  • This episode is part 2 of a crazy desert adventure where I attempted to follow the train tracks of the Iron Ore train that runs 700 kilometers through the Sahara. About halfway, I crash, and my motorcycle doesn't start anymore. Time for plan B. Or C, or D. Any plan really.

    Please watch the full video before commenting on what went wrong 😂 To already answer some suggestions.. yes I tried rocking the bike to get the gear to change but in deep sand it did not move an inch 😢 I pulled in the clutch while trying to start the bike, as it was in gear and my bike will normally always start in gear when the clutch is pulled. Except for this time.. 🙃 If my bike would always only start in neutral, I would have moved heaven and earth to get it in neutral. But because my bike normally also starts in gear, this wasn’t the only thing I was thinking of 🙌 seeing it work out in the end makes everything perhaps look simple and obvious but for me, standing there in the sand next to a bike that didn’t start for the first time in 50.000 kilometers, things did not look very simple and obvious at all 😂

      Don’t worry Noraly …….. the main thing is you got it going again. I would have been totally scared if it happened to me in the middle of a desert. You did amazing to keep your cool after getting thrown off the bike. Pay no attention to the Monday morning quarter backs. I wonder what the temp is like during the day when you are riding…….. if it is over 30 it must be exhausting with the helmet overheating. I know I find it tough when it is that hot and you are exerting yourself.
      Stay safe and thank you for the wonderful videos as always. Love you girl

    TIP: you are most likely right about getting it out of the gear. Next time, sit on the bike, try to "push" it back and forth while pressing the gear lever to go neutral. Sometimes, if there is tension on the gearbox, it doesn't come out of the gear until you release the tension.

      I thought the same. But do this in the sand...

  • @Nicoya
    @Nicoya Рік тому +65

    Great job getting going again! If this happens again, some things to try/check:
    For the bike being stuck in gear, instead of trying to rock the bike in deep sand (impossible, as you know), just tip the bike onto the right-hand side so you can turn the rear wheel with one hand while working the gear lever with the other. The transmission isn't actually jammed in gear, but actually blocked at a false neutral and unable to shift into 2nd due to the drive dogs not being lined up. Putting light pressure on the gear lever while turning the rear wheel will allow you to drift the transmission through the false neutral until the dogs for 2nd line up, at which point you can complete the shift.
    For the no-start issue, it is almost certainly the microswitch in the clutch lever, either becoming disconnected or getting jammed up with debris. If you trust yourself not to start the bike while in gear, just bypass it. At the very least, you can familiarize yourself with how to bypass it so that you can perform the operation trailside when needed.
    All in all you handled this situation great!

Ms Noraly, bikes have two sensors... Clutch lever & sidestand & with the crash you most likely knocked one of them off centre.. and with the pushing and shoving from you or the helpers, it probably got pushed back into the right position again. FOR NEXT TIME: No use to push/rock the bike back and forth in sand this deep (as you already mentioned Noraly). Instead, lay it on its right side, spin the rear wheel with your hand and find that neutral.
    But what an adventure that was, eh? :)

    • @tpelle2
      @tpelle2 Рік тому +27

      That's what I was going to suggest. I've seen people "push start" motorcycles that way as well.
      It's a shame that the manufacturers, on a bike that is intended for adventure riding, no longer put kick starters on them. A kick starter may be a literal life saver.

    • @tyrantworm7392
      @tyrantworm7392 Рік тому +3

      @@tpelle2 Not many people actually use adventure bikes for adventure, removing saves weight and things like side-stand and "in gear" switches are there to protect the stupid and the inevitable litigation when stupid decides to turn left or not confirm neutral/disengage the clutch on start up. Not disagreeing for Noraly's use case though.

    • @snakerstran9101
      @snakerstran9101 Рік тому +5

      I'm not a fan of laying a bike over on purpose, seems like one problem leads to another.
      Often times just grabbing the rear wheel and tugging in both directions is enough.
      More leverage than pushing the whole bike.
      Or putting the side stand down and leaning the bike out of the hole while tugging the rear wheel.
      If the side stand sinks in, lay something under it, take your boot off if nothing else.
      I didn't notice if she tried pulling in the clutch to start.
      That, at least, used to be an option to start while in gear.

Both thirty years old Land rovers made it, not the Toyota ...... that series had a fault in the engine ... we actually launched it on a truck and it went back to Algers and ferry back to Marseille.
