    We also added after any naps and mealtimes to our puppy’s potty breaks for our two corgis (Vortex and Octavia) but I was taking them out about every 30 mins to an hour and they both picked it up fast though she was a bit more stubborn then he was and we had more accidents from her, but it’s important not to get discouraged and keep trying lol, also if you catch the accident correct them right away as they will associate it with don’t do it if you do, while later on they won’t know what they did.

      @@GandalfTheCorgi I'm worried about 2 things. The quality of food that leads to the smell and the fur of the dog + my pup eating it's own poop 😭

      There are definitely lots of suggestions on food nowadays especially for those who are anti-kibble which I get. We actually have to get prescription food for Gandalf since he did have a number of incidents with the food he had for the first 3 years of his life that sent him to the hospital at least once a year. After he changed his food, he was good to go. In terms of eat 💩 we’re lucky and have not dealt with that. I witnessed another dog do it and it was 🤮. 😂

    Hi, great video with some very useful tips. We're having abit of trouble with my girlfriends mother puppy! He wets mainly in the house and hardly ever goes when hes takin on a walk. Well try out your tips and hopefully, things will improve. How would you ho about correcting you puppy?

      Thanks for the comment! It’s all about consistency and developing a new routine. Praise your pup when he goes outside and when he has an accident, make sure to take him out immediately to the spot you want him to go. If you don’t catch it in the act, dogs have a hard time contextualizing so just make sure the mess is cleaned up well with the enzyme spray to remove all scents. It does no good once your dog does it and you try to correct it after the fact. Just try your best to set it up for success with a proper schedule like the video suggests and the habits will start changing. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

      @GandalfTheCorgi Hi, I just wanted to give you a little update. We followed your adive, and we've made big progress. He wets and poops when we take him for his walk. He still occasionally wets inside the house, but nowhere near, as much as he used to. Thanks again for the advice. it is much appreciated.

    1:18 Hi there!
    My name is Teri and my family and I got our first Corgi pup, Murphy on January 5, 2024. Since this is our first pup, we are completely new to all things puppy.
    Your potty training video is great! I had no idea we should do a puppy pen! Makes complete sense! My question is, how big was puppy pen that you bought for Gandolf? We have crate for Murphy, but not a pen. I just don’t want to get one that is too big at first. He is about 2.5 months old.
    Thank you in advance!😊

      Hi Teri! Glad you enjoyed the potty training video. The puppy pen we got was a 24x24. If you are able to section off portions of your house, baby gates work well too. We used those for Gandalf and our kids and finally was able to get rid of all of them last year since our daughters are older now. Hope this helps!

    Can't emphasize enough that controlling your puppy's space is key to success. We were able to expand the space a bit more aggressively than described in the video with our first pup (she's now 2 and has had run of the house for a year), but with our current pup (4.5 months) we're having to go much slower. I understand that might be due to the difference between boys and girls (first pup is a female).
    @GandalfTheCorgi what's your take on spay/neuter timing? We waited until 8 months for our girl (contract) and are planning on waiting until 6 months for our boy as I understand that it reduces the chance of back problems later.

      Thanks for sharing! Ya I do think that gender may also be an issue. Gandalf was notorious for marking outside of the home. He’s a big sniffer and doesn’t let out all of his pee so on any given walk, he may go up to 10 times which is quite annoying. Your younger one may be exhibiting the same marking behavior especially since you have another dog in your home. It’s interesting that you bring up neutering as we went through the exact debate whether if neutering him would help with his marking. Our breeder had a clause in the contract that we were not to neuter him until after 12 months so we held off as late as we could. I think he was around 11 months when we finally gave in. What’s ironic is he marked me at the vet as I was signing in to neuter him. He was giving me one last complaint. Unfortunately, I don’t think it mitigated the behavior. It might have slightly but to this date, he still likes to mark any foreign object that he is not familiar with on his walks.

      @niceasmd9890 7 місяців тому +1

      @@GandalfTheCorgi That's hilarious that he registered that you were his before his neutering :p Our biggest challenge with Tyr (our boy) is that his breeder had him with softs (towels, etc), so we're trying to get him to stop seeing beds, carpets, etc. as acceptable peeing locations.

    • @GandalfTheCorgi
      @GandalfTheCorgi  7 місяців тому

      Got it. I guess it’s the same concept of pee pads as bad temporary options as mentioned in the video. Good luck. Hope you see progress soon! I’m sure in due time like all things!

    How to deal with the potty breaks if the pup is not yet fully vaccinated/is in quarantine? We live in apartment and do not have any backyard or safe outside space to go for potty breaks whilst still on quarantine after rabies vaccine. :(

    • @GandalfTheCorgi
      @GandalfTheCorgi  4 місяці тому

      Hi there! Yes, it’s more important to keep your puppy safe for the time being. Go ahead and use those puppy pads until after their vaccinations. They are still impressionable and you can un-train them for the use of puppy pads. For example, Gandalf used to go in the backyard of our house but after not using the backyard for a while, he began associating even the backyard as his home and den space. He NEVER goes in the backyard because the scents are simply not there any more. Now we have to take him for a walk before he relieves himself. It’s just really about being consistent and your puppy will understand over time the right place to go. Hope this helps.

    I have two questions:
    1) is it safe to keep towels/blankets/bed inside their crate/den/playpen during their teething period? I heard it could be dangerous as they could bite and ingest.
    2) do i leave my puppy inside the crate with the door closed throughout the night?

    • @GandalfTheCorgi
      @GandalfTheCorgi  4 місяці тому +1

      Hi Sue.
      1. We’ve always had a blanket in the crate for comfort for Gandalf and it was fine. We also had some other chew toys for him and he never had any issues. Hypothetically, I guess something could happen but in his puppy days when he spent lots of time in his crate and pen, he was safe. Part of the purpose of the pen is to keep them safe from other parts of the house that they could potentially harm themselves so overall it should be a safe place because you are controlling the objects and environment that they are spending in unsupervised. Use your judgement and provide objects/toys that are durable so they don’t break into pieces. We’ve used Kongs, antlers and other chew toys.
      2. Yes, we closed the door at night. Once he got used to the routine, he’d actually check himself in there when he was tired and we’d say goodnight to him and shut the door. Because we crate trained Gandalf using positive reinforcement, he loved going in there on his own to nap and to go down for the night.
      Hope this helps and good luck!
