A philosophy professor who dons a Laphroaig shirt, with the framed cover of Coltrane's Blue Train hanging on the wall, talking about Plato and presocratics. This is what I call quality education! Thanks! And cheers!

Even for those who aren't doing anything philosophy related should atleast listen to Prof. Sugrue's talks twice/thrice they'll get hooked up to it, i myself am doing my masters' in astrophysics yet I'm here rn at 3:35 am. & If you're observant, you'll see that mike teaches us a lot overall about our own humane psyche, the way he expresses his own thoughts vs actual facts, the way he delivers the specific point of his talk in each of his lectures etc. if i had to take one of his earlier lectures myself, 80% sure I wouldn't be able to analyze all these points in one go thank God for this channel and the constant uploads.

I'm not a PhD or formally educated on philosophy, so I can't describe it so eloquently, but I agree that Republic is one of the most important books in philosophy. Individuals may more highly value other texts, but Republic is so foundational to the realm of philosophy that you can't ignore it. Like how a quantum physicist couldn't deny the foundational importance of Newton. I like to read the writings of trailblazers in various fields, because seeing people trying to explain subjects without an established lexicon gives me a perspective that you can't get from working within established frameworks. I think in a lot of ways most of the "boom" in philosophy was from times where this was the case, most likely because there weren't any "rules" yet to limit people's thinking, so it's a good book to get people in the mindset of discovery, whether that's self-discovery or discovery of the external world

I just began to watch you on this.
I think you are right. Plato's Republic is the best book of all. I read for a few times. One of my greatest sorrows is that what he said is still applicable to our days.
His theory of form has become a social contract.
Their main argument had become public consent. And the astonishing definition of virtue. And above all Justice. yet he had played the sleight of hand. because the time was not right.
    .I finished with this.
There are days that I contemplate that since the man had invented the wheel, he had been distracted by the noise.
I think of the experience of the time that no intentional sound had ever been made. Wow. I know the level of being supposed to be inferior to us, but with the enjoyment of one's existence, I can not begin to think what it is like to not be distracted by distractions from distraction! That is why the form is what it is.
The world is all that is the case. Form.
    ☺️

I’ve been studying up in the pre-Socratics over last couple of years and I find some of their theories interesting. While they came up with ideas that we would find comical today because we have centuries worth of science to work with; these guys were literally inventing science and technology more or less out of necessity. It shows that even thousands of years ago people had intelligent ideas but struggled to find ways to make their theories fact. We as a society need to encourage individuals to ask questions and look for answers to those questions without taking everything at face value or simply accepting a tradition at face value without weighing it against the weight of Socratic inquiry.

    Hello Professor,
I've been enjoying your lectures and teachings for some time now. I'm in education myself (much lower level than yourself, mind you), and everyday it feels like I'm Sisyphus.
Your teaching is one of the few things keeping me sane these days!
As a request, I'd love to hear an unplugged talk from yourself, Darren, and Peter on the current conflicts going on in the world and how they're shaping history. That is to say, the Ukrainian Conflict and the escalating war in Israel/Palestine. I know you've mentioned the Ukraine war in previous talks, albeit briefly. I think such a talk would be most intriguing.
    Have a blessed day.

When we arrive at a wrong answer to a question, often that's the correct answer to a different question. I think Thrasymachus' assertion that justice is the advantage of the stronger, is on the basis that he believes justice and conflict to be the same thing. Peace is the advantage of the stronger.
2 * pi * r is the circumference of a circle. If you answer your math teacher with 3 * pi * r, they'll say WRONG. But the formula still calculates *something*, in this case, going 1.5x round a circle.

You may enjoy the book "Infinite powers" from Steven Strogatz, in which its shown that Archimedes was a precursor of Newton and Leibnitz by using an infinite number of infinitesimal slices of areas and volumes counterbalancing in an "imaginary scale" to calculate things. He used this method to guess the answer and then proceded to prove it by "proper means" because he didn't considered it rigorous. Newton and Leibnitz proved Archimedes intuition right inventing calculus.

The Guru of Philosophy, Mr Sugrue, I have been listening to your enlightening lectures over the last few years, trying to understand philosophy emanating from the western civilization, encapsulating the real world we experience today. There are 2 lectures I am missing in your collection available on youtube, one was on the FORM idea of Plato, and the criticism of it, and there was another lecture given on Parmenides. They are no longer available on youtube, these were the lectures when you were very young and handsome, and was wearing a Khaki jacket. I hope you know which lectures i am talking about. Please upload them if you have them, because they are the Gem of GEMS. God Bless you.
