Menelik II: The Battle of Chelenqo - 1887

  • Ethiopian histories often gloss over Menelik's southern conquests. That said, glossing over these campaigns is perhaps the biggest mistake one can make if they want to understand Ethiopian history - they were critical for the rise of Ethiopia's most famous Emperor. After years of preparation, this future Emperor is now preparing himself for one of his most important conquests - that of the city of Harar.

    Thank you for describing Harar, the vibrant, diverse city it has always been. Harar city was home to many Muslim ethnic groups. Well done on including all involved in this battle, one of the worse days for Muslims in the region.

    Overall the documentary is good. Here is what is missing
    1) Harari flag
    2) Menilik had 35 thousand Amhara solders, 70 thousand Oromo solders and 112 British soldiers in charge of Artillery and consultants
    3) Amir Abdulahi had 4 thousand Harari solders, 3 thousand Somali soldiers, and 2 thousand Oromo solders
    4) the Battle of Chelenqo lasted 11 houses and 45 minutes
    Source: Kabir Ahmed Abdujalil who in 1973 at age of 109 in the city of Jigjiga. He lost his father and brother in the battle of Chelenqo. He founded the city of Jigjiga after he, his brother and mother were expelled from city of Harar in February 1887.

      hey, thanks for the response. A few replies, though:
      - I didn't use any flags in this video; if I were to use the Harari flag, id also have to use the Shewan tricolor (which I did not)
      - I am basing my numbers on a scholarly source, and an account from an interview with someone who was actually present in the battle. I don't quite know why Menelik would mobilize an excess of 105,000 men for a campaign where that number wasn't needed. Menelik probably mobilized less than 10,000 to Embabo, Guté Dilli, and less than 30,000 to Azulé -- if I recall. The Harari estimates may well be incorrect, but if I can't actually read a source, I can't exactly use it as reference.
      - the length of the battle is disputed; I believe I left it out of the video, as it's impossible to prove one way or another and ultimately not directly relevant. The impression I have is that it was shorter rather than longer, though.

      @@Kalkidan727 When he invaded the Emirate of Harar during the Battle of Chalanqo. It is also estimated that hundreds of mosques were eradicated in Harar and that 11K people died in West Arsi in one day, one town. How do you say Menelik II is good when he did this?

    • @Kalkidan727
      @Kalkidan727 10 місяців тому +1

      As a human I don't accept the fact that mosques were eradicated or that any people were killed but Atse Minilik can't kill or give an order to kill someone intentionally, I can guarantee you. Battles could cause many death but why does the Emir forced him to change his religion? Didn't they know that those topics can cause problems? What is religion for you? Would you like to be forced to change yours? I do respect other religions but no one could force me to change mine, it's my identity. And to answer your question, maybe he have done faults too but he also sacrificed a lot for own people and for his beloved, modernised country:The Greater Ethiopia. He fought for her unity and liberty. That's why I like lim, he is just a good example of a great leader and heroes contrary to Abiy.

    • @PE-Decoded
      @PE-Decoded 10 місяців тому

      @@Kalkidan727 National Public Radio estimated that hundreds of mosques were destroyed in Harar. If Menelik II made a surprising attack to the Sultan and destroyed Harar's mosque, how would you expect the Sultan to be even near to Menelik II? Have you not heard of the Aanolle massacre either? It is widely in consensus that in Arsi area, Menelik II's army cut woman's breasts, men's hand and then massacred 11,000 people. Menelik nor the Arsi Oromo had military that size. So if Menelik's army cut woman's breasts, men's hands and people which are larger than there armies, would you not sense that it is targeted to civilians?
