  • The Morakniv 120 is, for me, the perfect blend of blade length, blade shape and handle size. It is comfortable to use for long periods and the blade gets and stays sharp. The Mora 120 is a great choice for a wood carving knife as well as for musical instrument building or repair. luthier

    I love the porch and wooded background of this video. It reminds me of where my wife grew up in S.C. On the other side of the bush/tree line, her father plowed many acres. And I would spend hours searching for arrowheads. All of her family thought I was kind of weird, ‘cause I was always searching for stuff that they paid no-mind. And now, 55 years later, if they were alive, I’d still be weird. She is the last one.
    Oh well, Don this has nothing to do with the video, just rambling and reminiscing.

    Thank you for posting this video. You recommended around 2-3 weeks ago that I purchase a Mora 120. For health reasons, I’ve only got to use it a little. But enough to know I love it. Super sharp . A very close second is my new to me Opinel #6 CS. Like the Mora, cuts thru basswood like butter.

      i use em both too 😊👍🏼
      THAT difference between Mora 120 and the Opinel series is the thickness of the blade … i use the Opinel more for flattening bigger areas, larger scaled roundings and other cuts, where the blade should go through VERY slightly without bending … but don‘t like to do details, v-cuts, or things i really want the stable and stiff Mora blade to cut with full control and no fear the blade could bend and slip jump out of the wood 😌

  • @paxmortum
    @paxmortum 6 місяців тому +2

    i really love my 4 Mora 120 knives 😊 two laminated, two of em carbon, from which i‘ve been grinding one to get a blade with half of it‘s thickness … still stiff and stabel, but in tight turns and edges on small carvings a little more comfortable to handle 😊
    Mora 120 is one of the best beginnerfriendly knives affordable at fair price

    Hey Don
    I just wanted you to know that I did my first 2 carvings, with the 120, which you turned me on to.
    A mushroom & a small table spoon. Not a pro job, but I’m pretty impressed.
    Thank you for suggesting a way to challenge myself while laying prone in a bed 22 out of 24 hrs.

    I am in awe of people who can make musical instruments!
    I have several good carving knives, but if I need to re-shape something, the 120 is the only knife I even look at. Had the laminated version for several years. Have the high carbon version on order with a leather sheath for it. Can't wait to try it out.

    Since you, yes you Don, suggested I consider taking up wood carving. This was suggested I believe because of my love for knives, and because I have many hours of down time while recovering from a medical procedure that’s a daily war.
    Well, I jumped in and love it. Mushrooms, bears, and spoons. I love love mushrooms.
    Please get to the question. Okay? “Okay.”
    Like you, my favorite is the 120. I have managed to collect a small collection of knives and gouges.
    With this said, and what you said in video, “Do I really really need a Mora 106?”
    I think my flexcut would serve the same purpose.
    Thank you again, Don. I wish I could send you a pic of my dozen creations. Don’t know how, unless telephone message or gmail.

    I have the 120 and the 105, i really like the handle in the 105 , give it a try especially if you have large hands. The larger handle allaws more torque / force to be applied. Nothing beats these moras .

    Amazing presentation. Little by little opinions are heard about the laminated steel in Mora that it does not hold its sharpening as well as advertised. I hear people say that I've had a knife for five or ten years and I'm very happy, of course I always have the knife in its box. You who use it in your work regularly what is believed, does it keep its sharpening satisfactorily?

    • @workbenchknifeandtool
      @workbenchknifeandtool  6 місяців тому +1

      Mine certainly keeps an edge well. I would not hesitate to get a 120 with the solid blade instead of laminated though. I have no complaints with the laminated 120 or the laminated 106 and No.1 I have.

    • @arkas6797
      @arkas6797 6 місяців тому

      @@workbenchknifeandtool Although a bit diplomatic answer I agree with you. The full carbon Mora 120 is Rockwell 58-59 hardened, making it less likely to chip and a bit easier to sharpen than Mora's original multi-layer blade. Thank you.

    Hello again. Another question.
    I would like to purchase a Mora hook spoon knife. Which one would you recommend?
    Mora 122, 123, or 124. To my way of thinking, the double sided seems practical.

    • @workbenchknifeandtool
      @workbenchknifeandtool  Рік тому

      I have the 162 double edge and the 164 single edge. The single edge allows you to use the thumb on your opposing hand to help push the blade. One would think the double to be more useful but I end up using the single more often.

      I believe that the laminated blades were a superior idea many years ago but more modern heat treating methods have likely made it unnecessary. The solid carbon steel blades are hardened to the same level of hardness so from a performance perspective, I doubt you could tell any real difference. I would be happy with either one.
