying not to do.
That is the problem with golf instruction, instructors want you to swing like them, instead of finding your swing. What I think people don't realize is the amount of coordination that goes into the golf swing especially considering every single hinge, pivot, position, etc... in the human body. If you have a swing that gives you power and accuracy, just groove it until it is yours. All the pros swing differently and I'm always amazed how instructors (online or not) find flaws in professional golf swings without recognizing that these professionals play at the highest level of golf with those flawed golf swings which is more than any instructor has accomplished.

That’s pretty interesting and a deviation from what has been ingrained into my swing thought. The head cover drill I was shown, was to not drop it and keep it tucked in there to prevent the chicken wing. I have been struggling as of late with turning the hands over on the down swing causing the dreaded duck hook. Feeling lost. I will try this drill and see how it goes.

    • @sfort42

I think it depends on what swing flaws or tendencies you have. I was also told the same thing as you Sawyer, via video analysis to show me, that whenever I lift, I get steep and that promotes an outside-in swing path - the opposite of what we should have with an inside-out path. I love Michael Breed's analysis on this video ua-cam.com/video/vuud58V_kN0/v-deo.html where he shows that guys like Antwon - and me - come back too steep and get stuck at the top which makes it very difficult to not go over the top on the downswing. At 5:38 of the video I linked, I'm like the swing on the right - going over the shaft plane and going outside the target path, which is very bad. But it's what I fight.
I was told to "turn don't lift" and to keep turning and what feels like my hands never going above my belt line. For me, I don't have any issues at all making that headcover drop because I have a tendency to get too steep and lift too much, so I always have a huge amount of separation from my ribs and right elbow. When it feels like my hands are staying below my belt line, that's not really what's happening, but it feels that way. Kind of like what Butch says in this video ua-cam.com/video/vDCryeYZEIw/v-deo.html, "the feel isn't real".
I want to do just the opposite of this video to make sure my swing isn't steep. But, unlike you Sawyer, I have to *try* to hit a duck hook since that doesn't come natural to me. I fight a fade and a slice. Golf is a fickle little game and we all have to be analyzed to figure out what keeps us on the right swing planes that matches our swing and body types. Always interesting. But there's no doubt Michael Breed is great - you just have to find out what videos of his to watch based on your tendencies.

Point of discussion: Isnt this exactly what Hogan did?
But Hogan, they say, bent his irons flat to accommodate the lower plane.
Keeping the trail arm on top in the takeaway keeps the clubhead on or above plane, correct?
Your student's downswing seems to have the trail elbow in a good position ala Sergio Garcia....
    Thanks for the vid Michael.

I had a lesson two days ago and this video reinforces what I was taught. I'm struggling with long irons (including some shanks) even though I am 10 handicap. I am looking forward to taking Michael's drills firstly onto the range then the course. I have realised over time that advice from UA-cam can be general but this routine is specific and, for those whose swing is like mine, this video is a gem.

My elbow is pinned and I do not rotate my hands! I have learned to swing more up/around than just around. This has shortened my swing and more draw shots. If he kid swung more up the swing-path it would put his forearm horizontal to the ground. That'll be $100

If he does what you say and shores up a few things like posture and stance, he will have a swing in the style of Bobby Jones. But my opinion is he needs to find his own swing and he is well on his way. This instruction though well meaning, is a setback. Develop his great slotted swing his way, don't make him look like Bobby Jones. This is the inherent problem in golf instruction. Don't take my word for it, Gary Player says this all the time-that great swings often get ruined by well meaning instructors.

Wow, some of the nasty comments here from the so-called experts. I met Michael Breed at the Golf Show in Toronto a few years ago and I can't say enough about the man. I don't watch Golf lessons anymore on the Golf Channel ever since Martin Hall took over. He is so full of it, you need a John Deere tractor to haul the cow dung away. He is nauseating to listen to and terribly confusing with all his coat hangers and other contraptions. Michael Breed is a real nice guy, modest and approachable and he knows more about the golf swing than you friggin golf pros that post here. I suggest you read Hank Haney's book or watch Nick Faldo who says the same thing with his preset golf swing drill.
