Menelik II: The Battle of Chelenqo - 1887

- Ethiopian histories often gloss over Menelik's southern conquests. That said, glossing over these campaigns is perhaps the biggest mistake one can make if they want to understand Ethiopian history - they were critical for the rise of Ethiopia's most famous Emperor. After years of preparation, this future Emperor is now preparing himself for one of his most important conquests - that of the city of Harar.

Who is maliliq or malalakh??
Thank you for describing Harar, the vibrant, diverse city it has always been. Harar city was home to many Muslim ethnic groups. Well done on including all involved in this battle, one of the worse days for Muslims in the region.
I love Menilik. He is the father of the modern Ethiopia. He was a war hero and very known by his kind and compassionate hearted king.
he is a killer he is hitler of ethiopia
@@bostonsawyer8355 😂 easy bro. When creating a country people get killed just be thankful to minlik who unified our country
Menelik the Oromo? I thought you guys didn't like that
Overall the documentary is good. Here is what is missing
1) Harari flag
2) Menilik had 35 thousand Amhara solders, 70 thousand Oromo solders and 112 British soldiers in charge of Artillery and consultants
3) Amir Abdulahi had 4 thousand Harari solders, 3 thousand Somali soldiers, and 2 thousand Oromo solders
4) the Battle of Chelenqo lasted 11 houses and 45 minutes
Source: Kabir Ahmed Abdujalil who in 1973 at age of 109 in the city of Jigjiga. He lost his father and brother in the battle of Chelenqo. He founded the city of Jigjiga after he, his brother and mother were expelled from city of Harar in February 1887.
hey, thanks for the response. A few replies, though:
- I didn't use any flags in this video; if I were to use the Harari flag, id also have to use the Shewan tricolor (which I did not)
- I am basing my numbers on a scholarly source, and an account from an interview with someone who was actually present in the battle. I don't quite know why Menelik would mobilize an excess of 105,000 men for a campaign where that number wasn't needed. Menelik probably mobilized less than 10,000 to Embabo, Guté Dilli, and less than 30,000 to Azulé -- if I recall. The Harari estimates may well be incorrect, but if I can't actually read a source, I can't exactly use it as reference.
- the length of the battle is disputed; I believe I left it out of the video, as it's impossible to prove one way or another and ultimately not directly relevant. The impression I have is that it was shorter rather than longer, though.
Menelik - best strategist ever Africa ever known. If it was not for King Menelik, we all would have been speaking French or English. We now speak Oromiffa, Amharic, Somali....Thanks Meneleik we never was colonial subjects and will never be.
Thanks to Yohanees for the north and west, thanks to Menelik for the south, West and North Thanks to Alula for the North Thanks to Teklebirhan of Gojjam for the west, without this noble warriors we would indeed be speaking Itali, french or Arabic, they preserved Ethiopia for us.
I don't have any to thank you. It's a truth that some don't want to accept it. Thanks to him and to other heroes we now are proud of being Ethiopian because we are not colonised.
Bs
He was a murderer and conquerer. Only successful because of ties to Rome.
@@Kalkidan727😂😂😂
As always... Awesome presentation
men this empror is the greatest empror long live menelik long live ethiopia
what's so good about conquer and genocide
As usual, great video overall. However you have a few very long pauses and I'm not sure if they were intentional or not. I think the video would be much better without them.
This was So Awesome The Ethiopian Knights
Keep it up bro
Among the Harari solders, 700 of them are newly wedding men and 500 of them among these newly wedding men were Haviz (who memorized the Holly Quran by heart)
These videos are beyond underrated
Can you make a video about the Oromo expansion conquest and the Machaa Oromo conquest
very good piece of history again.
Great Ethiopia Great Work I Like it
Ok what led Minilik to Harar was the fact that Egyptians trespassed the agreement they signed with Minilik.
yea
Awesome video!
MUY BUEN VIDEO. GRACIAS, MUCHAS GRACIAS POR COMPARTIR LA HISTORIA DE ETIOPÍA DE FORMA AMENA E ILUSTRADA. Gracias por habilitar subtítulos en ESPAÑOL. Saludos desde Barinas, VENEZUELA.
Great job !
My great great grandfather fought at this battle 💪🏽
Where the sources ?
My great-great grandfather 5 generations ago fought in this battle against the brutal invasion of Menelik II.
Which invasion are you talking about. Minilik is just the Kings of the King💚💛❤
@@Kalkidan727 When he invaded the Emirate of Harar during the Battle of Chalanqo. It is also estimated that hundreds of mosques were eradicated in Harar and that 11K people died in West Arsi in one day, one town. How do you say Menelik II is good when he did this?
As a human I don't accept the fact that mosques were eradicated or that any people were killed but Atse Minilik can't kill or give an order to kill someone intentionally, I can guarantee you. Battles could cause many death but why does the Emir forced him to change his religion? Didn't they know that those topics can cause problems? What is religion for you? Would you like to be forced to change yours? I do respect other religions but no one could force me to change mine, it's my identity. And to answer your question, maybe he have done faults too but he also sacrificed a lot for own people and for his beloved, modernised country:The Greater Ethiopia. He fought for her unity and liberty. That's why I like lim, he is just a good example of a great leader and heroes contrary to Abiy.
@@Kalkidan727 National Public Radio estimated that hundreds of mosques were destroyed in Harar. If Menelik II made a surprising attack to the Sultan and destroyed Harar's mosque, how would you expect the Sultan to be even near to Menelik II? Have you not heard of the Aanolle massacre either? It is widely in consensus that in Arsi area, Menelik II's army cut woman's breasts, men's hand and then massacred 11,000 people. Menelik nor the Arsi Oromo had military that size. So if Menelik's army cut woman's breasts, men's hands and people which are larger than there armies, would you not sense that it is targeted to civilians?
Feel like This Channel is underestimated , Very low subscriber numbers .😢
Menelik is the King of Kings. No one can deny the truth. He united his people, created the modern Ethiopia, and fought for her liberty until his death with of course his wife, the lioness of the horn, Etegie Taytu and other heroes💚💛❤. And yaa I forgot to say it: Menelik is always the King of the Kings.
watching from Fiji vinaka
This video shows that this king is truly a visionary if it wasn't for him Ethiopia would have been divided into many small week states as many of lower intelligence still today would have us be.
id too be worried if my vassal would have more power then me
It's called the somali region. ogaden is 1 of 50 tribes there in that region. Its a name the british encountered in the desert regions closer to somalia...its highly insulting

Ss?
Harar belongs to harari ppl and oromo and Somali
Harar was solely inhabited by the hawiye and hararis and oromos
wrong story
Minelik wasn't strangest nor a king he was european imperialism track shower. He would have been killed first day.
Let me guess ur Somali 😂😂
@@everythingsrelevent9547 Yep he is lol
@@everythingsrelevent9547so
He also massacred millions of oromos
His warriors was oromo in that campaign so oromo kills oromo
how can he kill oromia when he him self is from shewawa 🤦♂️. Most of minlik fighters were actually oromos. A lot of people associate minlik to gonder but minlik never ruled gonder he was a king from shewawa . We love him in gonder because he is a visionary. Gonder was actually under king yohannes of Tigray which was a boss of minlik.
@@chuasmare22 oromo slaves lol tbey were Second class citizens.
Don't make me laugh.
I read he was hiding in church during the war
😂 😂 minlik unified Ethiopia after Teddy, yohanne failed. Minlik is a visionary almost all the lands Ethiopia have today is because of him.
