- Here is my review on my Charter Arms Undercover 38 special snub nose. This 38 was passed down from my uncle to myself. It might even be considered a Saturday Night Special.

Sir, thank you for this video on a "classic" snubnose revolver, the Charter Arms Undercover, I packed a Charter Arms Undercoverette .32 as a back-up in my job as a cop. I packed that little Charter Arms .32 from late 1970's unto my 2016 retirement. After retiring, I sent my little Undercoverette back to Charter Arms for refurbishment. I also sent a short bio on this fine firearm and the nice folks at Charter Arms refinished and replaced worn parts, thus making my snubby a new gun. Reliable service from the great people at Charter Arms. My Charter Arms snubby had been with me in some of the worst of weather conditions and was well worn at retirement. It served me well as a life insurance policy that all cops need in today's real time!
That's a great story thank you for sharing. Wow you were on the force for a very long time. That emphasizes that charter "carried a lot and shot a little" I bet.
My grandfather carried this exact model when he was a sheriffs deputy as a back up weapon. He had to fire it 5 times over the years and it done what it was supposed to.
+Dude_piston88 Thank you for sharing, good comment.
I just had my Nannys undercover 38 passed down to me,our stories are similar, hers wasn't working when I got it but I had a gun smith fix it for me, it has the holster with it also, I have some really nice pieces but my Nannys little 38 puts a smile on my face and tears in my eyes, awesome video.
Thank you Anthony.
Yep nice old gun, I call mine 'Shorty'. Picked it up in south Texas back in the early '80's and still carry on my ankle. Nice backup gun.
Dave Barker good stuff, thanx for the comment
I bought 2 of these with 3 inch barrels. The wife and I have fired hundreds of rounds each. Have to tighten screws occasionally. We both love them.
I bought one in late 1979 new for 135 $. I have shot plus p ammo in it. As you know it’s a one piece frame which makes it stronger. It was stolen out of my truck in 1995 at a K MART PARKING LOT . 11 years later the police dept sent me a letter in 2006 stating they think they had some property of mine. I went to see them. I asked had it been used in a robbery. They said no it’s clean. I would not even take it out of the bubble wrap envelope thinking it would be trash. At home I took it out and it looked like the day it was stolen. It still looks good almost new. My grandson carries it now. With the small grip with plus p it is a bit tough on my old hands.
That's a great story thanks for sharing glad the CA is still in the family.
Fun fact I know I'm 8 years late but I just recently bought one for 300. You can shoot +p because it's a one piece frame design and it's steel body not like the airweights. Even on the chartarms website says they can handle +p. Good shooter I shot 50 and my wrist was hating me lmao
Good info this Charter is 50 years old at least, I'll stay away from +P
Love mine...pocket carry last 40 years no issues looks new. 👌 keep your powder dry pilgrims....
In my experience those old Undercovers have great sights. They're big and square with space around the front sight when you line them up. Bigger and better than on my M-649 S&W and easier to line up. I met a guy whose wife would routinely hit a gong at 100 yards with one of those things.
I love it! My everyday concealed carry. ‘65 hasn’t failed to fire once. I myself have put over 400 rounds into it and I’m sure it’s taken much more that what I’ve put through it and it continues to work like a dream.
Thank you, mines from my uncle how's no longer with is works fine but I'd rather have a j frame.
In just purchased as my backup piece, it's perfect for my small hands and I love the single/double action option. Thank you for the show and tell.
Ana make sure you take it to the range a few times and shoot it!
@@biged7175 I took it last weekend as soon as it came in. It's a strong little thing compared to my HI point 9mm. It is now my carry peice.
@@XiulanArisu good stuff, it's better than a high point.
Same one mine was made in 66 I bought it from a friend who is an FFL dealer it was almost brand new ... Got fat wood grips and the same little ones you got there too it's a good little back up piece
I recently used mine to dispatch a four foot rattlesnake using .38 caliber shot shells. One shot did the trick but, I used a second to ensure the kill. The snake was threatening my dogs.
Good stuff.
That ain't the gun missing, it's him.
I keep hearing the same thing in all of the videos I watch on the .38 charter arms. "The sights are not good." "The sights suck." "The sights this and that." I hate that it's your video that I happen to explode on, but Jesus. It's a snub nose revolver. You aren't supposed to be doing trick shots with it, you're supposed to acquire your threat and Jack Ruby their ass.
Great point I agree, I love accurate fire arms
3 inch groups at 20 yds, what do ya want, bogey man's dead. easy shooting, I use cast powder coated bullets, no issuses
What did that ex Navy Seals gun expert say in the NRA ad several months back? "All firearms are 'purpose' driven".
Thank you
That's right
Nice Demonstration
I just got one from the pawn shop under $240
I can't wait to go to the range & try it out
Thanks for Sharing
My dad recently passed and I have the one he bought in the early '70s. VERY sentimental. Would never part with it. Cool gun.
Good stuff, there not bad.
I have two of these. The first one I bought in December of 1987, the day I was sworn in on my first LEO job. It rode BU/OD duty for the next few years, and has always been a solidly-fit, well performer. It's handsome, too, with it's rare (then) shrouded barrel/ejector assembly. It's sitting next to me now as I type this, though it is rarely carried these days. I'l describe the second in my next comment.
I bought 2 of these, when they first came out. 3 inch barrel. The Wife and I both love them. Never have any trouble with them. Great little pistols.
Charter Arms revolvers are far from being Saturday night specials. I own Colt, S&W and Ruger Revolvers. I also own 2 Charter Arms Undercover Specials and a Charter Arms Mag Pug 357. They are all great shooters and are well manufactured. I have never had any issues with Charter Arms firearms. Pull the trigger they go bang everytime.
Great comment and true also, they are good simple revolvers.
I just bought a new model undercover in stainless with wood grips, waiting on it to get here , this will be my first charter arms and my second .38
Good stuff glad to hear.
What you pay o git an older one it shots great and i used it as my vehicle gun since it don't cost a lot. I gate to leave my $800 sig sauer in the truck.
Great video bigED, well done. I have four Charters, and love them all.
+Stevie BEE Thank you.
(Comment 2) My second one belonged to my dad, whom I did not know growing up. We re-connected when I was in my thirties, and I learned he had also done time in LE. He also had one of these, made in 1966. It was one of two guns he was down to by the time we re-connected, the other being his Ruger Service Six duty revolver. Both came home with me upon his death in 2010. His C/A shoots pretty well, too.
I just bought one a couple of weeks ago at my local gun shop. Beautiful gun in stainless steel and wood grips. The only issue I have with it is that the cylinder is stiff when u try to open it. I'm hoping a hundred rounds through it will loosen it up. We'll see
Lots of guns are like that, just use oil and work the cylinder open a few hundred times it will be fine.
Check the screw in the frame where the cylinder locks into it. Straight below the firing pin hole. On 4 of my CA revolvers, that screw backs out from turning every time the cylinder is taken out and put back in. The screw should be flush or just below the frame. Once it comes out from the frame, the cylinder opens hard. Charter told me it is a very common problem with their guns. They told me to loc-tite the screw. I did- but it didn't fix the problem.
One more thing re: +P ammo. C/A does not recommend +P ammo only because they feel the bullet leaves the short barrel before all the powder has burned, negating any extra effect of the +P load (Speer's Gold Dot Short Barrel addresses this.) But, C/A does say, on their web site, that the guns will handle it without risk of damage (like any gun, though, it might accelerate wear.) I've never tried it, though.
Nice backup close range gun.
I have one of these. Mine is circa 1980. Bought it used. I put a larger combat grip on it as it can be a bit snappy for me. Its my bedside home protection gun. Nice review!!
Thank you!
dude that gun was also used when Mark David Chapman used to kill John Lennon in New York City on December 8th 1980
Was advertised as "unbreakable beryllium copper firing pin" on COMBAT HANDGUNS march 1983. I remember thse revolvers.
Good stuff, I'm sure they were cutting edge back then.
Great gun. I just bought one. I love revolvers. I put Rosewood grips on it. I use Hornady Critical Defense rounds in it. Glad you got it to remember your uncle by. I think mine will shoot +P. Mine is in my rotation for EDC.
That's a good edc rig.
I love mine and if you can put +P in a s&w air weight I'm pretty sure it can handle +P and it does mine was made in 85 I got respect for these lil monster hickok45 hit the gong at 80 yards with the 642 model and the undercover is what gave that gun life
Very cool, with the longer barrel I can see finding the holster is hard, might want to look for a S&W J frame holster
I don't know why everyone says these CA guns aren't Smith & Wesson's, Ruger's or Colts, I have 4 Charter Arms revolvers and they are every bit as reliable as my Colts, Ruger's and Smith's and they are well built too. I also have a Taurus and a Rossi that IMO are just as good as the rest as well. My Charter Arms have smoother DA triggers and shoot smoother then my higher dollar ones IMO. I love my Charter Arms pistols.. Keep shooting your revolver and don't sell it. Thanks for sharing.
Never owned a Rossi, but in terms of fit and finish S&W are tops my .02
I have an old gun ARMS I would like to know how much it is currently priced
Thank you, it was very informative. 👍👍👍
Your welcome Rebecca!
Nice review . I have the same one and carried as my back up in the 90's. Your gun may be 40 to 50 yrds. It is a reliable piece. Nice story.
Thank you John and Happy new years. I'm gonna guess you'll enjoy my Smith model 10 review as well.

I love my '65 Undercover! Little puppy is pretty accurate at 50 yards on a 12" target and I was hitting clay pigeons setup at 25 yards. Yours looks the same as mine. Great little gun!
That's some great shooting with that 38, much better than I.
@@biged7175 everyone online is an Olympic caliber marksman.
@@Azeminad lol I'm not
Hi big ed is the gun registered or not and can you get a license to carry it??
I still like the 38spl for protection good video on that popular gun.
Absolutely, thank you
I carried on of those as a backup and or off-duty gun for decades. I qualified PPC with it too. The sights you call 'not good' were vastly superior to those on the S&W Chief's Special or Bodyguard of the 60s and 70s and about the same as what was on the Colt Police Positive or Officer Model pistols. .Wadcutter ammo works well in them. So do reversed wadcutters. Stiff +P or +P+ ammo can crack or burst the cylinder. Put some yellow or White nail polish on the front sight for a faster sight picture. Add a Tyler T grip for a better hold. Something once sold called Bianchi Speed Strips were the best way to reload it quickly. If you were buying them direct from CA as a police officer or deputy you could get a bobbed hammer version that does not snag on clothing when pulling it out quickly.
thank you for the info, nail polish need to try that out.
@@biged7175 I like the one called 'Banana Yellow'
I work in strip mines in SW Florida and nowadays the MSAHA would be writing fines for a weapon at a mine site. BTW every on has one in their truck.
What’s the price on this gun and where can I get one ?
Funny but as you describe your Rem. 130gn FMJ target .38 ammo I recall how that was what they supplied us with to load (and reloads) our S&W M15s we carried in U.S. AF Security Police. And yet all I ever heard about it was how it would drop 'em stone cold dead!
Good stuff.
Gotta love the gravel truck background noice! Good looking revolver though!
You might enjoy this video years later same spot.

I received the same .CA UNDERCOVER 38spl on a trade and the cylinder release does not work. I cant seem to figure out how to fix it. I just remove the cylinder with the ejection rod as of now. Otherwise it works fine. Thanks
AstonandJoy lube it with WD40 and it will pop right back out
when you get it open simply loosen the flat head release screw a quarter turn at a time until its as easy as you want it. worst design for this good little gun. other than that it works great
My Undercover was made in the early '80s and has, I believe, the aluminum frame. Like the moron that I am, the first thing I did when I got it was to put 50 rounds of +P through it. BAD CALL! After realizing that something was wrong with it (cylinder release stopped working), I did some research that revealed that +P is contraindicated in this gun. Luckily, my local gun repair guy got it working again. Now I feed it standard ammo only, and it shoots great. Qualified easily for my CWP with it. The instructor commented on the undercover's accuracy. Outshot all of the autofeeders in the class that day!
If you have the older Undercover, STAY AWAY FROM +P!!! Otherwise, enjoy the light weight and concealability....
Most of my older guns I don't shoot much, I have no need to run +P in them anyway. I very rearly run +p in anything I own. I will shoot hot biffalo bore 357 in my S&W 686. Glad you got your Undercover fixed. You can buy a new S&W 38 for around $425.00 that will digest +p all day.
The grip frame is aluminum but the cylinder and main frame is steel...and yes...no plus p
Hi Ed... need help. I am a 62 yr.old woman who inherited a Charter Arms Undercover .38 spl from my father. I keep it loaded for protection. I can't figure out if it has a safety. Going on a camping trip this coming weekend to Tioga Co. with my daughter... want to take it with me... but does it have a safety? Thanks much... deeinbucksco.
I bought the charter arms undercover.38 and shot it at range using hollow points and shot pretty good
Nice revolvers for the money.
Interesting to know, mine is at least 35-40 years old. I shot 38Sp+P out of my S&W 686 I like the standard presure Hornady Critical Defense 110 gr out of this gun.
That's what I shoot outta mine.
How much is the price of the gun ARMS
I like the mountain print belt you have there.
That is Sugar Loaf in main love snowboarding there.
Sure drop a shell in the sand and still shoot like a champ come on dude it's a American made solid little shooter stop hating
I got mine from my uncle who has passed, I was in Germany after WWII
Great video I just got one off a buddy for $200 needs a little TLC but in otherwise great shape from the video action looks smooth but sure can kick I gotta give it a try
There nice revolvers for the money.
Thank you
hey big ed i know this guy has a the same gun for sale hes asking $300 i dont know how old it is tell me is that a good price????
That's too much, Buds gun shop has it new for $350 offer him $250
Big ED 👌🏾 thanks man
thanks for the video.... I was going to BB you on the 6th shot on a 5 shooter but you picked up on it... I have an older CA Off Duty .38 and just bought the wife a CA Undercover Lite .38 ... both are nice shooters however the newer one, the undercover lite is made better then my off duty... the cylinder gate is built better and fits much better into the frame. it also opens up a lot smoother then my off duty. while it is no S&W it is a very nice gun and a much better gun then a Taurus or Rossi, in my opinion.
and PINSTRIPES 4EVER!!!
+Floridapirate1 I agree I like the new CA and have been thinking off adding another one to my collection. They are no S&W but better than Taurus or Rossi. You might like this Bull Dog CA review.
ua-cam.com/video/MpvnRgEzaew/v-deo.html
+Big ED have you seen the youtube videos of the Taurus going off even with the safety on? just google "taurus goes off with safety on" ... a man in Texas lost his son to these garbage guns and a man in Alabama too... maybe you can do a video on this subject... keep up the good work... thanks.
+Floridapirate1 All that would be prevented carrying with an empty chamber.
+Big ED I agree, but I still would not want a gun that has this defect.
If you want to shoot +P, get the Charter Arms Pug in .357. It will shoot .38 +P all day as it is rated for .357 Magnum, way more powerful than any .38 +P
I'm aware of that check out this video of mine S&W 686+

Very Cool
Thats correct
I have had mine 30 years, I still carry it on my daily walks.
Pitbulls,Antifa/BLM, bring it on
"make my day !"😉
The CA Undercover IS NOT a Saturday Night Special. Consider looking up what that means. CA's are exceptionally great guns. They're priced right and engineered very well. You'll have no problems shooting the crap out of that gun.
I agree they are good guns.
I love my .38 I call her poppie
Hi Ed, I have a Charter Arms 32 calber, Under Cover. It looks just like your gun. Same grips the same every thing. I bought it new in 1980. They are good guns. If you ever decide to sell that gun. I would be interested in buying it. Let me know if you ever decide to sell it, Thanks
+Thomas Tommy It's the only think I have left from my uncle Rory, I will keep it since it's not worth a fortune, thank's for the offer.
But you take the left action on the right west of the coil to the center, thats how it rolls.
I don't understand?
The gun that was used to kill John Lennon...
Yes it was
***** Most homicides are committed with cheap handguns.
John sucked so awesome!
I'd have a hard time thinking about that as I tried that model! JL was an innocent man!!
then it's Combat Proven
I have an old 32-pistol ARMS gun
It's a great gun as long as you know how to handle it correctly and have a steady hand other than that I prefer a Glock 9
I agree, I also love my glock 19 9mm
If it was a Saturday night special they wouldn't be allowed to sell them still due to a law passed in the 70's...It is an inexpensive firearm but NOT a Saturday night special. Glad you have the history attached to your handgun. Makes it all that much more special..
Jonathon Blackburn It does.
Big ED got the wife one in 1978 but in nickel , allways works , have shot + p but hard on the hands .. 7 yards shoot at the heart hit dead center ..
Roy Rodriguez Good Stuff
2016 still works every time ..
Thats not quite true. I own this gun, and consider it to be my Saturday night special, Its just a slang word, there is no official definition of a Saturday Night Special firearm. Saturday night specials are considered to be any cheap, small compact gun that is considered easy to obtain and purchase. Your thinking of the Gun Control Act of 1968 which banned the import and manufacture of several guns, mostly revolvers made by Röhm Gesellschaft, because it was a cheap firearm favored by African Americans, (the law was considered some what controversial and racist). Because of the law several manufactures actually started producing new guns that are pretty much Saturday night specials to fill the hole in the market. A lot of people consider any old snub-nosed .38 spl to be a Saturday night special.

You are shooting slow enough that you should know how many rounds you sent down range.I saw you pull the trigger on a spent round.Yes it is an accurate revolver in the right hands.
alan brown Your right, but I rarely shooting Charter its a five shot, my other that a shoot a lot is a seven shot S&W
Accuracy is down to the indian, not the arrow. Quit blaming the gun. It is a snub nosed revolver. It is for a body sized target at short"ish" distance.
I like the Indian Arrow reference I'll remember that.
I have an old 32-pistol Armis gun
i have the same gun i shoot plus p 160 grain all the time it is fine it is rated for plus p
That's a bridgeport made gun....1st gen, charter does not recommend plus p
i never seen such tiny grips like they have these days
It's mostly driven by the idea of concealed carry. I even put smaller grips on all my large revolvers so there easier to carry.
Close up & personal
Isn't this the type of gun that killed John Lennon?
Yes it was.
@@biged7175 if I need to kill any beatles would you let me borrow yours?
@@jacklennon1035 that's no nice.
NO! It was a pathetic jerkoff named Mark Chapman who killed the equally pathetic jerkoff John Lennon. Chapman used a Charter Arms Undercover as a weapon. Just like David Berkowitz used a Charter Arms Bulldog.

I agree close quarters self defense.
are you firing on a construction site?
