It warms my heart that you took care of this macaw after he was found on the side of the road. I prefer them roaming free in the wild in Mexico and South America. But this one wouldn't even survive there anymore and is in good hands
Oh my gosh, your bird is so adorable!! His body language is excellent, he’s content and fluffing his feathers throughout the entire video. You clearly have a wonderful relationship with him and he trusts you a lot. His feathers are lustrous and his body is in great condition. I’ve been to a restaurant that rescues abused tropical birds and acts a sanctuary for them. They have a military macaw named Courtney. Not sure if Courtney is a boy or a girl, but I know they like to dance! Beautiful birds.

I noticed none of the girls I dated over the 15 years I had a lovebird cared for him... at all. Do you become undatable when you become a macaw owner? 😂 lol. Great video on Militaries! Excellent showcase of what its like having a relationship with a parrot! He really wants you to stop talking to that stupid camera and give him 110% of your attention which is probably good for people to see too! Having a single parrot is very different from having two or more!

Thank you so much for this , I will be getting back to you. I Have a Military Macaw his name is Paco, short for Apocalypse . You have already answered so many questions I have, and I would like to ask you more . I don't approve of caging birds but my wife had him when we got together, he was a rescue but sadly my wife passed away only 3 yrs after we met . For the past 5 yrs he's lived in the corner of my living room , that's not to say he has a bad life , I interact with him many times a day. He has perches inside and out . He talks , only to me , I play guitar to him most nights , he likes New york -New york , Da Da Dada Da . The problem is I need to re-home him as he will live decades more than me (I'm 66 ). I have tried Craigs list but , imagine you had a child and knew that you would not be around to raise him , how hard would that be to 'hand him off' and would anyone really be good enough ? Any advice would be appreciated, again thank you for that video is was much more informative than anything I have watched.
Have you looked at zoos? Many have lovely large areas outside where macaws can fly about. I love the San Diego zoo in particular-they have a big flock and a wonderful area for them.
I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you're looking for good resources! Re-homing parrots is a difficult task unfortunately - they are not inherently good pets because they are so high maintenance, and so it's difficult to find someone who is both knowledgeable/able enough who has room to take one. My recommendation would be to see if there are any bird/parrot-specific rescues around you. They are great resources and will often take birds from people in your type of situation. They talk to potential owners to make sure they know what they are getting into and occasionally have foster programs. If there is not a rescue near you, it may be worth a drive. I wish you both the best!
Any update? If you still have him I recommend Companion Parrots Rehomed out of N Carolina. I have a very soft spot in my heart for Military's. They live a LONG time. My Sasha passed away but she was in her 80s, a wild capture from Mexico after World War 1. I really hope yours can find a good home. If I weren't deployed overseas, I'd try to help.
Its name derives from the military personnel who brought them back to Europe. It also alludes to their olive green coloring that resembles "military green."
A high fat diet is important for military macaws even in captivity but seeds are not usually very good. They should have nuts in addition to pellets/vegetables. They live at high elevations and mountainous areas and prefer things cooler and drier than other macaws.
I feed seeds as a training treat, only. :) Nuts (other than peanuts) are much better, you're right, although a good pellet should have the fat requirement they need. I wasn't away they prefer drier habitat - thank you for the correction!

My macaw never uses his outside voice inside till he heard your bird..I'm in Ireland..my macaw free flys ..I uploaded a couple of videos on my UA-cam channel go sub me back ..I'll beupliasing more when spring hits because it's a bit cold to fly right now, we still go out but for a quick fly..its also a bit cold for showers we only do it 2c a week because it's a whole deal of getting a room extra warm ..he got a little cold once when wet it took me weeks to get him to shower again ..I got my bathroom done so he can walk in ..
Goes to show you just how much they AREN’T good for pets because I hear of people finding them abandoned in similar situations like the box you described earlier a lot! People are at their wits end with the incessant screaming, hormonal issues or other behavioral problems that come along with captive birds!
For sure! They can be super fun and rewarding, but it's hard to imagine the type of life you're signing up for when you get one. When people want to get one, I recommend fostering or volunteering somewhere with them first.
He was originally found in a box on the side of the road. A friend of mine had him for about a year, and then couldn't take care of him anymore. I've had him ever since!
Someone dumped him on the side of the road and after rescuers found him she took care of him. Illegal trade still happens in South and Mesoamerican countries till this day and along with habitat loss it reduced their populations. This one won't survive in the wild anymore, but I am glad that someone is taking care of him

Unfortunately, Vero was captive bred and would not survive in the wild. I do not support captive breeding of parrots, but he is in captivity now and so he must be taken care of as well as possible.

He is not - his wings are not clipped, but I'm guessing they were when he was young, because he has never learned how to fly.

It depends on the individual; some of the average weight range overlaps, but in general militaries are slightly larger.
I believe blue and golds are slightly larger but the sizes overlap.
