First time commenting. Dr. Sugrue and Dr. Staloff have been instrumental in my intellectual journey. I have shared their lectures with many of my friends and we have had fruitful discussions dissecting their content. I am currently working through the "Great Books of the Western World". I would not have started this project without the spark that you both gave me. Thank you for your work.
That sounds like an interesting endeavor! Do you have the actual set of Great Books of the Western World, or just do check the list and get them individually in any edition?
This has been the best Christmas present I have ever received!! Professor Sugre and Professor Staloff discussing who they would have loved to have heard in a moment of time in history . What a treasure and delight!!!! Humorous conversation eloquently with a mouthful for myself to contemplate on. Thank you both tremendously. Also, I have great anticipation to hear more of these conversations. Happy holidays to both of you, your families, and friends , plus to all who are listening. An added thanks to Professor Sugre's daughter for assisting her father with these videos. 🎄☃️🎄
When I was in college I listened to the Teaching Company's lecture series titled "Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition." It features a number of lecturers, but there were two that stood out: Michael Sugrue and Darren Staloff. They may have been better teachers to me than those whose classes I was attending. I used to try to sound like them when giving talks for my classes. Thank you both for what you have contributed to my intellectual life.
I am listening to this one again this morning. Another book I love is "The Art of War" & Other Eastern & Other Eastern Classics of Eastern Philosophy and one has to read slowly, at least I do with all the stories in that one. 1. The Art of War (with Commentary) Sun Tze and His Book 2.The Tao Te Ching 3. Confucian Analects 4. The Great Learning: The Text of Confucius 5. The Doctrine of Mean 6.The works of Mencius The book is very important in understanding geo-poltics and religious divisions in our world today, especially since China has an understanding of their culture thousands of years ago, even with their short comings. They know how to pay chess with patience, and they are 15 paces ahead of all other players as many countries sign up for Brics and create their own money against the capitalist dollar. I am against all wars. Although one has no control over these powers of psychopaths in some nations, look at the fight with Nato. Socrates taught Plato, Aristotle taught Ghenis Khan and my favorite philosopher Heraclitus stated one cannot step in the same rivers twice. I must humbly conclude that I don't have all the answers except stand with those who have the intelligence and wisdom of American history and world histories, philosophy, theology, sciences and with those who have moral compass for what is just. One breath at a time and live with torches burning to help humanity for the betterment of our world. ❤🗽🌏 Who would I have loved to have met in history was Spinoza, as his family and friends and the Jewish faith excumunicated him from their faith. The Christians did not care for him either. When he learned Greek and Latin, his mind opened up, I suspect, as he was able to read old texts. I would have been holding his hand and cooking and cleaning for him as he wrote his ethics. I would have been quite as a little mouse, and maybe taken a walk with him and asked questions. That would have been a walk that would have been daily. Lol!!!😂😂 With the deepest appreciation and respect for this discussion again this morning. ❤ With the deepest love and admiration for both of your love for your professions of philosophy, history, and books, I thank you both.
*Insert generic and heartfelt thanks for being a fly on the wall for this conversation* and a special acknowledgement for the fact that the cumulative iq in this conversation is a greater numerical value than the amount of bandwidth required to post it online. A true rarity and so very thankful and excited for the continuation of the series 🙏🙏
Thank you, professors Staloff and Sugrue. Both of your lectures were a great stepping stone on my initial trek into philosophy, and hearing both of you in this more informal format is great. I hope you continue with it.
Great to see you both in conversation! It was a pleasure talking to Dr Sugrue (or "Mike"), we're also looking forward to speaking with Darren soon! Best wishes from us at RNCM 😊
I love that many of Dr Sugrue's answers to the fly-on-the-wall question are these inexplicable instances of diplomacy, mutual understanding, disaster-avoidance. Not just the spectacle and material culture of history, but specifically the human, divide-bridging moments. Because this is what's so desperately needed in so many places right now.
Wow, Yes! This is what the internet needs! What an honor to have the both of you conversing like this.. Keep it up, we'll be here to listen! Thank you!
Although I watch Dr. Sugrue more often, I have to take my hat off to Dr. Staloff because he made introductions to a few authors I haven't seen around often. A good example is Mircea Eliade, who I have only seen being discussed online before by Jordan Peterson. The work you two give us all for free on UA-cam is incredible, thank you both for it! Also, cheers from Brazil :)
Amazing conversation. This is actually the first time I realized that this man was a latter lived Michael Surgue. I actually thought Michael had passed and the channel was simply continuing with another great mind of philosophy and history. I regret this misunderstanding and will return to view all of the past videos I missed on the channel. I have a great respect, administration, and appreciation for both of you sirs. Thank you for everything

Personal histories and engagement with history and philosophy. Let us get to know you! Really enjoy your videos. At the very least, they've helped me become more aware of the major influences in philosophy historically. Looking forward to reading more classics in years to come. Thanks for all your efforts!
We can reminisce about conversations from the past and speculate what was said, but when it comes to the topic of discussion between Mike & Darren will have a record. A record that we can all access; 80 thousand years from now a person will come across this video as a historical record.
This is precious. Drs Staloff and Sugrue thanks so much for putting this together. Often philosophers are always something else first, by interest or necessity. To wit, Spinoza grinding lenses or Hume filing books. Indeed, one of my professors who taught logic was hired off into the private sector during the first wave of AI companies back in the 80's. Going back in history tho', I've always wanted to have dinner with David Hume, the smartass with the supremely keen intellect who hid period porno in his library. Thank you guys...the freedom to think deeply is pure freedom, if only for an instance, or dinner...
Your depth of knowledge and sincerity with which you convey it is not only incredibly impressive, but also very inspiring! Wishing you only the best, and very grateful to you for publishing your videos! Thank you
I’ve recently read master and margarita. I think there’s something to Christ curing Pilate’s headache and what Michael was trying to convey about Christ acting as Truth. His act of healing was better than any words he could’ve offered Pilate.
Hello from France. Thank you so much for this new series. One idea that I had for a potential episode is the idea of “Fiction and Philosophy”. I remember Dr. Sugrue saying something along the lines of “sometimes novels do a better job of capturing the spirit of philosophy than dense academic treatises.” I read the magnificent Magic Mountain a few months ago and I couldn’t help thinking that it captured the spirit of “being in the world” and the complex nature of “time” that so often is associated with Heidegger - but more clearly and compassionately than Heidegger himself. Knowing that they were basically contemporaries, but with very different politics, I found this very interesting. Anyway, I think it would be fascinating to do a series on novels that really capture philosophy and history in a beautiful way, for those of us who still read fiction.
Indeed, I believe he reiterated that maxim when discussing one of my Top 3 of ALL Time. McCarthys' 'Blood Meridian'. I see parallels with the indiscriminate bloodshed in that Novel that reminds me of the Milosian Dialogues. It may as well been the Glanton Gang that sailed up to the aisle of Milos that fateful day...
Listened twice already. These two have such a rich and comprehensive scope of study. The world opens up. Approaching history, theology and literature with such enthusiasm. It's contagious.
Awesome stuff! Thank you so much for putting in all this effort to educate all of us who are aspiring to follow in the shoes of great scholars such as yourselves.
Thank you letting us climb on your mountain of knowledge and enjoy the view. As a suggestion for the upcoming videos, I have the following idea. I remember in one of the lectures, Dr. Sugrue said something like “one might obtain Epicurus if you interpret Socrates in a certain way”. Wouldn’t it make a nice train of thought if Dr. Sugrue start from the ancient times and arrive in the modern times in say 5 human steps (e.g. Socrates->Epicurus->Marx etc.) It might also help the audience to have an introductory insight of the topology of philosophers in the spectrum of ideas. In other words, imagine an idea (a meme) changing hosts (humans) for centuries while evolving. Thanks again for all of your lectures, Best of luck,
This was great! I watched the entire episode and as a former radio programmer, I would say there is very good chemistry with Michael and Darren. Two of the most brilliant and fascinating lecturers one will ever encounter. As an historian myself, I would love to hear a series from Michael and Darren on the American Civil War. There were so many compelling moments from Lincolns election to the surrender at Appomattox that one could never cover it all. From the Unions Invasion of the South to Lee's Invasion of the North.
I take this chance to thank you Mr. Sugrue, I love you very much since you've helped me to understand many scholars, some of them I didn't even known bevor. I've learned a lot, What I've missed in all your lectures is philosophical anthropology especially of Helmut Plessner, not so much of Arnold Gehlen or Max Scheler. I'd love to ear your thoughts and knowledge, especially a critical analysis. Please do. I wish you health and happynes
Man I really enjoyed this, I've heard a whole lot of your tapes but it's so good to see a free flowing dialogue without a specific topic. The free exploration of ideas with Darren was very enjoyable and thought provoking. Thanks brother ❤️
Thank you both for sharing! Dr. Sugrue, please finish your world history book. I very much look forward to reading it! Be healthy gentlemen and keep the episodes coming.
I like the format...its like trying to find a place where to start peeling a large unknown fruit. I've always loved the strong current literature, history and philosophy of history running through both these gentlemen's lectures on the western intellectual tradition and philosophy. Thank You. Happy Holidays.
I love learning from you like this I hope that more people are able to enjoy this in the future. Thanks for making my Christmas even more enjoyable! Merry Christmas guys!
Disagreements and agreement about Nietzsche and Heidegger. As I think this would make for a great historical look at the connections between their philosophies. But really I’m very happy to be learning from this channel!
Thanks so much to both professors and the producer for taking the time to put out this video! I’d also love to hear you all discuss your favorite works of literature. It would be fascinating as well to learn what you all think about contemporary philosophy (particularly if any new intellectual ground is being trod). Thanks again!! Looking forward to the next video!
I wish the two old colleagues could continue kicking out episodes like there was no tomorrow..how exciting it must be for the two to re-unite after a 3rd of a century
This is incredible, thank you!
WOW good job donating man

Wow, I wish I could but glad you were able to.
It would be great if you two talked about each one's top 10 favourite books !
Strongly agree
Michael, do you still have the old glasses?
favorite books or most influential books for their life!
Agreed
Top ten lists are usually a sign of running out of ideas. It would be a good list, I'm sure.
I said "no fucking way" out loud when I saw Mike and Darren doing something together again
please do more of these!!!!!
Ur such a nerd 😊
Hahahaha same, Darren is awesome!
@The Nasty
Who would you like to speak with if you had the choice ? Lol
@@cheri238 that’s a really tough choice for me! What about you?
How do I find their original content that they did together
I'll gladly trade Staloff's ponytail and Sugrue's corduroy jacket for this - two wise, lifelong friends talking philosophy and history.
still, those two signifiers still mean alot to us, no?

I've learned a lot, What I've missed in all your lectures is philosophical anthropology especially of Helmut Plessner, not so much of Arnold Gehlen or Max Scheler. I'd love to ear your thoughts and knowledge, especially a critical analysis. Please do. I wish you health and happynes
What a blessing to the world!
Please start a podcast. You can upload a 10 hour video and I would gladly sit through it till the end
Man I really enjoyed this, I've heard a whole lot of your tapes but it's so good to see a free flowing dialogue without a specific topic. The free exploration of ideas with Darren was very enjoyable and thought provoking.
Thanks brother ❤️
Ps - I'd sure as hell like to hear your thoughts on Richard Rorty. Beyond his being a "positivist with a broken heart"
Thank you both for sharing! Dr. Sugrue, please finish your world history book. I very much look forward to reading it!
Be healthy gentlemen and keep the episodes coming.
Outstanding as usual!
The erudition on display is so impressive. I would love it if there were a ‘further reading’ for such episodes. Wonderful.
Incredible video, Michael. Thank you so much for posting
New favorite podcast!
Sugrue u are an inspiration🍻
Yes, he really was. One of my favorite lecturers. I started listening to him and Staloff back in the late 1990s. Michael left us too soon.
I like the format...its like trying to find a place where to start peeling a large unknown fruit. I've always loved the strong current literature, history and philosophy of history running through both these gentlemen's lectures on the western intellectual tradition and philosophy. Thank You. Happy Holidays.
Really appreciate this one. Keep going.
I love learning from you like this I hope that more people are able to enjoy this in the future. Thanks for making my Christmas even more enjoyable! Merry Christmas guys!
Thank you, that was a wonderful discussion
INCREDIBLE, MORE!
Disagreements and agreement about Nietzsche and Heidegger. As I think this would make for a great historical look at the connections between their philosophies. But really I’m very happy to be learning from this channel!
such a fascinating conversation been you two
My Christmas wish has been granted!
Would love to hear a discussion on the Stalin era of the Soviet Union, particularly as it relates to the system of gulags and work camps.
